SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs FC DALLAS LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. March 25, 2012 (WEEK 3, MLS Game #26) 6 p.m. CT (Galavision; KSMO; FS-SW) Sporting Kansas City are aiming to keep their perfect record for the season intact when they play host to FC Dallas at Livestrong Sporting Park on Sunday evening. Sporting made it two wins from two starts last weekend in their home debut, a 3-0 victory against the New England Revolution. FC Dallas are on the road for the first time after following up a First Kick win with a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers last weekend. REFEREE: Abbey Okulaja. Sporting are tied with the Houston Dynamo with 6 points from 2 matches, leading the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  The tenor of the match changed after just 14 minutes, when Revolution center back Stephen McCarthy was shown a straight red card for a foul on C.J. Sapong.  Graham Zusi was the first to take advantage of the man advantage, cleaning up in front of goal in the 28th minute. Kei Kamara sent in a ball from the right, and Zusi slid to shoot. New England goalkeeper Matt Reis did well to block, but the rebound fell to Zusi, who fired home while still on the ground.  The second goal came on another putback, this time by Kamara. Left winger Bobby Convey drove into the area and crossed to Kamara in the 39th minute. Reis blocked his first low shot, but Kamara pounced on the rebound and drove it home.  Sapong, starting at center forward with Teal Bunbury on U.S. U-23 national team duty, put the game away less than two minutes into the second half when he scored from point-blank range after left back Seth Sinovic pulled back a low pass from the byeline.  Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made one change to the team that opened the season with a 1-0 win against D.C. United at RFK Stadium. C.J. Sapong replaced Teal Bunbury, away on international duty.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin (Lawrence Olum 59), Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Roger Espinoza, Julio Cesar (Luke Sassano 76)- Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi (Paulo Nagamura 57), Bobby Convey - C.J. Sapong. TEAM NEWS  Sporting are one of three teams – along with Houston and Vancouver – yet to concede a goal on the young season.

“It’s such a long season,” center back Matt Besler said. “There’s going to be ups and downs. But we’ve been saying all along, through the preseason, that we really feel ahead of where we’ve ever been, and we’re two-fortwo in showing that. That’s the most important part, getting the shutouts. If you don’t give up a goal, you can’t lose – and I don’t mind not losing.” It’s the second time in three seasons SKC has started with back-to-back shutout victories. “When you’re winning and you’re keeping the ball, you have a lot more energy than when you’re defending all the time,” said right back Chance Myers. “I think everybody was having fun out there tonight, but our mentality was right too. We were ready to come out here and perform tonight.” Left back Seth Sinovic recorded the first point of his MLS career – against his former club – when he set up C.J. Sapong for the third goal. “Bobby (Convey) is able to bring Seth into the game, take a little pressure off of him by actually attracting some guys and then releasing the ball,” Vermes said. “Bobby’s got a great final pass to people. For sure that’s going to be a help to Seth.” Sporting were forced into a change just before the hour mark when center back Aurélien Collin suffered a tight hamstring. “He’s going through therapy,” Vermes said. “I don’t think we’ll know anything until probably Wednesday. I think what happened was, he just kind of cramped up in his hammy and didn’t want to go again. If it’s cramped up and you go on, then there’s a chance of getting a tear or something. It’s still sore, which you kind of expect.” Midfielder Paulo Nagamura, who missed the season opener with a calf strain, was able to make his SKC debut as a second-half substitute. “It feels great,” said Nagamura. “After a few months on the sidelines with injuries, it felt great to play.” The 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year, C.J. Sapong has started off his sophomore campaign with goals in each of SKC’s opening two games. Sapong scored five goals in his rookie season. “I’ve been fortunate to get a lot of opportunities and find myself in the right position, so I’m pretty happy about that,” Sapong said. “I’m pretty confident that I can continue the streak. “

