2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals | Aug. 12, 2015 vs. Real Salt Lake | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes #SKCvRSL: MATCH PREVIEW
HOT AT HOME
Two MLS rivals meet Wednesday in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals as Sporting KC hosts Real Salt Lake at Sporting Park. The winner will advance to the final on Sept. 30 and face either the Chicago Fire or the Philadelphia Union, who square off in Wednesday’s other semifinal in Chester, Pennsylvania.
A 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo on Aug. 1 extended Sporting KC’s home unbeaten run to 14 games in all competitions dating back to March 8, tying the previous club record which spanned two seasons from 2004-2005. In addition, Sporting KC’s 11-game home unbeaten streak in MLS (7-0-4) breaks the club record set in 2008. The team’s 3-1 win over the Houston Dynamo on July 21 in the U.S. Open Cup was its ninth consecutive home victory since the beginning of May, setting a new club record. The result saw Sporting KC top the eight-game winning run made in 2004 when Bob Gansler’s side won the U.S. Open Cup in September and advanced to MLS Cup in November.
Sporting KC Peter Vermes’ side enters the match with a 14-game home unbeaten streak in all competitions, equaling the club record set from 2004 to 2005. Sporting KC (10-4-7, 37 points) is currently fourth in the Western Conference standings but leads MLS with 1.76 points per game and has just four defeats this season, two fewer than any other club. Sporting KC is fresh off a 3-1 victory at Toronto FC on Saturday, a result that tied Vermes as the winningest coach in club history. Jacob Peterson sealed the win with an 87th-minute strike against his former club after Benny Feilhaber and Krisztian Nemeth netted first-half goals on either side of Michael Bradley’s equalizer.
VERMES MAKES HISTORY Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes moved into a tie with Bob Gansler as the all-time winningest coach in club history with a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday at BMO Field. Vermes earned his 86th regular season win and 108th win in all competitions, equaling the club marks held by his former coach. Gansler served as manager of the U.S. MNT at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and later led KC to all three major domestic titles with Supporters Shield (2000), MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) championships. Vermes has a 108-72-57 record since taking over in August 2009 and is the only person to win MLS Cup as both a player (2000) and coach (2013) with the same team. He boasts a 12-4-1 mark in the U.S. Open Cup and coached the team to its second Open Cup title in 2012.
Real Salt Lake Real Salt Lake enters mid-August juggling three competitions and at the tail end of a four-game road swing that has taken the club to the U.S. capital, Guatemala and Canada. RSL took part in the highest-scoring MLS match this season — a remarkable 6-4 defeat at D.C. United on Aug. 1 — before launching its 2015-16 CONCACAF Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win at Guatemalan side Municipal last Wednesday. RSL then traveled north to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, suffering a 4-0 setback at BC Place. With Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal looming, Manager Jeff Cassar rested four regular starters in the match as Nick Rimando, Kyle Beckerman, Javier Morales and Tony Beltran watched their team fall to eighth place in the West (7-9-8, 29 points).
TO THE SEMIS AND BEYOND Sporting KC has reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup for the fourth time in team history. The club has two wins (2004, 2012) and one defeat (2002) at this stage of the competition and has emerged victorious in both Open Cup final appearances, winning the trophy at Arrowhead Stadium in 2004 and a sold-out Sporting Park in 2012. Real Salt Lake has progressed to the Open Cup semifinals for second time in three years. In 2013, RSL topped the Portland Timbers 2-1 to make their first ever championship appearance in the competition. Despite hosting a D.C. United side that finished 3-24-7 in the 2013 regular season, the Claret-and-Cobalt dropped the final 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Head-to-Head Intra-conference foes for the first time in 2015, Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake have taken their rivalry to a new level this season. The 2013 MLS Cup finalists have squared off three times this campaign with 17 yellow cards produced over 270 minutes of action. RSL has held the upper hand, gaining seven of a possible nine points in the regular season fixture. Real Salt Lake is winless in five games at Sporting Park (0-2-3) and has just one victory in their 11 all-time trips (1-5-5) to Kansas City (Aug. 29, 2009). The last knockout-style match played between the sides was MLS Cup 2013 at Sporting Park. Amid the coldest playing conditions in MLS history (recorded high of 20 degrees), Sporting KC and RSL battled to a 1-1 draw before the hosts won 7-6 in a 10-round PK shootout. Wednesday marks the first ever meeting between Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake in the U.S. Open Cup proper. The clubs met in the 2007 MLS qualification semifinals as RSL claimed a 2-1 extra-time victory at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando is the only player from either team’s current roster to have played in that match.
