SPORTING KANSAS CITY 2020 MLS AWARD CONTENDERS
Coach of the Year Peter Vermes
Newcomer of the Year Alan Pulido
Goal of the Year Erik Hurtado
Peter Vermes finished sixth in MLS Coach of the Year voting in 2020. Now in his 12th year as manager, Vermes is the league’s longest tenured head coach. He has led Sporting KC to nine playoff appearances in the last 10 seasons, including four major championships and four first-place finishes during that time. Vermes is the first MLS head coach to make nine playoff appearances with a single club. The fifth winningest coach in MLS all-time, Vermes led SKC to the single-greatest turnaround in league history from 2019 to 2020 (21st to 3rd overall, 11th to 1st in West) and Sporting’s highest points per game (1.86) in the club’s regular season history.
Alan Pulido finished third in MLS Newcomer of the Year voting in 2020. The 29-year-old Designated Player joined SKC on a club-record transfer fee from Chivas de Guadalajara and was one of the league’s most well-rounded attackers this year. Tallying team-highs with six goals and five assists in 12 regular season appearances, the Mexican forward leads MLS newcomers and ranks third overall with 0.92 combined goals and assists per game. Pulido is also the first player since Josh Wolff in 2005 to lead the club in both goals and assists, and he’s the first newcomer to lead the team in both categories since Preki in Major League Soccer’s inaugural 1996 season.
Erik Hurtado’s stunning volley in Sporting’s 2-1 win over Nashville on Oct. 11 is one of 16 nominees for MLS Goal of the Year. Hurtado’s technique and execution to steer a high-arching long ball from Amadou Dia into the far left corner had all the makings of a perfect volley and drew comparisons to Marco van Basten’s famous strike for the Netherlands in the 1988 European Championship. A strong second season in Kansas City saw Hurtado become one of five Sporting players to hit at least five goals over the course of the regular season. Among players with at least three goals in 2020, Hurtado leads MLS with 1.2 goals per 90 minutes played.

HOW THE WEST WAS WON: SPORTING KC 2020 SEASON IN REVIEW Peter Vermes Worked His Magic
Sporting Kansas City’s Defense is Clicking at the Right Time
Written By: Sam Kovzan
Written By: Sam Kovzan
Peter Vermes’ resume speaks for itself.
If peaking at the right time is the main objective, Sporting Kansas City’s defense appears to have checked that box. Since the start of October, Manager Peter Vermes’ men lead MLS with a 0.63 goals against average and four shutouts. That stretch also includes an active 270-minute shutout streak, which has seen goalkeeper Tim Melia collect three consecutive clean sheets heading into the playoffs.
The longest tenured manager in MLS history, Vermes has led Sporting to four major championships since 2012, with four first-place conference finishes and nine playoff appearances in the last 10 seasons. Has has the fifth-most wins in MLS history and more games coached for a single club than anyone else in the league. In addition to winning the 2013 MLS Cup and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles, he has become the first coach to lead one club to nine playoff appearances and has doubled the number of first-place conference finishes (four) compared to any other coach since 2011. At the start of 2020, this season was billed as a critically important campaign for a Sporting side that saw its club-record eight-year playoff streak come to an end in 2019. Well, consider 2020 an emphatic return to normalcy for Vermes and SKC. First and foremost, Vermes’ side successfully secured the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference for the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. The club’s 12-6-3 record yielded a final tally of 1.86 points per game in the regular season, the highest in Kansas City’s 25-year history. Perhaps more impressively, however, Vermes has orchestrated arguably the greatest year-over-year turnaround that Major League Soccer has ever seen. In 2019, Sporting finished 11th in the Western Conference and 21st in the Supporters’ Shield standings. Sporting has vaulted from 11th to first in the West and 21st to third in the Supporters’ Shield table. Both of those jumps are the largest year-over-year improvements in MLS history. Sporting’s momentous uptick was a fitting reward for the adversity and unpredictability that players and coaches faced over the course of the year. The 2020 regular season had the earliest start date on Feb. 29, the latest end date on Nov. 8, and required clubs to start and stop no less than three times in between. That’s not to mention the fact that Vermes has had to cope with injuries to key contributors such as Designated Player Felipe Gutierrez — who was out for the year — Matt Besler, Graham Zusi, Alan Pulido and others. ”Unfortunately, the year didn’t go as planned but we stayed the course and we stayed true to who we are,” Vermes said, “We remained loyal and committed to our culture and we believed.”
