May 12, 2012 (WEEK 10, MLS Game #93) 7:30 p.m. CT (CSN-Chi; KSMO) The Chicago Fire conclude their two-game homestand this week when they play to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening at Toyota Park. The Fire were in action at midweek, gaining a scoreless draw with Real Salt Lake. Sporting have lost back-to-back games after opening the season with seven wins in a row, last a 2-0 home to the expansion Montréal Impact last weekend. REFEREE: Jose Carlos Rivero. The Fire’s 3-2 win last year in Bridgeview was their first home win in the series since 2007.  Kansas City hasn’t defeated Chicago at home since 2007. The teams have played to draws in four of their last five meetings in KC; the Fire took a 2-0 win there in 2009. Last year’s meeting, a scoreless draw, was the grand opening of Livestrong Sporting Park.  Coaches record: Frank Klopas vs. KC: P1 W0 L0 D1 … Peter Vermes vs. CHI: P5 W1 L2 D2 CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire began their two-game homestand with a scoreless draw with Real Salt Lake, Wednesday evening at Toyota Park. The Fire are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from 8 games. LAST MATCH  The teams settled into a dour midfield battle for much of the contest. Kyle Reynish, deputizing for the injured Nick Rimando, was forced to make just one save in the RSL goal. Chicago Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson was called upon to make two saves.  The closest either team came after just four minutes. A cross from the Fire's Patrick Nyarko found Dominic Oduro wide open in the six-yard box, but the forward’s point-blank header hit the crossbar and was cleared.  Fire head coach Frank Klopas made no changes to the team that snatched a late 2-1 win against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center  CHICAGO FIRE (4-3-1-2): Sean Johnson - Dan Gargan (Jalil Anibaba 51), Arne Friedrich, Austin Berry, Gonzalo Segares - Logan Pause (Rafael Robayo 72), Pavel Pardo, Marco Pappa - Sebastian Grazzini - Patrick Nyarko (Federico Puppo 60), Dominic Oduro. TEAM NEWS  After the 2-1 win at Chivas USA when Jalil Anibaba was suspended, Fire head coach Frank Klopas maintained the same back four, with rookie Austin Berry alongside Arne Friedrich in central defense, and it shut out Real Salt Lake.