HOW THEY GOT HERE Sporting KC Sporting KC kicked off its 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over St. Louis FC on June 16 at Sporting Park. Graham Zusi scored the game’s only goal, heading home a cross from Benny Feilhaber in the 70th minute, while Tim Melia earned the shutout. In front of 19,298 fans — the largest fourth round crowd in the tournament’s modern era and a new club record for the competition — Sporting KC eliminated their cross-state rivals in the team’s first competitive match against an opponent from St. Louis. In the Round of 16, Dom Dwyer became the first player in team history to score four goals in a competitive match as Sporting KC earned an emphatic 6-2 victory over FC Dallas on July 1. Krisztian Nemeth added two goals while Feilhaber earned three assists during the record-setting night at Sporting Park. The six-goal outburst equaled the highest scoring match for the club all-time. Peter Vermes’ men secured a berth in the semifinals with a 3-1 comeback win over the Houston Dynamo on July 21 Sporting Park. Will Bruin opened the scoring for a Dynamo side playing with 10 men after Luis Garrido’s first half red card, but Sporting KC rallied for three goals in the final 20 minutes on strikes from Feilhaber, Dwyer and Nemeth. It was the team’s 300th victory in all competitions and ninth straight at home, setting a new club record.
ABOUT THE LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has been held annually since 1914 and is open to all amateur/professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the U.S. and the world’s third-longest continuously running open soccer tournament. Similar to other domestic cups worldwide, the U.S. Open Cup is a knockout-style tournament with home field determined by a coin toss. Sporting KC has twice lifted the Dewar Challenge Trophy as champions of the competition in 2004 and 2012, while Real Salt Lake has yet to win the title but advanced to the championship game in 2013. Now in its 102nd edition, the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was headlined by the largest field in the modern era (1995-present) with 89 teams in contention when the first round began in May. The 2015 champion will win $250,000 in prize money, while the runner-up receives $60,000. The furthest-advancing team from each lower division league receives $15,000, including the NASL’s New York Cosmos and the USL’s Charlotte Independence who were eliminated in the Round of 16. The tournament winner qualifies for the group stage of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League.
Real Salt Lake Real Salt Lake came from behind to defeat Seattle Sounders FC 2 by a 2-1 scoreline in the Open Cup fourth round on June 16 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Winger Joao Plata had a goal and an assist while midfielder Javier Morales added the game-winning strike in the 71st minute to avoid the upset against a USL team that led 1-0 at halftime. A Round of 16 matchup with the Portland Timbers on July 1 saw the Claretand-Cobalt emerge 2-0 victors with second-half goals from Morales and forward Sebastian Jaime. Jeff Attinella made two saves to earn the shutout at Rio Tinto Stadium. On July 14, Real Salt Lake advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 home win over the LA Galaxy. Defender Aaron Maund scored his first professional goal in the 87th minute while Attinella made four saves en route to the clean sheet, his second of the tournament. Midfielder Steven Gerrard made his competitive debut for LA as a halftime substitute after playing the previous 17 years with storied English club Liverpool FC.
