FC DALLAS vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY TOYOTA STADIUM, Frisco, Texas March 14, 2015 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #12) 7:30 p.m. CT (KTXA-CBS21; KMCI-38) A key matchup in the Western Conference is ahead in just the second week of the campaign as FC Dallas play host to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium. FC Dallas started off their new season on the right foot, getting a late goal for a 1-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday evening in Frisco. Sporting have moved to the West this season, but started off their year with a 1-1 home draw against the New York Red Bulls. REFEREE: Jair Marrufo. FC Dallas has not defeated Sporting at home since 2010, when they 1-0 in Frisco.  The teams are back in the same conference for the first time since 2004. They met in the Western Conference Semifinals all the way back in 1996, the first playoff series for both clubs.  Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. DAL: P8 W3 L3 D2 … Oscar Pareja vs. KC: P3 W0 L1 D2 FC DALLAS FC Dallas got the new season started off on the right foot in dramatic fashion, getting a goal in stoppage time for a 1-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening at Toyota Stadium. FC Dallas is atop the Western Conference, one of four teams with maximum points after one match. LAST MATCH  The game's only goal came two minutes into second-half stoppage time. Moises Hernandez flighted a ball into the center of the box where Blas Perez was able to flick a header past Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham for the dramatic match-winner.  FCD goalkeeper Chris Seitz made two saves in keeping the clean sheet in the season opener.  Fabian Castillo started up top alongside Blas Perez for Oscar Pareja’s side in the season opener. Mauro Diaz filled the playmaking midfield role, while nominal winger Atiba Harris slotted in at left back.  FC DALLAS (4-1-3-2): Chris Seitz - Moises Hernandez, Matt Hedges, Zach Loyd, Atiba Harris (Walker Zimmerman 89) - Victor Ulloa - Ryan Hollingshead (Michael Barrios 75), Mauro Diaz (Michel 86), Tesho Akindele - Fabian Castillo, Blas Perez. TEAM NEWS  For a second consecutive season, the two years in charge for FCD head coach Oscar Pareja, the club opened the season with a victory. In 2014, FC Dallas were unbeaten in their first five games (4-0-1).  FC Dallas striker Blas Perez picked up where he left off, scoring the game-winning goal in stoppage time. Perez scored five goals in the final seven games of the season last year for FCD.  “I’m very glad for Blas, who embraces and is an example of our culture as a team,” Pareja said. “I think he’s showing it, and the game rewards him. He’s a good example for me at what we’re doing. What we’re doing now is not teaching them, but helping to them to learn, which is very different. And Blas is leading that.”  Said FC Dallas midfielder Tesho Akindele: “I think it shows that we never give up. I always felt like we were going to score the whole time. I felt that we were going to score a goal and we did. I think it’s just a huge testament to our team and the kind of mentality that Oscar [Pareja] has put into us.”  Fabian Castillo was slotted alongside Perez in attack, as Pareja ran out his team in a 4-4-2 scheme. Tesho Akindele, the 2014 MLS Rookie of the Year, filled the wide left midfield slot.