“The team won on the road and I didn’t want to change anything. I think that positional players are a little different than goalkeepers,” said Klopas. “The team played well and I didn’t want to change anything. I’ve always said that you rely on the team, and I didn’t want to make any changes coming off of a road victory.” Said left back Gonzalo Segares: “We’re definitely maturing with every game that passes. I think Arne is feeling better physically. You can tell that he’s feeling more confident. Austin [Berry] has done great to step in. He’s had two pretty strong games over there.” Anibaba did see action, coming into the match six minutes into the second half, replacing Dan Gargan at right back. “I really didn’t think Chivas had anything going in the run of play and tonight we got the shutout,” Gargan said. “I think it’s been a lot better over the last couple of games. I think we’re heading in the right direction defensively. It’s a good confidence booster for the defense.” There was another change on the hour mark, when Federico Puppo came in for Patrick Nyarko. “Sometimes with Pat, he’s hobbling at one point and then sprinting on the next play. He felt tight and he’s been feeling some things in his groin in the last couple weeks,” said Klopas. “He seemed like he was in pain and not himself, so I made the change. You never know with these things. We’ll see tomorrow.” Puppo has come off the bench for seven out of eight games this season; his 30 minutes vs. Real were his longest shift this season. “I still wanted to break them down through combination with our pace. We are not a team that is going to rely too much on service,” Klopas said “… In the games that he’s come in he has looked very sharp. I thought he was sharp in Chivas, and I wanted to attack the byeline through combinations and be able to play quick through them.” The shutout was the first of the season for the Fire since their second game, the 1-0 win against Philadelphia on March 24. “Communication was huge. I think being more engaged in the game, getting everybody to especially communicate within their small societies, if you will. I thought we did great on that tonight, and we were pleased,” said goalkeeper Sean Johnson. “Obviously it’s disappointing not getting three points. But at the end of the night, if you’re not going to come out with three points, you always want to come out with a point. It gives us a chance to win games if you don’t give up goals, and that’s what we did tonight.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City suffered their second consecutive defeat after seven wins in a row, dropping a 2-0 decision to the Montréal Impact on Saturday evening at Livestrong Sporting Park. Sporting have 21 points from 9 matches to lead the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  In the 30th minute, the Impact scored the game's opening goal. Justin Braun laid the ball off for Felipe, who settled in space and bent a left-footer from well outside the area past the fingertips of a diving Jimmy Nielsen and just inside the left post.  The lead was doubled after Lamar Neagle cut into the penalty area on a breakaway and was hauled down by Aurélien Collin in the 62nd minute. Patrice Bernier calmly stepped to the spot and converted to seal the victory.  Impact goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made six saves for his second straight clean sheet. Three of those stops kept Sporting from going up early.  Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made one change to the team that suffered a 1-0 defeat by the Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field. Michael Harrington came in at left back for Seth Sinovic.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-3-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Michael Harrington - Graham Zusi, Julio Cesar (Paulo Nagamura 79), Roger Espinoza - Kei Kamara, C.J. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 66), Bobby Convey. TEAM NEWS  After opening the season with seven consecutive wins, one shy of the all-time MLS record (for regulation-time victories), Sporting have lost two in a row. It’s the club first consecutive losses since last May 14-21, when they fell to the LA Galaxy and Seattle.  “From the beginning of the game, we made some simple mistakes that we haven’t done before: losing the ball in dangerous areas, sloppy passes,” said goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. “We have to give Montreal some credit, too. They defended well and figured out how to limit our chances. And we weren’t good enough to create the chances. We had a lot of the ball, a lot of shots from distance, but overall our worst performance of the season.”  After back-to-back shutouts, SKC have now not scored a goal in 205 minutes. They were last shutout in backto-back game on June 4-9, 2011.  “We were around their goal and had chances, but everything was off the mark,” said Vermes. “That’s not from being off two weeks. Look, we weren’t there and we weren’t sharp enough.” Said Kei Kamara: “The final pass

wasn’t there tonight. But there were a lot of things that weren’t there tonight. They played our game tonight, but they played it better. We pressure from minute one to 90, and they came into our house and did that better.” Sporting allowed two goals in a game for the first time this season, and have allowed five goals on the campaign – second in MLS after Week 9, behind Seattle Sounders FC (3). “I think we got outfought tonight, and I can honestly say that it’s the first time that this team, our team, that it’s happened to us this year,” midfielder Graham Zusi said. “I can pretty much promise you that it won’t happen again.” Seth Sinovic – who missed a start for the first since May 28, 2011 – says he could be able to return for the Chicago match. But Vermes is not ready yet to make that commitment. Michael Harrington came in for Sinovic at left back, his first long shift of the season (he came on as a very late substitute vs. Real Salt Lake on April 14. “His possession was very good,” Vermes said of Harrington. “His entry ball out of the back was really good. … He made good decisions in where he played the ball. I thought defensively he was locked in, didn’t really give anything away. All of that was good stuff.” Sporting KC’s lifetime record is now a perfect – 201 wins, 201 losses, 100 draws in 502 games played. They have scored 707 goals in club history, allowing 713.

