Q&A with Robert

What makes you different to other athletes? I joined Team Bath Athletics Club at the age of eight and almost as far back as I can remember, have trained hard, week in week out. I believe that raw talent is essential in an elite athlete but so are commitment and perseverance. I have talent and I’m also committed, passionate and driven to be the best I can be. I am a team player and will go the extra mile for my team. Why do you want to compete in college? The American collegiate athletics environment is unique. I want to further my academic studies beyond high school, but I also want to fulfill my passion for sport. I love to compete, it’s in my DNA, and I believe I will flourish as a sports scholar in a US college. I know it will be tough, balancing academic studies whilst training and competing, but I am confident in my ability to manage this. I have spoken with a number of British athletes currently studying in the USA; I am entering into this process with my eyes open.

What are your college goals? My aim is to obtain a good quality education and secure a degree, majoring in a business or sports management related field. I also aspire to represent my college at Conference, Regional and National level. I want to broaden my horizons by studying abroad and immerse myself fully into college life.

What are your life goals? I aim to compete and win medals at the very highest level of my chosen sport. It would be the achievement of a life goal to represent my college and country. Sport will always have a big part in my life; it is my passion. I also want a successful and rewarding career based on a sound education.

What are your outside interests? I play piano and, through perseverance and regular practice, have worked through my grading exams (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) achieving grade 8 Merit. I’ve taken time out recently to focus on my academic studies but still play piano for fun. I am a qualified Rugby Union referee and officiate schools and club matches, scheduling fixtures around my athletics commitments. I am a keen supporter of Liverpool Football Club (soccer).
