Sporting Kansas City remains on the road this weekend as the team heads north to take on Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field on Saturday evening. Sporting is looking to bounce back after falling 2-0 to the Colorado Rapids last Saturday and have opened the season 1-2-0, while Chicago are yet to concede a goal and are an unbeaten 1-0-2 so far in 2022. Sporting has gone 7-1-2 in the last 10 meetings with the Fire, and won the only meeting between the two sides in 2021 - claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on Sept. 11 following early goals from Jose Mauri and Johnny Russell. In their most recent visit to Soldier Field, Sporting battled to a 2-2 draw at Solider Field on Oct. 17, 2020 where Sporting twice surrendered the lead after goals from Erik Hurtado and Gadi Kinda were cancelled out by strikes from Robert Beric and a lastgasp equalizer from Djordje Mihailovic. Chicago leads the all-time regular-season series by a commanding 26-19-12 margin, with Sporting KC going 5-18-3 on the road. However, Sporting is 1-1-1 in their last three visits to Chicago, falling to a 1-0 defeat in 2016 before earning a thrilling 4-3 victory in 2018 and playing to that 2-2 draw in 2020.

He also assumed the role of interim head coach in September 2015 to close out the season.

Sporting KC Game Notes | March 19, 2022 at Chicago Fire FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES
LOOKING TO RIGHT THE SHIP IN WINDY CITY
DEBUT GALORE
While both teams have struggled to score goals so far in 2022 - two goals scored in three games apiece - Chicago has been rock solid defensively and are the only team in MLS yet to concede a goal this season. Sporting, on the other hand, has conceded five goals in their opening three games and will look to shore things up defensively in the Windy City this weekend.
Vujnovic arrived on loan from Serbian club FK Vozdovac on Tuesday, March 8 and was immediately thrust into the lineup with Daniel Salloi and Khiry Shelton out through injury. Vujnovic joined Sporting on the heels of a career season in Serbia, where he tallied 10 goals and an assist during the 2021-22 campaign in Serbia’s top division.
Sporting Kansas City hits the road for the third time in the opening four weeks when the team heads north to take on Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field on Saturday night. It’s the second of eight matches against the Eastern Conference in 2022, having already fallen to Atlanta United FC in the season opener on Feb. 27.
During Sporting Kansas City’s 2-0 defeat to the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night, a host of players made their debuts for the club. Forward Nikola Vujnovic started his debut, while defenders Kortne Ford and Ben Sweat made their Sporting debuts off the bench. In addition, defender Kayden Pierre made his first MLS appearance for the club while forward Marinos Tzionis earned his first start.
Sporting is coming into the game off their second defeat of the season, falling 2-0 to the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night. Chicago began the season with a pair of scoreless draws before finally breaking through and claiming an impressive 2-0 road win at D.C. United last Saturday. Led by 17-year-old U.S. international Gaga Slonina in goal and freshly signed Designated Player Xherdan Shaqiri, Chicago are looking to improve upon a 12th-place finish in 2021.
In the 81st minute, Ford and Sweat entered in place of Andreu Fontas and Logan Ndenbe to make their debuts for the club - marking a long road back for both players. Ford made his first MLS appearance since 2018 after battling through a lengthy knee injury the past several seasons, while Sweat made his return after missing the last 11 months with a torn ACL suffered in Colorado while with Austin FC. Homegrown right back Kayden Pierre checked into the game on the right wing in place of Johnny Russell in the 83rd minute. Pierre’s only previous appearance for Sporting’s first team was in the Leagues Cup match against Club Leon last August, where he played 75 minutes after replacing Jaylin Lindsey who suffered a season-ending hamstring injury.
Sporting’s loss to Colorado saw the Rapids extend the longest active home unbeaten streak in MLS to 18 games - one shy of the top 10 streaks in MLS history. Sporting has their fourth worst win percentage among active MLS stadiums at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (1-7-8, 0.31 WP) - however their loewst win percentage stands at this coming Saturday’s venue, Soldier Field, where Sporting is 1-7-2 all-time for a 0.20 winning percentage.
Fellow Homegrown Jake Davis also made just his second appearance for the club, playing the final nine mintues after replacing Roger Espinoza. Davis’ only previous appearance for Sporting came in stoppage time of the 4-0 win over Minnesota United last September.
DOUSING THE FIRE
Sporting Kansas City heads north to take on Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field on Saturday night for the third road game in the opening four weeks of the 2022 MLS season. Sporting trails the all-time regular-season series against the Fire 19-26-12, including a 5-18-3 mark in road matches and a rough 1-7-2 mark at Soldier Field.
VUJNOVIC THE LATEST SKC No. 9
Sporting Kansas City newcomer Nikola Vujnovic became the latest in a long line of players to start a game at center forward for Sporting since the start of the 2020 season when he made his debut in the 2-0 loss against the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park last Saturday.
Chicago played the majority of the first eight seasons of their existence at Solider Field before playing at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois from 2006 to 2019. The Fire returned to Solider Field in central Chicago ahead of the 2020 campaign.
Vujnovic was the seventh player to start a game at the No. 9 position for Sporting since the opening day of the 2020 campaign, joining Alan Pulido (26), Khiry Shelton (20), Gadi Kinda (4), Erik Hurtado (3), Gianluca Busio (2) and Wilson Harris (1).
Sporting faced off against the Fire just once in 2021, earning a comfortable 2-0 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on Sept. 11. Jose Mauri gave Sporting the lead in the fourth minute of the contest with a low shot that squirmed between the legs of Chicago goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, before Johnny Russell tapped home the second just two minutes later as Sporting cruised to all three points.
Despite training with his new teammates for just three days, the Montenegro international went the full 90 minutes on his debut, completing 11 of his 15 passes, leading the team with six aerial duels and firing his lone shot wide of the target midway through the second half.
Sporting’s most recent trip to Chicago came in an empty Soldier Field during the height of COVID protocols on Oct. 17, 2020. Erik Hurtado gave Sporting a first-half lead before VAR handed Chicago an equalizer through Robert Beric on the stroke of halftime. Gadi Kinda headed Sporting into a late lead before Djordje Mihailovic tapped into an empty net with the final kick of the game to salvage a 2-2 draw for the hosts.
ZUSI POISED TO BECOME ALL-TIME MINUTES LEADER
Sporting Kansas City veteran Graham Zusi is poised to become the club’s all-time minutes leader in MLS regular-season action. With 25,474 minutes played, Zusi trails Sporting icon Matt Besler by just 27 minutes for first in the club’s all-time charts and will take his place in the history books in the 28th minute of Saturday’s match against Chicago Fire FC, should he start.
While Sporting trails the all-time regular-season series 19-26-12, Sporting has gone 7-1-2 in their last 10 meetings with Chicago dating back to midway through the 2014 campaign. However, only three of those 10 matches have taken place in Chicago where Sporting has gone 1-1-1 in their last three visits.
Zusi is the first player in MLS history to play 14 seasons all with one club. His 323 career regular season appearances are fifth most in MLS history by a player for one club and the most of any active player. Zusi only trails Chris Wondolowski (SJ - 376), Nick Rimando (RSL - 369), Kyle Beckerman (RSL - 350) and Jaime Moreno (DC - 329).
KEY PLAYERS OUT
Sporting Kansas City is dealing with an early-season injury bug as the team comes out of Week 3 with injury concerns to several key players. To start, Sporting opened the season without Designated Players Alan Pulido - due to be out for the season - and Gadi Kinda who both underwent offseason knee surgery.