FC DALLAS FC Dallas completed their two-game homestand to start the 2012 season with a draw, a 1-1 result with the Portland Timbers on Saturday evening at FC Dallas Stadium. FCD is tied for fourth place in the Western Conference with 4 points from 2 matches. LAST MATCH  FC Dallas opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Carlos Rodríguez found FCD Academy product Bryan Levya on the right side of the Timbers area. Leyva fired a hard shot that was brushed away by Timbers 'keeper Troy Perkins, only to bounce to a wide-open Blas Pérez waiting to put in the rebound.  Portland answered six minutes after the break. Darlington Nagbe, who came in for Jorge Perlaza to start the second half, collected a Daniel Hernandez turnover outside the penalty area and quickly slid it past FCD 'keeper Kevin Hartman for his first goal of the season.  FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made two changes to the team that opened the season with a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls at FC Dallas Stadium. Bryan Leyva and Carlos Rodriguez came into the wide midfield spots in place of Fabian Castillo and Brek Shea.  FC DALLAS (4-1-4-1): Kevin Hartman - Zach Loyd, Hernan Pertuz, Ugo Ihemelu, Jair Benitez - Daniel Hernandez - Bryan Leyva (George John 46), Ricardo Villar, Andrew Jacobson, Carlos Rodriguez - Blas Perez. TEAM NEWS  FC Dallas were able to come away with a point despite missing Castillo after his injury forced him off early in the season opener, and with Shea away on international duty.  “It was a good result for us considering we were without three of our most important attacking phase players: Fabian Castillo, Brek Shea and David Ferreira,” said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. “I was really pleased with the effort the boys put in. I was very happy we fought all the way to the last second.”  After setting up both FC Dallas goals in his first MLS game, Panamanian international Blas Pérez scored his first league goal in FCD’s 1-1 tie Saturday with the Portland Timbers.  “I feel good [about how I’ve played so far],” Perez said. “I know there are going to be difficult moments in every game, but you have to be mentally and physically prepared. You have to be mature in the sense that when difficult times come, you have to overcome them.  It took nearly three years, but FCD Home Grown Player Bryan Leyva finally made his first MLS start Saturday vs. Portland. Since signing with the club Sept. 20, 2009, Leyva had made one league appearance – a 13minute shift on May 20, 2010 vs. LA.  “He took the shot that lead to the goal and I thought he really did a lot for himself today. Not only for himself personally with confidence, but for his teammates and coaching staff,” said Hyndman. “I think we all felt that he did a really good job.”

Leyva played just 45 minutes, as Hyndman took him off at halftime in favor of center back George John. Hernan Pertuz moved to left back, Jair Benitez moved forward into the midfield and Carlos Rodriguez switched flanks. “It was just too difficult to deal with Portland’s size and physical play in the box," Hyndman said. "I think the strength on Portland’s team is their flank play, getting crosses off, and they got a lot of guys in there that can deal with the crosses." FCD will be without another starter for the next couple of weeks, after Carlos Rodriguez was called into Panama’s U-23 national team for the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament. “I just think we are very thin right now. I didn’t want to put a player late in the game and have him try and get into the rhythm of the game. That is why we only used one substitution,” Hyndman said.

Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | March 25, 2012 vs FC Dallas | www.SportingKC.com When last they met...

Noteworthy milestones...

Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas last met on August 27, 2011 in front of a sell-out crowd at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. FC Dallas earned the three points as a result of their dramatic come-frombehind stoppage-time victory.

Kansas City held a 1-0 lead going into the half and added their second tally in the 68th minute off goals from Kei Kamara and Omar Bravo in that order. However, FC Dallas captain Daniel Hernandez cut Sporting Kansas City’s lead in half in the 70th minute when his free kick made its way through a crowded KC penalty area and into the back of the net.

Just six minutes later Teal Bunbury received his second yellow card of the match, providing Dallas with the one man-advantage. The advantage proved pivotal as FC Dallas went on to score two more unanswered goals.

The first came in the 89th minute, when Brek Shea got himself just a sliver of space on the left sideline. Shea’s service connected with Maicon Santos for the equalizer. The game-winner was eerily similar as Shea once again got himself free out on the left flank, but this time finding rookie Bobby Warshaw, who earned the first points of his MLS career on the play.

FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman played three seasons for Kansas City and started all 90 games from 2007-2009, fostering a 1.4 GAA. Hartman is third all-time in shutouts for Kansas City goalkeepers with 22. FC Dallas forward Scott Sealy was initially drafted out of Wake Forest in 2005 by Kansas City. He spent his first four seasons in MLS in KC making 88 appearances and scoring 28 goals, adding 5 assists, and totaling 5474 minutes in a Wizards uniform. Sealy’s next home in MLS was San Jose where he was teammates with current Sporting Kansas City players Bobby Convey and Jacob Peterson. FC Dallas Goalkeeper Chris Seitz was teammates with Graham Zusi at the University of Maryland when they won the National Championship in 2005. FC Dallas Brek Shea, Zach Loyd and Ugo Ihemelu were teammates with Sporting Kansas City Teal Bunbury, C.J. Sapong, and Graham Zusi at USMNT camp and international friendlies in January of 2012. Shea and Bunbury are currently away on international duty playing for the US U-23 MNT in the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Luke Sassano and Aurelien Collin both scored the first goals of their MLS careers against FC Dallas at FC Dallas Stadium on June 12, 2011. In that same game Graham Zusi earned the first multi-goal game of his MLS career. Ruben Luna scored four goals for FC Dallas in an MLS Reserve League match against Sporting Kansas City on November 9th, 2011.

