VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY EMPIRE FIELD, Vancouver, B.C. 4 p.m. PT (RogersSN(PAC); KSMO)

April 2, 2011 (WEEK 3; MLS Game 22)

A pair of teams looking regain their First Kick success meet when Vancouver Whitecaps FC return home to Empire Field to play host to Sporting Kansas City. After a win against Toronto FC in the opener, Whitecaps FC fell 1-0 at Philadelphia last weekend. Sporting are also looking to regain First Kick form, a 3-2 win at Chivas USA followed by a 32 loss last week at Chicago. REFEREE: Silviu Petrescu. RETURN MATCH: 6/25: Sporting Kansas City vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 7:30 p.m. CT (TSN)  Coaches record: Teitur Thordarson v KC: First game … Peter Vermes vs. VAN: First game VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Vancouver Whitecaps FC weren’t able to build on their season-opening victory, falling 1-0 to Philadelphia Union on Saturday afternoon at PPL Park. Whitecaps FC have 3 points from 2 games on the season. LAST MATCH  Whitecaps FC went a man down when Eric Hassli became the first player in club history to be sent off. The French striker picked up two yellow cards – one in the 25th minute, the second in the 58th minute.  Union finally took advantage in the 77th minute. Sebastien Le Toux found himself alone in the box with the ball after a deflection bounced right to him. He slotted it over to a wide-open Carlos Ruiz, who had little trouble finding the back of the net for his first goal with Philadelphia.  Whitecaps FC head coach Teitur Thordarson made three changes to the team that defeated Toronto FC 4-2 at Empire Field. Greg Janicki and Blake Wagner came into the back four for Jay DeMerit and Michael Boxall, both on international duty, and Nizar Khalfan came in for the injured Davide Chiumiento.  VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-4-2): Joe Cannon - Jonathan Leathers, Greg Janicki, Alain Rochat, Blake Wagner - Nizar Khalfan (Long Tan 88), Terry Dunfield, Gershon Koffie, Russell Teibert (Wes Knight 64) - Eric Hassli (sent off 57), Atiba Harris (Camilo 83). TEAM NEWS  After scoring two goals in his MLS debut in Whitecaps FC’s 4-2 season-opening win, Vancouver Designated Player Eric Hassli was sent off in the 57th minute of the loss at Philadelphia after receiving a second caution.  "What happened today was totally unnecessary," said Whitecaps' coach Teitur Thordarson. "This is our own stupidity. We should have been professional enough to stay controlled. I told Eric straight away I wasn't happy."  Missing both starting center backs from the season opener, Thordarson gave a start to Greg Janicki while also moving Alain Rochet into central defense. Blake Wagner made his 2011 debut at left back.  “As a team, we played pretty well defensively,” said Janicki. “It was kind of a defensive battle the whole game. Neither side was really creating many chances.” Said Rochet to The Province: "We lost the balance from the first game."  Joe Cannon made his first MLS start in more than seven months, after breaking an ankle last summer while playing for the San Jose Earthquakes. Jay Nolly, who backstopped Whitecaps FC in the opening win over Toronto last week, injured his shoulder in training and could not play.  “Now that I’ve been out there, everything is a go. You can’t look back. You work and look forward,” Cannon said.  In addition to needing to replace Hassli, Thordarson could also be forced into a change for strike partner Atiba Harris.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

  

