NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY GILLETTE STADIUM, Foxborough, Mass. March 23, 2013 (WEEK 4, MLS Game #28) 4 p.m. ET (CSN-NE; KSMO) The New England Revolution make their Gillette Stadium debut for 2013 when they play host to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday afternoon. The Revolution are looking to return to the win column, coming off a 1-0 loss at Philadelphia Union last weekend. Sporting are also looking to get back to their winning ways after opening the season with a victory, their last result a scoreless draw with the Chicago Fire in their home opener. KC won 1-0 on Aug. 4 in the lone meeting at Gillette Stadium.  Sporting have a 322-minute shutout streak alive vs. the Revolution, their last goal conceded in the series coming July 30, 2011.  New England haven’t won in Kansas City since 2008. KC has four wins in their last six home matches with New England, with two draws.  Coaches record: Jay Heaps vs. KC: P3 W0 L2 D1 … Peter Vermes vs. NE: P8 W4 L2 D2 NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION The New England Revolution suffered their first loss of the new season, dropping a 1-0 decision to Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at PPL Park. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came after 75 minutes. The initial header by Jack McInerney from a Sebastien Le Toux corner kick was saved by Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth, but McInerney pounced on the rebound and put into the back of the net.  Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath was credited with two saves in his first clean sheet of the season.  Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made two changes to the team that defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 at Toyota Park. Scott Caldwell and Kelyn Rowe both came into the midfield, in place of Kalifa Cisse and Donnie Smith.  NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (4-2-3-1): Bobby Shuttleworth - Andrew Farrell, Jose Goncalves, A.J. Soares, Kevin Alston (Chris Tierney 79) - Clyde Simms (Andy Dorman 46), Scott Caldwell - Kelyn Rowe, Juan Toja (Chad Barrett 79), Lee Nguyen - Jerry Bengtson. TEAM NEWS  With the loss in Chicago, it meant that the Revolution still have not opened a season with back-to-back wins in their 18-year history.  “Unfortunately we put a lot of hard work into going on the road and being solid and getting to halftime 0-0 and making sure we come out and have an opportunity to win game or at least come out of here with what we thought was a fair result,” said Revolution head coach Jay Heaps. “That is where we lost it, inside. It was a set piece goal and we don’t want to give those up.”

After becoming the third player in league history to play in 16 different seasons, goalkeeper Matt Reis was unable to post for the Philadelphia match, suffering from a knee injury. Bobby Shuttleworth made his season debut between the posts. Midfielder Kalifa Cissé was also kept out of the lineup because of a groin injury. “It was precautionary,” Heaps said. “Some of the knocks they took in the Chicago game just didn't heal quickly enough. It's more precautionary. Both of them could have played if we had to [play them], but we didn't want to lose them for a longer period of time.” Andy Dorman came on as a halftime substitute, his first appearance in MLS and for the Revolution since the 2007 season. “I think Dorman and Scottie [Caldwell] both making their debuts did a nice job,” said Heaps. “Dorman’s got experience and it shows. Scottie obviously is a methodical player and thinks about the game and that shows. He took very good spots and played very good balls.” Dorman replaced midfielder Clyde Simms. “It was a little bit of an issue with his muscle,” Heaps said. “It was a little bit precautionary because it was such a heavy field. We wanted to make sure that it wasn't a long-term issue.” The Revolution will also be forced into another change with striker Jerry Bengtson away on international duty with Honduras. “I am very happy every time I am called up. It’s very nice," Bengtson said. "I’m thrilled to be there with my teammates. I think it's a big thrill to every player who is called up, it’s very nice.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City weren’t able to make their home debut a victorious one, settling for a scoreless draw with the Chicago Fire on Saturday afternoon at Sporting Park. LAST MATCH  Sporting put 20 attempts toward goal, only three of which were on frame, and all of those straight at Fire 'keeper Sean Johnson.  The Fire nearly stole all three points in second-half stoppage time, when Dan Paladini broke in alone on goal. But Sporting 'keeper Jimmy Nielsen made the save, his only one of the match.  Sporting manager Peter Vermes made two changes to the team that dropped a 2-1 decision to Toronto FC at Rogers Centre. Mechack Jerome made his first start at right back, in place of Chance Myers, and C.J. Sapong started in a wide spot in place of Bobby Convey.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Mechack Jerome, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Oriol Rosell - Benny Feilhaber (Soony Saad 77), Paulo Nagamura - C.J. Sapong, Claudio Bieler, Graham Zusi. TEAM NEWS  While Sporting were able to keep a clean sheet for the first time this season, they were also kept off the scoreboard for the first time this year. Sporting had 15 defensive shutouts last year, two shy of the all-time MLS single-season record.  “When you have 75 percent possession throughout the course of the game and we were going with speed at times when we had to, there’s nothing you can do when a team drops nine guys within a 24-yard space,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “It’s always going to be difficult to hit the back of the net but I thought that we at times were very dangerous around the goal and we didn’t give anything away until probably the 88th minute and that’s only because we were still going and they were trying to take one off the counter.”  C.J. Sapong made his first start of the season after recording an assist against Toronto FC in a second substitute appearance. Sapong started on the right side of the Sporting attack, with Graham Zusi shifting to the left flank.  “He’s a good matchup to Gonzalo Segares. We weren’t sure who they were going to put on the right, whether it was going to be Thompson or Videira,” said Vermes. “So to start out we thought it was a little bit better of a situation and Zusi does a very good job coming in from the left to the right. When he’s on his right foot he can get some good shots off.”  Said Sapong: “At this point, I feel comfortable at any of the top three positions on the field. I kind of wish Zusi and I switched sides a little more today to put their backs on their toes, but I feel I can work well at any of those attacking spots.”  Vermes made just one substitution in the match, bringing off Benny Feilhaber after 77 minutes for Soony Saad.  “This was his best performance in regards to his transitional moments in the game. Especially from offense to defense, I thought he was very good,” said Vermes. “He had a lot of pressure on the ball and he made a lot of good decisions tackling-wise when he won it back for us in some really important places and I think he’s still one of the guys getting a feel for how we go, but you can’t say enough about him when he has the ball. He’s very smooth, very calm. He gives us another guy that can keep it.”

