#SKCvCOL: BY THE NUMBERS

Sporting Kansas City (2-7-3, 9 pts.) returns home this weekend to take on the Colorado Rapids (4-4-3, 15 pts.) at Children’s Mercy Park, still smarting from Saturday night’s heavy 7-2 defeat against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park. Colorado will be no easy foe, as Robin Fraser’s side are coming off an impressive 2-0 victory over league-leading Los Angeles FC at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday. The two sides met at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Week 3 this season, with the Rapids claiming a 2-0 victory. Former Sporting forward Diego Rubio fired the hosts in front in the first half before Mark-Anthony Kaye added a second shortly after halftime. Sporting took the season series in 2021 by going 1-0-2 over three games. Sporting defeated the Rapids at Children’s Mercy Park on June 23, 2021, cruising to a 3-1 victory. Daniel Salloi scored a first-half brace to put his side in a commanding position before Felipe Hernandez bagged his first-ever MLS goal in the second half. Lalas Abubakar headed home a late consolation for the Rapids. Sporting then visited Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Aug. 7, 2021, earning a welldeserved point following a 0-0 draw with a heavily rotated lineup. The final clash came at Children’s Mercy Park on Aug. 28, with Johnny Russell’s brilliant free kick cancelling out Jonathan Lewis’s controversial opener. SKC leads the all-time series 28-25-18, including a 22-6-6 mark at home.

Sporting KC Game Notes | May 18, 2022 vs. Colorado Rapids | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes LICKING THEIR WOUNDS

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

SALLOI CALLED UP TO HUNGARIAN NATIONAL TEAM

Sporting Kansas City will have little time to dwell on Saturday night’s 7-2 thrashing at the hands of the Portland Timbers at Providence Park as the team returns home for a matchup with the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night at Children’s Mercy Park. While Sporting are coming off the team’s worst loss in three years, the Rapids will be feeling good following a 2-0 home win over league-leaders LAFC on Saturday afternoon.

Sporting Kansas City forward Daniel Salloi has been selected to the Hungary Men’s National Team for their first four matches of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League group stage, the club announced on Monday. Salloi will depart for Europe following Sporting’s home match on May 28 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. After making his debut for Hungary’s senior national team last September, Salloi will join the Magyars once again for four group stage matches in June. Hungary was drawn into Group 3 in the top-flight League A of the Nations League after earning promotion from League B last season. Hungary will open their Nations League campaign by hosting England at Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday, June 4. Following that match, the Magyars will travel to face Italy on June 7, host Germany on June 11 and reunite with England away from home on June 14.

In a game with few positives, Sporting scored two or more goals in a game for just the third time this season in all competitions - with all three occasions coming in the last four games. Johnny Russell bagged his team-leading third goal of the season to pull level with Sporting Legends Davy Arnaud and Josh Wolff for third in Sporting’s all-time charts with 43 goals in regular-season play. Sporting’s other goal on the night came from Cypriot international Marinos Tzionis, who scored his first MLS goal for the club four days after he bagged a late equalizer in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 against FC Dallas. Both of Tzionis’s goals for Sporting to date have been headers - his first headed goals since the 2018/19 season with Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus.

Salloi linked up with Hungary for a trio of World Cup qualifiers last September, earning his first senior national team minutes against future group stage opponent England. He earned his first national team start a month later on Oct. 9 in a 1-0 loss to Albania. Led by Italian head coach Marco Rossi, Hungary earned a promotion from League B into League A of the UEFA Nations League after topping a group consisting of Russia, Serbia and Turkey. Their 11 points from six matches in the group stage were good enough to earn them a spot in the top flight of the UEFA Nations League. Before his seniorteam debut last season, Salloi represented Hungary in UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying in 2019, where he scored once in four appearances.

Sporting has found some solace at home this season, losing just one of their six home games in all competitions this season on their way to a 3-1-2 record (2-1-2 in MLS).

RAPID RECAP

Sporting Kansas City closes out their season series with the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night when the club hosts the Rapids at Children’s Mercy Park. The two teams couldn’t be coming off more polarizing weekends, as Sporting are licking their wounds following the 7-2 loss to the Portland Timbers at Providence Park, while the Rapids are flying high following a 2-0 home win over league-leading LAFC on Saturday.

VAZQUEZ STARS AS SKC II ENJOYS COMEBACK VICTORY

Sporting Kansas City II wingers Julian Vazquez and Mataeo Bunbury continued to shine as the team earned an impressive come-from-behind victory over Portland Timbers 2 at Hillsboro Stadium in Oregon on Sunday night.

The two sides have already met once this season, with the Rapids claiming a 2-0 victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on March 12. Former Sporting striker fired Colorado ahead midway through the first half before Canadian international Mark-Anthony Kaye bundled home a second shortly after halftime to give the Rapids all three points.