The Fire took the 2011 season series, winning a 3-2 decision over Sporting on Opening Day, March 26 at Toyota Park before playing to a 0-0 draw to open LiveSTRONG Sporting Park on June 9, 2011. Tonight’s match is the only Fire home game of the 2012 series as the two teams will meet at LiveSTRONG Sporting Park on June 29 and September 29. QUICK KICKS vs. Sporting KC (7-2-0; 21pts. 18 GF, 12 GA)  The Fire hold a 21-10-9 all-time MLS Regular Season record against Sporting Kansas City.  The Fire hold an even more dominant 15-2-3 record in matches played at home.  Fire head coach Frank Klopas and Sporting head coach Peter Vermes played eight times together for the U.S. Men’s National Team between 1988-94.  Having run out to a 7-0-0 start on the MLS campaign, Sporting KC have dropped their last two results, 1-0 at Portland on April 21 and 2-0 vs. Montreal on May 5.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (3-2-3, 12pts.) enter their 15th season of MLS play after rebounding midseason to post a 9-9-16 record, which left the side three points outside of the playoffs in 2011. Locking up the likes of Pavel Pardo and Logan Pause this past offseason, the team returns the entirety of its starting eleven to Toyota Park in 2012, while adding Uruguayan striker Federico Puppo, Zimbabwean forward Kheli Dube and Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo to support the Ghanaian tandem of Dominic Oduro and Patrick Nyarko. The team also reinforced their defensive corps in the offseason by adding German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich as well as two young defenders via the MLS SuperDraft in center back Austin Berry and left back Hunter Jumper who will be expected to provide cover for the likes of Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares and Dan Gargan in 2012. FIRE BATTLE REAL SALT LAKE TO 0-0 DRAW On a night where the Chicago Fire (3-2-3; 12pts.) inducted 13-year club veteran C.J. Brown into the ‘Ring of Fire’, the home side fought hard throughout and kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw vs. Real Salt Lake (7-3-2; 23pts.) Wednesday night at Toyota Park. The Fire nearly took the lead right out of the gate when defender Dan Gargan collected a cross-field pass from Logan Pause and sent Patrick Nyarko up the right flank. The speedy Ghanaian drove to the endline, sending a cross for Dominic Oduro which saw the striker nod his effort off the crossbar in the fourth minute of play. Six minutes later the Fire threatened again as Marco Pappa played a quick combination with defender Gonzalo Segares in midfield. Segares collected and sent Pappa in on the left where the Guatemalan international fired a quick shot that RSL ‘keeper Kyle Reynish parried away before it was cleared in the 10th minute. Salt Lake took their first crack in the 16th minute when a seemingly harmless ball from Alvaro Saborio on the right deflected off of Pavel Pardo and into the visitor’s attack. The play caught Fire rookie defender Austin Berry wrong-footed, allowing striker Paulo Junior a low effort that he sent wide left of Sean Johnson’s goal. A long stretch of possession play saw both teams lack chances through the middle of the half before the Fire nearly took the lead into the half. Fire captain Logan Pause slid in to dispossess Ned Grabavoy on the sideline, leaving the ball for Pappa. The Guatemalan worked towards the middle before laying off for Pardo who took his space and fired a 30-yard blast just over Reynish’s goal, taking the teams into the break deadlocked. It was the visitors who took the early initiative in the second half when Jonny Steele settled the ball on the left before playing a central pass for Grabavoy. The former Chicago Fire PDL product one-touched for Paulo Junior who unleashed a blast from 25-yards that forced a diving save out of Johnson and a clear from Friedrich in the 46th minute. Moments later first half substitute Luis Gil played a one-two combination with Saborio before knuckling an effort at Johnson. The Fire goalkeeper saved the shot but spilled it, however, Paulo Junior whiffed on the follow-up attempt allowing Johnson to collect the ball in the 50th minute. The Fire looked to recover in the 54th when a harmless ball out of the back from Arne Friedrich was misjudged by RSL defender Chris Schuler. Oduro ran onto the ball and drove towards goal before holding up to slide to Nyarko who fed Sebastian Grazzini in up the right. Grazzini came close to the end line before his quick cross was snagged by Reynish. The next Fire attempt came in the 69th minute as Grazzini nodded down a high ball into the path of Pappa. Pappa strode up the left, cut inside the box and blasted a low left-footed drive across goal which Reynish blocked before RSL defender Chris Wingert cleared it off the line. Frank Klopas looked to insert energy into the attack with the second half substitutions of Federico Puppo and Rafael Robayo. The plan nearly worked out in the 85th minute when Jalil Anibaba found Robayo with his cross from the right. The Colombian dove away from goal, looking to redirect the ball but his headed effort went just wide right of Reynish’s goal, leaving the match in a 0-0 deadlock. PAPPA MOVIN’ UP THE CHARTS Marco Pappa’s goal in last Friday’s 2-1 win at Chivas USA continues to see him move up the club’s MLS scoring list. His 89th minute “Olimpico” in a 2-1 rd loss to the Seattle Sounders on April 28 moved him into a tie with Nate Jaqua for seventh on the club’s list with 21 before Friday’s 93 minute game winner moved him up to a tie for fifth with Damani Ralph and Dema Kovalenko at 22. See below who Pappa will look to chase down through the remainder of the Fire campaign… Rank 1 2 3 4 5 -