Rookie Mechack Jerome made his MLS debut, coming in at right back for Chance Myers, who was hampered by a knee injury. “I thought he had a really, really solid performance. Defensively he was a rock. He actually made, I would say if he had 10 balls, which he didn’t he had a lot more, I would say he probably made eight great decisions,” said Vermes. “So he had a really solid performance and I thought defensively he was very, very good.”

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY

TEAM NOTES #BETHERE323 After a bye week and two road games, the Revs finally open their home schedule this Saturday … the team is 1-1-0 entering its home opener, playing both previous games on the road. EARLY DOORS Saturday’s match against Kansas City – on March 23 – is the team’s earliest-ever home game … before this year, the earliest the Revs ever played in Foxborough was March 24, when the team hosted the Portland Timbers in 2012. GOING FOR 2-OF-3 THIS WEEKEND If the Revolution earns the win on Saturday against Sporting Kansas City, it will mark the first time since 2010 that the Revs produced wins in two of the their first three games … that season, the Revs started the year 2-1-0 with wins at D.C. and vs. Toronto … in 2012, the Revs started the year 0-1-2, following a 1-0-2 start to 2011. LOOKING FOR A SPARK VS. SPORTING The Revs are winless in their last four games against Sporting KC, going 0-2-2 since July 2011 … however, those results include three matches in Kansas City to just one in Foxborough … in the teams’ last three meetings at Gillette Stadium, the Revs are 2-1-0 – including back-to-back wins on Oct. 16, 2010 (1-0 win) and April 23, 2011 (3-2 win). FAMILIAR FACES AS FOES When the Revs line up against Sporting on Saturday, there should be two familiar faces in light blue: left back Seth Sinovic and midfielder Benny Feilhaber … the Revolution originally drafted Sinovic in the second round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, but waived him following the 2010 season … Feilhaber originally came to the Revs through the Allocation Process in April 2011, but was traded to Kansas City in December 2012. CALDWELL, CLUB’S SECOND HOMEGROWN, DEBUTS Braintree, Mass., product Scott Caldwell made his MLS debut on Saturday at Philadelphia, becoming the Revs’ second Homegrown player to appear for the first team … he joined Diego Fagundez, who was the team’s first-ever Homegrown signing in 2010 and who made his MLS debut in August 2011 … Caldwell played 90 minutes in the central midfield against Philly, marking his first-ever MLS action … Caldwell signed with the Revs in December 2012, following his stellar four-year career at collegiate powerhouse, Akron … Caldwell was the Revolution Academy’s first-ever Under-18 captain when the program launched in 2008. SHUTTLEWORTH STEPS IN Bobby Shuttleworth, who started the Revs’ final five games of 2012 in goal, stepped back in between the sticks on Saturday in Philadelphia … Matt Reis was held out of the game with knee inflammation, leading to Shuttleworth’s first start of 2013 … in his last six appearances dating back to 2012, Shuttleworth has posted an 0.83 goals against average with two shutouts. SWITCHING SIDES SEAMLESSLY In the first two games of the year, there hasn’t been a consistent face on the Revs’ midfield wings ... in the season opener, Donnie Smith started on the left and Lee Nguyen started on the right, before Kelyn Rowe came in and substituted Smith on the left ... in the second game at Philadelphia, Nguyen returned to what has become his customary left side, while Rowe slotted back in his more familiar right wing position. TRIO OF RARE ROOKIE DEBUTS In the first two games, the Revs have seen three rookies make their MLS debuts: Scott Caldwell, Andrew Farrell and Donnie Smith ... Farrell and Smith both started in the season opener at Chicago ... last weekend, Scott Caldwell became the third rookie to draw a start when he lined up in the central midfield, while Farrell returned to right back ... the last time the Revs saw three rookies start inside the first two games of a season was 2007, when Adam Cristman, Gary Flood and Wells Thompson all started on opening day ... in 2010, the rookies played in the first two games (Zak Boggs, Zack Schilawski and Seth Sinovic), but only Schilawski and Sinovic started.

