NEW YORK CITY FC vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY YANKEE STADIUM, Bronx, N.Y. March 28, 2015 (WEEK 4, MLS Game #22) 7 p.m. ET (YES; KMCI-38) Still undefeated to start their inaugural MLS campaign, New York City FC return home to take on Sporting Kansas City in an interconference clash Saturday evening at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC still top the Eastern Conference, returning home off a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids last weekend. Sporting are looking for their first win of the season following their jump to the Western Conference, coming off a home scoreless draw with the Portland Timbers. REFEREE: Edvin Jurisevic. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. Coaches record: Jason Kreis vs. KC: P12 W4 L6 D2 … Peter Vermes vs. NYC: first game NEW YORK CITY FC New York City FC remained undefeated to begin their MLS history, playing to a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. NYCFC sit atop the Eastern Conference with 5 points from 3 matches. LAST MATCH NYCFC was left a man in the 82nd minute when defender Shay Facey pulled down the newly-inserted Juan Ramirez just outside the box, shown a second yellow card by referee Sorin Stoica. NYCFC goalkeeper Josh Saunders was credited with seven saves for the match, most during the first half when the home side held a dramatic territorial edge. Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin made two saves on the day. NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis made one change to the team that defeated the New England Revolution 2-0 at Yankee Stadium. Shay Facey came into the back four in place of Josh Williams. NEW YORK CITY FC (4-4-2): Josh Saunders - Shay Facey (sent off 82), Jason Hernandez, Chris Wingert, Jeb Brovsky - Sebastian Velasquez (Javier Calle 71), Mix Diskerud (Kwame Watson-Siriboe 85), Andrew Jacobson, Ned Grabavoy - David Villa, Adam Nemec (Khiry Shelton 61). TEAM NEWS New York City FC are still undefeated for their MLS history, following the scoreless draw at Colorado. The three games unbeaten to start matches the longest undefeated run by any expansion team in league annals (Seattle Sounders FC won their first three matches before losing in 2009). “It’s one of those things early on, especially being an expansion team, with three points to towards the end of the year with three ties away from home – that’s huge,” said goalkeeper Josh Saunders. “It’s better than taking a loss. Those three points can add up towards the end of the year. We’ll take it.” NYCFC have also recorded back-to-back shutouts, the 180 minutes without conceding tied for second-longest in MLS this season. “This is three matches in a row where I think [Saunders has] really saved our skins,” NYCFC coach Jason Kreis told the YES Network. “Today was again spectacular and I couldn’t be happier for a nicer guy.” Said defender Jeb Brovsky: “It’s great for the morale, it’s great for the club. Looking forward, I think the club has put a big effort on defensive work and I think all 11 guys were committed today. Josh [Saunders] made some big saves for us and it’s big-time to go away with a clean sheet.” After coming on as a substitute the week before, Shay Facey made his first MLS start in the Colorado match. But he will be out of the Sporting KC match after being sent off with eight minutes to play. Following the red card, Kwame Watson-Siriboe made his NYCFC debut, coming into central defense, and Chris Wingert moved to left back from the center with Brovsky shifting flanks. “I think the chances they did have were not completely clear-cut chances and they were chances I was willing to give up outside the 18,” Saunders said. “I think we shaded them in good directions and we played the ball very well and forced them into chances that were half-chances. … I think at that point it was just come together, keep your spacing tight and work as hard as you can until the whistle blows and get that point.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
There will be another change up top for the SKC match as Adam Nemec was called into the Slovakian national team for its Euro 2016 qualifiers over the weekend.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City remained without a victory to begin the season, returning home for a scoreless draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday evening at Sporting Park. Sporting are in a tie for eighth place in the Western Conference with 2 points from 3 matches. LAST MATCH Sporting had the better chances on the night, but failed to put them on target -- center back Ike Opara twice sending headers off the mark, and fullback Jalil Anibaba also flashing a header over the goal. Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey was credited with two saves for his second clean sheet of the young season, while SKC goalkeeper Luis Marin made three saves, the best in the 62nd minute when he stopped an effort from Fanendo Adi. SKC manager Peter Vermes made three changes to the team that fell 3-1 to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. Jalil Anibaba and Matt Besler came into the back four for Amadou Dia and Kevin Ellis, and Jimmy Medranda started in a wide role in place of Krisztian Nemeth. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Luis Marin - Jalil Anibaba, Ike Opara, Matt Besler, Marcel de Jong Benny Feilhaber (Servando Carrasco 84) - Paulo Nagamura, Roger Espinoza (Soni Mustivar 90) - Jimmy Medranda (Bernardo Anor 56), Dom Dwyer, Graham Zusi. TEAM NEWS Sporting KC saw their season-opening winless run extended to three games following the home draw with Portland – their second at Sporting Park. “I thought we were very good on both sides of the ball,” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “I thought we were excellent on our set pieces and very dangerous. We could have scored an easy two or three goals on the set pieces. Sometimes they don´t go in, but to play like that, I like where we are at. I like the way we are progressing as a team. I like the way we are starting to understand how to play. I think we are moving in the right direction.” Sporting saw their overall league winless streak extended to five games dating back to last year, matching the longest since going 10 games without a victory during the 2011 season. “Obviously, a draw at home is not what you want,” midfielder Benny Feilhaber said. “You always want to get the wins. But having said that, it's still early in the season. I think it's more important at this point in the season to improve, and I think we did that.” With Matt Besler again available after suspension, he came into central defense alongside Ike Opara. Jalil Anibaba made his Sporting debut, coming in at right back for rookie Amadou Dia. “[Anibaba] was told to stay at home more so than [Marcel] de Jong and I thought he did an excellent job. He was great in his individual duels. He made some very good decisions of when the time was to just whack it out and not try to play,” said Vermes. “At the same time, I thought he was pretty dangerous on a couple of set pieces. He almost had a diving header in the first half and he had that one that just squeaked past the post late in the second half. He had a very good game for us.” Said Opara: “We've had three different lineups defensively in the first three games, but all the guys have worked hard and given their all. It finally gelled for the full 90 minutes. For the first two games, I thought we were good at times defensively, but we had a couple lapses. We did a good job of minimizing those lapses.” Jimmy Medranda was also given his MLS debut, starting in a wide attacking role before coming off after 56 minutes, as Krisztian Nemeth was slowed by injury. “It is a really big game for him. He doesn´t play all that often and this was his opportunity. I thought that at times he was really good on the ball. His service was really good and you saw that little brilliance in the first half where he dribbled through everybody and laid the one ball off,” said Vermes. “He has that ability to do that more. … He is not there yet but I think all in all, it was a good performance for him and he is a kid that I think has a lot of potential in the future.”

LAST MATCH RECAP New York City FC registered their second consecutive shutout as the Club and the Colorado Rapids played to a scoreless draw in front of 17,692 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday afternoon. However, despite the lack of goals fans still had an eventful game played out before their eyes. The Rapids had their first shot at a goal within 10 minutes of kick-off when Gabriel Torres toed the ball to the goal post, but with goalkeeper Josh Saunders on top form hitting a season-high seven saves throughout the game, the ball was quickly knocked away. As the game progressed, Nemec, Jacobson and Villa all had close encounters with the goal, but unfortunately none of those attempts yielded the desired edge on the Rapids. The challenge increased when New York City FC were limited to 10 men as defender Shay Facey, making his first professional start, was shown a second yellow card in the 82nd minute for a tackle on Juan Ramirez just outside of the 18-yard box. Down one man, New York City FC carried on fighting, earning the point that would be just enough to bring them to the top of the Eastern Conference table this week.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER STANDINGS (as of March 27, 2015)