Over the course of a long and winding MLS campaign, Vermes has called upon numerous defenders in the push for first place. With untimely injuries popping up along the backline, the process hasn’t always been easy. Roberto Puncec is the only defender with 13 or more appearances, which ultimately makes Sporting’s success all the more impressive. Despite the lack of consistency on and off the pitch, Vermes’ men have remained at or near the top of the conference every step of the way. GK Tim Melia In 20 starts this season, Melia boasts an 11-5-3 record with seven shutouts, 56 saves and a 1.06 goals against average. He is also, inarguably, the premier penalty kick saver in MLS. That could prove decisive in the singleelimination playoffs. CB Roberto Puncec The 29-year-old center back has quietly enjoyed an excellent debut season in MLS. Puncec has played the full 90 minutes in all seven of Sporting’s shutouts this season and leads the team in passes (910), successful passes (793), interceptions (25), clearances (59) and blocks (11). LB Amadou Dia The high-energy left back spent 2015 and 2016 in Kansas City before a trade to Montreal and a three-year stint with Phoenix Rising FC in the USL Championship. Dia returned to Sporting in January and became a regular starter by September. RB Jaylin Lindsey The 20-year-old Sporting KC Academy product had to wait until August to make his first appearance of the season, but he has been an invaluable contributor since then. Following an injury to Graham Zusi on Oct. 7, Lindsey started Sporting’s final six matches of the campaign. During that period, Sporting went 4-1-1 and posted three shutouts. LB Luis Martins Martins began the year brilliantly, tallying an assist in a season-opening win at Vancouver and impressing in a 4-0 defeat of Houston in Week 2. The Portuguese left back experienced an injury setback following the MLS is Back Tournament and has featured sporadically since then, but he did go the full 90 minutes in a Decision Day win at RSL on Nov. 8. CB Winston Reid The hulking New Zealand center back is arguably the most talented defender on Sporting’s roster. Reid, who boasts almost a decade of experience in the English Premier League with West Ham United, has a 5-1-2 record as a starter. If he can stay fit for the duration of the playoffs, expect Sporting to be awfully tough to break down. CB Matt Besler Injuries have hampered Besler’s 2020 campaign, but the fact remains that no one on Sporting’s roster boasts more playoff experience than the Kansas City native. A club legend and a face of the franchise, Besler has helped lead Sporting to four major championships since 2012. The longtime captain would add a cherry on top with another MLS Cup title. CB Graham Smith The skillful center back was excellent at the MLS is Back Tournament and earned a run of regular starts from late July to early September. Smith hasn’t featured since Sept. 2, but Sporting would have no concern if he was called upon in the postseason. CB Andreu Fontas Fontas offered a feel-good story in the late stages of the season, overcoming a long-term Achilles injury to make his way back into the Sporting lineup. The 31-year-old Spaniard has given an excellent account of himself in three appearances in October, notably scoring in a shutout home win over the Colorado Rapids. Like Smith, Fontas hasn’t played much in 2020, but he has earned the trust of his teammates and coaches if called upon.
Title Town: Kansas City has Become a City of Champions As Sporting prepares to pursue a third MLS Cup title, it’s worth noting that the city in which it plays has developed a championship DNA. Spanning both sides of the Kansas-Missouri border, the Kansas City metro is home to three major professional sports franchises—each of which has been crowned a league champion since 2013. Sporting KC, of course, hoisted the 2013 MLS Cup following an epic penalty shootout victory over Real Salt Lake at Children’s Mercy Park. Two years later, the Kansas City Royals reached the summit of Major League Baseball by defeating the New York Mets in the World Series. Most recently, the Kansas City Chiefs became kings of the National Football League with a Super Bowl LIV win over the San Francisco 49ers. Add that all up, and Kansas City is one of just two markets in the United States and Canada to boast league championships in three of the five major pro sports leagues (MLS, NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL). HOW THE WEST WAS WON: SPORTING KC 2020 SEASON IN REVIEW Sporting Kansas City’s Midfield Mix Boasts Veteran Experience and Promising Youth in Equal Parts
Sporting KC Features One of the Most Prolific and Well-Balanced Attacks in Major League Soccer
Written By: Sam Kovzan
Written By: Sam Kovzan
At the start of the season, select pundits and MLS observers questioned whether Sporting had enough quality and depth in the midfield to make up for the absence of Chilean international Felipe Gutierrez. The club’s 2019 MVP would miss the 2020 campaign through injury, leaving a sizable void to fill in the center of the park. Little did people know that Sporting’s most trusted midfielders—the grizzled, box-to-box Roger Espinoza and the savvy, deep-lying Ilie Sanchez—would be joined by one of the league’s best newcomers in Gadi Kinda plus a slew of emerging homegrown talents to form a group that contributed invaluably to a first-place finish.
Sporting Kansas City scored in all but one of their 21 regular season fixtures over the course of 2020 and ended the regular season with 38 goals scored—an impressive clip of 1.81 per game, the third-best average in the club’s history. In the process, Sporting spread the scoring wealth as the only MLS team to have four players with at least five regular season goals. That list includes the three players who finished tied atop the club’s golden boot race—Alan Pulido, Johnny Russell and midfielder Gadi Kinda bagged six each—as well as Khiry Shelton and Erik Hurtrado, who added five apiece.