BREAKING THE MAY WINLESS STREAK With last Friday’s 2-1 win at Chivas USA, the Fire got the May winless monkey off their back while a 0-0 draw Wednesday kept the team unbeaten this month. Prior to the victory, the team had ridden a nine-match winless streak in May, going 0-3-6 since the side’s last victory, which ironically enough came with a 3-2 win on May 29, 2008 at Chivas USA. With six more competitive matches in the month of May, the Fire will hope to equal their best seven match, calendar-month stretch from July 2001, in which the team went 6-1-0… See below all of the club’s previous seven-match stretches in a calendar month. From there the team went on a nine match winless streak, resulting in head coach Carlos de los Cobos being relieved of his duties on May 31. With the move, Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas moved down from the Front Office to take over the coaching reins on an interim basis and led the team to its first win in 12 matches with a late, dramatic 1-0 victory on June 12 at Columbus. Despite the victory, the Fire struggled in the league through much of the summer but found a way to navigate through the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory over Rochester on June 28 and a 4-0 win over Red Bull New York on July 12 putting the team into the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2006. The midseason acquisitions of Pavel Pardo, Sebastian Grazzini and Dan Gargan reinforced the Fire and helped the team begin a late summer run with matching 2-0 victories over Toronto FC (August 21) and the Colorado Rapids (August 28) before booking a spot in an MLS record sixth U.S. Open Cup final with a 2-1 semifinal victory over Richmond on August 30. The team recovered from their early season struggles, in which they won only two of their first 20 matches, to end 2011 with the club’s second best regular season record at 7-2-1 and just three points out of the MLS Cup playoffs.

Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | May 12th, 2012 @ Chicago Fire| www.SportingKC.com

Kansas City Connections Sporting Kansas City last played Chicago Fire to a 0-0 draw in the inaugural match at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on June 9, 2011 in front of a sellout crowd of 19,925 people. The contest was highlighted by the ejection of Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen halfway through the second half for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Eric Kronberg came off the bench to replace Nielsen in the 68th minute. Prior to the ejection, Sporting Kansas City and Graham Zusi thought they earned the first ever goal at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. In the 15th minute of the match Kei Kamara sent a cross to the backpost. Graham Zusi knocked it in, but the goal was called back seconds later because Omar Bravo was offside on the play.

The red card was issued in the 67th minute when the Fire chipped a ball behind the Kansas City backline to Dominic Oduro. Nielsen was the only player left as he rushed out of the box to put pressure on Oduro. As Oduro attempted to lob the ball over Nielsen’s head, the Danish international stuck out his hand to block the shot despite being outside the area. The straight red was an easy decision for referee Michael Kennedy and a bit worrisome for Kansas City fans. Kronberg’s efforts were able preserve the shutout, but neither team was able to capitalize on the ample opportunities throughout the match. I think it is safe to say both teams are ready for the rematch.

Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes and Chicago Fire head coach Frank Klopas were roommates when they played for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Frank Klopas played for Kansas City from 1996-1997. Klopas scored seven goals and tallied 11 assists during his two seasons with Kansas City. Chicago Fire striker Mkhokheli Dube spent the second half of his college career (2006-2007) at Coastal Carolina where he was named 2007 Big South Player of the Year. Sporting Kansas City defender Cyprian Hedrick also played for Coastal Carolina recording six goals and one assist from a defensive position. Hedrick received Big South Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the 2011 NSCAA Men’s Collegiate Scholar All-American first team. Sporting Kansas City defender Michael Harrington and Chicago Fire midfielder Corben Bone were both members of the Region III ODP team in 2003. Both boys went on to play in the ACC at the Universities of North Carolina and Wake Forest respectively. Fire striker Jalil Anibaba transferred to the University of North Carolina for his senior season(2010), however, Anibaba and Harrington’s(2003-2006) time in school did not overlap. Mkhokheli Dube first joined MLS playing for the New England Revolution after earning selection in the 2008 SuperDraft. Dube stayed with the Revs for four seasons (2008-2011) before his selection by Chicago Fire in the Re-Entry Process Stage 2 Draft. Sporting Kansas City defender Seth Sinovic also began his MLS career in New England(2010-2011) as a second-round MLS SuperDraft selection in 2010. Sinovic and Dube spent one full season together before Seth was waived on March 31st of 2011 before signing with KC in May. While with the Revolution, Sinovic also played with Chicago Fire defender Cory Gibbs and midfielder Michael Videira. Gibbs was born in Plantation, Florida, just three hours south of Orlando, FL, the birth place of Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi.

Chicago Fire starting goalkeeper Sean Johnson played in the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifiers with Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury at the end of March in Nashville, TN. Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jay Nolly played collegiate soccer at Indiana University with Sporting Kansas City forward Jacob Peterson. The two led the hoosiers to back-to-back National Championships in 2003 and 2004. Sporting Kansas City midfielder Paulo Nagamura and Chicago Fire midfielder Daniel Paladini were teammates in 2006 at the LA Galaxy and again in 2008 with Chivas USA. Fire midfielder Victor Pineda and Sporting goalkeeper Jon Kempin are both the first home grown players for their respective clubs. Pineda and Kempin are also the youngest players on their respective team rosters. Chicago Fire defender Dan Gargen and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Bobby Convey are two of the more veteran players set to play on Saturday, both having played for multiple teams in MLS before ending up where they are now. Both Gargen and Convey were born in Philadelphia, PA.

Sporting Kansas City News, Notes and headlines Results | Sporting Kansas City remains atop the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-2-0 (21 points). The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to start the season. However, Kansas City suffered back-to-back losses on April 21st and May 5th for the first time since 2011 on May 14 to the LA Galaxy and May 21 to the Seattle Sounders. The loss marked the first time in club history that Kansas City has lost their first match against an expansion team. The team’s record in series-opening matches against expansion teams moves to 6-14. However, the match did host the largest attendence thus far at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in 2012 with 20,404 fans in the seats. Seth Sinovic | Seth Sinovic missed his first match since earning a spot in the starting XI on May 28, 2011. Sinovic broke his wrist against the Portland Timbers on April 21st. The Creighton product underwent surgery on April 24th and appears to be working his way back into the mix. Sinovic practiced this week, but coaches are not sure whether he will be ready for the start against Chicago. Veteran Michael Harrington started for Kansas City against Montreal and provides an experienced replacement for Sinovic having been in MLS since 2007. Chet North | Sporting Kansas City trainer Chet North will experience the 500th league match of his career on Saturday. He began working for Kansas City when Major League Soccer started in 1996 and has maintained his position ever since. 2012 marks the 17th season for Sporting Kansas City and North has only missed three games during his entire career. The first was four years ago when his son was born and the other two were two years ago when he let his assistant do the games in Dallas and Houston because he went to school in Texas. New Broadcast Stations | Sporting Kansas City announced Thursday the addition of MyTV Wichita and WIBW-TV/MyTV Topeka as the club’s new regional broadcast partners. The stations will carry all 13 of the club’s remaining away matches live this season.