BENGTSON OFF “HEX”ING CONCACAF Jerry Bengtson will miss Saturday’s game against Kansas City while away with the Honduras national team ... he departed the Revs on Sunday, March 17, to meet up with Honduras ahead of the team’s CONCACAF Hexagonal World Cup Qualifier against Mexico on Friday, March 22, and at Panama on Tuesday, March 26 ... he is expected to re-join the Revs at training on Thursday, March 28 ... Bengtson has 32 caps for Honduras and has scored 15 goals. BENGTSON RED-HOT FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY Jerry Bengtson, one of CONCACAF’s brightest stars, has had a busy – and successful – six months … since September 1, Bengtson has scored eight goals in 18 games (including six goals in four World Cup Qualifiers) for both club and country … Bengtson’s teams are a collective 6-0-0 in games in which he scores a goal in that span ... Bengtson joined the Revs for preseason camp on Feb. 8 after leading Honduras to a 2-1 win over the U.S. – by scoring the game-winning goal – two days earlier in San Pedro Sula … after scoring two goals for the Revs in Tucson during preseason training, Bengtson followed it up with the game-winning goal at Chicago in the Revs’ season opener. Bengtson’s goals since Sept. 1 vs. Cuba (WCQ) 1vs. Cuba (WCQ) 3 vs. Canada (WCQ) 1 vs. El Salvador 1 vs. U.S.A. (WCQ) 1 vs. Chicago 8 goals in 18 total games

Date Sept. 7 Sept. 11 Oct. 16 Jan. 18 Feb. 6 March 9

Team’s Result W, 3-0 W, 1-0 W, 8-1 W, 1-0 W, 2-1 W, 1-0 7-2-2 overall

ALSTON’S SWITCH BENEFITS THE D Kevin Alston started his 10th straight game – dating back to last year – on the left side of the backline when he lined up at left back on Saturday in Philly … he switched from his customary right back position to cover left back during a congested run of games in 2012 and ended up staying there for what became the final eight games of the season after Chris Tierney suffered a knee injury … Alston, who was a left back at Indiana before signing a Generation adidas contract with MLS in 2009, has helped the Revs post a 4-4-2 record and a 0.70 goals against average in that run (7 GA, 5 shutouts) he’s played at left back. NO. 1 MAKES IT TO TWO, AND A RECENT FIRST With his back-to-back starts at right back in the Revolution’s first-two games of the season, Andrew Farrell became the first number one overall draft pick to start consecutive games to open his new team’s season since Marvell Wynne did so for the New York Red Bulls in 2006 ... no number one pick since Wynne has started his team’s first two games ... the 2012 number one pick - Montreal’s Andrew Wenger - appeared as a substitute in the Impact’s first two games, but did not start both games ... the other recent #1s since Wynne - Omar Salgado (VAN, 2011), Danny Mwanga (PHI, 2010), Steve Zakuani (SEA, 2009), Chance Myers (KC, 2008), Maurice Edu (TFC, 2007) - also did not start the first two games of the year for their clubs ... Farrell became the Revs’ first-ever No. 1 overall pick when the team traded up to take him at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 17, in Indianapolis … Farrell made 64 appearances (47 starts) with Louisville before signing a Generation Adidas contract with MLS. JAY HEAPS EARNS 10TH MLS WIN Jay Heaps is in his second season at the helm of the Revolution, and picked up his 10th win on March 9 at Chicago … his career MLS coaching record is now 10-18-8 … Heaps, 36, is the sixth head coach in club history … Heaps had a nine-year playing career in MLS, first with the Miami Fusion beginning in 1999 – when he was drafted second overall in the MLS College Draft before earning MLS Rookie of the Year honors that season – through June 2001 ... he was traded to his hometown club, New England, in June 2001 where he concluded his career before retiring following the 2009 season. HEAPS MOVING UP THE SHORT LIST On Saturday, Jay Heaps will jump Walter Zenga for sole possession of fourth place on the Revolution games coached list with 37 games ... he enters the KC game tied with Zenga with 36 games coaches … Heaps is currently sixth among Revs coaches with 10 wins, three shy of the fifth-place Zenga.

