COLUMBUS CREW vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY COLUMBUS CREW STADIUM, Columbus, Ohio 7:30 p.m. ET (ONN; KSMO) April 16, 2011 (WEEK 5; MLS Game 44) The Columbus Crew are looking to extend their unbeaten run when they play host to the Sporting Kansas City road show when the clubs meet Saturday evening at Crew Stadium. After a First Kick loss, the Crew are undefeated in three, last a scoreless draw at Chivas USA. Sporting are returning to action after a weekend off, their last match a remarkable 3-3 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC. REFEREE: Juan Guzman. Kansas City won for the first time in Columbus since 2006; the Crew have won their last three league games at Kansas City. Kansas City’s victory last July 14 was its first against Columbus since a 3-2 win Sept. 15, 2007, at Arrowhead Stadium. The Crew won five of the six intervening games (with one draw). K.C. concludes its CommunityAmerica Ballpark history against Columbus with three losses in three games there. Coaches record: Robert Warzycha v KC: P6 W5 L1 T0 … Peter Vermes vs. CLB: P2 W1 L1 T0 COLUMBUS CREW The Columbus Crew extended their unbeaten streak to three matches, reaching a scoreless draw with Chivas USA on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. The Crew have 5 points from 4 games on the season, in a four-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH Each goalkeeper made two saves, saving the best for late in the match. In the 74th minute, Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy tipped aside Eddie Gaven's breakaway chance at full stretch. Chivas USA nearly took the lead five minutes later, but Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer was well positioned to stop Nick LaBrocca free chance. Hesmer later stopped a last-minute header from Chivas defender Heath Pearce. Crew head coach Robert Warzycha made one change to the team that defeated FC Dallas 2-0 at Crew Stadium. Emilio Renteria came in at striker in place of Andres Mendoza. COLUMBUS CREW (4-2-3-1): William Hesmer - Sebastian Miranda, Chad Marshall, Julius James, Rich Balchan - Kevin Burns, Dejan Rusmir - Eddie Gaven, Emmanuel Ekpo (Dilly Duka 72), Robbie Rogers - Emilio Renteria (Tommy Heinemann 78) TEAM NEWS William Hesmer has not allowed a goal in three games and 283 minutes for the Crew, 90 minutes shy of the club record. “When you talk about three shutouts you have to talk about team defending,” Hesmer said. “We are in the right spots. We are doing a good job on the one-on-ones. Our shape is pretty good. We have some new guys in the back and they’re stepping up. I don’t think the last three games Chivas, Dallas and New York had any clear chances.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
The Crew played to their second scoreless draw in three games in the tie at Chivas USA. The three consecutive shutouts are also one shy of the club record. “We’ve got three new guys in the back,” Hesmer said. “To have it already clicking is impressive. It goes a lot to our communication and our coaching staff. Collectively, we’ve done a whole lot better since the D.C. game in making it tough in the midfield, winning the ball in the right places, not giving it away in the bad places. We’ve made it a lot easier on ourselves.” A significant change just before the start of the season was the insertion of Julius James into central defense in place of the then-injured Andy Iro. “[James] or Iro can step in and do a great job,” Hesmer said. “We have the luxury of playing either one of them. He was a great pick up by our front office.” The last three times the Crew posted three consecutive shutouts, they suffered a loss in the fourth game on each occasion: a 1-0 loss at New York in 2009, a 2-1 defeat at Chivas USA in 2007 and a 3-1 reversal at New England in 2005. Of the Crew’s three goals on the season, two have come from the penalty spot. “I’m happy about the shutout, but I want the goals and a win,” coach Robert Warzycha said. “We had some chances in the second and we should have scored a couple of goals. I know the last few years we haven’t been successful here, so the point is important.”