“We created some options but not as many as in the second half when the team was eager to move up front and create more spaces where Victor [Ulloa] and Mauro [Diaz ]were more involved. Tesho, Fabian, Ryan and Blas started creating some movements, which made [San Jose’s] defenders uncomfortable. That way we played in their half in the second half and that gave us the best chances,” said Pareja. Atiba Harris, who has featured primarily in a wide attacking role over his nine-year MLS career, made his return to FC Dallas playing on the right side of the back four. “As a defender you always need to have pride and try to get a shutout. This year, it helps that we can continue building on last season. We have the same back four plus Atiba (Harris) so we have a little continuity there. It definitely helps to have that carry over from the year before,” said Zach Loyd. “Atiba has slid in really well. He hasn’t missed a beat over there on the right side.” New acquisition Michael Barrios started the match on the substitutes’ bench, coming on for the final quarterhour in place of preseason goals leader Ryan Hollingshead. “He played well, especially for his first match. I’m sure there were some nerves on his part but he looked calm,” said Akindele. “He sent in a couple good crosses. He created chances for us and that is all you can ask for. He set up a few things and that is something you definitely need. He looks like he can set up a play as well as he can finish them.” A year ago, FC Dallas scored 13 goals in the final quarter-hour (plus stoppage time), tied for fifth-most in MLS. “This has been the best experience I have had in my life in soccer- coaching this group,” Pareja said. "The way they battle every day and what happened today – I’d rather have scored in the first half, but this is what they are. They are fighters and they are winners. They are players that are going to fight for this franchise.” Said midfielder Michel: “The team that plays hard and keeps trying to score a goal deserves the win. It is so crazy when you score a goal in the last minute in these kinds of games. We have to keep playing this wayplaying hard and working hard.” While veteran Dan Kennedy was obtained in the dispersal draft from Chivas USA during the offseason, Chris Seitz was given the start in goal and made two saves in keeping the clean sheet. “Seitz has first taken his game to a different level of responsibility with his body and responsibility with the way he approaches training,” Pareja said. “I know he feels now that he’s really fighting for a spot in the starting lineup for real.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City opened their new season with a draw, reaching a 1-1 result with the New York Red Bulls on Sunday afternoon at Sporting Park. Sporting are in a tie for fifth place in the Western Conference with 1 point from 1 match. LAST MATCH  Sporting took the lead in the 50th minute. Benny Feilhaber took the ball into the right corner, worked free of a Red Bulls defender and sent in a cross that center back Ike Opara raced to head in unmarked for the 1-0 lead.  The advantage stood only until the 54th minute, when Lloyd Sam took a pass from Felipe Martins through the midfield and curled a blast from 22 yards past diving 'keeper Luis Marin and inside the right post.  Sporting had to play a man down after the 70th minute, when center back and captain Matt Besler was given his second yellow card for a reckless foul on forward Bradley Wright-Phillips.  SKC manager Peter Vermes ran out Krisztian Nemeth in the playmaking midfield role in the season opener, underneath lone striker Dom Dwyer. Luis Marin made his MLS debut in goal, and Amadou Dia was given the start at right back.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Luis Marin - Amadou Dia, Ike Opara, Matt Besler (sent off 70), Seth Sinovic - Roger Espinoza, Benny Feilhaber - Graham Zusi (Erik Palmer-Brown 85), Krisztian Nemeth (Jacob Peterson 77), Bernardo Anor (Paulo Nagamura 61) - Dom Dwyer. TEAM NEWS  It was the third consecutive match Sporting had played against the New York Red Bulls – the first they did not lose. The Red Bulls ended the regular season with a 2-0 win at Sporting Park, then ended SKC’s season with a 2-1 win in the Knockout Round match in the MLS Cup Playoffs at Red Bull Arena.  “You´re playing your first game of the season,” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “Very rarely is everybody 90 minutes fit, let alone able to play 10 men for 90-plus minutes. It showed a lot of determination and courage from the guys to be able to fight the way they did. What they did really well was they were actually smart. They were really disciplined defensively but they picked and chose some really good moments.  Ike Opara made his first appearance in a league match in nearly a year – since last March 29, when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Opara scored his eighth career league goal, his first since Oct. 5, 2013, his first season with Sporting.  “Ike has a tendency, especially off of set pieces, and that is where that started. It started off of a set piece and we got the rebound. Somebody opened it up wide and the service was fantastic. Great ball in and obviously a great finish for him,” said Vermes.

Said Benny Feilhaber: “It was big time for him. It was incredible for him to make this recovery, be able to play 90 minutes in his first game of the year and get a goal for us. We know how strong he is in the air, so if you put it anywhere close to him, he’s probably going to get one.” There will be a change in central defense for the FCD match after Matt Besler committed a second bookable offense in the final 20 minutes. Rookie Amadou Dia was given the start at right back, as Chance Myers continues to rehabilitate an Achilles tendon injury which ended his season last May. “He can step out there and he can play at this level for sure. He is playing out of position. He is really a left back, not a right back, so I give him a really high mark in regards to the way he played,” said Vermes. “Never got out of shape, made some very good individual plays, recovered really well. He was very good.” Krisztian Nemeth began the game in the underneath role behind Dom Dwyer, but moved into more of a partnership role up top as the match progressed. New acquisition Marcel de Jong was not available for the season opener. “Marcel was actually available to play today and so was [Soni] Mustivar, but neither guy has been here long enough. They need to get some rhythm at training before they become guys that are considered for the starting lineup or the A team,” Vermes said.