ONE-GOAL GAMES SEEM TO BE HABIT Both of the Revs’ first two games this year have been one-goal affairs, with the Revs splitting the decisions, going 1-1-0 ... in 2012, the Revs played 19 one-goal games - tied with Columbus for the most in MLS - posting a 4-15-0 mark on the season.

HOW THE ROSTER STANDS Entering Saturday’s game, the Revolution roster stands at 29 players … there are 18 returning players from 2012, and 11 new players … the roster includes seven international players, two Homegrown players, three Generation adidas players and one Designated Player … of the 29 players there are: three goalkeepers, nine defenders, 11 midfielders and six forwards.

SHUTOUT STREAK SNAPPED When Jack McInerney scored against the Revs in the 76th minute on Saturday in Philly, his goal snapped the Revs’ modest 362-minute shutout streak that dated back to Oct. 6, 2012 ... before McInerney scored Saturday, the Revs had posted three straight shutouts (Oct. 20, 2012 vs. Chicago, Oct. 27 at Montreal and March 9 at Chicago) spanning the end of the 2012 season and the start of the 2013 season ... ironically, the last goal scored against the Revs before Saturday’s also came in Philly - by McInerney - on Oct. 6, in a 1-0 loss.

NEW FACES THIS YEAR The team has added 11 new faces this off-season through various acquisition mechanisms … three players signed after playing in Europe (Kalifa Cisse, Andy Dorman and Jose Goncalves) … one player signed through the Re-Entry Process (Chad Barrett) … one player signed through the Homegrown player program (Scott Caldwell) … two players came in after playing in lower leagues (Bilal Duckett – USL, Matt Horth – NASL) … four players were drafted

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (Andrew Farrell – SuperDraft, Gabe Latigue – Supplemental Draft, Donnie Smith – SuperDraft and Luis Soffner – SuperDraft). WHO’S NOT BACK Eight (8) players are no longer with the club following the conclusion of the 2012 season … Benny Feilhaber, who joined the Revs through the Allocation Process in 2011, was traded to Sporting Kansas City … Fernando Cardenas, Alec Purdie, Blake Brettschneider, Michael Roach and Flo Lechner were waived at the end of the season … Blair Gavin and Tim Murray entered the Re-Entry Process. WHAT’S BACK Despite losing eight players from the final roster last year, the Revs returned more than 75 percent of its squad’s performance (lost percentages don’t include mid-season departures): Category Minutes Goals Assists Shots Shots on Goal Fouls Committed Fouls Suffered

BARRETT’S BACK, BUT ON OUR SIDE The Revs picked up a perennial Revs-killer in the 2012 Re-Entry Process, securing the rights to former Chicago, Toronto and LA forward Chad Barrett … Barrett signed with the Revs on Feb. 11, and joined the team for its preseason trip to Tucson, Ariz. ... Barrett, who is in his ninth season in MLS, played in 19 games against New England – including 14 starts – scoring four goals and added four assists ... last season he ended the year with Norway’s Valerenga, where he spent the second half of the 2012 season on loan from the Galaxy and played five games … Barrett has appeared as a substitute in both matches this year, making his Revolution debut on March 9 at Chicago when he came on for Jerry Bengtson in the 90th minute. “HOMETOWN” FEEL ON THE ROSTER Three players on the Revs’ roster are New England natives, giving the team a hometown feel … Scott Caldwell (Braintree, Mass.), Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.) and Chris Tierney (Wellesley, Mass.) are all Massachusetts products, growing up in the Bay State … both Caldwell and Fagundez played for the Revolution Academy and are Homegrown players … Caldwell was the youth teams’ first-ever captain and just completed his stellar four-year career at Akron. SECOND TIME AROUND FOR DORMS Andy Dorman has re-joined the Revolution for his second go-round in New England - and his appearance Saturday in Philly was his first with the club since November 2007 … the Welsh midfielder came to the Revs in November on a free transfer from England’s Crystal Palace after a stint at St. Mirren (Scotland) and a loan spell at Bristol Rovers (England) … the Revs originally drafted Dorman in the fourth round (56th overall) in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft and he was a key figure in the teams that advanced to three straight MLS Cup championship matches (2005, 2006, 2007) and won the team’s first-ever cup championship – the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup … in his first tenure in New England, Dorman made 112 regular-season appearances, while scoring 17 goals and adding 18 assists … in the three-year span from 2005 to 2007, Dorman’s combined 15 goals and 17 assists ranked third on those Revolution squads in total attacking production, behind Taylor Twellman (44 goals, 15 assists) and Steve Ralston (11 goals, 25 assists). VETERAN AT JUST 18 Diego Fagundez has entered his third MLS season at the ripe old age of 18 … the Leominster, Mass., product turned 18 on Valentine’s Day – Feb. 14 – earlier this year and now is playing

