2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals | July 21, 2015 vs. Houston Dynamo | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes #SKCvHOU: MATCH PREVIEW
HOT AT HOME
Two MLS rivals meet Tuesday in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals as Sporting Kansas City hosts the Houston Dynamo at Sporting Park. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Aug. 11 or 12 and host Real Salt Lake, who defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0 in last Tuesday’s quarterfinal clash at Rio Tinto Stadium. Peter Vermes’ side enters the match with an eight-game home winning streak in all competitions, equaling the club record first set in 2004. Sporting KC (9-3-6, 33 points) is currently tied for third in the Western Conference standings but leads MLS with 1.83 points per game and has just three defeats this season, two fewer than any other club. Led by first-year manager Owen Coyle, the Houston Dynamo (6-8-6, 24 points) joined Sporting KC in moving to the Western Conference this offseason. Houston sits ninth in the standings, eight points out of playoff position. Will Bruin leads the team with eight MLS goals while veteran Brad Davis has contributed four assists, all of which from set pieces. Tuesday marks the first ever meeting between Sporting KC and Houston in the U.S. Open Cup proper. The clubs faced off in the 2011 MLS qualification semifinals as Sporting KC claimed a 1-0 extra-time victory in College Station, Texas. Sporting KC progressed to the quarterfinals with an emphatic 6-2 victory over FC Dallas on July 1 in front of a sold-out crowd at Sporting Park. Dom Dwyer netted a club-record four goals while Krisztian Nemeth added a brace as Sporting KC equaled its highest all-time goal total in a single match. One night earlier, Houston advanced with a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids at BBVA Compass Stadium. The game was delayed for nearly three hours before 19-year-old Mauro Manotas scored on a 43rd-minute header.
A 2-1 league victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday extended Sporting KC’s home winning streak to eight games in all competitions, tying the club record first set in 2004. Sporting KC boasts five shutouts during the current eight-game run, which began with a 1-0 result over the Chicago Fire on May 3. A win on Tuesday would see Sporting KC top the eight-game home surge made in 2004 when Bob Gansler’s side won the U.S. Open Cup in September and advanced to MLS Cup in November. VERMES CLIMBING THE RANKS Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes is two wins shy of tying Bob Gansler as the winning coach in club history across all competitions. Gansler won 108 games from 1999-2006, including 86 in the regular season and nine in the U.S. Open Cup. Vermes currently sits at 106 wins with 85 in the regular season and a club-record 11 victories in the Open Cup. Vermes is one regular season win shy of tying Gansler for eighth-most all time in MLS history. Vermes’ 85 regular season wins are fifth among active coaches, behind Sigi Schmid (217), Bruce Arena (185), Dominic Kinnear (146) and Frank Yallop (128). Vermes earned his 100th career coaching win in all competitions on May 29 as Sporting KC beat FC Dallas 4-0. He has a 105-71-56 record since taking over in August 2009 and is the only person to win MLS Cup as both a player (2000) and coach (2013) with the same team.
A RIVALRY RESUMES Sporting KC has faced Houston 16 times since the beginning of 2011, more than any other MLS opponent. This includes five postseason games when the clubs squared off in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs. Sporting KC holds the narrow edge with a 5-4-7 overall record and just one loss in the last eight meetings. Houston held the upper hand in 2011 and 2012, eliminating Sporting KC in the conference championship and semifinals, respectively. Vermes’ men exacted revenge in 2013, topping the Dynamo in the Eastern Conference finals, 2-1 on aggregate, before winning MLS Cup. The clubs will square off twice more during the regular season. Houston makes another trip to Sporting Park on Aug. 1 before Sporting KC travels to BBVA Compass Stadium on Sept. 23. A few other #SKCvHOU notables ahead of Tuesday’s match:
LAST TIME THEY MET: INSTANT CLASSIC Sporting KC battled back from a 3-1 deficit with three goals in the final 20 minutes for a thrilling 4-4 draw at the Houston Dynamo on April 25. The eight-goal game equaled the second-highest scoring MLS match in club history, a feat not seen since 1998, and was capped off by Benny Feilhaber’s superb equalizer in the fifth minute of second half stoppage time. Krisztian Nemeth opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, finding the net for the third time this month, before Dom Dwyer kick-started the comeback with his second goal of the year in the 74th minute. Feilhaber then recorded the first brace of his MLS career and did so in dramatic fashion with a penalty kick in the 80th minute before a stunning half-volley from 25 yards out with less than two minutes remaining. Rookie midfielder Connor Hallisey made his MLS debut in second half stoppage time.