FC DALLAS INJURY REPORT OUT: COY CRAFT (RECOVERING FROM LEFT SHOULDER SURGERY), STEPHEN KEEL (RECOVERING FROM RIGHT FOOT SURGERY). ROLLING FC Dallas striker Blas Perez picked up where he left off, scoring the game‐ winning goal in stoppage time to lead his club to a dramatic 1‐0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on March 7. Perez scored five goals in the final seven games of the 2014 season. EQUALS FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City have played to draws each of the last two seasons, including a 1‐1 result last year at Sporting Park. The teams are back in the same conference for the first time since 2004. They met in the Western Conference semifinals all the way back in 1996, the first playoff series for both clubs. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER nd Blas Perez’s 92 minute game‐winning goal was the first stoppage time game th winner at Toyota Stadium since Julian De Guzman’s 96 minute goal against Vancouver on Sept. 15, 2012. It was the seventh stoppage‐time game winner for FC Dallas in Toyota Stadium history. SHUTOUTS Despite a franchise‐record eight game win streak at Toyota Stadium last season, FC Dallas shut out only one opponent at home in 2014. The home th shutout did not occur until the 20 game of the season. This season, FC Dallas shut out the San Jose Earthquakes on opening day, equaling the total number of shutouts at Toyota Stadium in 2014. FC Dallas goalkeepers fared much better on the road in 2014. Chris Seitz recorded clean sheets in Salt Lake (5/24) and Columbus (6/29), while Raul Fernandez surrendered zero goals against Chivas USA (8/3), San Jose (8/16) and Colorado (10/18). ONE OF DALLAS’ BEST EVER: BLAS PEREZ Dallas’ leading scorer the past three seasons, Blas Perez equaled his MLS‐ high last season with 11 goals in 29 appearances. He also (6) surpassed his previous MLS‐high for assists in a season (4 in 2012). Ranks fourth all‐time in FCD history with 32 goals. rd • Will tie Jeff Cunningham for third all‐time with his next goal (33 ). Ranks second all‐time in FCD history in scoring percentage: • Blas Perez (31G on 164 shots = 18.9%) • Jeff Cunningham ranks first (33G on 153 shots = 21.6%) Ranks sixth all‐time in FCD history with four multi‐goal games. • Jason Kreis ranks first with 10. FRANCHISE TAG Only 22 years old, Fabian Castillo has already played 108 matches for FCD. Considered one of the fastest players in MLS, Castillo signed a new contract with FC Dallas on Feb. 10 which runs through the 2019 season.  He ranks sixth in FCD history in shots (183), four behind Oscar Pareja. th  Castillo ranks 10 all‐time in FCD history with 75 shots on goal.  Is seventh all‐time in FCD history with eight game‐winning goals. th  Is tied for 10 all‐time in game‐winning assists (6) with Chad Deering.