in his third season … despite his MLS tenure, he still remains the youngest player on the Revs’ roster while scoring four goals and adding three assists in 28 appearances in his career … while training with the Revs in the morning, Fagundez caps a long day with school in the afternoon, going to classroom sessions later in the day … he is completing both his junior and senior years of high school at Alternative High School in Fitchburg, Mass. ... additionally, he signed his second professional contract - a multi-year extension with the Revs - on March 13, just one month after turning 18 allowing him to legally sign this contract without his parents. FRENCH CONNECTION While many teams may have the song of Spanish throughout the locker room, the Revs have more of a French tune in theirs … three rostered players were either born – or raised – in France: Kalifa Cisse, Dimitry Imbongo and Saer Sene ... additionally, one of the team’s assistant coaches – goalkeepers coach Remi Roy – is also a native French speaker and helped bring all three players to MLS. SENE INJURY UPDATE Saer Sene, who suffered a left knee (shooting leg) injury on Aug. 29, 2012, in a home game against Chivas USA, had reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ACL on Sept. 17 … he has progressed his rehab and has recently begun participating in passing, shooting and smallsided drills with the team, while continuing to build strength and stamina with the team’s athletic trainers and strength staff … if he remains on his current rehab path, Sene is expected to rejoin full action in 3-5 weeks. EARNING TENURE Matt Reis, who is playing in his 11th season with the Revolution, is the club’s longest-tenured player ever … the other players who had long careers with the Revs fall short of Reis’ current tenure: Shalrie Joseph (9.5 seasons – began with Revs in 2003, traded to Chivas USA in August 2012) and Jay Heaps (9.5 – traded to Revs in June 2001, retired at the end of 2009) … Reis has made 244 appearances (all starts), going 88-88-68 and earning 63 shutouts while posting a 1.33 goals against average. NO LANGUAGE BARRIER With players hailing from nine different countries on the roster (Colombia, DKR Congo, England, France, Gambia, Honduras, Portugal and Uruguay in addition to the United States), there is no language barrier in the Revs’ locker room … only one player in the Revs’ locker room does not speak English fluently – Jerry Bengtson (Spanish) – and yet more than half the roster can speak at least a little Spanish, including native speakers Juan Toja and Diego Fagundez … the team’s newer European players also speak multiple languages, making conversing on and off the field easy for the Revolution: Kalifa Cisse (French, Portuguese, Spanish, English and Malian), Jose Goncalves (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German, French and English), Saer Sene (French, English, German, Wolof) and Dimitry Imbongo (French, English, German, Spanish and Wolof). YOUTH PROGRAM RANKS HIGH … AGAIN This winter, U.S. Soccer released its annual ratings of teams that participate in the Development Academy, the top level of youth soccer in the U.S. and Canada ... the Revs once again rated among the nation’s best programs, posting a combined 3.5 rating after U.S. Soccer weighted scores in a variety of categories … the youth-soccer focused outlet, Top Drawer Soccer, took U.S. Soccer’s categorical ratings and developed their own ranking system, as well, placing the Revs as the top youth program in the country – above all other teams in the Development Academy and all MLS teams’ academies … the Revs have so far signed two Homegrown players from their Academy: Diego Fagundez and Scott Caldwell. ROCHESTER AFFILIATION ANNOUNCED The Revolution are one of four teams who have announced formal affiliations with USL PRO teams for the 2012 season, joining with the Rochester Rhinos this year ... also participating in this new program are D.C. (with Richmond), Kansas City (with Orlando) and Philadelphia (with Harrisburg) ... instead of fielding reserve teams in the MLS Reserve League, the Revs instead send a minimum of four players to Rochester for the 2013 season ... while the Revs will be able to call back players at any time, at least four players will be in Rochester througout the team’s USL season ... the current timeline will see the Revs send four players to the Rhinos around April 1 as Rochester’s preseason training runs through April 14.
