WHAT’S AT STAKE ON WEDNESDAY The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to the U.S. Open Cup round of 16 and host the Portland Timbers (MLS) or Orlando City U-23s (PDL) next Tuesday, June 24. Portland hosts Orlando City U-23s Tuesday night. Since starting play in 2010, Minnesota United has reached the round of 16 once. The club knocked off Real Salt Lake in the 2012 round of 32, its first ever win against an MLS side, before losing to the San Jose Earthquakes. Minnesota United are one of six NASL teams remaining in the tournament, and are in contention for $15,000 in prize money awarded to the Division II team that advances the furthest. Through June 16, three NASL teams have knocked off visiting MLS sides in the 2014 fourth round. The Atlanta Silverbacks scored a 92nd-minute winner to knock off Real Salt Lake 2-1, the New York Cosmos cruised past crosstown foe New York Red Bulls 3-0, and the Carolina RailHawks won a penalty kick shootout after playing Chivas USA to a 1-1 stalemate. The NASL is 3-0 against MLS competition in the 2014 U.S. Open Cup through June 16. The San Antonio Scorpions visit FC Dallas and Indy Eleven visit the Columbus Crew Tuesday night.
101st edition of the u.s. open cup The 2014 U.S. Open Cup, the 101st edition of the domestic tournament, began on May 7 and features 80 teams, the largest field in the modern era. All U.S. based Division I, II and III teams participate in the tournament proper (16 from MLS, eight from the NASL and 14 from USL PRO), along with 42 amateur teams. The U.S. Open Cup, the oldest annual team tournament in American sports history, has its origins in 1914 and is named after Sporting KC’s original founder Lamar Hunt. The single-elimination tournament will continue through the championship match on Sept. 30 or Oct. 1 with the winner receiving $250,000 in prize money and a berth in the 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League. Sporting KC are two-time champions in the competition, winning the title in 2004 and 2012.
Fifth-year Minnesota United manager Manny Lagos enjoyed a 16-year professional playing career from 1990-2005. The midfielder joined MLS for the League’s inaugural season in 1996, when he was teammates with Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes at the New York-New Jersey MetroStars. He then moved to the Chicago Fire (1998-1999) and Tampa Bay Mutiny (1999-2000) before his career took off with the San Jose Earthquakes. Lagos made 89 appearances for the Earthquakes from 2001-2003, contributing 18 goals and 20 assists (including postseason). He helped San Jose win MLS Cups in the bookend years and earned three competitive appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team during this period. Lagos finished his playing career at the Columbus Crew from 2004-2005.
Christian Ramirez shines during 2014 spring season Forward Christian Ramirez spearheaded Minnesota United’s first-place finish in the 2014 NASL spring season. The 23-year-old forward led the league in goals (5) and assists (4) as was named NASL Player of the Month for May and June. Ramirez was involved in nine of the team’s 16 league goals during the spring campaign and struck the game-winner in Minnesota’s 1-0 U.S. Open Cup third round victory over the Des Moines Menace.
Forwards Daniel Mendes, Simone Bracalello (two goals, one assist each) and midfielder Miguel Ibarra (three goals, two assists) were also productive in attack during Minnesota’s run to the spring title. Defenders Justin Davis and Tiago Calvano anchored a defense that allowed nine goals, second-fewest in the league. Davis and midfielder Aaron Pitchkolan were the only two Minnesota players to play the full 90 minutes in all nine NASL matches.