“Atiba has been recovering from the weekend. Hopefully he will be in training on Thursday,” said Thordarson. “But who will partner him? I need these days coming up to find out. … It will most probably be Long Tan or Camilo.” Thordarson will also need to find a replacement for Russell Teibert, who will be away on international duty with the Canadian U-20 national team. Omar Salgado, the No. 1 overall selection by Vancouver in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, is now available for selection after his international transfer certificate was received. Salgado, however, will likely miss the next three Whitecaps FC matches while with the U.S. U-20 national team.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City went down to defeat for the first time in 2011, falling a 3-2 to the Chicago Fire on Saturday afternoon at Toyota Park. Sporting have 3 points from 2 games on the season. LAST MATCH  Chicago went up a goal and up a man in the 34th minute, when Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo was sent off after pulling down Gaston Puerari as he raced into the area on a solo run. Fire forward Diego Cháves promptly buried the resulting penalty kick.  The Fire doubled their advantage in the 40th. Chicago midfielder Mike Videira played Puerari into the left side of the box, and the Uruguayan forward took one touch towards the middle before curling a 15-yard shot past KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.  Kansas City defender Matt Besler put Sporting on the board just after the break. Fire 'keeper Sean Johnson fumbled a low cross from midfielder Davy Arnaud and Besler jumped on the ball at the back post, tapping in from a few yards out.  But Pappa restored the 2-goal margin with an absolutely fantastic goal in the 59th minute. The Guatemalan midfielder collected the ball in the middle of Kansas City’s half and improbably wove through four Sporting defenders before firing a low right-footed toe-poke inside the left post from the top of the box.  Kansas City pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute. Halftime substitute Teal Bunbury collected an errant pass from Fire left back Gonzalo Segares in the middle of Chicago’s half and coolly slotted a shot inside the left post.  SKC boss Peter Vermes made three changes to the team that recorded a 3-2 victory against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. Scott Lorenz and Chance Myers came into the back four and Stephane Auvray into the midfield, in place of Luke Sassano, Julio Cesar and Kei Kamara.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Scott Lorenz (Birahim Diop 84), Matt Besler, Roger Espinoza, Chance Myers - Stephane Auvray (Graham Zusi 69) - Davy Arnaud, Craig Rocastle (Teal Bunbury 46)- Milos Stojcev, C.J. Sapong, Omar Bravo (sent off 30) TEAM NEWS  The match turned late in the first half with the two Fire goals that quickly followed Omar Bravo’s red card. Bravo will not be available for the Vancouver match.  “The positive is they were playing in their home opener and we played two-thirds of a game a man down, and we still came back to score two goals on them,” Vermes said to the Kansas City Star. “If that doesn’t tell you something about the fight this team has, nothing will.”  The Fire had 12 attempts at goal to Sporting’s 7, and put 7 on target to 5 for KC.  “Not once was there anything in our favor throughout the course of the 90-minute match,” Vermes said. “Everything was against us. It’s hard when you are playing 10 against 11, and you’re just fighting all day long against everything. It got to the point where it was just absolutely ridiculous.”  With 5 goals scored through 2 games, Sporting KC is tied atop the offensive table along with Real Salt Lake. But SKC has also allowed a league-high 5 goals, along with LA Galaxy and Portland.  "We had to take advantage of those chances and when the first goal came, maybe they got a little nervous," Sporting captain Davy Arnaud said to the Chicago Tribune. "We didn't get our heads down and feel sorry for ourselves. The game wasn't over. In the end they were hanging on a little bit."  With center back Júlio César ruled out late in the week after suffering a laceration to his foot that required 18 stitches, Roger Espinoza moved into central defense and Scott Lorenz made his MLS debut at right back.  “I think they did a serviceable job,” Vermes said. “Giving up goals the way we did, it was just a lack of cohesiveness at times for them.”  Teal Bunbury made his season debut after missing First Kick with a dislocated elbow, and scored his first goal of the season. Bunbury scored 5 goals in his rookie season of 2010.

