April 21, 2012 (WEEK 7, MLS Game #62) 7:30 p.m. PT (ROOT NW; KSMO) The Portland Timbers return home looking to end their record losing streak – and stop Sporting Kansas City’s record winning run – when the clubs meet Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. Eric Alexander sent a through ball behind the Galaxy back line and Kris Boyd ran onto it before slotting home with a low shot from just outside the area.  The Galaxy pulled even in the 44th minute. After a flurry of pressure around the Timbers area, Juninho latched onto a half-clearance and hammered a low rocket from beyond the area.  The Galaxy added the exclamation point in stoppage time when David Beckham added another goal to his highlight collection, bending the ball into the top corner from 25 yards out to beat Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins.  Timbers head coach John Spencer made four changes to the team that fell to a 2-1 loss to Chivas USA at JeldWen Field. The Timbers have lost a club-record four consecutive MLS matches after their 3-1 defeat by the LA Galaxy last weekend. “I think I still believe that we have quality, and we have quality to win the games,” said Timbers head coach John Spencer. “For me confidence is obviously a big factor when you have a losing streak and it’s the same the other way when you go on a winning streak and you feel unbeatable. I think we performed at times, played some real good football and it’s unfortunate with a 3-1 scoreline against.” Kris Boyd scored for a second consecutive match, now with three goals in his first MLS season. “I go into every game looking to score a goal,” said Boyd. “Our possession is key. The Galaxy are one of the better clubs in America but no different than any other team. Like I said before the most important thing is to get the three points and we’re disappointed not to get that.” The Timbers have now conceded eight goals in the past three games. Spencer changed both fullback positions for the Galaxy match, giving both Steve Purdy and Mike Chabala their first starts of the season. “Losing can become a habit as well as winning,” Spencer said. “The easiest thing for us to do right now as a coaching staff and as a playing staff is feel sorry for yourself. Odds are they’re going to put it right. And you’ve got to try to pick them up for the game.” The Timbers have also conceded five of their 11 total goals in the final 15 minutes of games. “It’s just as frustrating as the other ones. It’s time to stop talking and just get winning. Eliminate mistakes,” said Darlington Nagbe. This week, the club announced the signing of Sebastián Rincón on loan from Uruguayan first-division side Club Atlético Atenas. Rincón, 18, played in the youth system of Colombian side Deportivo Cali and youth club soccer in the U.S. before starting his professional career in 2010 at the age of 16 with the reserve team of Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe. “Sebastián has been training with us since preseason, and is a young player with tremendous potential,” said Spencer. “He has a good pedigree and possesses good size and athleticism. We are happy to have him and hope to continue his development as a player.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City made it 7-for-7 to start the 2012 season, beginning their Pacific Northwest road trip with a 3-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday evening at BC Place. Sporting have 21 points from 7 matches to lead the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  Sporting took the lead 24 minutes into the game. KC had maintained possession following a corner, and Graham Zusi’s cross found Collin, who headed back to Roger Espinoza. The Honduran international's shot ricocheted off a defender and back into Collin's path who poked the ball across the line from close range.  Kansas City doubled the lead in the 51st minute. Whitecaps FC center back Martin Bonjour, while defending a Matt Besler throw-in, attempted to direct the ball back to goalkeeper Joe Cannon while being pressured by Collin -- only to chest the ball into the corner of the goal.  Fourteen minutes later Kei Kamara sealed the victory for Sporting, finishing a cross from Chance Myers. Kamara started the play by passing the ball out wide to Myers, and the fullback returned the favor for Kamara to flick home at the near post.  The home side got a goal back in the 80th minute. A Camilo shot came back off the bar and rebounded to Sebastien Le Toux to head in from close range, as Sporting 'keeper Jimmy Nielsen was just unable to keep it from crossing the line.  Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made one change to the team that defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 at Livestrong Sporting Park. Paulo Nagamura came into the midfield in place of Julio Cesar.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Paulo Nagamura (Lawrence Olum 77), Roger Espinoza - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Bobby Convey (Jacob Peterson 52) - C.J. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 62). TEAM NEWS  Sporting continue to get closer to the all-time unbeaten record for wins to start a season. The LA Galaxy went 12-0 in 1996, winning the first nine in regulation time (two in all in a shootout), and the 1998 LA Galaxy started 9-0, winning the first game in a shootout.  Sporting are also chasing the record for an unbeaten run to start the season, also 12 games, set by the ’96 LA Galaxy, the 2010 Kansas City Wizards and 2010 LA Galaxy (both 10-0-2).  “One of the biggest things was we were starting to get tired at the end due to the travel and the short turnaround from our Saturday game,” said Sporting manager Peter Vermes. “The good thing was that lately we’ve been in the environment where we’ve been up and teams have thrown a lot at us and today we handled this situation really well.”

Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen saw his shutout streak snapped at 414 minutes with Sebastien Le Toux’s goal 10 minutes from the end, the second-longest in MLS this season (behind Vancouver’s 426-minute stretch to start the season. “The big difference for us tonight was the play of Jimmy (Nielsen). His saves at the end were tremendous and I think at the end of the day that’s what saved us because the last 10 minutes they were really on us,” said Vermes. Coming into the match, Nielsen had been called upon to make seven saves total, and had gone 315 minutes without seeing a single attempt on target until late in the Real Salt Lake match. Against Vancouver, Nielsen saw a total of 19 shots, seven on frame. "They created some good chances and when they scored it gave them a lot of energy,” said Nielsen. “I kind of had nothing to do the last couple of games until today. We kind of knew that it would be tough up here today. I prepared myself a little different today. I was pretty sure that I would be in action today. I can have a full paycheck next time." With Julio Cesar injured, Vermes made a change in his lineup for the first time since the second game of the season when KC took on New England at home. “Obviously, he’s an important guy for the team,” Vermes said ofJulio Cesar. “But at the same time – as I’ve told you guys millions of times – the biggest thing for me when we have muscle injuries, we need to shut a guy down and make sure he’s 100 percent before we bring him back out.” Collin has not scored in back-to-back games, while Kamara hit for the fourth time in six games. “We had to get something going on the counter. We were in good places on the field to get the own goal, and then for Kei to get in there and get on the end of that pass and finish it off, that was huge,” Vermes said.

HEAD COACH JOHN SPENCER Appointed the first head coach in the club’s MLS history on Aug. 10, 2010, John Spencer completed his first season as head coach of the 2011 Portland Timbers by guiding the team to the brink of the MLS Cup playoffs. Overall, he has record of 12-18-10 as the head coach of the Timbers. A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Spencer led the Timbers through a successful opening MLS campaign, earning a 9-5-3 record at home - tied for third-best in the league - and nearly clinching a spot in the playoffs. The third-youngest head coach in MLS for the 2011 season, Spencer helped one of the league’s youngest rosters navigate the rigors of its first 34-game regular season while staying competitive in the Western Conference. Under Spencer’s tutelage, the Timbers became the first MLS expansion club to win their first five home games, and the first team to begin its home season with three straight wins since 1996. Portland’s 11 wins in 2011 ranks tied for fourth all-time among expansion teams for wins in a season. Prior to joining the Timbers, Spencer served as an assistant coach for the Houston Dynamo under head coach Dominic Kinnear for nearly five seasons (2006-2010). He helped lead the Dynamo to back-toback MLS Cup championships in 2006 and 2007 as well as four consecutive playoff appearances. From 2006-08, Spencer also coached the Dynamo Reserves, guiding Houston’s reserve squad to the 2008 MLS Reserve Division championship. During an 18-year playing career, Spencer suited up for such noted English clubs as Chelsea, Everton and Queens Park Rangers, and Scotland’s Glasgow Rangers. As a striker, he most notably amassed 43 goals with English-power Chelsea from 1992-96. In MLS, Spencer starred for the Colorado Rapids from 2001-04, becoming the only player to be the team’s MVP and scoring leader in the same season more than once. The two-time MLS All-Star (2001, 2003) captained the Rapids to three straight playoff appearances from 2002-04. A two-time MLS Best XI selection, Spencer was inducted to the Rapids Gallery of Honor on Aug. 30, 2009. Spencer, 41, was considered the Rapids’ undeniable leader due to his skill and work ethic. During his time with Colorado, he played in 88 games and his 37 goals ranks among franchise career leaders. Spencer led the Rapids in goals scored twice, set the club’s single-season mark for goals (14) and career mark for assists (17). At the international level, Spencer earned 14 caps with the Scotland National Team from 1994-97. He earned his first cap for Scotland against Russia on November 16, 1994, in Glasgow. During his international career, Spencer played against England at Wembley Stadium in the 1996 European Championship. Spencer and his wife, Amanda, have three children, Chantelle, Brad and Dylan, and live in the Portland metro area. One of Spencer’s favorite goal celebrations was to kiss his wedding ring in honor of his family. BOYD NETS GOAL IN SECOND STRAIGHT GAME, BUT TIMBERS LOSE 3-1 TO LA GALAXY A goal and an assist from forward Landon Donovan combined with late goals in the final minutes of the match by midfielders Juninho and David Beckham led the LA Galaxy to a 3-1 win over the Portland Timbers in front of 22,143 at The Home Depot Center on Saturday night. The Timbers struck first on forward Kris Boyd’s third goal of the season in the 23rd minute to stake a 1-0 lead. The Galaxy responded with three unanswered goals, starting with the equalizing goal just before halftime from Donovan. Juninho provided the game-winner in the 83rd minute and Beckham added an insurance goal in second-half stoppage time on a strike from distance to lift the Galaxy to a 3-1 victory. Boyd scored in his second straight match, midfielder