Sporting KC Game Notes | Oct. 19, 2016 vs. Central FC | Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League PREVIEW: SPORTING KC vs. CENTRAL FC

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES WHAT IS THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Sporting KC closes out the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League group stage on Wednesday against Trinidadian side Central FC. Both clubs have already been eliminated from the competition, having suffered two losses to Group C winner Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The CONCACAF Champions League is an international tournament comprised of the region’s best teams. The 2016-17 edition is the ninth under its current name and the 52nd installment of CONCACAF’s elite club competition since its founding in 1962.

Wednesday’s opponents first met on Aug. 13 in Sporting KC’s group stage opener at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago. Sporting KC came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw in an entertaining affair that produced four second-half goals. Sporting KC defenders Seth Sinovic and Kevin Ellis bookended the scoring with their first goals of the year, while Marcus Joseph and Kenwyne Jones struck for the Sharks.

The current field consists of 24 teams from 12 different countries, as follows: four clubs each from the United States and Mexico; two clubs each from Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago; and one club from Canada, Nicaragua, Belize and Haiti. Do the math, and you have 24 contestants battling it out for CONCACAF glory.

2016-17 SCCL: GROUP C STANDINGS AND RESULTS

Peter Vermes’ men punched their ticket via the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship. Sporting Kansas City ousted the Philadelphia Union in a gripping penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw last September to ensure their return to the Champions League following a one-year absence.

WHO ARE THE OTHER CCL TEAMS FROM MLS?

Sporting Kansas City is one of five MLS representatives in the 2016-17 tournament. The others are the Portland Timbers (2015 MLS Cup champion), New York Red Bulls (2015 first-place finisher in the East), FC Dallas (2015 firstplace finisher in the West) and Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2015 Amway Canadian Championship winner).

RESULT 0-1 2-2 3-0 1-2 4-1

WHAT IS THE TOURNAMENT FORMAT OF THE CCL?

Sporting Kansas City will play its Group C finale on Wednesday. The group stage divides the 24 teams into eight groups of three and is contested in a round-robin, home-and-away, four-game format that runs from August through October. The eight group winners with then advance to the knockout round, a single-elimination format which begins with the two-legged quarterfinals in February and March 2017. The two-legged semifinals and finals are tentatively scheduled for March, April and May 2017.

SPORTING KC ADDS FOUR FROM RANGERS FOR CCL MATCH

Sporting KC has added six players to its roster from the Swope Park Rangers ahead of Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League match versus Central FC at Children’s Mercy Park. Defender Ever Alvarado and midfielder Emmanuel Appiah have been recalled from their loans to SPR, while Tyler Pasher, Tomas Granitto, Alex Molano and Nansel Selbol join Sporting KC on short-term agreements. Granitto, Molano and Selbol earn their first call-ups to Sporting KC.

The qualified teams in the knockout stage are seeded 1-8 based on their group stage results. The higher-seeded team will host the second leg, and the away goals rule is used if the aggregate score is tied through two games. If still tied, the teams will enter a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

The CCL fixture comes four days before Sporting KC and the Swope Park Rangers play their biggest games of the year on Sunday. Sporting KC hosts the San Jose Earthquakes at 3 p.m. CT, knowing a Decision Day victory would clinch a club-record sixth straight playoff berth. The Rangers then look to bring a league championship back to Kansas City when they visit New York Red Bulls II in the 2016 USL Cup Final at 7 p.m. CT.

WHY DOES THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MATTER?

The 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League winner will book a spot in the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup, an international tournament held from Dec. 6-16 in the United Arab Emirates that features winners of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League and the 2017 Copa Libertadores.

Alvarado signed for Sporting KC in June and has since made three appearances for the club, including two in the CONCACAF Champions League. The 24-yearold Honduran international has also notched two assists in 12 starts for the Rangers, featuring in the club’s first two playoff wins on Sept. 30 and Oct. 9.

Mexican clubs have dominated the competition in recent years, winning all eight tournament under the current format since 2008-09. CONCACAF announced in June that a prize money pool of $1.2 million will be doled out to the semifinalists for the 2016-17 tournament. The winning team will earn $500,000, with the runner-up earning $300,000 and the other two semifinalists taking home $200,000 each.

Appiah joined Sporting KC in July and has logged three starts in all competitions, two of which in the CONCACAF Champions League. The 23-year-old rookie out of Cincinnati has played nine games for the Rangers, including all three during the club’s postseason run to the USL Cup Final.

LAST TIME OUT: SPORTING KC 0-0 REAL SALT LAKE

Pasher has enjoyed an excellent first season with the Rangers, recording five goals and four assists in 27 appearances while featuring at left wing and left back. The 22-year-old Canadian made his Sporting KC debut in a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sept. 13 at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake battled to a tense 0-0 draw Sunday at Rio Tinto Stadium in the penultimate round of the MLS regular season. The result leaves Sporting KC (12-13-8, 44 points) with the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference heading into this Sunday’s Decision Day finale against the San Jose Earthquakes at Children’s Mercy Park. A victory in that game would ensure Sporting KC a club-record sixth straight appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Granitto, 23, has started 12 of 26 appearances in his first USL campaign. The midfielder played one season of college soccer at Florida Gulf Coast in 2013 before beginning his professional career with CD Luis Angel Firpo in his native El Salvador. He spent 2015 in the NASL with FC Edmonton before linking up with the Rangers in March.

One of five Western Conference matches to kick off simultaneously in Week 33, Sunday’s contest saw both goalkeepers deliver outstanding performances to keep their opponents at bay. Sporting KC’s Tim Melia made four impressive saves, while veteran Nick Rimando notched five stops for a Real Salt Lake outfit (12-11-10, 46 points) that moved up to fourth place in the West but failed to secure a playoff berth.