Kei Kamara is 67 minutes shy of surpassing 10,000 regular season minutes played in his MLS career. Only 163 players have broken the 10,000 minutes played barrier in their MLS careers and Kamara will become one of 53 active players to do so. Kei Kamara and Graham Zusi’s next game-winning assist will move them into a tie for 10th place on the club’s all-time chart, joining Mark Chung, Matt McKeon and Sasha Victorine with 6. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning goal will move him into a tie for 7th place on the club’s all-time chart, joining Chris Brown, Jose Burciaga, Jr., Eddie Johnson, Mo Johnston and Miklos Molnar with 6. Kei Kamara is two shots on goal shy of Chris Brown and Scott Sealy for 10th place (72 sog) on the club’s all-time chart. He is four shots on goal back of Matt McKeon for 9th place (74 sog). Kei Kamara moved past Mark Chung and into the 7th spot on Sporting Kansas City’s career shots chart on Saturday in the team’s 3-0 win over New England. Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | March 25, 2012 vs FC Dallas | www.SportingKC.com Sporting Kansas City News, Notes and headlines Sophomore streak, not slump for Sapong | C.J. Sapong scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute on March 10th at RFK Stadium in front of his friends and family to help Kansas City earn the three points from week 1. This marks the second year in a row the Virginia native has scored a goal in the season opener. Sapong struck again in Sporting KC’s home opener at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on March 17th scoring the third goal of the match to give KC the 3-0 victory.

Kevin Hartman (22), and Bo Oshoniyi (22). Speaking of shutouts | Sporting Kansas City are one of three teams to open the 2012 season with back-to-back shutout victories, along with the Houston Dynamo and Vancouver Whitecaps. In the previous 16 MLS seasons, only 16 teams had accomplished the feat. Should Sporting Kansas City extend the shutout streak to three matches, it would be a club best (surpassing the 269-minute mark set in the 2010 season) and Sporting would become the fifth team in MLS history to start a season with three consecutive clean sheets, pending the outcome of the Houston and Vancouver matches in week 3.

Sporting Kansas City is now 8-0 when Sapong puts the ball in the back of the net. Sapong is one of just four players in the League to have scored more than one goal at the conclusion of week 2. Saint Paddy’s Day Shenanigans | Kei Kamara scored the second goal in Kansas City’s 3-0 victory over the New England Bunbury named to US Under-23 Men’s National Team | Teal Revolution last Saturday. The team’s attendance went up by 19 percent from 2010 to 2011. In its first two home matches of 2012, Dallas has drawn an average of 16,555 fans, an increase of 28.7 percent. Year Home Average Increase 2010 10,815 ‐‐ 2011 12861 19% 2012 16,555 28.7% VILLAR’S A DAD… AND THE MOST FOULED PLAYER IN MLS FC Dallas’ Ricardo Villar is tied with Portland’s Diego Chara for the league lead in fouls suffered with seven. The 32‐year‐old attacking midfielder scored his first goal in an FC Dallas uniform on Sunday, March 11 in a 2‐1 victory over New York. Villar celebrated by pretending to rock a baby to sleep, a tribute to his son Lucas, who was born on February 1, 2012. OFF TO A GOOD START FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City are the only two teams in MLS with two goals scored in the first half of play already this season. Both teams have also not allowed a first half goal this season. KEY STATS: FC DALLAS VS PORTLAND – March 17, 2012 • Andrew Jacobson had a game‐high 15 headers. • Ugo Ihemelu had a team‐high nine clearances. • In just one half of play, George John tied with Portland’s Diego Chara and Rodney Wallace with a game‐high three interceptions. • Daniel Hernandez completed a game‐high 38 passes.