Eric Alexander was credited with an assist and goalkeeper Troy Perkins recorded a season-high six saves for the Timbers (1-4-1, 4pts). Portland lost its fourth straight match. TIMBERS FORCED TO CONTINUE SHUFFLING BACK LINE Through six matches, the Timbers have had to shuffle the starting four defenders several times due to injuries. Without the services of centerbacks David Horst (R Hip surgery) and Futty Danso (L foot fracture), as well as injuries to Hanyer Mosquera (concussion and orbital fracture) on March 24 against New England and Rodney Wallace (L ankle sprain) on April 7, Portland has sent out the same starting backline in back-to-back games just twice this season (Palmer-Brunner-Mosquera-Wallace, March 17 and March 24 and Palmer-Brunner-Jean-Baptiste-Wallace, March 31 and April 7). Seven defenders have seen playing time for the Timbers this season.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY AT PORTLAND TIMBERS SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2012 TIMBERS VS. SPORTING KANSAS CITY Saturday’s match is the third meeting between Portland and Sporting Kansas City and the only regular-season meeting between the two sides during the 2012 season. Last year, Sporting KC was one of only three teams to take all six points from the Timbers. On July 2, goals from C.J. Sapong and Aurelien Collin in the first 20 minutes provided enough cushion as Sporting KC came away with a 2-1 win at sold-out JELD-WEN Field. Darlington Nagbe pulled one back for the Timbers on the stroke of halftime with his first career goal. The goal reached No. 1 on ESPN Sportscenter’s Top 10 plays of the night and, eventually, was selected as the MLS AT&T Goal of the Year. On a deflected corner, the ball came to Nagbe at the top corner of the penalty box. Nagbe juggled the ball twice before unleashing a deft volley to the far corner of the goal. The loss pushed Portland’s winless streak to six games. In the away fixture on Aug. 17, midfielder Graham Zusi scored twice in the first half and rookie Soony Saad scored an insurance goal in the 73rd minute of a 3-1 win at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Forward Bright Dike scored his first career MLS goal in the 81st minute. PERKINS WITHIN REACH OF MLS CAREER MILESTONES Goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who made his 35th consecutive start for the Timbers last weekend, is one win shy of his 50th career MLS victory; his 49 wins ranks among the league’s top 15 all-time. Perkins earned nine wins in goal for the Timbers during the 2011 season. Last season’s nine wins ranks third-best all-time for Perkins, who recorded 15-win and 16-win seasons in 2006 and 2007, respectively. TIMBERS EXTEND HOME SELLOUT STREAK TO 20 MATCHES The Timbers have extended their home sellout streak to 20 matches following a match against Chivas USA on April 7. After selling out all 17 league home matches during the 2011 MLS season, the Timbers expanded the seating capacity of JELDWEN Field to 20,438 (up from 18,627) for the 2012 season. TIMBERS ACQUIRE SEBASTIÁN RINCÓN ON LOAN FROM URUGUAYAN CLUB The Timbers have acquired forward Sebastián Rincón on loan for the 2012 season from Uruguayan first-division side Club Atlético Atenas. Rincón, 18, played in the youth system of Colombian side Deportivo Cali and youth club soccer in the United States before starting his professional career in 2010 at the age of 16 with the reserve team of Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe. Rincón is the son of recognized, former Colombian Nation Team player Freddy Rincón, who competed in three FIFA World Cups and had an 18-year professional career. A PLACE TO CALL HOME After spending the first three weeks of their inaugural 2011 MLS campaign on the road, the final stages of renovation work at JELD-WEN Field were completed in time for the Timbers to debut their impressively refurbished home on a national stage. The Timbers, in front of sold-out crowds of 18,627, scored seven goals on their way to opening up the stadium with a pair of wins over the Chicago Fire and FC Dallas in mid-April. JELD-WEN Field underwent a $40 million renovation that transformed the iconic downtown Portland venue into one of the most unique and intimate soccer venues in North America. JELD-WEN Field improvements include the addition of a new eastside seating section that will house the new KeyBank Club and premium club seats, the Widmer Brothers Southern Front deck behind the south goal that will provide unique vantage points ideal for casual group seating, a state-of-the-art video board that features high-definition technology for an enhanced fan experience and a new FieldTurf playing surface well-suited for the variety of sporting and community events that will be featured each year at JELD-WEN Field. Phase I of construction, which included foundation work for the new eastside seats, began in early 2010, while renovation on a larger scale began on Sept. 7, 2010, following the end of the Timbers second-division season. JELD-WEN Field, located in the heart of the city, was originally constructed in 1926 and has undergone a number of transformations over the years, none more substantial than the current renovation. The stadium has housed some of the most memorable events in its 85-year life, including presidential visits, an Elvis Presley performance in 1957, Pele’s last official game as a professional and the 2003 Women’s World Cup. It was home to the NASL Timbers from 1975-82 and most recently served as the home grounds for the USL Timbers from 2001-10.