• Dom Dwyer has scored in each of his last four matches against Houston. He scored the game-winner in the 2013 Eastern Conference Championship second leg and netted goals in all three previous regular season meetings. • Seventeen of Sporting KC’s 26 regular season goals all-time against Houston have come after the 60th minute. • The home team in the series is winless in the last seven regular season meetings (0-3-4 record).

Sporting KC 4-4 Houston Dynamo MLS Regular Season | BBVA Compass Stadium | Houston, TX Attendance: 21,046 | Weather: 79 degrees and partly cloudy
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is open to all amateur/professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest continuously running open soccer tournament. Similar to other domestic cups worldwide, the U.S. Open Cup is a knockout-style tournament with home field determined by a coin toss. Sporting KC has twice lifted the Dewar Challenge Trophy as champions of the competition in 2004 and 2012, while Houston has yet to lift the title. Now in its 102nd edition, the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was headlined by the largest field in the modern era (1995-present) with 89 teams in contention when the first round began in May. The 2015 champion will win $250,000 in prize money, while the runner-up receives $60,000. The furthest-advancing team from each lower division league receives $15,000, including the NASL’s New York Cosmos and the USL’s Charlotte Independence who were eliminated in the Round of 16. The tournament winner qualifies for the group stage of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League.

2015 OPEN CUP FORMAT Amateur teams comprised 42 of the 89 entries and entered the competition in the play-in and first rounds. The remaining 47 participants encompassed Division I, Division II and Division III professional clubs, who entered in the second (USL PRO), third (NASL) and fourth (MLS) rounds, respectively. A new, geographically-based random draw has resulted in a fixed bracket from the Round of 16 onward. The 16 Fourth Round winners were divided geographically (regardless of league affiliation) into groups of four, and a random draw determined the pairings within each group. See page 5 for the 2015 schedule, bracket and results.

2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals | July 21, 2015 vs. Houston Dynamo | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes FEILHABER ON PACE FOR RECORD-SETTING SEASON
SPORTING IS SCORING
Just past the halfway point of the MLS season, Benny Feilhaber has set careerhighs with six goals and 10 assists. The 30-year-old World Cup veteran won Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month for April and received MLS All-Star honors for the first time in his career when he was named to the All-Star Fan XI on July 13. Following a one-goal, one-assit outing in Sporting KC’s 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact on Saturday, Feilhaber moved to 14 assists in all competitions this year. With almost half the season still to play, he is on pace to shatter Preki’s single-season assist record in all competitions for the club (18 in 2003).
Sporting KC is tied for second in MLS with 1.56 goals per game, thanks in large part to a trio of four-goal performances during a seven-game unbeaten run that spanned from April to June. Prior to this year, the team had scored four goals on three instances in a six-game span only once (1996). By comparison, SKC struck four goals three times in all of 2014 and three times from 2011-2013 combined. The club also ranks second in MLS with 33 assists. Sporting KC carried their goal scoring form into the U.S. Open Cup on July 1, matching the single-game club record with six goals in a 6-2 win over FC Dallas. It marked the first time since August 2005—a 6-1 Open Cup triumph over the Des Moines Menace—that Sporting KC had hit six goals in a game.

TOUGH TO BEAT Sporting KC has been hard to beat during the first four months of the 2015 campaign. Their three MLS losses are two fewer than any other team and the second-fewest through 18 games in team history. The 2000 Kansas City Wizards, led by then-centerback Peter Vermes, started 11-2-5 en route to winning the club’s first Supporters’ Shield title and MLS Cup.
