Sporting KC Game Notes | March 11, 2017 vs. FC Dallas | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes #SKCvDAL: HEAD-TO-HEAD
#SKCvDAL: BY THE NUMBERS
Sporting Kansas City takes on FC Dallas in the club’s season opener having gone unbeaten at home against their Texas-based opponents since 2011, including a 4-0-0 mark in their last four home games against Dallas in all competitions. Sporting KC claimed a point in their season opener against D.C. United in their lastever visit to RFK Stadium in the nation’s capital. Goalkeeper Tim Melia was the hero, producing a stunning double save in the first half to keep out Marcelo Sarvas’ penalty kick and Patrick Mullins’ follow-up. Peter Vermes’ men have reason to be optimistic ahead of Saturday’s showdown, having posted a 13-2-6 record in home openers and gone a dominant 14-8-6 in home games against Dallas. Since moving to Children’s Mercy Park in 2011, Sporting KC is 4-1-1, with the lone defeat coming in Dallas’ first visit to the stadium on Aug. 27, 2011. In 2016, the two sides split the season series 1-1-1, though Sporting KC outscored Dallas 5-4 in the three meetings. Dallas took the first matchup, coming from behind to claim a 2-1 win at Toyota Stadium on April 17, before Sporting KC exacted their revenge with a 2-0 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on June 19. In the final meeting of 2016, the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw in Dallas on Aug. 13. Sporting KC leads the all-time series between the two sides, going 23-21-11. SKC is 9-13-5 on the road against Dallas, including a 2-5-4 mark since Dallas moved to Toyota Stadium in 2005. The 2016 season marked the first occasion that Sporting KC paid two visits to Toyota Stadium in the same year, having shifted back to the Western Conference in 2015 after a 10-year stint in the East. In 2017, Sporting KC will play host to Dallas twice (March 11, Aug. 19) and visit Toyota Stadium just once on April 22.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES THE ZUS IS LOOSE
Since moving to Children’s Mercy Park in 2011, Sporting KC is unbeaten (2-0-4) in six MLS home openers, scoring seven goals and conceding just three, with three shutouts. A Dom Dwyer first-half double earned Sporting KC a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC in last season’s home opener on March 12, 2016.
Defender/midfielder Graham Zusi has his own impressive scoring past against FC Dallas. In 10 appearances against the side, Zusi has three goals and five assists, with many of them coming in bunches. The 30-year-old recorded his first-ever career multi-goal game and added an assist against Dallas during a 4-1 victory at Toyota Stadium on June 12, 2011. Zusi then assisted on both goals as Sporting KC came from behind to notch a 2-1 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on March 25, 2012 before adding a goal and two assists including the game-winning assist - in the 4-0 thrashing at CMP on May 29, 2015.
All-time, Sporting KC is 13-2-6 in home openers with the lone losses coming in 1999 against the Chicago Fire and 2009 against Toronto FC. Peter Vermes’ men have faced Dallas in the club’s home opener once before, playing to a 1-1 draw on March 15, 2014 after Aurelien Collin’s late goal was cancelled out by Matt Hedges. Home openers at Children’s Mercy Park: Date Game 3/12/2016 Sporting KC 2-1 Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3/08/2015 Sporting KC 1-1 New York Red Bulls 3/15/2014 Sporting KC 1-1 FC Dallas 3/16/2013 Sporting KC 0-0 Chicago Fire 3/17/2012 Sporting KC 3-0 New England Revolution 6/09/2011 Sporting KC 0-0 Chicago Fire*
In his third MLS appearance at right back during the season opener at D.C. United last Saturday, Zusi won a MLS career-high 10 duels, while his four successful crosses from open play led the league in Week 1. His performance earned him a spot on the Goal.com MLS Team of the Week.

MELIA THE MAGNIFICENT
On Saturday, goalkeeper Tim Melia maintained a shutout for his side with an outstanding double save to deny Marcelo Sarvas’ penalty and Patrick Mullins’ rebound attempt as Sporting KC headed back from D.C. with a 0-0 draw.
*Stadium Opener
DALLAS DATES
It was the second time in his career that Melia had saved a penalty and recorded at least five saves in a shutout, following up his performance in Sporting KC’s 2-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls on April 9, 2016.
Sporting KC has edged the all-time series with FC Dallas, going 23-21-11 against the Texas side since both teams entered the league in 1996. Sporting KC has posted a 148-6 record at home, outscoring FC Dallas 53-35 in the 28 matches held in Kansas City.