Jason Kreis at the Helm New York City FC’s Head Coach, Jason Kreis, is already a household name across America having established himself as a world-class soccer player and coach over the last two decades. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Kreis has seen his sporting career go from strength to strength beginning with his successful four year stint at Duke University with the Blue Devils. He then went on to play for several minor league clubs before joining Dallas Burn during the Inaugural MLS Draft in 1995. Not long afterwards Kreis scored Burn’s historic first goal and his performance on the pitch over the next four years would see him crowned the League’s first American-born MVP in 1999, a year in which he led the MLS’s scoreboard in both points and goals. In 2004, Kreis became Real Salt Lake’s first player when the Club joined the MLS as its twelfth franchise and he soon left his mark on MLS history yet again by scoring the team’s first ever goal and as a result cementing his place as the first player in the League to score the inaugural goal for two different clubs. A year later, during the MLS’s tenth season, Kreis would continue to establish himself as a trailblazer when he became the first player in the League’s history to score 100 goals. Today Kreis remains the fifth highest scorer in MLS history. With over 300 professional appearances and 14 caps for the US national team under his belt, it was no surprise when Real Salt Lake named Kreis their head coach for the 2007 season. Despite being the youngest active head coach in the MLS, Kreis’s professionalism on the pitch allowed him to naturally transition into his new role and as a result, his strong leadership at Real Salt Lake brought the club a string of success over the next seven years he served as head coach. This success included winning Real Salt Lake’s first MLS Cup Championship in 2009 and, most recently, coming second to Sporting Kansas City following a dramatic penalty shoot-out that saw the club beat Real Salt Lake by a very narrow margin. Taking into account his dynamic and inspiring MLS career, on December 11, 2013 New York City FC was proud to announce Jason Kreis as the team’s new head coach for their inaugural MLS season. Captain Villa: Already an MLS Legend New York City FC made an early splash on June 2, 2014 when they signed their first-ever player, Spanish international star David Villa. As Spain’s alltime leading goal scorer, putting David on the New York City FC roster and naming him captain seemed like the perfect first move to kick-start the Club’s campaign for the 2015 MLS season and he definitely hasn’t failed to impress. In fact, David’s show stopping performance on the pitch has caught the eye of the entire MLS and newly named Player of the Week following last week’s impressive victory over the Revolution. David began the season by scoring the Club’s first-ever goal in their pre-season friendly versus St. Mirren in February, but what fans got to witness first-hand on Sunday was even more memorable. Not only did David net the team’s first goal with the finesse of a seasoned player, he also played an essential role in the Club’s second goal which saw Patrick Mullins solidify New York City FC’s lead and eventual win. With this much to talk about already, David has certainly proven why he was New York City FC’s first-ever signing and captain. At Home with the Yankees From day one the New York Yankees have welcomed New York City FC to the Big Apple with open arms and have even offered to share their home, the iconic Yankee Stadium for the team’s inaugural MLS season. Located in the Bronx, the stadium is a New York landmark and has hosted countless historic sporting moments. As New York City FC makes the stadium its new home, the bar is set to join the ranks of sporting greatness this stadium has already been witness to. An All-Star Coaching Team Joining Kreis on the coaching bench are fellow sporting all-stars: Miles Joseph, CJ Brown, Robert Vartughian, Aidan Byrne and Oscar Pitillas. Joseph and Brown have earned a combined total of 18 caps for the US national team and have also already left their mark on the MLS scene with a string of outstanding stats that include Brown’s record 25,738 minutes of game time with Chicago Fire. Likewise, Vartughian and Byrne’s coaching experience with international youth and university teams across America is unparalleled, making them a vital asset within the New York City FC framework that is further bolstered by the international edge Pitillas offers. The lone non-soccer player of the bunch, Pitillas is a former Spanish Olympic hurdler who brings over ten years of physical training expertise with him following his time with reigning Spanish La Liga champions Atlético Madrid, a team which New York City FC Captain David Villa previously called home. 15,000 and Counting Over 15,000 New York City FC season tickets have already been snapped by the Club’s ever-growing fan base and numbers are expected to rise as the season kicks into gear. The 2015 season ticket for New York City FC’s inaugural season not only allows fans to count themselves among the Club’s