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City return to league action after a weekend off, their last match a wild 3-3 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 2 at Empire Field. Sporting have 4 points from 3 matches on the season, sitting in a three-way for seventh place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH Just before the halftime whistle, Bunbury opened the scoring, drilling a shot into the top corner from just outside the area. Kansas City doubled their lead on 58 minutes with Milos Stojcev pulling the strings, finding Bunbury cutting in on goal for his second of the match. Five minutes later it was 3-0, as a C.J. Sapong cross found a wide open Kei Kamara in the box for a simple finish. Whitecaps FC finally began to show signs of life in the second half when substitute Nizar Khalfan sped down the left flank and bounced a cross off Harris a yard from goal to cut the deficit to 3-1. The ‘Caps made it a tight finish early in stoppage time when substitute Davide Chiumiento broke down the right and cut it back for Camilo to thump home. Barely 90 seconds later, the Whitecaps leveled with Camilo the hero, heading home a cross from Khalfan. SKC boss Peter Vermes made three changes to the team that defeated Chivas USA 3-2 at The Home Depot Center. Michael Harrington came into the back four for Luke Sassano, Birahim Diop into the midfield for Craig Rocastle, and Omar Bravo started up top for Teal Bunbury. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Michael Harrington, Julio Cesar (Shavar Thomas 82), Matt Besler, Roger Espinoza - Birahim Diop - Davy Arnaud (Stephane Auvray 76), Milos Stojcev (Craig Rocastle 90) - Kei Kamara, Teal Bunbury, C.J. Sapong. TEAM NEWS After their remarkable 3-3 tie at Vancouver in their last match, Sporting Kansas City lead MLS in both average goals scored per game – and allowed – with 2.67 each after three games (eight scored, eight conceded). “We, as a team and as a group, have to take a lot of pride in keeping the ball out of the back of our net,” Davy Arnaud said. “That’s not just a goalkeeper thing or back four thing. That’s 11 guys on the field.” Teal Bunbury raised his season haul to three goals with the brace in Vancouver – which came amidst boos from a pro-Canadian crowd, after Bunbury chose to play for the USA internationally ahead of Canada. “I was expecting them to boo me and say whatever,” Bunbury said. “I try to do my thing wherever I’m playing. Scoring those goals would have felt the same if I was scoring them anywhere else.” Mexican international Omar Bravo, who scored twice in his MLS debut, will be out 3-6 weeks after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia injury. “It flared up on him,” Vermes said, “and after a MRI we saw it was a tell-tale sign that he has something that needs to be taken care of.” While Sporting had last weekend off from league play, they did advance in the U.S. Open Cup just three days after the draw in Vancouver. C.J. Sapong’s goal in the third minute of stoppage time led to a 1-0 win against the Houston Dynamo in College Station, Texas. “To me, it was a huge result for us,” manager Peter Vermes said. “The reason being [is] the guys’ reaction from the last game. For them, the whole thing was to make sure that we don’t give up any goals and then be able to lock the game down.” Here’s the SKC team: Eric Kronberg; Roger Espinoza, Shavar Thomas, Matt Besler, Michael Harrington; Luke Sassano (Davy Arnaud 91), Craig Rocastle (Birahim Diop 76), Milos Stojcev; Omar Bravo (C.J. Sapong 46), Teal Bunbury, Kei Kamara

TODAY’S MATCH The Crew (1-1-2, 5 pts.) returns home to host Eastern-Conference rival Sporting KC (1-1-1, 4 pts.) tonight, on the heels of its scoreless draw with Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center last Saturday, April 9. Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer notched his third consecutive shutout in that game, running his club-record total to 36. Sporting KC had last weekend off from MLS play and enters the match having most recently defeated the Houston Dynamo, 1-0, on April 6 in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifier, with a stoppage-time goal from C.J. Sapong. Its last league game was an exciting 3-3 draw with the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps on April 2. Team leading scorer and former Akron forward Teal Bunbury tallied two goals while current team assist leader and former Crew standout Kei Kamara scored the third goal for KC, which saw its 3-0 lead erased with two stoppage-time goals by the Whitecaps. KC is without designated player Omar Bravo who suffered a sports hernia injury and has been ruled out for three to six weeks. The Black & Gold enters the match in a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with New York, Houston and Toronto. The Crew owns the advantage in the all-time series vs. KC, with a record of 19-17-5, and last season split the series 1-1-0 winning 1-0 in Kansas City on a goal by forward Emilio Renteria and dropping a 1-0 decision at Crew Stadium in July. Next up, the Crew will travel to Toronto for the first leg of the 2011 Trillium Cup at BMO Field on Saturday, April 23, at 4 p.m., before returning home for Vancouver’s first-ever visit to Crew Stadium on April 30. CREW CAPTAIN CHAD MARSHALL NAMED TO TEAM OF THE WEEK THIRD STRAIGHT WEEK Black & Gold captain Chad Marshall was named to the MLSsoccer.com Best XI for the third straight week. Marshall was named for his exceptional performance in helping the Crew secure its third shutout in a row. CREW STADIUM CELEBRATES EARTH DAY In celebration of Earth Day, the Crew has partnered with Keep