SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs LA GALAXY LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. April 7, 2012 (WEEK 5, MLS Game #40) 3 p.m. CT (ESPN/Deportes) The league’s only team still with a perfect record, Sporting Kansas City put their streak on the line when the defending MLS champion LA Galaxy visit Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday afternoon. Sporting became the seventh team in MLS history to start a season with four wins in four games, in a 1-0 win at Chivas USA last weekend. The Galaxy went down to a second home defeat for the year, falling 3-1 to the New England Revolution. REFEREE: Jorge Gonzalez. KC has won just once at home vs. LA in the last seven years – a 2-0 win Sept. 13, 2008.  The Galaxy hadn’t defeated Kansas City at home in two seasons, before their 4-1 win last year.  Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. LA: P4 W1 L1 D2 … Bruce Arena vs. KC: P20 W6 L8 D6 SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City made it four-for-four to start the 2012 season, defeating Chivas USA 1-0 on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. Sporting have 12 points from 4 matches to lead the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came in the 47th minute. SKC's Graham Zusi fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar. The deflection fell back to the midfielder, and Zusi headed it across the goalmouth to a waiting C.J. Sapong, who nodded home his third goal of the season.  Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made no changes to the team for a second consecutive match, keeping the team that took a late 2-1 victory against FC Dallas at Livestrong Sporting Park  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Roger Espinoza, Julio Cesar - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi (Paulo Nagamura 89), Bobby Convey (Jacob Peterson 73) - C.J. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 72). TEAM NEWS  Sporting Kansas City are the sixth team in MLS history to start a season 4-0-0 – and the third in as many seasons (LA Galaxy in 2010, Real Salt Lake in 2011). The Galaxy also did in 1996 and 1998, while D.C. United did it in 1997.  “It’s good to be 4-0, it’s better than to be 0-4 that’s for sure, but I think for us it’s really just maintaining the idea that we have 30 games left],” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “ … I’m not making any disrespectful comments to you guys [in the media]. From your point of view, I understand it. But for us, there’s so much more we have to accomplish as we move forward.”  Sporting recorded their third shutout in four games on the season. With one goal allowed, SKC is tied with the San Jose Earthquakes for the second-best defensive record in MLS through four weeks. Only Vancouver Whitecaps FC, with 360 shutout minutes to start the season, is better.  “That shows we’ve been organized,” Vermes said, “and have made a good commitment to making sure we don’t give anything away.”

Sporting KC’s Graham Zusi recorded his MLS-leading fifth assist in the 1-0 win against Chivas USA. He has recorded an assist in every game this season; the four-game streak matches the longest of the season a year ago, and is four games shy of the all-time MLS record (Martín Machon, Miami, 7/19-9/9/2000). C.J. Sapong scored his third goal of the season in the place where he netted his first as a pro – also against Chivas USA. When Sapong has scored a goal for Sporting, they are 8-0-0. “It feels amazing, we probably haven’t played to our fullest potential yet, but we’re still grinding out those wins and that’s a good sign,” Sapong said. “So hopefully we’ll just keep riding that and then by the middle of the season be playing our best soccer.” The LA match is the first of back-to-back home games against the top of the Western Conference over the past few seasons. Real Salt Lake comes to Livestrong Sporting Park next weekend. “When you go away from home, I think a lot of teams’ objective is to drive the game. We told ourselves that we didn’t want to go into the game exposing ourselves,” said Vermes. “There’s no reason for us to drive [the Chivas] game, they had to come at us, so it was more we let them have the ball were they had it. But I thought our lines, not only from east to west but north to south, were very compact and we didn’t give them a lot of chance to play through us.”

