Sporting KC Game Notes | August 23, 2016 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC | Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES PREVIEW: SPORTING KC AT VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC WHAT IS THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Just three days after squaring off in MLS regular season play at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting Kansas City and Vancouver Whitecaps FC travel to Canada for a rematch in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. The game at BC Place in Vancouver will stream live on CONCACAF’s official Facebook Page, while additional live updates will be available via the SportingKC.com Match Tracker and through the club’s official mobile app Sporting KC Uphoria.

The CONCACAF Champions League is an international tournament comprised of the region’s best teams. The 2016-17 edition is the ninth under its current name and the 52nd installment of CONCACAF’s elite club competition since its founding in 1962. The current field consists of 24 teams from 12 different countries, as follows: four clubs each from the United States and Mexico; two clubs each from Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago; and one club from Canada, Nicaragua, Belize and Haiti. Do the math, and you have 24 contestants battling it out for CONCACAF glory.

Sporting Kansas City topped Vancouver 2-0 on Saturday behind goals from Jacob Peterson and Benny Feilhaber, moving into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference while condemning Whitecaps FC to their fourth straight league defeat. Manager Peter Vermes’ men are now 6-1-3 all-time against the Canadian club, including a five-game unbeaten run, heading into the first meeting outside of regular season competition.

HOW DID SPORTING KC QUALIFY FOR THE CCL?

Peter Vermes’ men punched their ticket via the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship. Sporting Kansas City ousted the Philadelphia Union in a gripping penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw last September to ensure their return to the Champions League following a one-year absence.

Carl Robinson’s Whitecaps have struggled in recent weeks, but they enter Tuesday with a slight advantage over their MLS counterparts in Group C. While Sporting Kansas City could only muster a 2-2 draw in their CONCACF Champions League opener last week at Central FC, Vancouver claimed a 1-0 road win over the Trinidadian outfit on Aug. 2. Consequently, a loss on Tuesday would be fatal to Sporting Kansas City’s hopes of winning the group. Vancouver would open up a commanding five-point lead with a victory and simply need a home win against underdogs Central FC to progress to next February’s quarterfinals.

WHO ARE THE OTHER CCL TEAMS FROM MLS?

Sporting Kansas City is one of five MLS representatives in the 2016-17 tournament. The others are the Portland Timbers (2015 MLS Cup champion), New York Red Bulls (2015 first-place finisher in the East), FC Dallas (2015 firstplace finisher in the West) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2015 Amway Canadian Championship winner).

Despite Sporting Kansas City’s precarious position in Group C, the club approaches the midweek fixture with no shortage of confidence, having beaten Vancouver twice at home this season while drawing 1-1 on April 27 at BC Place. Dom Dwyer bagged a brace in a 2-1 home win on March 12 before Feilhaber and Peterson were on target in Saturday’s comfortable triumph. The last time the clubs met in Vancouver, Christian Bolanos and Diego Rubio opened their MLS scoring accounts in a stalemate that saw Kendall Waston receive a red card for his second bookable offense in the 51st minute.

WHAT IS THE TOURNAMENT FORMAT OF THE CCL?

Sporting Kansas City continues play in Group C on Tuesday. The group stage divides the 24 teams into eight groups of three and is contested in a roundrobin, home-and-away, four-game format that runs from August through October. The eight group winners with then advance to the knockout round, a single-elimination format which begins with the two-legged quarterfinals in February and March 2017. The two-legged semifinals and finals are tentatively scheduled for March, April and May 2017.

Amidst a grueling stretch of five games in 15 days and with a cross-country trip to the Philadelphia Union looming this weekend, Sporting Kansas City may flex its depth in multiple positions. Vermes has rotated his lineup heavily over the last 10 days and is tasked with finding the right combination ahead of a twogame road trip that begins in British Columbia and ends 3,000 miles eastward in Pennsylvania.

The qualified teams in the knockout stage are seeded 1-8 based on their group stage results. The higher-seeded team will host the second leg, and the away goals rule is used if the aggregate score is tied through two games. If still tied, the teams will enter a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

WHY DOES THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATTER?

The 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League winner will book a spot in the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup, an international tournament held from Dec. 6-16 in the United Arab Emirates that features winners of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League and the 2017 Copa Libertadores. Lifting the CONCACAF Champions League title would thrust Sporting Kansas City onto the international scene like never before.

Sporting Kansas City’s Matt Besler has returned to full fitness and played 90 minutes on Saturday, but fellow center backs Ike Opara (heel contusion) and Lawrence Olum (adductor strain) are doubts after picking up recent knocks. Tim Melia (back spasms), Justin Mapp (calf), Chance Myers (hamstring) and Seth Sinovic (ankle) will all miss out, while Nuno Coelho’s availability is up in the air after he was forced to exit Saturday at halftime.

Mexican clubs have dominated the competition in recent years, winning all eight tournament under the current format since 2008-09. Sporting Kansas City has the chance to become the first MLS club to lift the CCL title, and doing so would arguably be the greatest achievement in club history. Lastly, CONCACAF announced in June that a prize money pool of $1.2 million will be doled out to the semifinalists for the 2016-17 tournament. The winning team will earn $500,000, with the runner-up earning $300,000 and the other two semifinalists taking home $200,000 each.

A six-game winless skid in MLS has dropped Whitecaps FC to ninth in the Western Conference table. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Robinson’s side will treat Tuesday’s showdown as an opportunity to salvage their 2016 campaign. Midfielder Matias Laba and defender Tim Parker, regular starters who were rested on Saturday, are probable additions to the starting lineup as Vancouver looks to take a stranglehold of Group C. Vancouver is competing in the CONCACAF Champions League for the second straight season, having crashed from this stage last fall in a difficult group that contained first-place finisher Seattle Sounders FC and Honduran powerhouse Olimpia. Sporting Kansas City is making its third Champions League appearance over the last four years, suffering elimination in the 2013-14 quarterfinals and the 2014-15 group stage, and will look to snap a four-game road winless run in the tournament as well as a seven-game road winless run in all competitions.

LAST TIME OUT: SPORTING KC 2-0 VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Jacob Peterson and Benny Feilhaber scored on either side of halftime as Sporting Kansas City defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2-0 on Saturday night at sold-out Children’s Mercy Park. The victory propels Sporting Kansas City (11-115, 38 points) into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference and extends the club’s regular season home winning streak to six games, the second-longest in club history.

The hosts went ahead in the 39th minute through Peterson, who equalled an MLS career-high with his fourth goal of the season, while Feilhaber sealed the result with a 64th-minute penalty kick. Eighth-place Vancouver (8-12-6, 30 points) slumped to its fourth straight league defeat and remains winless in five trips to Children’s Mercy Park. A revamped Sporting Kansas City lineup included eight changes from Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Central FC in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. Matt Besler notably returned to the fold after missing the previous five matches with an MCL strain, joining Kevin Ellis, Jimmy Medranda and winger-turned-right back Graham Zusi in defense. 3