TESHO AKINDELE IN THE RECORD BOOK MLS’s 2014 Rookie of the Year Tesho Aknidele became the youngest player to score a playoff goal in franchise history when he tucked away a shot in the th 40 minute of Dallas’ 2‐1 victory on Oct. 29, 2014. Akindele’s (22 years, 212 days) goal came 128 days earlier than Eric Avila’s (22 years, 340 days) historic strike against RSL helped send Dallas to the Western Conf. Final in 2010.  Akindele is the youngest player in team history to record a hat trick. • His hat‐trick came in Dallas’ last match against San Jose (Aug. 16, 2014). • It was scored in the 16 match of his career. It took Jeff Cunningham 66 matches in an FC Dallas kit to record his first hat‐trick. Dante Washington needed 85 matches. Bobby Rhine required 212 and Jason Kreis took 247.  He finished 2014 ranked third (1748) in minutes played by a rookie.  Also claimed the goal‐scoring title for an FC Dallas rookie with seven.  Since making his first professional start in a 2‐1 loss to San Jose on May 10, Tesho Akindele has appeared in 31 matches in a row (all competitions). BACKSTOP Chris Seitz also inked a new contract with Dallas this offseason. He posted the club’s best post‐season goals against average of 0.50 in two MLS Cup Playoff matches last season.  Seitz’s winning percentage last season was .607, which ties him with Matt Jordan (1999) for the second‐best percentage in club history behind Kevin Hartman’s .737, which was recorded during the 2010 season. STALWART UNC product Zach Loyd is the longest‐tenured player on the FC Dallas roster. He has appeared in 141 matches for Dallas since 2010 April 10, 2010. Loyd started 131 of those matches and has logged 11,517 minutes, which ranks eighth all‐time.  He appeared in 32 consecutive matches in 2014 (across all competitions). SNIPER Michel ranks fourth all‐time in FC Dallas history, having served 167 corner kicks in the past two seasons. The Brazilian can pass Chad Deering (203) for third all‐time this season despite playing only 56 matches for Dallas compared to Deering’s (147).  Michel is tied for third all‐time in penalty kick goals with six (reg. season). • Jason Kreis (6), Jorge Rodriguez (7) and Kenny Cooper (9) have scored the most penalty kicks in FC Dallas history. • Michel has converted all eight PK attempts he has taken in MLS (two PK goals in MLS Cup Playoffs). THE FUTURE Victor Ulloa’s career was saved when his former academy head coach and current FC Dallas head coach, Oscar Pareja returned to Big D. Ulloa had played only nine minutes in MLS in three years before 2014. Last season, Pareja leaned on Ulloa heavily in Dallas’ central midfield – starting the now 23‐year‐old in 33 consecutive matches across all competitions. Ulloa finished the regular season with 2,365 minutes under his belt. He also played 256 minutes in Dallas’ three MLS Cup Playoff matches. Sporting KC Game Notes | March 14, 2015 at FC Dallas | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES SPORTING KC HEADS SOUTH TO FACE FC DALLAS

THREE MORE MATCHES IN MARCH

Now a member of the West, Sporting KC will play its first intra-conference match of 2015 against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. Peter Vermes’ men have picked up four points in their previous two trips to Dallas, winning 4-1 in June 2011 and drawing 2-2 in June 2013. However, Oscar Pareja guided FC Dallas to a league-best 12 home wins in 2014 as the club made its first postseason appearance since 2011. In their home opener at Toyota Stadium last Saturday, Blas Perez scored a 92nd-minute goal to give FC Dallas a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes.

Sporting KC opens the 2015 regular season with four games in the month of March. Following a 1-1 home draw against the Red Bulls and a road trip to FC Dallas, the club will return to Sporting Park on March 21 to face the Portland Timbers. Sporting KC earned a 1-0 road win at Portland last season, but the Timbers have been victorious in each of their last two trips to Kansas City. Caleb Porter’s team left Sporting Park with a 3-2 win in April 2013 en route to finishing atop the Western Conference regular season standings. Last June, Portland eliminated Sporting KC from the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 3-1 triumph in the round of 16.

WINNING IN THE WEST Sporting KC rejoins the Western Conference in 2015 as part of conference realignment for Major League Soccer’s 20th season. With expansion clubs Orlando City SC and New York City SC joining the Eastern Conference, Sporting KC moves west after playing each of the last 10 seasons in the East.

Sporting KC ends the month with their inaugural meeting against expansion side New York City FC on March 28. This will also be Sporting KC’s first ever match played at Yankee Stadium, and just the second MLS regular season game held at the historic venue—following NYCFC’s home opener on Sunday against New England.

Sporting KC recorded 21 wins against Western Conference opponents from 20112014 (21-12-12 overall), more than any other Eastern Conference team, including a 5-2-2 mark last year. The club played their first nine seasons (1996-2004) in the Western Conference and reached the postseason on seven occasions. 1999 was the last time Sporting KC failed to qualify for the playoffs as a member of the West.

OPARA EARNS TEAM OF THE WEEK HONORS Ike Opara made up for lost time in last Sunday’s season opener at Sporting Park. After missing most of the 2014 campaign through injury, the centerback scored Sporting Kansas City’s only goal in the 50th minute of a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls. He also recorded game-highs with seven interceptions, 11 duels won, and limited opposing striker Bradley Wright-Phillips to just 24 touches and zero shots on goal. Opara’s performance didn’t go unnoticed, as he earned Team of the Week recognition from MLSsoccer.com, Bleacher Report, Goal.com and NBC Pro Soccer Talk in his first league game since last March.