Melia was one of four goalkeepers to face a penalty in Week 1 and was joined by Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando in making a save to preserve his team’s shutout. The 30-yearold has now saved a quarter of the penalty kicks he has faced in MLS (two of eight), with his two saves both coming in his last four faced. Melia also recorded five saves in the shutout, with only Orlando’s Joe Bendik recording more saves in Week 1 with six. Melia was rewarded for his performance with an inclusion on the bench of the MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week.
The home side is unbeaten in the last nine regular-season contests between Sporting KC and FC Dallas, stretching back six years to when FC Dallas claimed a 3-2 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on Aug. 27, 2011. Since that game, Sporting KC is 5-0-1 at home against Dallas in all competitions - including a 4-0-0 mark in their last four meetings in Kansas City - and 4-0-1 in the MLS regular season. In 2016, the two sides split the season series 1-1-1. FC Dallas drew first blood, claiming a 2-1 victory at Toyota Stadium on April 17 when goals from Michael Barrios and Mauro Rosales pegged SKC back after Lawrence Olum had given the visitors the lead. On June 19, first-half goals from Benny Feilhaber and Olum saw Sporting KC respond with a 2-0 victory at Children’s Mercy Park before the two sides battled to a 2-2 draw at Toyota Stadium on Aug. 13 when Dom Dwyer’s double was cancelled out by Tesho Akindele and Maxi Urruti.
NIFTY NEWCOMERS
Sporting KC’s opening day lineup against D.C. United included two new faces in Ilie Sanchez and Gerso Fernandes. Both players arrived in the offseason from clubs in Spain and Portugal, respectively, and went the full 90 minutes as Sporting KC battled to a 0-0 draw on the road in the side’s season opener. Ilie provided immediate stability to the Sporting KC midfield, with his 85 pass attempts ranking third in all of MLS in Week 1, while his 68 completed passes ranked fifth. The 26-year-old Spaniard also made a key intervention in the opening stages when he blocked Jared Jeffrey’s goal-bound shot inside the area following a D.C. counter.
HISTORY SIGNALS A CHALLENGE
In FC Dallas, Sporting KC will be facing the reigning Supporters’ Shield and U.S. Open Cup champions in Saturday’s home opener at Children’s Mercy Park. Sporting KC has posted a respectable 13-19-11 record against reigning Supporters’ Shield champions in the club’s 22-year history, though the side has struggled against U.S. Open Cup champions, going 9-25-13 against the most recent MLS opponents to win the knockout tournament. Sporting KC won the Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and are three-time U.S. Open Cup winners, having hoisted the trophy in 2004, 2012 and 2015.
Gerso deputized on the left wing in his debut for the club and was a constant thorn in D.C.’s side. Gerso led MLS in dribbles attempted during the opening weekend with 11 and was tied for first in dribbles completed with five. The Guinea-Bissau native also whipped in six crosses, finding Dom Dwyer with one that the forward headed over, while he took four shots and one shot on goal in an eventful debut.
FEILHABER THRIVES AGAINST DALLAS
GOLDEN BOY
Sporting KC midfielder Benny Feilhaber enjoys facing FC Dallas. In fact, with four goals and six assists in the regular season, Feilhaber has both scored and assisted more goals against Dallas than against any other team in MLS. In all competitions, Feilhaber has four goals and seven assists in his last seven games against Dallas.
Sporting KC Homegrown defender Erik Palmer-Brown led the U.S. Under-20 National Team to CONCACAF U-20 Championship glory - and qualification to the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup in South Korea - as the U.S. claimed a 5-3 penalty kick victory over Honduras following 0-0 draw last Sunday. Palmer-Brown, who started every game of the tournament as captain, also claimed the Golden Ball honor, given to the best player of the tournament.
In his three games against Dallas in 2016, Feilhaber posted an assist in the first matchup, a goal and an assist in the second, and added another assist in the third and final for a grand total of one goal and three assists in three games vs. Dallas.
The 19-year-old started all three group games for the U.S. in a defensive midfield role, helping the team recover from a shaky opening day defeat to Panama to see off Haiti and St. Kitts and Nevis to advance to the classification stage. There, Palmer-Brown scored the only goal of the game with a first-half header against Mexico as the U.S. U-20s recorded their first victory over their counterparts in 31 years.