GEORGE JOHN IS BACK George John, who recorded career highs in goals (3), assists (1), minutes played (2,781) and shots (18) during the 2011 regular season, returned to Dallas on March 2 following a two‐month loan with English Championship League side West Ham United. One of MLS’s top center backs, John’s return gives FC Dallas four rock solid options in central defense (Ihemelu, Pertuz, Hedges and John). MLS MVP DAVID FERREIRA 2010 MLS MVP, David Ferreira, is expected to make his return from injury early in 2012. Ferreira missed most of the 2011 season after suffering an ankle injury against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 23, 2011. Ferreira netted eight goals and added 13 assists to lead FC Dallas during his MVP season. He picked up another three goals and an assist in 2011 before suffering a broken ankle in his seventh match of the season. FC DALLAS STADIUM ADVANTAGE In 2011, FC Dallas allowed the second‐fewest goals against at home. With only 11 goals against in Frisco, Dallas was sandwiched between the L.A. Galaxy (8GA) and Real Salt Lake (15GA). EXTRA SET PIECES FC Dallas suffered 456 fouls from opponents last season, which puts Dallas first in MLS in dead ball opportunities (and bruises). OFFSEASON ADDITIONS FCD loaded up on defenders and forwards during the offseason. The club brought in seven new players. Forwards Blas Perez, Luis Perea and Scott Sealy will look to supplement the offense while defenders Matt Hedges, Carlos Rodriguez, Alex Lee and Hernan Pertuz will look to improve on Dallas’ 2011 goals against of 1.15. FC DALLAS SIGNS COLOMBIAN STRIKER LUIS PEREA FC Dallas signed 6’2” Colombian striker Luis Perea on March 13. Perea spent his youth career with Atlético Nacional. In 2010, he appeared in 36 games for León de Huánuco, scoring 22 goals for the Peruvian side. The success led to a loan with Chilean football club Everton de Viña del Mar, where the young forward notched six goals in 13 games. Perea then remained in Peru to play for Universidad San Martin de Porres until the club folded earlier this year. FC DALLAS’ MILESTONE ASSIST Blas Perez’s two‐assist outing against New York on March 11 lifted Dallas two passes closer to reaching the 800 assist mark. FCD now has 797 franchise assists, three passes away from reaching a milestone only two other MLS clubs have attained (DCU 837 assists, LA 820 assists). Perez is also tied for the league lead in assists with Beckham, Alvaro Fernandez, Jewsbury, Kosuke Kimura and Zusi.

USSF HALL OF FAMER FERNANDO CLAVIJO NAMED TD A native of Maldonado, Uruguay, Clavijo played three seasons in the American Soccer League, two in the North American Soccer League and 10 in Major Indoor Soccer League before transitioning to a spot on the sidelines. Inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2005, Clavijo earned 61 caps for the U.S. National Team. When his playing career ended, Clavijo stepped to the sidelines and was head coach of the Colorado Rapids from 2005 to 2008. He also served as an assistant with the MetroStars in 1998 and head coach of the New England Revolution from 2000 to 2002. At the international level, Clavijo was an assistant coach with the Nigerian national team in 1998 and head coach of the Haitian national team from 2003 to 2005. Most recently, Clavijo has served as executive director of soccer for Traffic Sports USA in Florida. SHEA CALLED INTO U.S. U‐23 NATIONAL TEAM CAMP U.S. Under‐23 Men’s National Team head coach Caleb Porter’s 19‐ player roster for training camp convening March 13 included FC Dallas winger Brek Shea. Porter is beginning his final preparations for the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament. The U.S. will compete in Group A, which kicks off March 22 at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. LOYD’S SOPHOMORE SEASON Zach Loyd finished the 2011 season in a four‐way tie with Daniel Hernandez, Marvin Chavez and Brek Shea for second on the team in th assists. FCD’s first pick (5 overall) in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, Loyd logged career highs in every category last season despite playing 24 matches for Dallas during his rookie season. Loyd scored Dallas’ first match of this season when he tucked away a pass from Blas Perez in th the 11 minute of FC Dallas’ 2‐1 victory over New York on March 11. BREK KEEPING BUSY FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea spent the offseason training with Arsenal FC in Europe. He also logged substantial minutes with the U.S. Under‐23 National Team in preparation of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. On top of that, Shea was called into the full U.S. Men’s National Team to assist in a historic 1‐0 victory over Italy in Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa on Feb. 29. One of Shea’s proudest achievements is the fact that he has been able to improve his stats each year he has been in the league. Year Age GP G A 2008 18 2 0 0 2009 19 19 0 4 2010 20 25 5 4 2011 21 31 11 4 2012 22 1 ‐ ‐ 2011 SHUTOUT STREAK Kevin Hartman and the FC Dallas defense held the longest shutout streak of the 2011 MLS season at 531 minutes (05/01/11 – 05/28/11). During that stretch, the team went 4‐0‐3. MLS RESERVE LEAGUE GOLDEN BOOT FC Dallas Home Grown player Ruben Luna led the MLS Reserve League in goals with six during the 2011 season. Leading the league in goals is nothing new for the 20‐year‐old striker. Luna recorded 38 goals in 27 games for the FC Dallas Academy U16 team in 2009. That total gave him the most goals in the U16 U.S. Development Academy League that season. Luna also found the back of the net twice in a CONCACAF Champions League match against Tauro FC on Sept. 28 to lead FC Dallas in goals scored during the competition.

FC DALLAS STADIUM ATTENDANCE RECORDS Advancing to MLS Cup 2010 is having lasting impressions on FC Dallas’ fan base.