Founding Members, but also offers them a range of exciting opportunities and money-can’t-buy experiences all season long. Over 1,000 new members have joined in the last two weeks and more than 60% of the current total season ticket holders are now proud owners of their first-ever season ticket for any professional sport. The Badge The official New York City FC badge, created by renowned designer Rafael Esquer, was the result of more than 100,000 online votes cast by fans who were invited to take part in the process that would decide the symbol that is now the bedrock of the Club’s identity. The winning emblem was inspired by the old New York City Subway Token that was created by the Transit Authority in 1953 and used as the standard fare for 50 years; a nod to New York’s rich history, which the Club aspires to become an integral part of. The circle is a symbol of unity bringing the city together as one and the two pentagons on either side represent the joining of each of its five boroughs. The colors navy blue, white and orange, all of which are incorporated into the badge, were inspired by the New York City flag, while the font of monogram reflects the rich graphic language that is recognisable across New York’s five boroughs. Head to Head It’s back to the Yankee Stadium for New York City FC this weekend and as the team faces the 2013 MLS champs, Sporting Kansas City, they are eager to repeat their first landmark home victory in another case of rookie versus veteran. While New York City FC will kick-off the game undefeated, with one win and two consecutive clean sheets under their belt, a record the team are keen to maintain, Sporting Kansas City will be battling for their first win of the season. Both teams will be a few men down with New York City FC’s Adam Nemec and Khiry Shelton and Sporting KC’s Marcel de Jong, Roger Espinoza and Erik Palmer-Brown all away on international duty. Nemec and Shelton have a combined total of 315 minutes of game time, having played in all three of the Club’s fixtures to date and Nemec starting all three. Likewise, Sporting’s de Jong and Espinoza have tallied 449 minutes on the pitch already this season, which means familiar faces on both sides won’t be present for the first time this season. Shay Facey will also be unavailable for New York City FC through suspension, following the two yellow cards he received during the team’s last fixture versus the Colorado Rapids. Call to Duty Two of New York City FC’s players have been called up for international duty this week: Adam Nemec and Khiry Shelton. Nemec, a regular starting forward for the team, will be representing Slovakia this week as they go head to head with Luxembourg in their attempt to qualify for the 2016 UEFA European Championship. Slovakia currently top EURO 2016 Qualifying Group C with a perfect 4-0-0 record and this fixture could see Nemec snap up his 15th cap for Slovakia. Shelton, another popular forward, joins the US U-23 squad for their first 2015 training camp. Shelton is one of 17 call-ups who will come together in Tuzla, Bosnia & Herzegovina to prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Part of their training will include two friendlies against Bosnia and Denmark. Saunders’ Striking Saves For the third consecutive week, Josh Saunders has come up huge for New York City FC. And for the third consecutive week, the veteran goalkeeper has had one of his stops nominated for the MLS Save of the Week. Saunders had a season-high seven saves as New York City FC drew 0-0 with Colorado on Saturday evening making the Club’s second shutout in a row and the 22nd in his MLS career. This week’s stunning save happened in the eighth minute of the game when Gabriel Torres latched onto a bouncing ball inside the box and toe poked a shot toward the lower left-hand corner, but Saunders covered the near post perfectly, pushing the attempt away from goal. Looking Ahead New York City FC will break for two weeks when the whistle blows on Saturday evening and will not be back in action until April 11th when they head to PPL Park to take on Philadelphia Union for the first of two consecutive fixtures against the Club’s southern neighbour. It will be the first time New York City FC will face a non-charter club since their inaugural 0-0 draw v Orlando City SC.

THREE PLAYERS MAKE SKC DEBUTS IN PORTLAND DRAW Luis Marin made three saves for the first shutout of his MLS career as Sporting
KC battled the Portland Timbers to a 0-0 draw last Saturday at Sporting Park. Captain Matt Besler returned from his one-game suspension and anchored a backline that welcomed Jalil Anibaba into the starting lineup for his Sporting KC debut. Portland was held to seven shots - their fewest since August 2014 - as the Timbers tied their third straight match to open the 2015 season. The second half of the match saw midfielder Servando Carrasco and Soni Mustivar make their Sporting KC debuts. Carrasco, who was introduced after 84 minutes, is a fifth-year MLS veteran who played 60 league matches for Seattle (201113) and Houston (2013-14). Mustivar subbed on in the third minute of stoppage time for his first MLS appearance. The 25-year-old has played each of the last three seasons with Petrolul Ploiesti in the Romanian first division.
