Toby is a footballer whom I trust in any situation, such is the respect that I have for him and he has for others. I am the current Head of Football and 1st XI coach at Harrow School and since Toby first played for me in 2014, he has grown from a talented boy with bags of potential into a young man who is a fierce competitor and is now physically, mentally and skilfully equal to any of his peers. The respect he has earned from his coaches and teammates is clear to see; his coaches have picked him for captaincy the last three years and his peers look up to him as a leader on the pitch, as someone who will step up and drive the team on in tough situations. When analysing Toby as a footballer, it is evident that he is an all-round player, a rarity in the game these days. He has been dedicated to his strength and conditioning programme over the past four years, this has made him strong in the tackle and hard to push off the ball. This physicality and agility has helped him to develop one of his favourite aspects of the game: a high, fast press. Toby is so good at this that he rarely concedes fouls when winning the ball back off unsuspecting opponents. He has also been one of Harrow School’s leading cross-country runners since joining, giving him excellent stamina and the ability to keep up a high-press for the full duration of a match. Toby’s real quality lies on the ball. As Toby has mentioned, he enjoys playing in attacking roles, either wide or centrally. I have employed him in a central midfield role for the majority of matches, as I know that if Toby plays well, the whole team will play well. It is crucial for us to get the ball into Toby as quickly as possible so that he can dictate play, take on opposition players and make incisive passes from a key position on the pitch. Toby is rarely wasteful when on the ball; he takes one or two touches before releasing a player in space. When put under pressure, Toby has the acceleration and agility that creates space and time for himself before releasing the ball. As well as providing a large number of assists, Toby also chips in with his fair share of goals. To show his strength off both feet, I recall two goals that Toby recently scored with his left foot, both from 25 yards out. For both, he showed great composure to bring the ball down and give himself time to get the shot away while under pressure. The first was fired into the top right-hand corner, the second was expertly guided into the bottom left-hand corner. Toby is also incredibly strong in the air. He has a great leap on him and he enjoys the aerial combat against other physical players. Finally, I would be remiss not to speak about Toby the person, the character. I taught him for three years and, by the time he finishes Harrow, I will have coached him for 4 years. He is a wonderfully conscientious young man who is cheerfully spirited, has a cheeky sense of humour and has the respect and admiration of peers, coaches and teachers alike. On the pitch he never gets wound up by opponents, never loses focus from his game and never complains to referees. Off the pitch, he is a great role model for the younger boys at the school and he is always determined to improve as a person and as a footballer. He loves to train hard and puts his full effort into every practice. In my five years at Harrow Toby is, without doubt, one of the most talented footballers I have had the pleasure to coach and any university would be lucky to have him with the unique character, skills and abilities that Toby has.
04/01/2018 Leer of Reference for Toby Gould My name is Ryan Moore and I have worked as a coach for Fulham Football Club for the past 5 years. Prior to my role at Fulham FC I played soccer professionally in the USA for the Colorado Rapids before taking on a coaching position at the club. During my time coaching at Fulham FC I have worked with numerous players who now represent their country and are playing in the champions league. These players include but are not limited to Moussa Dembele (Celtic FC & France international); Cauley Woodrow (Fulham FC & England International); Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham FC & England International) & Patrick Roberts (Man City FC & England International). I am writing this report for Toby Gould, who, as far as I understand, is planning to apply to your institution to continue his academic studies as well as his football training. Toby is a former academy player at Fulham FC and had been with the club for over 3 years. I invited Toby down to trial with Fulham FC 4 years ago and he impressed our scouts and coaches enough to offer him a place with our U14 squad. Toby is one player that both my colleagues and I have very high hopes for in the game. His technical ability has improved massively over the past few years and his physical attributes such as speed and strength on the ball are at an elite level. At Fulham FC we target players who have the ability to listen, learn and retain information and Toby has demonstrated this throughout his time with us. As well as his involvement with Fulham FC, Toby represented ISFA (representative team for UK independent schools), this is a fantastic achievement and goes to show his footballing pedigree. Toby will be a great addition to your programme and I therefore wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend him to your institution For any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me on the details below Rmoore@fulhamfc.com 07885735295
Kindest Regards,
Ryan Moore