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes...
To add to those monumental absences, holding midfielder Uri Rosell went down with a hamstring injury in the season opener at Atlanta United FC, before 2021 MLS MVP finalist Daniel Salloi and starting center forward Khiry Shelton both missed the loss at Colorado last Saturday through injury. Homegrown midfielder Felipe Hernandez exited that match in the 28th minute with a shoulder injury as well.
Thoughts on the match: “It’s hard to talk about each individual goal - just difficult to talk about the two of them. I just don’t think that we were good enough to win tonight. I think they were better. We were disconnected and we just didn’t have a good night. There were just too many people on the field that are just kind of getting indoctrinated to us, to the league, to everything. It’s too many new guys. Normally I wouldn’t do this, but I don’t have any choices at the moment so it’s kind of how we’re dealing with it. It’s okay. The guys gave a good effort. They tried. We just have to keep working. That’s where we are. We have to work and that’s what you have to do. You have to keep finding a way.”
It continues a trend where Sporting has rarely had their most dangerous attacking players available at the same time over the past few seasons. Since the start of 2020, Sporting Kansas City will have started Salloi along with DP trio Kinda, Pulido and Johnny Russell in just four of 89 regular season games. In the same timeframe, Sporting will have started Salloi, Pulido and Russell in only seven of 89 regular season games.
On the play of Tzionis and Vujnovic: “It’s hard. It’s not a good opportunity for them to play in the group this way. You put people into games to try to have success. To do that, they need to spend a little time with the team. They need to see the League a little bit. All those things those guys aren’t getting because of the situation we’re in, but we’re going to have to fight through it. They’re going to have to figure it out. We’ll have to keep working. That’s really what it comes down to.”
With players out, it means opportunities for several newcomers and youngsters. Marinos Tzionis and Nikola Vujnovic replaced Salloi and Shelton on Saturday and will look to keep building on a promising performance in Colorado. Cam Duke produced one of the best performances on the field when he replaced Hernandez for the final 62 minutes at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and will hope to maintain that form consistently.

Sporting KC Game Notes | March 19, 2022 at Chicago Fire FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes
Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.
Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 206 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 173 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.
He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.
On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 478 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.
On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.
With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 51 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the sixth longest active run.
Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.
Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

Sporting Kansas City signed French center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin ahead of the 2021 MLS season. Isimat has played over 250 professional matches since 2010, featuring in the top divisions of France, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has logged 93 appearances each in France’s Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won three league titles as an integral member of PSV Eindhoven. Born in the Paris suburb of Meudon, Isimat competed in the famous Clairefontaine youth academy from 2004-2007 before continuing his development at Rennes and Valenciennes. He began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 and spent the next three seasons as a regular starter for Valenciennes. Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.
In 2014, Isimat was loaned from Monaco to PSV Eindhoven. In his first Eredivisie season, he helped PSV win the league title by a 17-point margin, leading to PSV acquiring the defender on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts. Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.