JON KEMPIN LOANED TO SAN ANTONIO SCORPIONS
Sporting KC announced last week that the club has loaned goalkeeper Jon Kempin to the North American Soccer League’s San Antonio Scorpions. The 21-yearold joins the defending NASL champions ahead of their league opener on April 4. Kempin, 21, begins his sixth pro season after joining the U.S. Men’s National Team in January. The Leawood, Kansas, native made five competitive appearances for Sporting KC in 2014, including his debut in MLS and the CONCACAF Champions League, while also spending time on loan at OKC Energy FC of USL PRO. Kempin earned back-to-back MLS Save of the Week honors in his first two MLS appearances and was named MVP of the 2014 MLS Chipotle Homegrown Game. In doing so, he became the youngest at his position to play in MLS since 2012 and entered the record books as the youngest keeper to start an MLS match in club history.
DEFENSIVE DUO NAMED TO MLS TEAM OF THE WEEK Defenders Marcel de Jong and Ike Opara received MLSsoccer.com Team of the
Week honors following last Saturday’s shutout of the Portland Timbers. In his second MLS appearance, Canadian left back de Jong won a game-high four tackles and helped Sporting KC post their first clean sheet of 2015. He also created four chances, tied for most of any player in MLS Week 3, including a pinpoint cross in the second half that Opara headed narrowly over the crossbar. Opara earns Team of the Week recognition for the second time in three weeks after missing most of 2014 through injury. Last Saturday, he limited the impact of Portland striker Fanendo Adi and led all players with eight interceptions and five aerial duels. The centerback now leads MLS with 20 interceptions on the season, five more than any other player.
MIKEY LOPEZ LOANED TO USL PRO AFFILIATE OKC ENERGY FC
Sporting KC announced Tuesday that the club has loaned midfielder Mikey Lopez to the team’s USL PRO affiliate OKC Energy FC. Lopez returns on loan to the USL, where he recorded one goal and one assist in 14 appearances split between Orlando City SC (nine games) and OKC Energy FC (five games) a year ago. The 22-year-old also logged eight MLS appearances for Sporting Kansas City in 2014 during a breakout second professional season. OKC Energy FC kicks off their 2015 schedule on Saturday with an in-state match-up against Tulsa Roughnecks FC, one of 12 new expansion sides in the 24-team USL. Lopez represented the United States at the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey and made his professional debut during the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

SUCCESS IN KANSAS CITY
Sporting KC begins their 20th season as one of nine active charter members in Major League Soccer. Led by seventh-year Manager Peter Vermes, Sporting KC is the only club to win an MLS Cup (2013), a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (2012) and multiple conference regular season titles (2011, 2012) over the past nine seasons. Since 2011, Vermes has guided the team to four straight postseason appearances and 67 MLS victories (including playoffs), third most in the league. During that time, Sporting KC has recorded a league-best 29 road wins. In addition to winning championships, the club has seen many of its current players earn individual accolades. Winger Graham Zusi was named MLS Breakout Player of the Year in 2011, while captain Matt Besler received MLS Defender of the Year recognition in 2012. A pair of three-time MLS All-Stars, Zusi (28 caps) and Besler (25 caps) are veterans of the United States Men’s National Team and signed Designated Player contracts with Sporting KC last July after competing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Last year, Dwyer scored 22 MLS goals and 24 goals in all competitions to set new single-season records for the club. The 24-year-old has scored 50 goals in all competitions since the start of 2013—28 with Sporting KC and 22 with former USL PRO affiliate Orlando City SC. Now entering his fourth year in Kansas City, Dwyer signed a contract extension during this offseason. Sporting KC also welcomes back Honduran international midfielder Roger Espinoza, who played five seasons for the team from 2008-2012. After becoming an MLS All-Star in 2012, Espinoza moved to Wigan Athletic where he won the 2013 FA Cup title and made 57 total appearances across the English Premier League, English Championship, UEFA Europa League and domestic cups. He is the only active MLS player to have competed in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and the 2012 Summer Olympics. 4

Eighth-year veteran Chance Myers enters 2015 as Sporting KC’s longest tenured player. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft has made 145 appearances for the club in all competitions, recording four goals and 15 assists from the wing back position. Myers eclipsed 30 MLS appearances in both 2011 and 2012 as a regular starter, and after making a career-high 31 MLS starts in 2013 (including playoffs), was the top-rated outside back on the MLS Castrol Index. Despite missing most of 2014 with an Achilles injury, he ranks third in MLS with 96 successful crosses from open play (including postseason) since the beginning of 2011. Myers signed a new contract with the club last year after joining the U.S. Men’s National Team for the first time in his career as a member of Jurgen Klinsmann’s January Camp in 2014. He previously played for the U.S. U-18, U-20 and U-23 youth national teams.