Gadi Kinda The 26-year-old Israeli was an absolute revelation in his first season with Sporting. Kinda finished tied for the team lead with six regular season goals and placed second with four assists, starting 16 of 18 appearances over the course of the year. Few would have begrudged the player for taking time to settle into a new league, a new country and a new culture. Instead, Kinda landed MLS Team of the Week honors in Weeks 1 and 2—the only MLS player to do so—and ended the campaign just as he started it, recording two goals and two assists in his final three games.
Alan Pulido The 29-year-old Mexican was every bit as good as advertised in his debut MLS season. Arriving from Chivas de Guadalajara on a club-record transfer fee last December, Pulido led Sporting in both goals (seven) and assists (five) across all competitions despite missing almost half the season either through injury or on international duty. The uber-talented forward was one of three finalists for the 2020 MLS Newcomer of the Year award and boasts an 8-2-1 record as a starter. The big question mark surrounding Pulido is whether he will be fit enough to feature for Sporting in the playoffs.
Roger Espinoza The two-time World Cup veteran turned 34 in October but continues to make life miserable for opponents with his tireless engine. Espinoza, who ranks among Sporting’s leaders in tackles and duels, also provided multiple goals for just the second time in his 11 seasons at the club. He opened his scoring account in a memorable home-opening win over Houston on March 7 before bagging the game-winner in a 1-0 defeat of FC Cincinnati on Oct. 28.
Johnny Russell Russell has pieced together three straight seasons chalk full of excellent attacking performances in a Sporting uniform. The Scottish international added six goals and four assists in 2020 and was particularly rampant at Children’s Mercy Park, where he notched five goals and three assists. That could bode especially well for a Sporting side that will have homefield advantage on the Western Conference side of the playoff bracket. For good measure, Russell also had a team-best 31 chances created and finished among the league leaders in touches in the opponent’s box.
Ilie Sanchez It should be no coincidence that Sporting’s red-hot 6-1-1 finish to the regular season coincided with Ilie’s excellent form in the holding midfield spot. Following the MLS is Back Tournament in July, he returned to Spain to spend time with his ailing father and missed six games in the process. Sporting went just 2-2-2 during that stretch. Upon his return, and after his father sadly passed away, Ilie flourished on the field. In the 13 games he started this season, Sporting went 10-2-1. In the eight games he didn’t, Sporting were 2-4-2. That tells you all you need to know about Ilie’s value to the team.
Khiry Shelton In 40 career regular season appearances for Sporting, Khiry Shelton has a remarkable 24-8-8 record and .700 winning percentage. The takeaway here? When Shelton plays, Sporting generally wins. This statistic spans the 2018 and 2020 seasons, as the versatile forward spent 2019 in Germany with SC Paderborn 07. Shelton has hit a career-high with five goals in 2020 and ranks near the top of the MLS charts in chances created from open play and duels won among forwards.
Gianluca Busio The 18-year-old has enjoyed his best professional season to date, showcasing his talents in three positions as an integral member of Vermes’ 4-3-3 setup. Deployed primarily as a central midfielder, Busio held holding midfield duties during Ilie’s absence and during that time ranked among the MLS leaders in successful passes and tackles won. He has also been used as a winger in attack, and his one goal and three assists suggest that the U.S. youth international is perfectly capable of helping Sporting create goals.
Erik Hurtado Arguably no player in MLS has been more productive during his time on the pitch than Hurtado. The 30-year-old has matched his career high with five goals, doing so in just 376 minutes of action. His 1.2 goals per 90 minutes lead MLS, and his world-class volley from a 2-1 win over Nashville SC on Oct. 11 is a surefire contender for AT&T MLS Goal of the Year.
Felipe Hernandez After winning Sporting KC II MVP honors in 2019, Hernandez jumped from the USL Championship to MLS in impressive fashion this summer. His impressive 2020 debut against Real Salt Lake in the MLS is Back Tournament marked the start of an increased role for Hernandez, who has started eight and featured in 16 of Sporting’s last 17 regular season matches. The 22-year-old Sporting KC Academy product is often likened to Espinoza for his bulldogged approach in the center of the pitch.
Gerso Fernandes As a part-time starter and part-time specialty sub, Gerso tallied three goals and three assists during a strong fourth season in Kansas City. In the span of 19 appearances, Gerso hasn’t gone longer than three games without a goal or an assist. His blistering pace on the wing makes him particularly hard to deal with for opposing defenses. Daniel Salloi Salloi has yet to find the back of the net this year, but don’t forget what he did the last time Sporting went to the playoffs. The Homegrown forward had three goals in two home playoff matches in 2018, including a brace against Real Salt Lake in leg two of the Western Conference Semifinals. Salloi has a history of scoring in big battles at Children’s Mercy Park, having also provided the game-winner in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final.