On Sept. 18, 2015, Feilhaber produced his second multi-goal game in MLS regularseason play when he scored the opening two goals in a 3-1 victory over FC Dallas at Children’s Mercy Park.
The U.S. then topped El Salvador to confirm participation in the U-20 World Cup and advance to the CONCACAF Championship final, where the side kept their nerve in the shootout to bring home the first CONCACAF U-20 Championship in U.S. history.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES (CONTINUED) PLAYOFF STREAK
Sporting KC enters the 2017 season looking to become the sixth club in MLS history to make at least seven straight trips to the postseason. In addition, Manager Peter Vermes would be just the fourth coach to lead the same team to seven straight playoff appearances.
After yet another season of rampant goalscoring, forward Dom Dwyer is now within touching distance of Sporting KC legend Preki for the most goals in both MLS and in all competitions. Dwyer’s 16 goals in the 2016 regular season brought his total to 52, and 61 in all competitions. Dwyer sits just 19 MLS goals and 20 strikes in all competitions shy of Preki’s all-time records of 71 and 81, respectively.

The 26-year-old has amassed 50 goals in his last three seasons, a rate of just under 17 goals per season. Only Bradley Wright-Phillips has scored more MLS goals in that time period than Dwyer, who took home the MLS Golden Boot titles in 2014 and 2016.
Another factor that comes into play is Dwyer’s longevity. The Londoner is the only Sporting KC player to appear in at least 36 games in all competitions over the last three seasons. Player Preki Dwyer Arnaud Wolff Klein

SPORTING KC DROPS CONCESSION PRICES
VERMES VERBATIM
On Tuesday afternoon, Sporting KC announced that the club is dropping the prices of various food and beverage items at Children’s Mercy Park. Beer, soda and water all saw prices drop anywhere from $0.50 to $3.00, with most items dropping at least $1.50 at an average of 20 percent. The cost of margaritas, hotdogs, bratwursts, chips and grilled cheese sandwiches also dropped anywhere from $0.25 to $1.50 per item, with the new pricing available for the entirity of the 2017 MLS season.
On the performance against D.C. United: “Coming into someone else’s place, first game of the season, I thought we controlled the majority of the game. I thought in the second half, defensively we were stellar, we gave absolutely nothing away other than that little melee on the corner, and we defended really well, we showed a lot of spirit and fight to not give up any goals. For Tim (Melia) to make the penalty kick save was very big. There’s only one thing I might say is that we had a difficulty sometimes in the final third, it’s because at times they had a six or seven block, a line that we had to try to get through and that is not easy to do. We still created some stuff, we had some fantastic shots, Hamid made some very good saves and at the end this is a well-deserved point for us on the road.”
RUBIO REMAINS OUT WITH ACL INJURY
Sporting KC forward Diego Rubio suffered a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee during training on Oct. 14, 2016 and remains sidelined for the foreseeable future. Rubio recorded three goals and one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions in 2016 after joining Sporting KC on loan in March. The 23-year-old Chilean completed his permanent transfer from Spanish side Real Valladolid to Sporting KC in September.
On not using any substitutes: “It was very simple, I said to the guys on the bench ‘I don’t see a need to change when all of our guys were playing well,’ and you could tell that they were getting their rest at the right times to recover and get right back in. I don’t think just because you have three subs means you have to use them, I just felt the 11 guys that were out there were in a good rhythm and I didn’t want to disrupt that piece.”
In September, Rubio became the first player in club history to score in the MLS regular season, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League in the same year. He opened his 2016 scoring account in a 1-1 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 27 and notched the game-winner in extra time of a 2-1 U.S. Open Cup victory over Minnesota United FC on June 15. Rubio then tallied his first goal at Children’s Mercy Park in a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Vancouver on Sept. 13. A native of Santiago, Chile, Rubio has netted 40 goals and added 16 assists since turning professional in 2011 at age 17. After rising from the youth ranks to the senior team at hometown club Colo-Colo, Rubio moved overseas to Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he scored 22 times for Sporting B from 2011-2015. The striker made 20 first-team appearances for Sporting while also going on loan to Romanian side Pandurii Targu Jiu in 2013 and Norwegian outfit Sandnes Ulf in 2014. Rubio earned three caps for the Chile Men’s National Team in 2011 at age 18 before playing eight matches at the U-20 level from 2012-2013.