Sporting KC signed defensive midfielder Soni Mustivar ahead of the 2015 season. The 25-year-old made his MLS debut as a second-half substitute on March 21 against Portland. Mustivar began his professional career as a teenager with SC Bastia in France’s Ligue 2 during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. Following a loan spell at US Orleans (France), he moved to FC Petrolul Ploiesti and played each of the past three seasons in Romania’s Liga I. He recorded 61 league appearances with two goals in addition to playing eight matches in the UEFA Europa League. He started in Petrolul’s triumph in the 2012-13 Romanian Cup Final. Mustivar has earned six caps for the Haiti Men’s National Team. He most recently played in three matches at the 2014 CFU Caribbean Cup in November to help Haiti secure a third place finish and qualify for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Prior to making his international debut with Haiti in 2013, he was a youth international for France at the U-20 level. 15

Sporting KC Coach Bios | March 28, 2015 at New York City FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager | Peter Vermes
Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin
Peter Vermes enters his seventh season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2015. He is the team’s second-longest serving head coach, and his .547 regular season winning percentage (76-59-46) is best in club history. During his tenure, he has won two major trophies – the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – as well as two MLS Eastern Conference regular season titles (2011, 2012). He is the second coach to lead Sporting KC to four straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team.
Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include: scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster and the Sporting KC Juniors program. Vermes, an original member of Major League Soccer, retired from the League in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States National Team. He recorded one assist for the Red, White and Blue. The U.S. team went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin appeared. Zavagnin married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It marked the first time the United States had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, appearing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.
Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 184 MLS matches and playing more than 16,000 minutes. He was nominated on the players’ ballot for the National Soccer Hall of Fame from 2007-2012. In 2013, Vermes became eligible for the veteran ballot and on October 11, 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005. In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
Fitness Coach | Mateus Manoel Mateus Manoel is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City as Head Fitness Coach. His responsibilities cover all aspects of sport performance and science for the team, including strength and conditioning, injury prevention, field practices, nutrition, fitness monitoring (training load and readiness), player re-adaptation following rehab and recovery.
Assistant Coach | John Pascarella Assistant Coach John Pascarella played professionally for nine seasons before beginning his coaching career in 1998 at the University of Maryland. Pascarella played club soccer with Sporting Kansas City Technical Director Peter Vermes. His playing experience took him to Peru before he returned to the United States to play in the A-League and MLS.
In the summer of 2010, Manoel was an Assistant Fitness Coach for the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team during the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He had formerly served as the Head Fitness Coach for the Mexican Men’s National Team in 2009, working with renowned coach Sven-Goran Eriksson. During 2007 and 2008, Manoel held a position with Athletes’ Performance in the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, where he worked with professional athletes from a variety of sports, including NFL, NHL, MLB, and MLS (Chivas USA and LA Galaxy). Previously, he had assisted with strength and conditioning for D.C. United from the MLS, while concurrently holding the position of Sports Performance Director with Velocity Sports Performance in Alexandria, Virginia.
Once his playing career was over, Pascarella began coaching as a member of Sasho Cirovski’s staff at Maryland. He then went on to work in Northern Virginia youth soccer circles as a high school coach and Olympic Development Program coach before becoming the Head Coach and Technical Director of the Northern Virginia Royals of the USL’s Premier Development League for two seasons. Pascarella joined Kansas City’s technical staff in 2009 and was a goalkeeper and fitness coach until 2011, when he became an assistant.
Manoel holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from George Washington University, where he was also responsible for the strength and conditioning needs of the Colonials Men’s Varsity Soccer Team. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland - College Park and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Manoel was born in Brazil and is fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish.