Thirteen of the past 15 MLS Cup champions are competing in the Western Conference in 2015. Among the 10 teams, five reside in the Pacific Time Zone, three in the Central Time Zone and two in the Mountain Time Zone. For the 2015 campaign, the 20 teams will each play 34 games during the regular season. Clubs will play each team in the opposing conference once for five home and five away matches. Clubs will play each of their nine conference opponents at least twice (one home, one away), plus six additional intra-conference games -three home and three away -- for a total of 24 intra-conference matches.

Benny Feilhaber, who assisted Opara’s goal with a cross from the right wing, also landed a spot on NBC Pro Soccer Talk’s Team of the Week. The veteran led all players with five fouls won and showcased his versatility on the pitch—moving from deeplying to attacking midfielder before joining Opara in central defense for 15 minutes late in the second half. He was also the only player in MLS Week 1 to create two big scoring chances. In addition, Bleacher Report reserved a spot on its Team of the Week bench for Amadou Dia. The 21-year-old defender became the first rookie to start in a Sporting KC season opener since 2011 and recorded seven interceptions, tied with Opara for third most among MLS players in Week 1.

SEASON-OPENING STALEMATE AGAINST NEW YORK Sporting KC opened the 2015 MLS season last Sunday with a 1-1 draw against the New York Red Bulls at Sporting Park. Ike Opara, who missed most of 2014 after suffering a season-ending ankle injury last March, scored on his return before Lloyd Sam equalized four minutes later to split the points in the lone meeting between the two sides this regular season.

OFFSEASON OVERHAUL A roster makeover during the offseason saw Sporting KC acquire 13 new players and part ways with 15 members from last year’s squad. While retaining its veteran core – Matt Besler, Graham Zusi, Dom Dwyer, Seth Sinovic and Chance Myers – the club made multiple signings at each position.

Manager Peter Vermes went with first round SuperDraft pick Amadou Dia to make his professional debut at right back, while also inserting newcomers Bernardo Anor, Krisztian Nemeth and Luis Marin into his opening match lineup. Sporting KC was further bolstered by the return of World Cup veteran Roger Espinoza, making the 100th start of his MLS career (including postseason), after being re-acquired in the offseason from Wigan Athletic.

New goalkeepers (2): Luis Marin (31), a Chilean international (eight caps) with 12 years of professional experience in his native country and Sporting KC’s current holder of the No. 1 jersey; Tim Melia (28), a sixth-year MLS veteran who was a League Pool Goalkeeper in 2014 and received a call-up from Sporting KC last summer.

Opara broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with his first goal in more than 17 months, getting on the end of Benny Feilhaber’s pinpoint cross from the right wing. Opara met the ball inside the six-yard box and headed past Luis Robles for his seventh career MLS goal. It marked the second straight year in which Sporting KC’s first goal of the regular season was scored by a defender after having never happened in the team’s first 18 seasons.

New defenders (4): Jalil Anibaba (26), a versatile veteran who has started more than 100 MLS matches over four years with Chicago and Seattle; Saad Abdul-Salaam (23), a right back out of Akron selected 12th overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft; Amadou Dia (22), a left back out of Clemson selected 20th overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft; Marcel de Jong (28), a Canadian international (31 caps) who has played each of the last four years at FC Augsburg of the German Bundesliga.

The Red Bulls wasted no time in pulling level on an individual effort from Sam. The Englishman dribbled toward the top of the penalty arc and cut back before curling a shot inside the post from 22 yards out. Sporting KC was reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute when captain Matt Besler was sent off upon receiving his second caution of the match for a tackle on Bradley Wright-Phillips near midfield.

New midfielders (3): Roger Espinoza (28), a Honduran international (45 caps) and MLS All-Star who played in Kansas City from 2008-2012 before joining Wigan Athletic in England; Servando Carrasco (26), an MLS veteran who played 60 games over four years with Seattle and Houston; Soni Mustivar (25), a Haiti international who has played each of the last three seasons with Petrolul Ploiesti in the Romanian first division.