Molano, 24, signed for the Swope Park Rangers in January after attending open tryouts last November. The midfielder has started eight of 18 appearances, tallying one goal and one assist, and played professionally in Europe from 2009-2014. He spent the 2015 campaign with hometown club Dallas City FC, competing in the NPSL South Region.

Manager Peter Vermes made four changes to the Sporting KC lineup as veterans Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic, Roger Espinoza and Graham Zusi returned to the fold. With Jacob Peterson sidelined due to a hamstring strain and Diego Rubio out for the year with an ACL injury, Espinoza and Zusi joined Dom Dwyer to form a three-pronged attack. Paulo Nagamura earned his 100th career start for Sporting KC in all competitions, patrolling the midfield alongside Benny Feilhaber and Soni Mustivar.

Selbol, 19, joined the Rangers at the beginning of the year from the Sporting KC Academy. A native of Jos, Nigeria, Selbol has made 24 USL appearances in his first professional season. The dynamic forward starred for the Sporting KC U-18s during the first half of the 2015-16 USSDA campaign, leading the team with 10 league goals. In July, he helped the U-18s advance to the quarterfinals of the USSDA playoffs for the first time. 4

Sporting KC Game Notes | Oct. 19, 2016 vs. Central FC | Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES DECISION DAY: SPORTING KC PLAYOFF SCENARIOS DIEGO RUBIO OUT FOR YEAR WITH ACL INJURY Sunday’s hotly contested 0-0 draw between Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake leaves it all to play for on Decision Day when 10 MLS matches kick off simultaneously this Sunday at 3 p.m. CT to close out the 2016 MLS regular season. For Sporting KC, the underlying message is simple: Win, and we’re in.

Sporting KC forward Diego Rubio suffered a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee during training last Friday and will miss the remainder of the 2016 MLS season, the club announced Sunday. Rubio will undergo surgery in the near future and will return to Sporting KC for the 2017 season.

Manager Peter Vermes’ men hold the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference heading into next weekend’s all-important finale against the already-eliminated San Jose Earthquakes. While the LA Galaxy have the No. 3 seed wrapped up, Sporting KC, Seattle Sounders FC, Real Salt Lake and Portland Timbers could all finish anywhere between fourth (and a home playoff game) and seventh (and an unwelcome end to the year).

Rubio has recorded three goals and one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions since joining Sporting KC on loan in March. The 23-year-old Chilean completed his permanent transfer from Spanish side Real Valladolid to Sporting KC in September. Last month, Rubio became the first player in club history to score in the MLS regular season, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League in the same year. He opened his 2016 scoring account in a 1-1 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 27 and notched the game-winner in extra time of a 2-1 U.S. Open Cup victory over Minnesota United FC on June 15. Rubio then tallied his first goal at Children’s Mercy Park in a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Vancouver on Sept. 13.

While they share identical records with 44 points apiece, Sporting KC holds a tiebreaker over Portland by virtue of goal differential: Sporting KC is at minus-1, Portland at minus-2. Interestingly enough, both Sporting KC and Portland will make the playoffs if they win their final matches. That’s because Real Salt Lake (46 points) and Seattle (45 points) square off next Sunday, meaning one of the two will finish with 46 points or fewer.

A native of Santiago, Chile, Rubio has netted 40 goals and added 16 assists since turning professional in 2011 at age 17. After rising from the youth ranks to the senior team at hometown club Colo-Colo, Rubio moved overseas to Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he scored 22 times for Sporting B from 2011-2015. The striker made 20 first-team appearances for Sporting while also going on loan to Romanian side Pandurii Targu Jiu in 2013 and Norwegian outfit Sandnes Ulf in 2014.

With a win over San Jose, OR With a tie vs. San Jose AND and Portland loss or tie at Vancouver Whitecaps FC With a loss to San Jose AND a Portland loss at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, as long as Sporting KC has a better goal differential than Portland.

How can Sporting KC clinch the No. 4 seed and a home playoff game?

Rubio earned three caps for the Chile Men’s National Team in 2011 at age 18 before playing eight matches at the U-20 level from 2012-2013.

Should Sporting KC qualify for the playoffs, the Western Conference Knockout Round match would be held either Wednesday, Oct. 26 or Thursday, Oct. 27. A victory in that game would propel Sporting KC to the Western Conference semifinals, where the club would host the first leg on Sunday, Oct. 30.

BESLER AND ESPINOZA LAND TEAM OF THE WEEK HONORS

Defender Matt Besler and midfielder Roger Espinoza made emphatic returns to the Sporting KC lineup on Sunday, delivering standout performances in a fiercely contested 0-0 draw at Real Salt Lake. Both players were recognized for their enormous outings on Monday as Peter Vermes’ men collected a valuable point in their quest for a sixth straight playoff appearance. Besler was named to the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week, while Espinoza landed a spot on Bleacher Report’s Team of the Week. Besler — widely labeled man of the match in the United States’ 1-1 friendly draw with New Zealand last Tuesday — returned to his hometown club this weekend and anchored a defense that kept Real Salt Lake scoreless. The center back stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high five clearances in addition to four recoveries, four interceptions and three duels won. Besler’s biggest defensive intervention came in the 56th minute when he slid at full extension to prevent Demar Phillips’ cutback from reaching Yura Movsisyan in front of a gaping net. Espinoza was deployed as a forward in Sporting KC’s 4-3-3 setup for the first time in his career. And while he looked dangerous at times in the attacking third — his perfectly weighted cross for Dom Dwyer nearly resulted in an 86th-minute winner — Espinoza was exemplary on the defensive side. The industrious Honduran won 17 duels and logged seven interceptions, both the most among all MLS players in Week 33.