Sporting KC Game Notes | March 11, 2017 vs. FC Dallas | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager | Peter Vermes
Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.
Peter Vermes is in his ninth season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2017. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 128 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won three major trophies – the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regular-season standings in 2011 and 2012. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to six straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 103 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank eighth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions. He has coached 295 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.
He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, the Swope Park Rangers (USL) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.
Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.
After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.
Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year
In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Height: 5-10 Weight: 160 Birthday: 8/18/1986 Hometown: Longwood, Florida College: Maryland Acquired: 2009 MLS SuperDraft 2nd Round (#23) A nine-year veteran for Sporting KC, Graham Zusi has garnered MLS All-Star (2012-15), MLS Best XI (2012-13) and MLS Breakout Player of the Year (2011) accolades in addition to receiving a 2012 MLS MVP nomination. He earned Sporting KC MVP honors from 2012-14 and is the only player to appear in every All-Star Game from 2011-2014. Zusi signed a long-term Designated Player contract in 2014. He has recorded 29 goals and 60 assists in 228 appearances for Sporting KC across all competitions since being drafted in 2008 out of the University of Maryland, where he won two national championships. He is second in club history with 60 total assists, while his 410 chances created from 2011-2015 (including postseason) ranked third in MLS.
Zusi has earned 43 caps for the United States Men’s National Team since debuting in January 2012, recording five goals and six assists. He played four matches at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, tallying two assists as the U.S. advanced out of the group stage. He played in his first CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer, starting two matches, and most recently scored in a World Cup qualifier against Guatemala on March 29. He played five games for the U.S. at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, scoring on June 7 in a 4-0 win over Costa Rica.

LAMAH TO ACOSTA 21‐year‐old Kellyn Acosta opened his scoring account early this season, netting two goals in a 4‐0 win against Arabe Unido on Feb. 23. The Homegrown showed a strong connection with veteran Roland Lamah on his first goal. Acosta made a late run to the top of the area, where Lamah found him with a crisp pass that the U.S. international could strike first‐time. The th pair hooked up again, this time for a game‐winner in the 69 minute of a 2‐1 win against the Galaxy in LA on March 4. PAX DEBUT th FC Dallas’ 15 Homegrown player, Paxton Pomykal made his professional debut against Arabe Unido in the CONCACAF Champions’ League Quarterfinal on Wednesday, March 1. Paired with Maxi Urruti’s never‐stop‐running style, the two forward look could be the solution for Dallas until it’s No 10 returns midseason. FCD IS YOUNGEST TEAM IN MLS It's hard to believe, but FC Dallas got even younger during the offseason. The additions of teenage Homegrowns Reggie Cannon (18), Paxton Pomykal (17) Jesus Ferreira (16) and Bryan Reynolds (15) give FCD the youngest average age in MLS (24.31). HOMEGROWN Major League Soccer announced on Feb. 28, updates to Roster Rules for the 2017 MLS season with a focus on cultivating young talent. With a record of 50‐30‐20, Papi has the fourth‐ highest winning percentage in the first 100 games coaching a club all‐time. He was the only coach of the top four to hit 50 wins in that span, aside from Bob Bradley who had two full seasons (64 games) in the pre‐draw MLS era. NO. 19 Paxton Pomykal will be the first FC Dallas player to wear Bobby Rhine’s No. 19, since the FC Dallas legend’s untimely death in 2011. No FC Dallas player has worn No. 19 in a match since Aug. 6, 2011, when defender Zach Loyd last donned the shirt. After Rhine died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Sept. 5, 2011, Loyd honored Rhine by changing his uniform number to No. 17. Pomykal signed his contract on Sept. 8, 2016, just three days after the anniversary of Rhine’s death. “I realized 19 was open and I knew why,” said Pomykal. “It was obviously not retired, but it was in Bobby’s name. I love his legacy. He’s a legend here. Growing up, I watched him a lot because I was always at the games as a kid. FCD fans waited 19 years, 1997‐2016, to see the club hoist its second trophy. REPRESENTING THE METROPLEX FC Dallas’ current roster has seven players who grew up in the Metroplex, including Kellyn Acosta (Plano), Victor Ulloa (Wylie), Jesse Gonzalez (Dallas), Reggie Cannon (Grapevine), Jesus Ferreira (McKinney), Paxton Pomykal (Lewisville) and Bryan Reynolds (Ft.