LA GALAXY The LA Galaxy came back after a week off and crashed to another home defeat, this time a 3-1 decision to the New England Revolution on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. The Galaxy are tied for eighth place in the Western Conference with 3 points from 3 games. LAST MATCH  The Revolution were two goals up within the opening quarter-hour. Shalrie Joseph found Kelyn Rowe in the penalty area with a pinpoint cross from the left flank. Galaxy 'keeper Josh Saunders parried Rowe's first attempt in alone at close range, but the rookie buried the rebound.  Then in the 13th minute, Kevin Alston sent in a rolling pass from the right and found Chris Tierney on the left side of the area, and the defender ripped a low shot past Saunders.  The Revs put the game on ice in the 65th minute. Ryan Guy flighted in a cross from the right to Saer Sene, who got between defenders at the back post and found enough room to head home his second goal in as many games.  Robbie Keane cut into the lead in the 78th minute when Edson Buddle played him a brilliant through ball. Keane broke through the New England defense, danced around goalkeeper Matt Reis and slipped it into the back of the net.  Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena made two changes to the team that recorded a 3-1 home win against D.C. United at The Home Depot Center. Paolo Cardozo and Marcelo Sarvas came into the midfield, in place of Landon Donovan and Mike Magee.  LA GALAXY (4-4-2): Josh Saunders - Sean Franklin, A.J. DeLaGarza, Andrew Boyens, Todd Dunivant - Paolo Cardozo (Chad Barrett 71), Juninho, David Beckham (Michael Stephens 46), Marcelo Sarvas (Mike Magee 46) - Edson Buddle, Robbie Keane. TEAM NEWS  The Galaxy have allowed seven goals in three MLS games at The Home Depot Center after the 3-1 loss Saturday to New England. They allowed just eight at home in all of the 2011 league season, and allowed more than one goal in a home game just once, a span stretching across 23 games in all competitions.  “You still can’t concede goals like [we did vs. New England] regardless if you have two weeks off or three days off or two days off,” striker Robbie Keane said. “We can’t be conceding goals the way we’ve conceded them. We have to rectify that because the goals we’re conceding are similar to the first games.”  The Galaxy hit the road in league play for the first time this season with the trip to Kansas City. They’ve lost twice in three MLS games, and three times in all competitions, at The Home Depot Center.  “We knew how good we were last year and we knew that teams feared us last year,” Galaxy defender Sean Franklin said. “I don’t think no one fears us this year. Teams are coming in here to our home, which they didn’t do last year, and beat us and that’s something that we can’t do. The positive about it is that we have 30something games left in our season but we’ve got to get things right.”  A year ago, the Galaxy won just four times in their opening 11 league matches. The difference was they lost just twice in those games, before winning 15 of their final 23 MLS contests.  “Every year you start off and things are a little bit rusty,” defender Todd Dunivant said. “We didn’t start off last year well, either. We need to correct those things and get better, and we will.”  For the first time since coming to the Galaxy, David Beckham was taken off for a substitute before the hour mark. He and midfielder Marcelo Sarvas were exchanged at halftime for Michael Stephens and Mike Magee.  “Felt we needed to make a change in the midfield,” Arena said. “Purely a coach’s decision. I couldn’t change 11 players, that’s what I told the team at halftime. If I had 11 substitutions I would have considered that … Hopefully he’s ready to be part of the next game. I’m sure he’s not pleased about it but that’s not the issue in

the game. The issue for the game was 11 players for New England soundly outplayed the 11 players for the Galaxy.” Landon Donovan was not available for the match after suffering from tightness in his right quadriceps. He is listed as questionable for the SKC match. “We have to get through the rest of the week. That’s the bottom line. I expect he’ll be ready to play, though,” Arena said. “ … Like any team, it’s important to have your best players on the field. We’re a better team with Landon on the field. We’re hopeful he will be back on Saturday."

Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | April 7th, 2012 vs LA Galaxy | www.SportingKC.com When last they met...

Noteworthy milestones...

Sporting Kansas City and LA Galaxy’s last meeting concluded in a 2-2 draw at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on September 5, 2011. In front of a record-setting crowd of 20,512 fans, Sporting Kansas City rallied in the 92nd minute to even the score at two’s courtesy of Omar Bravo’s penalty kick goal.

The Galaxy started the scoring in the 25th minute when Sean Franklin first-time volleyed a pass from teammate Omar Gonzalez. SKC got on the board in the 72nd minute on a quirky sequence. Zusi’s corner kick made its way beyond the far post onto the laces of C.J. Sapong. Sapong’s volley bounced off the back of Davy Arnaud’s head and perfectly aligned for Julio Cesar to volley it into the back of the net.

However, Sporting’s equalizer was short lived as it was Franklin again who put the Galaxy on top. David Beckham connected with Franklin on the right side of the area which triggered Nielsen to step off his line. This action allowed Franklin to slot the ball underneath Nielsen to force Kansas City to chase the game for the second time in the match. As the time winded down and chances were firing just wide of target, pulling one back began to look slimmer and slimmer for a high pressuring Kansas City side. Until the second minute of added time when Galaxy defender Frankie Hejduk was whistled for a hand ball. Omar Bravo stepped up to take the kick and calmly placed his shot to the goalkeeper’s left to even the score at two a piece just minutes before the final whistle.