MELIA STEPPING UP Longtime backup goalkeeper Tim Melia earned his first start for Sporting KC on May 3, notching his first career league win and shutout. The sixth-year veteran hasn’t looked back since. Boasting a 9-1-2 record in all competitions, Melia leads MLS in goals against average (0.60) and ranks third in save percentage (0.77). His strong start in goal is arguably one of the most impressive in league history, as he became the first MLS goalkeeper all-time to post six shutouts in his first nine starts for a new club following Sporting KC’s 1-0 win at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on July 12. The sixth-year veteran was signed in the offseason after previously representing Real Salt Lake (2010-2011) and Chivas USA (2012-2014), where he backed up MLS All-Stars Nick Rimando (RSL) and Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA).
SPORTING PARK SELLING OUT OPEN CUP In Sporting KC’s 1-0 victory over Saint Louis FC on June 16, sold-out Sporting Park set a U.S. Open Cup fourth round attendance record with 19,298 fans on hand to see the cross-state matchup. The venue again drew the largest crowd of the fifth round as a sold-out crowd of 19,113 saw Sporting KC defeat FC Dallas 6-2. Sporting Park has sold out 63 straight MLS matches (including playoffs) dating back to March 2012 and 75 of 84 overall since opening in June 2011. SKC has set new regular season attendance records in each of the last four years, eclipsing 20,000 spectators per game in 2014. In 84 MLS matches played at the venue, Sporting Park is averaging 19,400 spectators—105 percent of its 18,467-seat capacity.
SKC TRADES CARRASCO FOR OKUGO Sporting KC acquired 24-year-old Amobi Okugo from Orlando City SC on Monday in exchange for midfielder Servando Carrasco. Okugo has been added to Sporting KC’s roster and will be eligible for selection ahead of Friday’s road match at Real Salt Lake. Okugo has logged 132 MLS appearances as a central defender and holding midfielder in six professional seasons since being selected sixth overall by the Philadelphia Union in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft as a Generation adidas signing out of UCLA. He started all 20 games in his only collegiate season for the Bruins, earning Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors and being named the Most Valuable Player at the 2010 MLS Player Combine. Okugo represented the United States extensively at the youth national team levels and attended the U.S. Soccer Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida for three semesters with the U.S. U-17’s from 2006-2007. He went on to appear at the 2009 and 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championships before playing for the U.S. U-23’s at the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament. In 2011, Okugo was a member of Major League Soccer’s Generation adidas roster that was led by Vermes during a tour of the Netherlands. Between 20122014, Okugo led all MLS players with 70 blocks and was fourth in the league with 276 interceptions. He was included on MLSsoccer.com’s “24 under 24” rankings of the league’s top youth talent each of the past two seasons (8th in 2013, 13th in 2014) and joined Orlando City SC for their inaugural MLS campaign in 2015 after leading the Union through their first five MLS seasons. Okugo appeared in 17 of Orlando City SC’s 22 matches across all competitions this year, including two U.S. Open Cup appearances, for the Lions.
BESLER PLAYS 200TH MATCH FOR SPORTING KC In Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact, Sporting KC captain Matt Besler made his 200th appearance for the club in all competitions. The defender, drafted in the first round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, currently ranks among Kansas City’s top 10 players all-time in the following categories: • Games played (reg. season/all competitions): 167 / 200 (8th) • Games started (reg. season/all competitions): 162 / 193 (7th) • Minutes played (reg. season/all competitions): 14,626 / 17,465 (7th)
PALMER-BROWN NAMED TO HOMEGROWN GAME Sporting KC defender Erik Palmer-Brown was named to the MLS Homegrown Team on Monday to face the Club America U-20’s during the 2015 Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game. Palmer-Brown started and played the full 90 minutes in last year’s inaugural event in a scoreless draw against the Portland Timbers U-23’s. Palmer-Brown, 18, has appeared in eight matches for Sporting KC across all competitions—including the team’s 2015 season opener and a 1-1 draw at D.C. United in May—since signing as a Homegrown Player in August 2013. He made his MLS debut in 2014 at age 17 and remains the youngest player to appear in an MLS match in club history. Last month, Palmer-Brown represented the United States at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand. He is one of three Sporting KC Academy products on Sporting KC’s roster along with goalkeeper Jon Kempin and defender Kevin Ellis. Led by head coach Landon Donovan, the MLS Homegrown Team will play the Club America U-20’s at 8 p.m. CT on July 28 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado on the eve of the 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star Game. 4