WHITECAPS FC MATCH NOTES MATCH NOTES •

• • • •

This is the first ever match between Whitecaps FC and a team from Kansas (however, in the 1968 NASL, the short-lived Vancouver Royals played Kansas City Spurs three times, with a record of 1-1-1. The final meeting was June 26, 1968 at Empire Stadium, and ended a 2-0 Vancouver win). Both these teams have a 1-1-0 record so far this season. Whitecaps FC's next encounter with Sporting Kansas City is on the road on Saturday, June 25, at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Vancouver have a record of 8W-13L-6T against MLS opposition in all competitions and friendlies dating back to 1998. The Pacific National Exhibition’s Empire Field is a temporary stadium with 21,000-seats in its soccer configuration. It is located on the site of the old Empire Stadium, which from 1974 to 1983 served as the original home of the Whitecaps when they played in the North American Soccer League. Vancouver Whitecaps FC are the 17th team admitted to MLS. This is the league's 16th season, having begun play in 1996. MLS now has 18 teams. In comparison, when Vancouver joined the NASL in 1974, that league was only starting its seventh season, and had 15 teams. Whitecaps FC are only the third MLS expansion team to win their inaugural league match. The others were Chicago in 1998 (finished 20-12 en route to an MLS Cup title) and Seattle in 2009 (12-7-11). Designated Player signing and leading scorer, forward Eric Hassli is suspended for this game after receiving two yellow cards in Whitecaps FC's 0-1 loss away to Philadelphia Union last Saturday. Defender #4 Alain Rochat made the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for week two for his strong play in the 1-0 loss in Philadelphia. Forward #9 Atiba Harris netted the game-winning goal and two assists in his 'Caps debut against Toronto FC two weeks ago. Defender and captain #6 Jay DeMerit is back from international duty with the US national team where he played in a 1-1 draw against Argentina in East Rutherford, New Jersey and a 0-1 loss to Paraguay in Nashville, Tennessee this past Tuesday. DeMerit came out of the game in the 41st minute against Paraguay with a slight strained groin.. Defender #2 Michael Boxall is also back from international duty, having earned his first call-up to the full New Zealand squad for a 1-1 draw away to China in a friendly. Winger Russell Teibert is away with Canada's U-20 squad at the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Guatemala. Teibert set up both of Canada's goals in a 2-1 win over Guadeloupe on Monday to open the competition. Forward Omar Salgado is with the USA U-20 squad for the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Guatemala. The 17-yearold is the youngest player on the US team by more than six months. Salgado played 20 minutes as a sub in the USA's 4-0 win over Suriname on Tuesday. He is one of eight MLS players on the US team. Salgado was recently cleared by FIFA to play for Whitecaps FC this season without having to wait until he turns 18. Forward #23 Tan Long turned 23 on Friday. He became the first Chinese-born player to appear in MLS history last Saturday in Philadelphia when he subbed in at 88'. In 11 preseason matches this year, Whitecaps FC had a record of 4W-5L-2D. Vancouver's final preseason match was a 1-0 loss to defending MLS champion Colorado Rapids at Vancouver's Empire Field in a closed-door friendly. Last season in the United States Soccer Federation Division-2, Vancouver finished with a record of 10W-5L-15T, good for fifth place. The Whitecaps lost in the playoff semi-finals to Puerto Rico Islanders 2-0 on aggregate in extra time. This is Vancouver's 36th season of professional soccer, and 25th consecutive season. The Whitecaps are the longest running pro soccer club in US and Canadian history. Head coach Teitur Thordarson is a former Iceland international and has 20 years of pro European coaching experience, including eleven in Norway's top flight, and was head coach of Estonia's National Team (1996-99).

KANSAS CITY NOTES •

• • •

• •

Formerly known as Kansas City Wizards, the team was renamed Sporting Kansas City last November, in recognition of the sporting culture of the Kansas City area. European clubs often have the word sporting, athletic, or equivalent at the start of their name, with soccer just one facet of a multi-sport organisation (eg Sporting Lisbon, Sporting Gijon, SC Braga, Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid, SS Lazio). Kansas City are an original member of MLS, having started in 1996. This is their 16th season. Designated player Omar Bravo is suspended for this game after the Mexican striker was sent off in last weekend's 3-2 defeat in Chicago. Goalkeeper Eric Kronberg has unpleasant memories of playing against Whitecaps FC in 2006 when he was on loan with Miami FC in the USL First Division. In an August 6, 2006, encounter in Miami, Kronberg left the game on a stretcher at 32' after a collision with Vancouver's David Testo, who scored on the play to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead. Whitecaps FC went on to win the game 3-2. Kronberg and Miami then faced Vancouver in the first round playoffs, and was beaten for six goals over two games in Whitecaps FC's 6-1 aggregate win (4-1 in Vancouver and 2-0 in Miami). Defender #24 Scott Lorenz was with NSC Minnesota Stars of USSF Division-2 last season, playing twice against Whitecaps FC in Minnesota, and watching from the bench in a game at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium. Forward #9 Teal Bunbury is the son of former Canadian international star striker Alex Bunbury. Though born in Hamilton, ON, Teal Bunbury has lived most of his life in the US and plays for the US national team.