Columbus Beautiful, Major League Soccer and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation on several environmental and beautification initiatives. During Saturday’s game, thousands of plantable seedlings and eco-guides will be distributed to fans with tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle. In addition, 100% of the electricity used at Crew Stadium in Saturday’s game will be offset using renewable energy wind resources. The carbon dioxide reduction value is the equivalent of more than 130,197 pounds and will support enough wind energy to power an average U.S. home for over eight years. CREW SOCCER ACADEMY’S WIL TRAPP CALLED INTO US U-18 CAMP Crew Soccer Academy and Lincoln, Gahanna standout Wil Trapp has been called into the United States U-18 traininng camp. The 24-man squad includes several MLS prospects and will convene in Portland, Ore., from April 16-24 and will play friendlies against the Portland Timbers, the University of Portland and the University of Washington during the camp. CREW SOCCER ACADEMY 15/16s WIN, 17/18S DRAW AGAINST CLEVELAND INTERNATIONALS The Crew Soccer Academy 15/16s and 17/18s hosted the Cleveland Internationals Academy this weekend at the Crew Training Center at Obetz. The 15/16s strengthened their lead atop the USSF Development Academy Central Conference Great Lakes Division by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. Quinn Miller scored a brace and Tom Granot scored a last minute tally. The 17/18s also came back from a 2-0 deficit by drawing their counterparts 2-2 with stoppage time goals by Brett Elder and Max Reihemann. Next the CSA hosts the Lonestar Soccer Club Academy on Saturday, April 16 at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the Crew Training Center at Obetz. JEFF CUNNINGHAM WATCH With his next goal, Crew forward Jeff Cunningham will become the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, a designation he currently shares with Brian McBride (62). Cunningham enters the match against his most recent former team with 132 career goals scored, which is just one behind all-time MLS leading scorer Jaime Moreno.

sporting kansas city headlines
Kansas City defeated the Columbus Crew for the first time in seven meetings in the two teams last encounter on July 14th, 2010. The 1-0 victory marked the first time KC had walked away from Columbus Crew Stadium with a win since the 2006 season.
BUNBURY BRACE | Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury scored twice in his first start of the 2011 season in KC’s last match at Vancouver. Making his first appearance in Canada since commiting to the U.S. Men’s National Team, the Ontario-native recorded the first multi-goal game of his professional career and now has goals in back-to-back games after also scoring at Chicago in his return from a dislocated elbow suffered during pre-season. While the three goals in two matches are second most in MLS, Bunbury also provided the game-winning assist in overtime of Sporting KC’s 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo last week in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifier.
Rookie striker Teal Bunbury tallied his first MLS goal in the 14th minute for the game-winner, and goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen recorded a career-high seven saves for the shutout. Kansas City’s upset of the then-Eastern Conference leading Crew was only Columbus’ third loss of the season, while it snapped a three-game losing streak for Kansas City.
Kansas City Connections • Columbus Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer served as a backup in Kansas City from 2004-2006 after being drafted 17th overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. He was taken by Toronto FC in the 2006 Expansion Draft prior to being traded to Columbus following the draft. • Columbus Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum is an Overland Park, Kansas native who attended Blue Valley North High School, where he was named an All-American and NSCAA Kansas Player of the Year. • Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara began his MLS career for the Crew as he was taken with the ninth overall pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft and played his first two professional seasons for the black and gold before being traded to San Jose. Kamara made 36 appearances, scoring five goals for Columbus. • Sporting Kansas City defender Roger Espinoza attended Ohio State University in Columbus from 2006-2007, leading the Buckeyes to the NCAA National Championship game in ‘07. • Sporting Kansas City rookie midfielder Konrad Warzycha is the son of Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha. Konrad, out for 6-8 months with a femoral condyle knee defect, was drafted by KC in the 3rd round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft out of Ohio State University. • Sporting Kansas City defender Mike Jones and Columbus Crew goalkeeper Alex Riggs were high school teammates at Fort Zumwalt South High School in St. Peters, Mo. Jones attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, while Riggs played collegiately at Missouri State. •Columbus Crew forward Tom Heinemann attended Rockhurst University in Kansas City from 2006-2008 and was named an NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II All-American as a sophomore and junior. • Columbus Crew Technical Director Brian Bliss was a former player (1998) and assistant coach (2000-2006) in Kansas City and was an interim head coach during the 2006 season, going 4-4-6. • Columbus Crew are owned by The Hunt Sports Group, who originally owned Kansas City from 1996-2006.
