On the attacking side of the ball, the Young Harris College alumni has scored two goals and notched two assists during the 2017 campaign as well. Should Craig earn the title, he would be the second LouCity player to be named the USL Defender of the Year in the club’s three-year history.

Finally, the mastermind on the sideline, head coach James O’Connor, is in the running for USL Coach of the Year. In his third season with the club, O’Connor has shown steady improvement and set a high standard for the club’s level of play since being brought on ahead of the inaugural season in 2015. Entering the playoffs as a two-seed and being eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals in both of his first two seasons, the Irishman led the “Boys in Purple” to a top seed in the Eastern Conference this season and has earned a berth in the USL Cup for the first time ever.

While waiting for the announcement of the winners for USL awards on November 20 and November 21, Louisville CIty first looks to add the ultimate prize to their trophy case on Monday night: the USL Cup.

JAMES O’CONNOR - HEAD COACH Named Louisville City FC’s first head coach on June 4, 2014, James O’Connor has guided the club to a pair of highly successful seasons, both of them capped by appearances in the United Soccer League’s Eastern Conference Final. Since entering the USL, LouCity has accumulated more points, goals and assists than any other club. Among his other accomplishments are coaching the 2015 USL MVP (Matt Fondy) and Defensive Player of the Year (Bryan Burke), as well as the 2016 Midseason MVP (Chandler Hoffman). Kyle Smith also went from open tryout signing to USL Midseason Rookie of the Year in 2016.

In his first year as head coach, O’Connor led LouCity to a quick start, including a 2-0 win over Saint Louis FC in the club’s inaugural game on March 28, 2015.

On its way to a 14-8-6 USL finish, LouCity made a strong showing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, navigating into the fourth round before falling in extra time to MLS’ Chicago Fire. O’Connor and LouCity also defeated Orlando City SC in a friendly at Slugger Field on Aug. 25, 2015, flashing form that would earn the club a USL playoff bye. LouCity fell to eventual champion Rochester in the league semifinal.

O’Connor did a masterful job in 2016 after losing Fondy, who scored a USL-record 22 goals in 28 games, as well as Burke and midfielder Juan Guzman to higher-level clubs. LouCity tallied even more points than in 2015 — 60, up from 48 — and pieced together a 17-game unbeaten streak that stretched from early April through mid-July. A tight battle for first place in the Eastern Conference went to the New York Red Bulls II, though LouCity posted impressive marks in goals (52) and goals allowed (27) in 2016. The club won a pair of playoff games before falling to the Red Bulls who, as with Rochester, went on to take the title.

DANIEL BYRD - ASSISTANT COACH Daniel Byrd has served as LouCity’s assistant coach since its inaugural season, working alongside head coach James O’Connor during a pair of memorable United Soccer League campaigns. The club finished second in the Eastern Conference both years and has, since entering the USL, tallied more points, goals and assists than any other team. Both years concluded with appearances in the Eastern Conference Final.

Byrd is well traveled having grown up in Zambia and Mozambique as a member of a missionary family. He picked up soccer in Africa and played collegiately upon moving to the United States for Johnson University in Tennessee from 2000-2004. There, he was captain and leading scorer. Immediately following college, he pursued mission work in Africa and Brazil, using soccer as a platform for community outreach.

Byrd met O’Connor while working with Orlando City SC’s youth squad. Professionally, he also played for the Cleveland City Stars, a former USL member, and has coached at the high school level in Tennessee along with college for St. Catharine in Springfield, Ky.

THABANE SUTU - GOALKEEPERS COACH Since joining Louisville City FC for its inaugural season, Thabane Sutu, a local soccer coaching legend, has established excellence in the club’s goalkeepers and showcased an ability to quickly develop talent. Scott Goodwin posted a 1.19 goals against average between the posts in LouCity’s inaugural season.

Goodwin started 2016 strong as well before announcing his departure for Harvard Medical School. Greg Ranjitsingh, who arrived to LouCity as a rookie, stepped in and went five straight games without allowing a goal. Ranjitsingh transformed into an international talent, called up in the fall to train with Trinidad and Tobago during World Cup qualifiers. In his absence, Tim Dobrowolski registered a shutout in his only start of the year.

Sutu, also well known for his private coaching in Louisville, serves as technical director at United 1996 Futbol Club, a noted youth program. He started there in 2001 after spending several years playing for many well-known clubs from around the world.

Before settling in Louisville, Sutu, a native of Lesotho, served as captain of the national team from 1994 to 1997. During that time he also won four championships: one Arab League title in 1995 and three straight Egyptian League titles from 1994 to 1996.