When last they met... Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between Sporting Kansas City and the expansion Whitecaps. Vancouver joined MLS in 2011 along with the Portland Timbers, becoming the second Canadian team in the League. The Montreal Impact will join next season. Sporting Kansas City are 1-2-2 all-time in MLS games in Canada, with all five matches coming against Toronto FC. The lone win came on April 28, 2007 in a 1-0 victory at BMO Field. Sporting KC will welcome Vancouver to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 25th to complete the season series.

Kansas City Connections • Vancouver Whitecaps defender Jonathan Leathers spent the first three seasons of his MLS career in Kansas City from 20082010, after being drafted 25th overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. Leathers appeared in 38 games including postseason, starting 29, and recorded his only career point on October 23, 2010 in a 4-1 win over San Jose. • Vancouver Whitecaps goalkeeper Joe Cannon, then playing for the Colorado Rapids started both legs of the 2003 Western Conference semifinals against Kansas City as KC advanced 3-1 on aggregate. • Cannon and Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara were teammates for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2008. • Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler was college teammates at Notre Dame with Whitecaps midfielder Jeb Brovksy and defender Bilal Duckett from 2007-2008. • Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Shea Salinas and Sporting Kansas City defender Shavar Thomas were teammates for the Philadelphia Union in 2010. • Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Michael Nanchoff and Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury were college teammates at Akron from 2008-2009.

sporting kansas city headlines BRAVO ON SUSPENSION | Sporting Kansas City striker Omar Bravo will be unavailble for Saturday’s match after being sent off in the first half of the team’s 3-2 loss at Chicago last Saturday. Bravo was named MLS Player of the Week after scoring two goals, including the game-winner, in his debut against Chivas USA in week one. Bravo joined KC as one of the most decorated players in Chivas Guadalajara history, leaving as the club’s second all-time leading scorer, and is a well-known member of the Mexico National Team. Bravo has scored 16 goals for Mexico in 65 appearances, including two goals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

KAMARA READY TO RETURN | Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara will be available for selection by Manager Peter Vermes after representing Sierra Leone on Sunday in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Niger. Kamara earned his seventh international appearance, playing 15 minutes as a second-half substitute in the team’s 3-1 loss. Kamara is coming off a career year, scoring a team-high 10 goals and six assists in 2010. Both marks were personal career-highs for Kamara, now in his sixth year in MLS. He currently leads MLS in assists with tallies on both of Omar Bravo’s goals against Chivas USA in week one, including the game-winning assist in the 3-2 victory. THOMAS CAPTAINS JAMAICA | Sporting Kansas City veteran defender Shavar Thomas is also returning from international duty after captaining Jamaica in a pair of friendlies. Jamaica fell 2-0 to Venezuela last Friday but rebounded with a 3-2 away victory over El Salvador on Tuesday. Thomas, in his ninth MLS season, played the full 90 in both matches and has now made more than 30 appearances for Jamaica, ranked No. 48 in the latest FIFA rankings. BUNBURY RETURNS WITH A BANG | Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury scored on his 2011 debut last Saturday in his return from a dislocated elbow suffered during pre-season. Bunbury entered as a halftime replacement for midfielder Craig Rocastle and scored his first goal of the season in the 72nd minute. Bunbury intercepted a pass from Chicago Fire defender Gonzalo Segares and slotted his shot past goalkeeper Sean Johnson for the game’s final goal. The fourth overall draft pick in the 2010 SuperDraft out of Akron, Bunbury enjoyed a standout rookie season with five goals and two assists in 26 appearances. He also became the youngest player in Kansas City history to record an assist at 20 years, 77 days in Kansas City’s 2-1 loss at D.C. United on May 5. His five goals last season were the most by a KC rookie since Scott Sealy scored nine times in 2005. During the offseason, Bunbury made his international debut for the U.S. Men’s National Team in a friendly against South Africa in November and scored in his second appearance on a penalty kick against Chile at The Home Depot Center in January. SAPONG SHOWS PROMISE | Sporting Kansas City striker C.J. Sapong scored in the second minute of his first ever professional match in week one, powering a shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton under 1 minute, 45 seconds into the season opener. It goes into the MLS record books as the fastest goal ever scored by a rookie who started in their debut, besting the mark set by teammate Michael Harrington who scored in the third minute of his debut in 2007. Sapong, selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft out