Sporting Kansas City becomes the third team in MLS history to win four MLS matches in regulation to open a season, along with the LA Galaxy (1996, 2010) and Real Salt Lake (2011). A win on Saturday would be the first time since Major League Soccer’s inaugural season in 1996 that a club has won their first five matches in regulation. Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi leads all MLS players with five assists in 2012, recording an assist in each of the team’s first four matches. He’s played a part in every game-winning goal so far this season for Sporting KC, assisting on three and scoring another. Only 22 players in MLS history have recorded assists in five or more consecutive regular season matches. The only player in MLS history to record an assist in five straight matches to start a season was D.C. United’s Marco Etcheverry in 1999. Teal Bunbury and C.J. Sapong, Sporting Kansas City’s first round selections in the 2010 and 2011 MLS SuperDraft respectively, lead all players taken in their draft classes for goals scored to date. Bunbury has 14 goals in his MLS career after being drafted 4th overall in 2010, while Sapong was MLS Rookie of the Year in 2011 and has eight goals, including a team-high three through four games this season. Sporting Kansas City is a perfect 8-0-0 in matches that C.J. Sapong scores in during his MLS career. Sporting Kansas City has outshot their opponent by 10 or more shots in each of the team’s first four games. The club leads MLS with 81 shots and 30 shots on goal this season. Conversely, Sporting Kansas City leads MLS for fewest shots allowed this season (32). Sunday’s 1-0 win at Chivas USA marked the sixth time in Sporting KC club history to hold a team without a shot in the first half and first such occasion since April 5, 2009. It was the fourth time in team history to hold an opponent without a shot on goal in a match. Sporting KC striker Kei Kamara leads all MLS players with 28 shots and 12 shots on goal in 2012. Sporting Kansas City is tied for the second most home wins in MLS history with 133, trailing only the LA Galaxy (146). Since moving into LIVESTRONG Sporting Park last year, Sporting Kansas City is 11-2-6 at home, which ranks as the second best winning percentage among all MLS teams in their current venue. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning assist will move him into a tie for 10th place on the club’s all-time chart, joining Mark Chung, Matt McKeon, and Sasha Victorine. Likewise, Zusi’s next gamewinning assist will bump his assist tally to 8 moving him into a tie for 5th place with Jack Jewsbury, Mo Johnston, and Kerry Zavagnin. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning goal will move him into a tie for 6th place on the club’s all-time chart, joining Scott Sealy with 7. Sporting Kansas City’s next successful penalty kick will be the 50th in club history. The club has converted 73% of penalties taken. Sporting Kansas City’s next regular season loss will be the 200th in team history. Four clubs have lost 200 or more MLS regular season matches, led by the New York Red Bulls with 217 defeats. Sporting Kansas City has scored 298 goals all-time in the first half of MLS regular season matches. Two more first half strikes and the club will become the seventh MLS club to score 300 or more goals in the opening 45 minutes. Sporting Kansas City’s next goal allowed in the second half will be the 400th given up by the team in the second half in team history. By contrast, the team has allowed 306 goals in the first half of play. 2012 Major Events at Livestrong sporting park