SPORTING PARK SELLOUT STREAK Sporting Park has sold out 54 consecutive MLS matches (including playoffs) dating back to March 2012 and 66 of 75 overall since opening in June 2011. Sporting KC has set new regular season attendance records in each of the last four years, eclipsing 20,00 specators per game in 2014.

New forwards (4): Bernardo Anor (26), a fifth-year veteran who played 72 MLS matches and scored 12 goals in Columbus; Krisztian Nemeth (26), a Hungarian international (15 caps) with nearly 10 years of professional experience across Europe; Connor Hallisey (23), a winger out of California selected 10th overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft; James Ansu Rogers (22), a winger out of New Mexico selected 53rd overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

In 75 MLS matches played at the venue, Sporting Park is averaging 19,336 spectators -- 104.7 percent of its 18,467-seat capacity. Sporting KC’s average home attendance in 2014 was at 108.7 percent capacity, the best mark in MLS.

Sporting KC Game Notes | March 14, 2015 at FC Dallas | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES (CONTINUED) SUCCESS IN KANSAS CITY

PRESEASON PREPARATION IN TUCSON

Sporting KC enters their 20th season as one of nine active charter members in Major League Soccer. Led by seventh-year Manager Peter Vermes, Sporting KC is the only club to win an MLS Cup (2013), a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (2012) and multiple conference regular season titles (2011, 2012) over the past nine seasons. Since 2011, Vermes has guided the team to four straight postseason appearances and 67 MLS victories (including playoffs), third most in the league. During that time, Sporting KC has recorded a league-best 29 road wins.

Sporting KC prepared for its first season in the Western Conference since 2004 by playing four opponents from the West during the preseason. The club held two training camps in Tucson, Arizona (Jan. 25 - Feb. 10 and Feb. 15 - March 1), highlighted by two preseason competitions: the 2015 Desert Friendlies and the 2015 Desert Diamond Cup.

Vermes fielded 35 players over the course of seven preseason matches as the team logged a 3-2-2 record. Sporting KC recorded 12 goals and 10 assists, with nine goals (Krisztian Nemeth 5, Bernardo Anor 2, James Ansu Rogers 1, Connor Hallisey 1) and four assists (Anor 1, Ansu Rogers 1, Nemeth 1, Amadou Dia 1) coming from players who joined the club this offseason.

In addition to winning championships, the club has seen many of its current players earn individual accolades. Winger Graham Zusi was named MLS Breakout Player of the Year in 2011, while captain Matt Besler received MLS Defender of the Year recognition in 2012. A pair of three-time MLS All-Stars, Zusi (28 caps) and Besler (25 caps) are veterans of the United States Men’s National Team and signed Designated Player contracts with Sporting KC last July after competing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

• • • •

Last year, Dwyer scored 22 MLS goals and 24 goals in all competitions to set new single-season records for the club. The 24-year-old has scored 50 goals in all competitions since the start of 2013—28 with Sporting KC and 22 with former USL PRO affiliate Orlando City SC. Now entering his fourth year in Kansas City, Dwyer signed a contract extension during this offseason. Sporting KC also welcomes back Honduran international midfielder Roger Espinoza, who played five seasons for the team from 2008-2012. After becoming an MLS All-Star in 2012, Espinoza moved to Wigan Athletic where he won the 2013 FA Cup title and made 57 total appearances across the English Premier League, English Championship, UEFA Europa League and domestic cups. He is the only active MLS player to have competed in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Bernardo Anor joined Sporting KC from Columbus Crew SC in December 2014 to become the club’s first offseason acquisition. The 26-year-old native of Venezuela appeared in 72 matches over four seasons with Columbus, scoring 12 goals and adding three game-winning assists since being drafted out of the University of South Florida in 2011. He made his Sporting KC debut with a start at Sporting Park on March 8. Anor played 13 MLS matches as a rookie and 11 games in 2012 before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. He returned in 2013 to make 19 MLS starts and earn the club’s Comeback Player of the Year award. He netted a career-high six goals in 2014, helping Columbus earn a postseason berth for the first time since 2011. Anor was South Florida’s top scorer for three seasons during his collegiate career (2007-2010) in which he recorded 21 goals and seven assists. His younger brother, Juan Pablo, plays professionally for Malaga CF in Spain’s La Liga, and his father, Bernardo, represented Venezuela at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Sporting KC selected rookie midfielder James Ansu Rogers with the 53rd overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. The third round draft selection was a member of the United States Under-20 Men’s National Team in 2012 after first representing the U.S. at the under-15 level in 2007. A native of Sierra Leone, Ansu Rogers moved to the U.S. at age 11 and competed for the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake academies prior to being recruited to the University of New Mexico. Now in his fourth season at Sporting KC, Dom Dwyer is coming off a breakout 2014 campaign in which he garnered Sporting KC Offensive Player of the Year and co-MVP honors. The Englishman set a single season club record with 22 goals, second most in MLS, and his 24 career goals in the regular season now rank ninth in team history. Dwyer, who was named an MLS All-Star in 2014 for the first time in his career, has scored 50 goals in all competitions since the beginning of 2013—28 for Sporting KC and 22 for former USL PRO affiliate Orlando City SC. His 0.62 goals per 90 minutes in MLS rank first in team history. He signed a contract extension with the club ahead of the 2015 campaign. After making three appearances across all competitions during his rookie season, he notched 15 goals in 13 regular season games while on loan with Orlando City SC in 2013 to set USL PRO’s single-season scoring record at the time. He added four goals in the USL PRO final to earn championship MVP honors.