Cam Duke The 19-year-old Sporting KC Academy product has made eight appearances this season, including starts in a pair of results against FC Dallas and Chicago Fire FC. Duke has repeatedly earned Vermes’ praise over the course of 2020, and the general consensus is that we’ll see plenty more of the explosive youngster in the years to come.
Wilson Harris and Tyler Freeman Aged 20 and 17, respectively, Harris and Freeman are two Sporting KC Academy products who have yet to make their MLS debuts. They may not feature during the club’s playoff run, but they are undeniably a pair of promising talents to keep an eye on moving forward.
Wan Kuzain A former standout for Sporting KC II and a 2018 USL Championship Young Player of the Year finalist, the American-born Kuzain is regarded as one of Malaysia’s most promising talents. He broke onto the scene when he opened his MLS scoring account in 2018 and has spent all of 2020 with the first team, having featured regularly at the USL Championship level from 2017-2019.

The Audi MLS Cup Playoffs will consist of 17 single-elimination matches hosted by the higher-seeded team and follow a straight bracket format through MLS Cup on Dec.12. In an expansion of the postseason for 2020, 18 clubs will compete in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. Eight teams from the 12-team Western Conference will qualify directly to Round 1. The top six seeds from the 14-team Eastern Conference will qualify directly to Round 1. Eastern Conference seeds 7-10 will each compete in a play-in match (No. 7 vs. No. 10, and No. 8 vs. No. 9). The lower-seeded advancing team will face the Eastern Conference No. 1 seed in Round 1, while the higher-seeded advancing team will face the Eastern Conference No. 2 seed.
EXTRA TIME AND PENALTY SHOOTOUTS
If a match is tied through 90 minutes of regulation, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played in their entirety. If the score remains tied after the extra time periods, a penalty shootout will determine the winner. One additional substitute (a sixth substitute) will be available to clubs during the two 15-minute extra time periods. The sixth substitute becomes available to both clubs in extra time regardless of the number of substitutions made by the club during regulation. An additional substitution event will also be available to both clubs in the extra time period, not including any substitutions made between the end of regulation and the start of the first extra time period or at halftime between the extra time periods.
MLS CUP PLAYOFFS DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES • • •
Yellow card accumulation thresholds for all players are reset entering the playoffs. A player who reaches a yellow card accumulation threshold in their last MLS regular season match is eligible for the playoffs. A player who receives a straight red card or second yellow card (thus a red card) in his last MLS regular season match is suspended for the next match for which he would otherwise be eligible including a playoff match(es). A player sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee during the regular season and/or playoffs will have any corresponding suspension applied to the next match(es) for which he is eligible including a playoff match(es) or the next regular season match(es).
YELLOW CARD ACCUMULATION • • •
Once the playoffs begin and up until MLS Cup (when playoff yellow card accumulation will again reset), a player receiving a yellow card in two consecutive matches will be suspended for their next match unless their next match is MLS Cup at which point the player’s yellow card total resets. For clarification, a player who earns his second consecutive yellow card in the Conference Championship is eligible to play in MLS Cup. If a player’s club does not advance a round in the playoffs after receiving a second consecutive yellow card, the suspension will not carry over to the next MLS regular season. A player who is issued two yellow cards in the same match is suspended for the next match for which he is eligible including MLS Cup or his next regular season match.
RED CARDS AND YELLOW CARD ACCUMULATION A player who earns a straight red card in the same match in which he previously earned his second consecutive yellow card will be suspended for his next two playoff matches unless the second of the two matches is MLS Cup in which case the player’s total yellow card accumulation resets. Example: A player earns a yellow card in his Round One match. He then earns a yellow card (his second consecutively) in the Conference Semifinal and a straight red card (different from earning a second yellow card) in the same match. The player is suspended for the Conference Final (for his red card) but is eligible to play in MLS Cup (in which yellow cards reset). Red Card Suspensions A player who earns a red card in any playoff match, whether a straight red card or two yellow cards, is suspended for his next match (if this occurs in MLS Cup, then the suspension carries over to the first regular season match of the following season). Disciplinary Committee Under Video Review, the Disciplinary Committee will only act on red card incidents which warrant a two or more game suspension. A player sanctioned by the Disciplinary Committee will have any corresponding suspension applied to the next match(es) for which he is eligible including any playoff match(es), MLS Cup or the following MLS regular season. In instances in which a player receives a yellow card in a match and the Disciplinary Committee acts to suspend the player for the offense, the yellow card will not count toward the player’s cumulative yellow card total. When Video Review is non-operational, or the VAR Protocol is misapplied, supplemental discipline can be applied per the 2020 Competition Manual. All incidents reviewed by the Disciplinary Committee in the playoffs will be evaluated in the same manner and through the same process as has been done during the regular season.