Trailing by a goal following Carlos Vivas’ thunderous header early in the second half, Vazquez pulled Sporting II level with his second goal in as many games. After scoring his first goal for the club in last weekend’s 4-2 victory over former club Real Monarchs, Vazquez received a pass from Rauf Salifu and clinically stroked the ball into the bottom corner to make the score 1-1 in the 73rd minute. Following a red card to Cole McLagan, Bunbury, 16, burst away from two markers and into the area before firing into the top left corner to give his side all three points with his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Sporting claimed the season series against Colorado in 2021, going 1-0-2 despite the Rapids finishing first in the Western Conference. Sporting earned a commanding 3-1 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on June 23, 2021 following a first-half brace from Daniel Salloi and a first MLS goal from Felipe Hernandez. The two sides met again on Aug. 7, 2021, this time at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. This time Sporting scrapped to a 0-0 draw with a heavily rotated lineup as Peter Vermes had one eye on the Leagues Cup match against Club Leon three days later.

Vazquez, 21, joined Sporting II this past offseason after developing in the Real Salt Lake Academy and signing as the RSL’s 16th Homegrown Player in 2018. He spent most of the 2019 and 2020 seasons on loan with Real Monarchs in the USL Championship, helping the team win the league title in 2019. Vazquez made his Real Salt Lake first team debut on June 11, 2019, in a U.S. Open Cup defeat to LAFC.

The final meeting of the 2021 season came on Aug. 28 - with the teams again splitting the points. Jonathan Lewis gave the Rapids a controversial early lead, firing home after appearing to control the ball with his hand. Sporting fought back and found an equalizer before halftime as Johnny Russell curled home a stunning free kick to see out a 1-1 scoreline.

A native of Brigham City, Utah, Vazquez left RSL at the end of 2020 and spent the 2021 USL Championship campaign with Las Vegas Lights. At the youth international level, Vazquez featured for the Mexico U-18s in the spring of 2019 - playing in a pair of friendlies against England - and for the Mexico U-20s in January 2020, starting one of two appearances against Sporting KC goalkeeper John Pulskamp and the United States.

While the Rapids find themselves in the playoff hunt and Sporting closer to the bottom of the conference, the two sides have very similar road records. Colorado are winless in their five road games in 2022, going 0-4-1. Sporting are 3-1-2 at home in all competitions this season, including a 2-1-2 mark in MLS play.

#PORvSKC QUOTES

Captain & forward Johnny Russell...

TZIONIS PRODUCES TWO-GOAL WEEK

On what went wrong in the second half: “We spoke at halftime that we had done some nice things in the first half and that the next goal was massively important. If we got it then we really felt we could have went on and won the game. Then we let them score in 45 seconds, something like that. Then it’s just an absolute capitulation after that. To concede six goals in one half of a game is – I’m trying to choose my words carefully here -- it’s not even embarrassing. It’s so far beyond that. It’s just a complete disgrace as a professional, individually and as a team. That second half is so unacceptable on so many levels. Generally, I don’t even know what to say honestly. I’ve never been as embarrassed in my whole career. I’ve had some low times in my career but this is number one. Already this season hasn’t been acceptable. Just pathetic really in the second half. Not good enough. Actually, I’m embarrassed to call ourselves professionals.”

Sporting Kansas City winger Marinos Tzionis capped a memorable week in his Sporting KC career as he followed up his first goal for the club - a 98th-minute equalizer to send the game to extra time in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 last Tuesday - with his first MLS goal in Saturday’s 7-2 loss to the Portland Timbers at Providence Park. Tzionis entered the game in the 58th minute, replacing holding midfielder Uri Rosell as Sporting chased a 4-0 deficit. With the team down 5-1 in the 72nd minute, Tzionis met Felipe Hernandez’s perfectly placed free kick and glanced home his second headed goal of the week to give Sporting life heading into the final 15 minutes of the match. However, Sporting center back Robert Voloder was sent off three minutes later and the game would eventually end 7-2 in favor of the hosts. Tzionis now has two goals in just three starts in all competitions this season (11 starts), and will likely see more time moving forward with Johnny Russell and Khiry Shelton sidelined with knee and hamstring injuries, respectively, for this Wednesday’s match against the Colorado Rapids at Children’s Mercy Park.

On his message to the team: “I said a few things after the game but obviously it’s my job. I have to lead the team. I’m not above that. I’ve not been good enough. It’s easy to lead when times are easy. Times are not easy right now and it’s a challenge that I have to take. I generally don’t know right now where to begin. Every single one of us inside should feel disgusted at that performance. If you don’t, this isn’t for you and you shouldn’t be playing this game. We need to have a serious, serious look at ourselves and stop talking about the next one and the next one. All we’ve done is talk. We’ve not shown anything. We’ve shown snippets at times that we might turn a corner but that right there shows how far off it we actually are right now.”

The 20-year-old Cypriot joined Sporting as a U-22 Initiative signing this past offseason, arriving from hometown club Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus. He helped Omonia win their first league title in 11 years during the 2020-21 campaign, tallying seven goals in 43 appearances for the club in all competitions. Most recently, Tzionis scored his first international goal for Cyprus against Estonia on March 29.

Sporting KC Game Notes | May 18, 2022 vs. Colorado Rapids | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 211 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 174 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 491 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the seventh longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.