Sporting KC’s second Homegrown Player in club history, defender Kevin Ellis is coming off a 2014 campaign in which he made a career-high 21 appearances and 17 starts in MLS (including his playoff debut). He finished 2014 with three assists in league play, tied for third most in the team, while splitting time between the right back and centerback positions. Now in his fifth season with the club, Ellis developed in the Sporting KC Academy while attending Oak Park High School before playing collegiately at Barton County Community College in 2009-10. He scored his first competitive goal for the club last March, sparking a 1-0 win over Cruz Azul (Mexico) in the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg at Sporting Park.

He is the second coach to lead Sporting KC to four straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team.

Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include: scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster and the Sporting KC Juniors program. Vermes, an original member of Major League Soccer, retired from the League in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States National Team. He recorded one assist for the Red, White and Blue. The U.S. team went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin appeared. Zavagnin married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It marked the first time the United States had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, appearing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 184 MLS matches and playing more than 16,000 minutes. He was nominated on the players’ ballot for the National Soccer Hall of Fame from 2007-2012. In 2013, Vermes became eligible for the veteran ballot and on October 11, 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005. In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Fitness Coach | Mateus Manoel Mateus Manoel is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City as Head Fitness Coach. His responsibilities cover all aspects of sport performance and science for the team, including strength and conditioning, injury prevention, field practices, nutrition, fitness monitoring (training load and readiness), player re-adaptation following rehab and recovery.

Assistant Coach | John Pascarella Assistant Coach John Pascarella played professionally for nine seasons before beginning his coaching career in 1998 at the University of Maryland. Pascarella played club soccer with Sporting Kansas City Technical Director Peter Vermes. His playing experience took him to Peru before he returned to the United States to play in the A-League and MLS.

In the summer of 2010, Manoel was an Assistant Fitness Coach for the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He had formerly served as the Head Fitness Coach for the Mexican Men’s National Team in 2009, working with renowned coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. During 2007 and 2008, Manoel held a position with Athletes’ Performance in the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, where he worked with professional athletes from a variety of sports, including NFL, NHL, MLB, and MLS (Chivas USA and LA Galaxy). Previously, he had assisted with strength and conditioning for D.C. United from the MLS, while concurrently holding the position of Sports Performance Director with Velocity Sports Performance in Alexandria, Virginia.

Once his playing career was over, Pascarella began coaching as a member of Sasho Cirovski’s staff at Maryland. He then went on to work in Northern Virginia youth soccer circles as a high school coach and Olympic Development Program coach before becoming the Head Coach and Technical Director of the Northern Virginia Royals of the USL’s Premier Development League for two seasons. Pascarella joined Kansas City’s technical staff in 2009 and was a goalkeeper and fitness coach until 2011, when he became an assistant.

Manoel holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from George Washington University, where he was also responsible for the strength and conditioning needs of the Colonials Men’s Varsity Soccer Team. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland - College Park and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Manoel was born in Brazil and is fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish.