SCOUTING SPORTING KANSAS CITY Eastern Conference-leading Sporting Kansas City became the second team in MLS history to win its first seven matches of the season in regulation, following the 1996 LA Galaxy, who won nine straight to start the season. Head coach Peter Vermes has a squad laden with talent, including midfielder Graham Zusi (the league-leader in assists), and forwards Kei Kamara (4 goals) and C.J. Sapong (3 goals). IN SEARCH OF A POSITIVE RESULT Following a 3-1 loss to the LA Galaxy on April 14, the Timbers have lost four consecutive matches for the first time in the club’s two-year MLS history. Additionally, Portland has lost consecutive games to a Western Conference opponent for the first time since June 4-11 of last season. JEWSBURY FACES FORMER CLUB FOR THE THIRD TIME Midfielder Jack Jewsbury, who spent the first eight years of his professional career with Sporting Kansas City, faces his old club for the third time as a member of the Timbers. Jewsbury, a Joplin, Mo., native, made 195 appearances for SKC from 20032010, registering 14 goals and 20 assists with the team. BOYD, MOSQUERA EARN MLS TEAM OF THE WEEK MENTIONS FOR WEEK 6 For their efforts against the LA Galaxy on April 14, Timbers forward Kris Boyd and defender Hanyer Mosquera earned spots on the MLSsoccer.com Team of the Week for Week 6. Boyd scored a goal in the 23rd minute against the Galaxy, and had a later one called back for offsides. Mosquera, making his first start since March 24, played solidly in defense. ADDITIONAL TIMBERS-SPORTING KANSAS CITY CONNECTIONS Darlington Nagbe and Sporting KC forward Teal Bunbury both played at the University of Akron from 2008-2009. Bunbury (2009) and Nagbe (2010) won the Hermann Trophy in back-to-back seasons. Sporting KC defender Lawrence Olum played two seasons for the Timbers second-division club from 2007-2009. Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | April 21st, 2012 vs Portland Timbers| www.SportingKC.com

When last they met... Sporting Kansas City last met Portland on August 17, 2012 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Graham Zusi earned two first half goals to give SKC the early lead which carried over to a 3-1 victory.

Zusi’s first goal came in the 25th minute when he settled a poor clearance from Portland defender Rodney Wallace and hammered a shot into the back of the net from more than 30 yards out. The midfielder’s second goal of the match came in the 40th minute when he capitalized on Matt Besler’s long throw-in. Besler’s throw connected with KC striker C.J. Sapong, who flicked on the service for Teal Bunbury on the back post. Bunbury’s volley was blocked by Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins, but Zusi was able to bury the rebound off a sliding shot from inside the six-yard box. The third SKC goal was scored by Soony Saad just nine minutes into his MLS debut. Saad’s goal came as a direct result of his highpressure. Timbers defender Eric Brunner attempted to clear the ball and it deflected off Saad, went over the head of Perkins and into the Timber net. However, Portland did manage to get one back in the 81st minute when Bright Dike re-directed a cross from Rodney Wallace to mark the first goal of his MLS career.

