SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

SUSPENSIONS SUBSIDE

Following a nice bounce-back week for Sporting Kansas City by taking four points across two games against the Colorado Rapids and the San Jose Earthquakes, Peter Vermes’ side now shifts focus back to the U.S. Open Cup and a Round of 16 matchup with longtime rivals Houston Dynamo FC at Children’s Mercy Park on Wednesday night.

After dealing with four suspensions over the last two matches, Sporting KC can head into Wednedsay’s U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 matchup with the Houston Dynamo with the knowledge that no players will be missing due to suspension. Andreu Fontas and Daniel Salloi were each suspended for Sunday’s 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park, with Roger Espinoza and Robert Voloder returning after serving a suspension in the midweek 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids at CMP.

Sporting are coming off a 1-1 road draw against the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park on Sunday night, where Johnny Russell bagged his fourth goal of the season just before halftime only for San Jose to respond through Jackson Yueill immediately after the interval. Veteran midfielder Roger Espinoza recorded his first assist of the season on the goal, becoming one of only three active MLS players with assists in 13 different seasons along with Kei Kamara (13) and Dax McCarty (16).

Centerback Fontas and joint-top scorer Salloi each received straight red cards deep into second-half stoppage time during the feisty victory over Colorado last Wednesday. Salloi was initially shown a yellow card for his challenge on Nicolas Mezquida in the 96th minute of the match, but it was later raised to a red card for serious foul play on recommendation from the VAR, Daniel Radford. Referee Drew Fischer dealt Fontas a straight red card for violent conduct during the melee that ensued.

While Sporting are yet to win on the road in 2022 (0-6-2), the team has found life much easier at home, going 4-1-2 in all competitions to date. Sporting has also only lost just one of their last seven games in all competitions, going 2-1-4 since mid-April - with both wins coming at Children’s Mercy Park.

After going the first nine games of the 2022 season without a red card shown in a Sporting match, there have now been eight red cards shown in Sporting’s last six games in all competitions. Three of those reds have been shown to Sporting players, matching the team’s entire tally from the 2021 campaign.

HOUSTON REUNION

Sporting Kansas City returns home on Wednesday night to take on longtime rivals Houston Dynamo FC at Children’s Mercy Park in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. It’s a second chance for a reunion with former Sporting midfielder and Sporting II head coach Paulo Nagamura, who is in the midst of his first MLS head coaching job with Houston in 2022.

SALLOI & TZIONIS SET FOR INTERNATIONAL DUTY

Sporting Kansas City forwards Daniel Salloi and Marinos Tzionis have been selected to represent the Hungary and Cyprus Men’s National Team, respectively, for their first four matches of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League group stage, the club announced last week. Salloi & Tzionis will depart for Europe following Sporting’s home match on May 28 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Houston assistant coaches Chris Martinez and Jimmy Nielsen also spent significant time with Sporting, as Martinez was an assistant coach with SKC II from 2018-2021, while Nielsen captained Sporting from 2010-2013 before returning as a member of the technical staff in 2021.

After making his debut for Hungary’s senior national team last September, Salloi will join the Magyars once again for four group stage matches in June. Hungary was drawn into Group 3 in the top-flight League A of the Nations League after earning promotion from League B last season. Hungary will open their Nations League campaign by hosting England at Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday, June 4. Following that match, the Magyars will travel to face Italy on June 7, host Germany on June 11 and reunite with England away from home on June 14. Salloi linked up with Hungary for a trio of World Cup qualifiers last September, earning his first senior national team minutes against future group stage opponent England. He earned his first national team start a month later on Oct. 9 in a 1-0 loss to Albania.

The two teams met back on March 5, 2022 in Sporting KC’s home opener, with the hosts running out as 1-0 winners. Following a tight first half, Remi Walter fired home the eventual game-winner in the 60th minute with a composed finish to give Sporting all three points and had Nagamura his first loss as Dynamo head coach. Since then, Houston has gone from strength to strength and currently sit in a tie for seventh in the Western Conference with a 5-5-3 record and are coming off a highly impressive 3-0 road victory over the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday night.

Tzionis and Cyprus are slated to play their opening fixtures in UEFA Nations League C during FIFA’s two-week international window, hosting Kosovo on June 2 and Northern Ireland on June 5 at AEK Arena in Larnaca, Cyprus, before traveling to face Greece on June 9 and Northern Ireland on June 12. One of Cyprus’ best young players, Tzionis scored his first senior international goal on March 29 to spark a 2-0 win over Estonia as the Cypriots avoided relegation to UEFA Nations League D for the 2022-23 cycle. The 20-year-old has already earned 14 caps at the senior level.

Sporting and Houston have a history in the U.S. Open Cup, having met five times since the 2011 edition of the tournament. Sporting holds a 3-2-0 record in those five matches - made more impressive by the fact that four of those five games were on the road in Texas. The two sides last met in the Open Cup in 2018, with Houston advancing to the Semifinals following a 4-2 victory over Sporting at PNC Stadium.