of James Madison University, earned the start again last Saturday at Chicago, playing the full 90 minutes. STOJCEV SIGNING | Sporting Kansas City’s most recent addition is Serbian midfielder Milos Stojcev. The 24-year-old started each of the team’s first two matches, playing 89 minutes as an attacking midfielder alongside captain Davy Arnaud in Sporting KC’s 3-2 victory over Chivas USA and then starting in the right forward position in last week’s 3-2 loss at Chicago. Stojcev was a product of the Red Star Belgrade youth academy and has played in the Serbia SuperLiga since debuting at age 19 in 2006. He has appeared in the UEFA Cup, including an appearance against Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam while with his previous club, FK Borac Cacak. CESAR AT CENTERBACK | Sporting Kansas City signed former Real Madrid and A.C. Milan central defender Julio Cesar late in the 2011 pre-season. The 32-year-old boasts an impressive resume, that includes tenures at top teams across the world after being signed by Real Valladolid in Spain at age 17. He was then picked up by Real Madrid in 1999 and helped the club advance to the UEFA Champions League final. Cesar went on to feature for A.C. Milan, Real Sociedad, Benfica, Austria Wien, Bolton Wanderers, Tigres UANL, Olympiacos, FC Dinamo Bucuresti, Gaziantepspor and most recently, Maritimo Funchal. ROOKIE CLASS | In addition to Sapong, two other 2011 draft picks are on Sporting Kansas City’s current roster. Defender Konrad Warzycha, the son of Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha, was taken in the third round of the SuperDraft and defender Mike Jones was picked up in the Supplemental Draft out of Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. Two other young MLS newcomers were signed in the offseason, as Sporting Kansas City signed defender Kevin Ellis as their second Home Grown Player out of the Sporting KC Juniors academy and

also signed defender Scott Lorenz, who spent his first professional season playing with the NSC Minnesota Stars of USSF D2 in 2010. Lorenz made his MLS debut last Saturday, playing 84 minutes at left back in the club’s 3-2 loss at Chicago. ROAD TRIP | Sporting Kansas City will open the season with ten straight regular season away matches while the final touches are put on LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, the team’s new state-of-theart, $200 million venue. It is believed to be the longest stretch of away games in MLS history. Kansas City is 60-121-51 all-time away from home, and went 4-8-3 on the road in 2010.

upcoming milestones Captain Davy Arnaud is 7th on the MLS all-time fouls suffered chart, with 500 fouls against. He leads KC in all-time fouls suffered and is three shy of Brian McBride on the MLS list for sixth...Arnaud has played 220 games in his MLS and KC career, and is four shy of tying Nick Garcia for 2nd on Sporting Kansas City’s all-time chart. Arnaud could move to the top of the list by the end of 2011, as he sits 17 games played back of Kerry Zavagnin for the club’s all-time mark of 237..Of the 220 games played, Arnaud has started 199 regular season matches and his next start will break a tie with Preki for fourth on the team’s all-time chart. An injury-free season could also see Arnaud climb to the top of that chart, needing 29 more starts to match Zavagnin’s 228 all-time...Arnaud is currently tied with Josh Wolff for second on the team’s all-time goal scoring list with 43 career strikes...Arnaud is also fourth on the team’s all-time game-winning goals chart with ten over his nine MLS seasons. His next game-winner will match Wolff for third all-time....Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen begins the 2011 season tied with Mike Ammann for fourth most shutouts in team history with 10...Nielsen is also sixth on the club’s all-time charts with 87 saves, eight shy of Bo Oshoniyi for the fifth position...
