MATCH PREVIEW After seeing their postseason hopes dissipate in a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at rivals Saint Louis FC on Saturday, Sporting Kansas City II (4-8-1, 13 points) will embrace the role of spoiler beginning Tuesday when they visit Group D playoff hopefuls Austin Bold FC (3-36, 15 points) in a fascinating USL Championship clash at Bold Stadium in Austin. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CT with a live stream on ESPN Plus and additional in-game updates on Twitter via @SportingKCII. Guided by third-year head coach and former Sporting Kansas City great Paulo Nagamura, Sporting KC II were eliminated from postseason contention over the weekend after conceding a last-gasp goal versus their cross-state rivals. Saint Louis FC took a 2-0 halftime lead with goals from Tyler Blackwood and Russell Cicerone, but a spirited fightback saw midfielder Petar Cuic and Sporting KC Academy product Isaiah LeFlore open their Sporting KC II scoring accounts to level the score at 2-2 in the 86th mintue. With all to play for in the dying embers of the match, Saint Louis veteran Sam Fink bagged a 95th-minute winner to condemn the visitors to bitter defeat.

Sporting Kansas City II suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at Saint Louis FC on Saturday. After fighting back from a two-goal first-half deficit, Sporting II were undone deep into stoppage time as their USL Championship postseason hopes were officially dashed. Sporting KC II saw Petar Cuic and Academy prospect Isaiah LeFlore each tally their first goals of the season to complete a second-half fight back, only for Sam Fink to head home the winner in the 95th minute. Sporting II remain in fourth place in Group E and are now unable to reach the postseason after their final three regular season games.

Sporting II and Saint Louis FC traded blows early, as Remi Prieur had to be alert to catch Wal Fall’s free kick before Enoch Mushagalusa’s low cross-shot narrowly evaded a teammate and the post. The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute when former Sporting KC II striker Tyler Blackwood converted expertly on the volley after being found inside the area by Paris Gee’s header. Moments later, Fall struck the post and the ball rolled agonizingly across the line before being cleared to safety as Sporting II struggled to find a foothold in the game.

Homegrown forward Tyler Freeman almost brought Sporting II level in the 28th minute but his powerful toe-poked effort from the edge of the area was parried away by John Berner.

Four minute later, Mushagalusa sprung free behind the Saint Louis backline, but his finish rattled off the crossbar and bounced harmlessly away. Wilson Harris almost added to his team-high seven goals on the year when he struck over the bar following Freeman’s delicate through ball in the 37th minute, but it was STL that would find the net again before the break. Russell Cicerone received the ball on the left wing and cut inside two SKC II defenders before curling his finish into the bottom corner to make the halftime score 2-0.

Harris Makes History In the 55th minute of a 2-1 road win over FC Tulsa on Aug. 29, Sporting Kansas City II striker Wilson Harris etched his name into the history books.

Refusing to be beaten, Sporting II came roaring back in the second half. Croatian defensive midfielder Petar Cuic brought his side within one in the 59th minute when he placed an excellent finish off the post and in after being found by Dillon Serna – who recorded his fourth assist of the season on the play. Sporting KC Academy products Isaiah LeFlore and Ryan Fessler entered the game in the 74th minute and the two almost linked up to equalize just a minute later. A brilliant pass from Jake Davis found LeFlore with his back to goal six yards out, and he laid it off to Fessler who scuffed his effort wide.

With a clever near-post run and first-time finish off Dillon Serna’s low cross, Harris bagged his third game-winner of 2020 and took his goal tally to a team-leading five on the season, a total that now stands at seven.

Even more significantly, Harris became the youngest player ever to hit 20 career goals in the USL Championship.

After scoring three times in 2018 and adding a dozen goals last year, Harris reached the 20-goal milestone at the age of 20 years and 275 days. No other USL Championship player has accomplished the feat at a younger age.

Goalkeeper Prieur was enjoying a quiet second half until the 85th minute when he spread himself brilliantly to deny Kadeem Dacres an insurance goal for Saint Louis. That save proved important as Sporting II equalized one minute later.

Saint Louis FC made a mess of clearing Serna’s free kick with the ball deflecting into the path of LeFlore who calmly stroked his finish beyond Berner to make the score 2-2. With both sides going hammer and tongs while looking to keep their playoff hopes alive in injury time, it was Saint Louis that had the final say as Sam Fink headed home Todd Wharton’s free kick from close range in the 95th minute to give the hosts all three points.

This eye-catching achievement is the latest feather in the cap for Harris, who in 2019 was one of the top-scoring professional teenagers in the world. He led Sporting KC II with 12 goals last season and appears well on his way to taking golden boot honors for the club this time around with seven strikes.

A native of Los Angeles, Harris moved to Kansas City in 2017 to join the Sporting Kansas City Academy. He broke into the Sporting KC II squad in 2018 and has enjoyed a prolific run in the USL Championship ever since, scoring his 22 career goals in just 53 league appearances.

www.SportingKC.com/SportingKCII HEAD COACH PAULO NAGAMURA Paulo Nagamura is in his third season as head coach of Sporting KC II, having served as the assistant coach in the club’s run to the USL Cup Final in 2017 before taking the helm for a 2018 campaign that ended with a loss to Phoenix Rising FC in the Western Conference Semifinals. Nagamura, 37, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level. After two years in LA, Nagamura continued his MLS journey with Toronto FC (2007) and Chivas USA (2007-2011), becoming an MLS All-Star in 2009. Nagamura and his wife Monique have two children, Alice and Clara.

ASSISTANT COACH CHRIS MARTINEZ Assistant coach Chris Martinez is in his third season with Sporting KC II after joining the club from the Colorado Rapids, where he served as their Development Academy Program Director. Martinez, 49, also coached the Rapids Under-18 and Under-19 squads, as well as their USL Premier Development League U-23 side. The former MLS defender enjoyed a stellar playing career for the Colorado Rapids, making 119 appearances in five seasons of MLS play. Martinez played collegiate soccer at Clemson from 1989-1992 before joining American Professional Soccer League side the Colorado Foxes in 1993, winning the APSL title in his first season. Martinez then joined the Wichita Wings, who played in the National Professional Soccer League, and was named to the NPSL All-Rookie team in 1994.

GOALKEEPER COACH MITCH HILDEBRANDT Sporting KC II hired former USL Goalkeeper of the Year Mitch Hildebrandt as the team’s goalkeeper coach ahead of the 2020 campaign. The 31-year-old enjoyed a seven-year playing career, culminating in an MLS Cup prior to his retirement in early 2019. Born and raised in Michigan, he stayed local for his collegiate career, playing for Oakland University from 2008-2011. His first stop in the professional game came at Minnesota United from 2012-2015, when the current MLS club was competing in the North American Soccer League. A move to the USL Championship was on the cards in 2016 as Hildebrandt joined FC Cincinnati and quickly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league, earning Goalkeeper of the Year and USL All-League First Team honors in his first season with the club.

Standout performances earned Hildebrandt an MLS contract with Atlanta United FC in 2018, and while he did not make any appearances for the first team, he still earned a winner’s medal following Atlanta’s MLS Cup triumph.

He spent one season at the University of Akron prior to signing as a Homegrown Player with the Rapids.