The fourth overall draft pick in the 2010 SuperDraft out of Akron, Bunbury enjoyed a standout rookie season with five goals and two assists in 26 appearances. He also became the youngest player in Kansas City history to record an assist at 20 years, 77 days in Kansas City’s 2-1 loss at D.C. United on May 5. His five goals last season were the most by a KC rookie since Scott Sealy scored nine times in 2005. During the offseason, Bunbury made his international debut for the U.S. Men’s National Team in a friendly against South Africa in November and scored in his second appearance on a penalty kick against Chile at The Home Depot Center in January. KAMARA POINT STREAK | Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara also has points in back-to-back games. After recording two assists in the club’s season-opening 3-2 victory at Chivas USA, Kamara missed the team’s second match while with the Sierra Leone National Team for an African Cup of Nations qualifier but picked up right where he left off with his first goal of the 2011 season at Vancouver. Kamara is coming off a career year, scoring a team-high 10 goals and six assists, and has already accumulated four points in two matches this season. Both marks from last season were personal career-highs for Kamara, now in his sixth year in MLS. Kamara has seven appearances for Sierra Leone. STOJCEV AS PLAYMAKER | Sporting Kansas City’s most recent signing, Serbian midfielder Milos Stojcev recorded two assists in KC’s last match at Vancouver. After setting up striker Teal Bunbury in the 58th minute with a well-weighted pass into the penalty area, Stojcev earned his second MLS point four minutes later on a pass to rookie C.J. Sapong, who set up Kei Kamara’s first-time finish. The 24-year-old was a product of the Red Star Belgrade youth academy and played in the Serbia SuperLiga since debuting at age 19 in 2006. He has appeared in the UEFA Cup, including an appearance against Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam while with his previous club, FK Borac Cacak.

CESAR AT CENTERBACK | Sporting Kansas City signed former Real Madrid and A.C. Milan central defender Julio Cesar late in the 2011 pre-season. The 32-year-old boasts an impressive resume, that includes tenures at top teams across the world after being signed by Real Valladolid in Spain at age 17. He was then picked up by Real Madrid in 1999 and helped the club advance to the UEFA Champions League final. Cesar went on to feature for A.C. Milan, Real Sociedad, Benfica, Austria Wien, Bolton Wanderers, Tigres UANL, Olympiacos, FC Dinamo Bucuresti, Gaziantepspor and most recently, Maritimo Funchal. SAPONG’S HEROICS | Sporting Kansas City striker C.J. Sapong scored in the second minute of overtime to lead KC to a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo last Wednesday in a 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifier. KC advances to host the winner of D.C. United vs. New England Revolution for one of Major League Soccer’s two play-in berths for the tournament proper. Sapong has played every minute for Sporting Kansas City in 2011 and scored in the second minute of his first ever professional match, powering a shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton just 1 minute, 45 seconds into the season opener. It goes into the MLS record books as the fastest goal ever scored by a rookie who started in their debut, besting the mark set by teammate Michael Harrington who scored in the third minute of his debut in 2007. Sapong, selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft out of James Madison University also recorded his first professional assist in Sporting Kansas City’s last match on a cross to Kei Kamara in the 62nd minute of the team’s 3-3 draw at Vancouver. ROOKIE CLASS | In addition to Sapong, two other 2011 draft picks are on Sporting Kansas City’s current roster. Defender Konrad Warzycha, the son of Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha, was taken in the third round of the SuperDraft and defender Mike Jones was picked up in the Supplemental Draft out of Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville.
Two other young MLS newcomers were signed in the offseason, as Sporting KC signed defender Kevin Ellis as their second Home Grown Player out of the Sporting KC Juniors academy and also signed defender Scott Lorenz, who spent his first professional season playing with the NSC Minnesota Stars of USSF D2 in 2010. ROAD TRIP | Sporting Kansas City will open the season with ten straight regular season away matches while the final touches are put on LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, the team’s new state-of-theart, $200 million venue. It is believed to be the longest stretch of away games in MLS history. Kansas City is 60-120-52 all-time away from home, and went 4-8-3 on the road in 2010. BRAVO SIDELINED | Sporting Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo suffered a sports hernia injury and underwent surgery on Tuesday. The timetable on his return is three to six weeks based on preliminary reports. Bravo was named MLS Player of the Week after scoring two goals in his MLS debut against Chivas USA in Sporting Kansas City’s season-opening 3-2 victory.