#SJvSKC QUOTES

In the only previous Open Cup match between Sporting and Houston that was held at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting beat the Dynamo 3-1 on July 21, 2015 on their way to claiming the 2015 U.S. Open Cup title. After Houston’s Luis Garrido had been sent off in the 30th minute, the visitors actually took the lead through Will Bruin in the 59th minute. However, Sporting roared back and scored three unanswered through Benny Feilhaber, Dom Dwyer and Krisztian Nemeth to claim victory on the night and send the team on its way to eventual glory later that season.

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes... On the team’s lineup and performance: “We have a certain group of guys that are available. We have a player still signed up for hardship. So I think it probably was the best way for us to go in this game. We were missing a lot of guys up front. Johnny (Russell) did a heck of a job playing in the middle of the park. I think all the guys worked really hard. All the guys were very concentrated. They were locked in. They were very intelligent in the game, stuck to the execution of the game plan and, if not for the situation that occurred with their goal, we’re walking out of here with three points in a very tough place to play against a team that scores a lot of goals. I think we did a really good job of limiting them. They’re a very busy team off the ball so I think we did a good job of being able to hold them away from a lot of chances on goal and also a lot of service in the box.”

RUSSELL SOLDIERS ON, SECURES POINT FOR SKC

Sporting Kansas City captain Johnny Russell has soldiered on in recent weeks as he deals with knee and hamstring issues that have nagged him throughout the 2022 campaign to date. During Sunday’s 1-1 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park, Russell bagged the opening goal of the game on the stroke of halftime which would eventually be enough to secure a point for Sporting on the road. Starting in an unfamiliar role as the team’s center forward on Sunday, Russell pounced on quality build-up from Roger Espinoza and Cam Duke to fire Sporting ahead from close range in the 45th minute. Espinoza’s chipped ball was expertly corralled by Duke who rounded JT Marcinkowski before cutting the ball back to Russell who fired into the bottom corner past two San Jose players on the line.

On the play of Cam Duke: “I think he was a little bit of a handful for them, just his quickness. He got through them a couple of times. I mean he almost got through early on the first ball of the game almost. I think it was surprising to their outside guys. I think he did a great job of getting around the guy, but then he had enough composure to slow down and then find a really good pass to Johnny. Johnny finishes it really well and for us to go into halftime being up 1-0 was great.”

The goal was Russell’s 44th in MLS regular-season play for Sporting KC, moving him up into sole possession of third place in the club’s all-time rankings. The 32-year-old only trails Sporting legend Preki (71 goals) and former striker Dom Dwyer (57 goals), and he’s now one ahead of Davy Arnaud and Josh Wolff who sit on 43 apiece. Russell also became just the fifth player in club history to hit 75 combined goals and assists in the regular season on Sunday, joining Preki, Graham Zusi, Chris Klein and Arnaud.

On the willingness of players to play multiple positions: “It has to be at the moment for so many reasons. A big credit to all the guys. I appreciate their commitment and their effort. They’re competing. In the last 6-7 games, we’ve gotten results except for one. The guys have shown something. There’s definitely a fight in the guys and we have got to keep finding a way to keep getting points. For us to get a point on the road here, banged up as we are and also just some guys out for other things, I’m really, really proud of the team and I appreciate it very much.”

Russell has 47 goals and 38 assists in 142 appearances across all competitions for Sporting KC since joining the club from Derby County in January 2018.

Sporting KC Game Notes | May 25, 2022 vs. Houston Dynamo FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 212 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 175 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 493 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the seventh longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

Central midfielder Remi Walter signed with Sporting KC in December 2020, having amassed nearly 200 professional appearances since 2012, spanning seven full seasons in his native France and one season in Turkey. He boasts experience in several prestigious European competitions, including the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Champions League qualifying, French Ligue 1 and the Turkish Super Lig. A native of Essey-les-Nancy, Walter developed in Nancy’s youth academy before joining the first team as an 18-year-old in 2013. He became a regular starter in the early stages of the 2013-14 season and spent the next two and a half years as an integral midfield contributor for the side before being transferred to French title contender Nice in early

2016. Walter helped the club to a fourth-place finish as well as qualification to the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The following season, he made 26 appearances as Nice took another step forward by placing third in Ligue 1 and booking a spot in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League. Walter split the 2017-18 campaign between Nice and Troyes on loan, before returning to Nice in the summer of 2018. Walter transferred to Turkish first division outfit Yeni Malatyaspor in January of 2020 before departing later that summer. On the international stage, Walter was a French youth international who participated in a number of high-profile tournaments, namely the 2012 UEFA U-17 Championship in Slovenia and qualifying for the 2017 UEFA U-21 Championship in Poland.