Since the start of the 2006 season, the Galaxy are 3-1-2 in their first road game of the season, including wins in each of the last two years. Last year, LA opened the year with a 1-0 win at Seattle behind a second half goal from Juninho. In 2010, Edson Buddle scored a pair of first half goals to give the Galaxy a 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo at Robertson Stadium. CAPTAIN KEANE: Robbie Keane served as the Galaxy captain for the first time in his career, wearing the armband in place of the injured Landon Donovan, in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to New England. Keane, who is also the captain for Ireland, played the full 90 minutes up front in the game, tallying a game-high five shots and scoring LA’s only goal in the th 78 minute. He now leads the Galaxy in scoring with three goals in three games this season and has five goals and an assist in seven alltime MLS regular season games. Last year, six different players started a game as captain for the Galaxy with David Beckham, Gregg Berhalter, Landon Donovan, Todd Dunivant, Frankie Hejduk and Donovan Ricketts each being named captain at least once. LEAKING GOALS AT HOME: After conceding just eight goals in 17 regular season home games in all of 2011, the Galaxy have already given up seven goals through their first three home games of this season. Real Salt Lake and New England each scored three times at The Home Depot Center, something no team did against LA at home all of last season and just four teams did all season long in all competitions. In 17 regular season home games lasts season, the Galaxy conceded eight goals and kept 10 clean sheets. Toronto FC, who beat LA 2-1 in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal at The Home Depot Center, was the only team to score more than once against the Galaxy in Carson that year with Alan Gordon scoring a pair of second half goals in a 2-2 draw. LA’s current home goals against average of 2.33 is the worst in club history by more than half a goal. The current record for worst GAA at home over the course of an entire season is 1.80, which was set in 2008 when they club gave up 27 goals in 15 home games and a club record 62 goals in 30 games overall. BOUNCING BACK: The Galaxy head to Kansas City this weekend looking to avoid their first two-game losing streak in the league. The club rebounded from their first regular season defeat by beating D.C. United, but will now need to beat Sporting Kansas City, who are a perfect 4-0-0 on the season, including 2-0-0 at home, to avoid their first losing streak in nearly 15 months. Under Bruce Arena, the Galaxy have only ever lost consecutive regular season games three times. They did so once in 2008, a month after Arena replaced Ruud Gullitt as the club’s head coach. They in June 2009, the club followed a 10-game unbeaten streak, during which they went 2-0-8, with a pair of losses to Real Salt Lake at home and at San Jose, only to go 5-0-1 in the following six games.

LA last lost consecutive regular season games in August 2010, losing 1-0 at San Jose and then falling at home to Kansas City by a 2-0 scoreline with Davy Arnaud and Jimmy Conrad scoring on either side of halftime. Following those losses, the Galaxy closed the season with a 5-2-1 record to clinch the Supporters’ Shield for the first time since 2002. SIMILAR SCORELINES: All three of the Galaxy’s regular season games this year have finished with identical 3-1 scorelines. LA opened the season with a 3-1 home loss to Real Salt Lake on March 10 before beating D.C. United by that same score eight days later. Following a weekend off, the New England Revolution put three past Josh Saunders in a 3-1 Revolution win. Of the 12 goals that have been scored in LA’s three regular season games, only three have been scored in the first half, including two in a three minute stretch for New England last weekend. Robbie Keane’s goal just before the start of first half stoppage time is LA’s fastest goal in the regular season so far this season. Last year LA scored 19 first half goals in the regular season, including four in the opening 15 minutes of games. However, outside of the MLS Cup Playoffs, LA have not scored a goal in the opening 15 minutes in all competitions since Adam Cristman gave his side a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into their Champions League opener against Motagua on August 16, 2011. MCBEAN CALLED IN: Galaxy forward Jack McBean has been called into the U.S. Under-20 National Team by head coach Tab Ramos for their upcoming camp in Portland, Ore. The camp will run from April 916 with the U.S. facing the University of Portland on Thursday, April 12 and then playing one additional game on Sunday, April 15 against a yet to be determined opponent. McBean is currently in Spain with the Galaxy Academy, taking part in the Real Sociedad XXVII Youth Invitational Tournament. He scored a goal in LA’s lone exhibition game ahead of the start of that tournament, a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday. He will remain in Spain for the Galaxy’s three Group A games of that tournament before returning to the U.S. in time for the start of the U.S. U-20 camp. He will be joined in that camp by Galaxy Academy defender Jeffrey Payeras. A native of Hawthorne, Calif., Payeras made one appearance for the Galaxy in the Reserve League last season. He has appeared in 14 games for the Galaxy U-18’s in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, helping that team to a 13-1-3 record in all competitions while allowing just 12 goals in those 17 games. THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE: Jorge Gonzalez will serve as the referee for Saturday’s game between the Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City. This is the first time this season that Gonzalez will officiate a Galaxy game, having done so twice last season. A veteran official, Gonzalez was in charge of LA’s 1-0 win at New England on May 28, 2011 as well as the 3-1 loss at Houston in the regular season finale on October 23. He called a total of 59 fouls in those two games, splitting them evenly with 29 on the Galaxy and 30 on the opposition. He also handed out five yellow cards in those games, giving one each to David Beckham and Jovan Kirovski while also showing three to Houston players in that game. He will be assisted on Saturday by Adam Wienckowski and Brian Poeschel while Michael Kennedy will serve as the fourth official.