Timbers starting center midfielder and team captain Jack Jewsbury began his MLS career in 2003 playing for Kansas City. Jewsbury spent eight years playing for KC before being traded to Portland on March 1, 2012 in exchange for allocation money. Jewsbury scored 14 goals and added 20 assists in his eight seasons with Kansas City and has already reached 50% of those statistics in two seasons with Portland (7G,10A). Timbers midfielder Eric Alexander played collegiate soccer at Indiana University. Jacob Peterson also played for IU although their time spent at the university did not overlap. Timbers starting center back Eric Brunner began his collegiate soccer career at the University of Maryland in 2004 before transferring to Ohio State after his freshman season at UMD. Brunner just missed being teammates with Graham Zusi, who was a freshman at Maryland that following fall. However, Brunner did meet up with another Sporting Kansas City player, Konrad Warzycha at OSU. Warzycha’s freshman season was Brunner’s senior year, as the duo led OSU to the NCAA College Cup Final. The memory that both young players list as the best thus far in their playing careers. Sporting Kansas City’s Roger Espinoza also played for Ohio State in that match scoring the lone goal for the Buckeyes in their 2-1 fall to Wake Forest. Brunner and Espinoza were both named to the 2007 NCAA AllTournament Team at the conclusion of the match. Both Warzycha and Brunner grew up in Dublin, Ohio. In fact, Konrad’s father Robert coached Brunner during his 2010 and 2011 MLS season’s while with the Columbus Crew. Portland midfielder Rodney Wallace played with Sporting’s Graham Zusi at the University of Maryland. Both players helped lead the Terrapins to the NCAA title in 2008. Timbers forward Bright Dike enjoyed a standout career at the University of Notre Dame where he was teammates with Sporting Kansas City players Matt Besler and Michael Thomas. Dike and Besler were both All Big East Team selections for multiple years while Thomas earned the honor his senior year. SKC’s Bobby Convey and Timbers defender David Horst are both born in Pennsylvania. Their hometowns are located just one and a half hours apart. Portland Timbers leading goalscorer Darlington Nagbe spent three collegiate seasons at the University of Akron where he was teammates with Sporting KC striker Teal Bunbury. Bunbury and Nagbe won the Herman Trophy in back-to-back year, 2009 and 2010 respectively. Portland midfielder Sal Zizzo played two seasons at UCLA (2005-2006), before signing with a first division club in Germany. At UCLA, Zizzo was teammates with Sporting Kansas City defender Chance Myers. Both players were originally from California approximately two hours away.

Nagbe’s goal against Sporting Kansas City in the first meeting between the two squads on July 2, 2011 earned AT&T Goal of the Year. Nagbe juggled the ball out of the air before volleying it into the upper-90 past SKC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Sporting Kansas City went on to win the contest 2-1. Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins began his college career at the University of South Florida. Sporting Kansas City 1st round SuperDraft pick Dom Dwyer also played collegiate soccer for the USF, although their time did not overlap.

Sporting Kansas City’s 7-0-0 start in 2012 is the first time since 1996 that a club has earned seven wins in regulation to start their season. In 1998, the Los Angeles Galaxy started 9-0 with the aid of shootout victories. In 1996, the Galaxy earned eight straight wins in regulation to start the season before earning a shootout win over New England and extending that streak to 12-0 to start the season. Sporting Kansas City’s next regular season loss will be the 200th in team history. Four clubs have lost 200 or more MLS regular season matches, led by the New York Red Bulls with 217 defeats. Teal Bunbury and C.J. Sapong, Sporting Kansas City’s first round selections in the 2010 and 2011 MLS SuperDraft respectively, lead all players taken in their draft classes for goals scored to date. Bunbury has 14 goals in his MLS career after being drafted 4th overall in 2010, while Sapong was MLS Rookie of the Year in 2011 and has eight goals, including a team-high three through seven games this season. Sporting Kansas City leads MLS with 113 shots and 39 shots on goal this season. Sporting KC striker Kei Kamara leads all MLS players with 36 shots and 16 shots on goal in 2012. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning assist will move him into a tie for 10th place on the club’s all-time chart, joining Mark Chung, Matt McKeon, and Sasha Victorine. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning goal will move him into a tie with Digital Takawira for fourth on the club’s all-time chart. Sporting Kansas City’s next successful penalty kick will be the 50th in club history. The club has converted 73% of penalties taken. Sporting Kansas City’s win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC set the club’s all-time record for longest regular season winning streak in regulation at nine games, dating back to 2011. The only other time the team had won seven consecutive regular season matches came in 1997 during the MLS shootout era. Nielsen has the lowest goals against average in MLS this season at 0.29. Nielsen has the most wins (7) and shutouts (5) of any MLS goalkeeper. Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes sits atop the team’s all-time coaches chart for best winning percentage (.536, 34-28-21). Sporting Kansas City leads the League with 45 corner kicks in 2012. Sporting Kansas City’s record when Collin scores is 6-0-1. Of Collin’s seven goals, four were game-winners and the other three were game-tying goals.
