REFERENCE Ref: Megan Longden – Hockey Scholar and Outstanding Hockey Player

Megan is one of the most dedicated and coachable Hockey players I have ever worked with, and this attitude and mindset has seen her game dramatically improve over the past couple of years. This cumulated in her U18 Futures Cup selection (despite being age trapped) and her winning the Player of the Season award at Bromsgrove School (despite her being in the L6th).

Megan’s passion for Hockey is infectious, as is her desire to improve. She has given up a huge amount of time to train individually over the years and this self-motivation is a quality not many girls of her age possess. Megan is always a pleasure to coach; always taking on board advice and not just taking it on but coming back with highly constructive questions to make sure she understands the ‘why’; another quality that makes her stand out. In the past months, she has been accepted onto and attended the ASSE programme, an elite programme supported by England Hockey. To attend this programme to the full she turned down the opportunity to tour South Africa with school; another example of Megan putting her Hockey development first.

On the pitch, she leads by example with her work rate. She is also incredibly versatile, having the ability to play anywhere in Defence or Midfield. Her exposure to many positions has seen her develop a wide-ranging skill set, with her low barrier tackling standing out. Megan’s ability to read the game puts her one step ahead of her competitors, leading to a high interception count during matches.

I have recently left my role as Director of Hockey at Bromsgrove School and begun as Head Coach at University of Bristol. The biggest compliment I could pay Megan is that if she was not looking to study in America I would have done my upmost to get her to University of Bristol. She is the kind of player and character you can build a programme around and wherever she ends up studying and playing will be very lucky to have her.