2015 OPEN CUP FORMAT Amateur teams comprised 42 of the 89 entries and entered the competition in the play-in and first rounds. The remaining 47 participants encompassed Division I, Division II and Division III professional clubs, who entered in the second (USL PRO), third (NASL) and fourth (MLS) rounds, respectively. A new, geographically-based random draw resulted in a fixed bracket from the Round of 16 onward. The 16 Fourth Round winners were divided geographically (regardless of league affiliation) into groups of four, and a random draw determined the pairings within each group. See page 6 for the 2015 bracket and results. 3
2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals | Aug. 12, 2015 vs. Real Salt Lake | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes TOUGH TO BEAT
EYING ATTENDANCE RECORDS
Sporting KC has been hard to beat during the first four months of the 2015 campaign. Their four losses are the fewest of any MLS team and the fewest through 21 games in team history. Sporting KC has had five losses through 20 games in each of the previous two seasons (10-5-6 in 2013 and 11-5-5 in 2014). The 2000 Kansas City Wizards, led by then-centerback Peter Vermes, also started 11-5-5 en route to winning the club’s first Supporters’ Shield title and MLS Cup.
Sporting Park has attracted the largest crowds in each of the three previous rounds of this year’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a total of 56,000 fans attending. In a 1-0 win over St. Louis FC on June 16, Sporting Park drew 19,298 spectators to set a fourth round record in the tournament’s modern era. The largest crowd for a semifinal match in the U.S. Open Cup’s modern era (1995-present) is 14,742 set by Real Salt Lake in 2013.
FEILHABER ON FIRE
DWYER AHEAD OF THE REST
Just 21 games into the 2015 season, Benny Feilhaber has set MLS career-highs with eight goals and 12 assists. The 30-year-old World Cup veteran won MLS Player of the Month for April and received MLS All-Star honors for the first time in his career when he was named to the All-Star Fan XI and competed in the 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on July 29. Following his one-goal, one-assist performance Saturday in Toronto, Feilhaber moved to nine goals and 16 assists in all competitions this year. With almost three months still to play, he is well on pace to break Preki’s single-season assist record in all competitions for the club (18 in 2003). He also becomes just the second player in club history — alongside Preki — to record nine goals and 16 assists in a single season (all competitions). Preki accomplished the feat in 1997 and 2003.
Dom Dwyer currently leads all players as the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup’s top scorer with five goals, all of which have come in the previous two rounds of the tournament. His five strikes are tied for the most by a Kansas City player in U.S. Open Cup history.
SKC INKS JORDI QUINTILLA Sporting KC announced the signing of 21-year-old midfielder Jordi Quintilla on Thursday. He becomes the youngest Spaniard currently in Major League Soccer and occupies an international roster spot for Sporting KC. Quintilla developed as a youth at UE Lleida before moving to FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where he trained alongside former Sporting KC midfielder Oriol Rosell. In 2012, he began his professional career as an 18-year-old with Barcelona B in Spain’s second division and later went on loan to CF Badalona and CE L’Hospitalet. Most recently, Quintilla spent the 2014/15 season with AC Ajaccio in the French Ligue 2 and played in 20 games across all competitions for the club.

ESPINOZA INJURY BLOW
U.S. Soccer conducted the official draw last Wednesday to determine the below hosting priorities for the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final among the four teams remaining in the competition: Chicago Fire - Hosts with win over Philadelphia on Aug. 12 Real Salt Lake - Hosts with win over SKC AND Philadelphia win on Aug. 12 Philadelphia Union - Hosts with win over Chicago AND SKC win on Aug. 12 Sporting KC - Will not host 2015 U.S. Open Cup Final The 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final will be played on Wednesday, Sept. 30 with a $250,000 grand prize and a 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League berth at stake.
Midfielder Roger Espinoza suffered a sesamoid fracture in his left foot during the team’s 1-1 draw against Houston on Aug. 1 and is expected to miss at least 10 weeks while recovering from the injury, Sporting KC announced Thursday. Espinoza has started 20 matches for Sporting KC in all competitions this season after returning to the club following a two-year stint with Wigan Athletic in England. Espinoza was drafted by Kansas City in the first round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and began a five-year run that culminated with MLS All-Star honors and a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship in 2012. The 28-year-old has made 150 appearances for the club across all competitions with three goals and 17 assists.
