KICKERS TO WATCH

RACE FOR THE CUP

BULOW, David (#10): This fan favorite returned to Richmond

In the lone upset of the Third Round, the Kickers ejected Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew, 2-1, from Open Cup action at Columbus Crew Stadium on June 28. Midfielder Nozomi Hiroyama gave the visitors an early lead when he connected on a Stanley Nyazamba pass in the 20th minute. Crew midfielder Cole Grossman brought the score level in the 37th minute before the Kickers prolific goal scorer Matthew Delicâte nodded home the game-winning goal five minutes from regulation.

ROAD TO THE QUARTERFINALS

The Kickers advanced to the Third Round after a pair of convincing 4-1 victories at Richmond City Stadium over USL PRO rivals Dayton Dutch Lions and Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the first two rounds. Kickers midfielder David Bulow notched five of the Kickers eight goals, bringing his scoring tally in U.S. Open Cup play to 13 overall, tying him with Jaime Moreno and Johnny Menyongar for first place all-time in the scoring chart for the modern era.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

The Kickers advanced to the Quarterfinals for the fifth time in franchise history, but the Third Round victory marks the first time the Kickers have defeated a MLS team on their own home turf. The Kickers ousted three MLS sides previously en route to the Quarterfinals, including Colorado Rapids (2000), D.C. United (2004) and LA Galaxy (2007) at Richmond City Stadium.

REGULAR SEASON ACTION

The Kickers are coming off a tough back-to-back series against American Division rivals Charlotte Eagles last weekend. First, a rain-soaked marathon match up in Richmond Friday night saw the Kickers fall 2-1. They avenged the loss Saturday when the Kickers returned the 2-1 scoreline to the Eagles in Charlotte. Goals by Luke Vercollone and Edson Elcock bolstered the Kickers second-place position in the American Division standings. The 2011 season marks the 13th time the Richmond Kickers have qualified for the U.S. Open Cup over the past 19 seasons and hold an overall record of 22-11 during tournament play. The Kickers claimed the U.S. Open Cup title the first year of the “Professional Era” in 1995 and have since made it to the Quarterfinal round five times. With 74 total goals scored during the Open Cup, the Kickers set several franchise records, as well as a Professional Era U.S. Open Cup record, for most goals (12) during the 8-4 rout over the Ocean City Barons in 2005. Established in 1993, the Richmond Kickers have consistently been one of the most successful professional soccer clubs in America. Media Contact:

NYAZAMBA, Stanley (#27): The 2008 USL-2 Rookie of the Year signed with the Columbus Crew in 2009 and returned to Richmond after a two-year stint with MLS and NASL. The native of Zimbabwe recorded the first goal in USL PRO history when he converted a penalty kick against Orlando City in April. He has since gone on to register two goals and three assists overall this season. HIROYAMA, Nozomi (#9): This Japanese international’s expe-

rience extends to four continents, also earning a pair of caps with the full Japanese National Team. The veteran midfielder has earned seven starts in 14 appearances with the Kickers this season, and recently notched his first goal in a Kickers uniform in the 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew.

BANGURA, SHAKA (#12): The native of Sierra Leone made a late start with the Kickers, battling early season injuries. Coming off the bench, he has earned eight points in 12 appearances, most recently adding his second assist in the Kickers 2-1 win in Charlotte Saturday.

YOMBY, William (#2): This stalwart defender shores up the

Kickers backline, leading the defense to five shutouts to open the season. While allowing just 17 goals, the big Cameroonian has also contributed to the attack, registering his first goal of the season against Charlotte last Friday.

JONES, Ryan (#1): This 18-year old goalkeeper marks the

after a one season hiatus with Real Maryland. Over four seasons in Richmond, Bulow led the Kickers offense to three Championship appearances. Notching five goals in U.S. Open Cup play this season, Bulow was named TheCup.us Player of the Round, and is now tied for first place all-time in the U.S. Open Cup scoring chart, alongside Jaime Moreno and Johnny Menyongar.

youngest player ever to sign with the Kickers pro team. At 6’6”, the Liverpool youngster brings a high quality of professional experience to Richmond, having played with Leeds United’s first team.

KALUNGI, Henry (#25): This defender solidifies the Kickers

defensive unit for his third pro season. He recently returned from his first call-up with the Uganda National Team for an African Cup of Nations 2012 qualifier match against Guinea Bissau in June. In his third season with the Kickers, he has played every minute of every game during the regular season and U.S. Open Cup. 804.938.1887 (c)
