COLORADO RAPIDS vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY DICK’S SPORTING GOODS PARK, Commerce City, Colo. May 19, 2012 (WEEK 11, MLS Game #104) 7 p.m. MT (Altitude; KSMO) The Colorado Rapids return home for the first time in nearly a month, playing host to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids concluded their three-game road swing at midweek, a 2-0 loss to D.C. United. Sporting are looking to put the brakes on a three-game losing streak after a seven-game winning run to open the season, last time out falling 2-1 on the road to the Chicago Fire. The last three league meetings between the clubs have been 1-1 draws, two in Commerce City and the first meeting ever at Livestrong Sporting Park (last July 6). Kansas City hasn’t won in Colorado since 2004, a 3-1 win at Invesco Field at Mile High. All-time at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the Rapids have won two of the five meetings, with three draws. The Rapids have not won at Kansas City since 2002, a 2-1 win at Arrowhead Stadium. Sporting have won seven of the 11 meetings since with four draws. The teams also met in the Western Conference Semifinals a year ago, Sporting winning both legs 2-0 to advance 4-0 on aggregate. Coaches record: Oscar Pareja vs. KC: first game … Peter Vermes vs. COL: P5 W1 L0 D4 COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids completed their long road swing with a defeat, coming off a layoff with a 2-0 loss to D.C. United on Wednesday evening at RFK Stadium. The Rapids are in fifth place in the Western Conference with 15 points from 11 games. LAST MATCH United took the lead in the 25th minute. Lewis Neal picked up a loose ball in midfield with space to roam, and made his way towards goal before picking out Dwayne De Rosario’s run from the right. The Canadian international slipped a shot past Matt Pickens from inside the area. The home side finished off the match on the hour. Neal picked up a loose clearance and sent a cross in for Branko Boskovic, and the resulting header was saved by Pickens. But Hamdi Salihi was right there to knock in the rebound from close range. Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja made two changes to the side that recorded a 2-0 win at FC Dallas. Hunter Freeman came in at right back for Kosuke Kimura, and Conor Casey started in attack for Omar Cummings. COLORADO RAPIDS (4-3-1-2): Matt Pickens - Hunter Freeman, Drew Moor, Tyrone Marshall, Luis Zapata, Brian Mullan (Kamani Hill 46), Jeff Larentowicz, Jaime Castrillon (Wells Thompson 78) - Martin Rivero - Tony Cascio, Conor Casey (Edu 65).
MLS GAME INFORMATION
TEAM NEWS The Rapids concluded their three-game road swing with two losses in three games. They now return home for five out of the next six games, with only a trip to Vancouver ahead before early July. Conor Casey made his first start since July 16, 2011, when he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon 38 minutes into a match at Seattle. He had appeared in two of the last three matches as a substitute. “Conor is in the process. He’s still in the preseason mode since he was out of the training. Now he’s getting back,” said Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja. “Today we were planning on giving him a half, maybe a little bit more. He was up, supporting up top, and that’s important for the group. By the end, you want to keep him on the field, but we have a quick turnaround with a game on Saturday. We have to be progressive with Conor. It’s a process for him, and he’s going to need a couple games.” Said Casey: “It felt good. It was nice to know I got 60 minutes or so. It was good to be out there. I was looking to get a good run in and sweat. Physically, it’s all positive. The minutes were good. I didn’t feel too bad at the end, so that’s good. I’m really excited about that, and getting back in the swing of it.” With Omar Cummings still sidelined with an ankle sprain, Pareja paired Casey with rookie Tony Cascio as he remained with a duo up top. “It was fantastic [getting Casey back]. He’s a natural forward, he’s a natural player,” said midfielder Jeff Larentowicz. “He’s got tremendous skill on the ball, and that’s something we’ve lacked from the start of the year. I thought he did well tonight.” Recent signing Edu made his MLS debut, coming on for the final 25 minutes. “It’s hard to say how long [it will take to adapt]. We’ve got to adapt these guys into the team, and it’s a process for us. We’ve got to be patient with the new players and faces that come to the team, and it’s going to take a little while,” Pareja said. “I think this happened today already with the group, it helped and provided some depth. We hope the competition will give them what they need to be ready.” The Rapids were forced into a change at halftime when Brian Mullan was forced off, replaced by Kamani Hill. “I think the coaches have to depend on the players that have been in there every week. That’s me, that’s Drew [Moor], that’s the guys that have been around for a while,” said Larentowicz. “At the moment, we’re not holding it all together. It’s difficult for the players coming in. It shouldn’t be difficult for us to hold it in together. At the moment, we’re not doing a great job on the road, we’re having difficulty scoring goals, but the season goes on.” SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City lost for a third consecutive match, the Chicago Fire coming from behind for a 2-1 win Saturday evening at Toyota Park. Sporting have 21 points from 10 matches, now in second place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH Sporting KC opened the lead in the 31st minute when Roger Espinoza pulled back a rolling pass from the right corner and Bobby Convey lashed it home first-time from the heart of the penalty area. But it all went pear-shaped for the visitors over the final half-hour. First, just after the hour, defender Aurélien Collin took down Dominic Oduro in the penalty area, and Grazzini buried the ensuing penalty kick. A minute later, SKC went a man down after Roger Espinoza was sent off by referee Jose Carlos Rivero for an elbow to Grazzini’s face. Sporting were able to hold out until the 81st minute, when Patrick Nyarko picked Kei Kamara's pocket just outside the six-yard box on the end line. Nyarko sent the ball into the path of an onrushing Oduro, and he bundled the ball over the line from six yards out for the winner. Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made no changes to the team that dropped a 2-0 decision to the Montréal Impact at Livestrong Sporting Park. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler (Lawrence Olum 88), Michael Harrington - Julio Cesar, Roger Espinoza (sent off 62) - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Bobby Convey (Jacob Peterson 78) - C.J. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 74). TEAM NEWS Sporting scored a goal for the first time in 235 minutes, but still saw their losing slide reach three games. Two of the three losses have been on the road. “I think for the first 60 minutes we were an excellent team but obviously some things happened that changed the outcome of the game and we’ll be ready for the next one. That’s what we have to do,” said Sporting manager Peter Vermes. Said goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen: “I think we were back on track today compared to last week where we were not very happy with our performance against Montreal. We showed we are a good team again and we just have to build from that. We played with discipline today and we talked about that before the game. It’s very important you are quick in your position and you play from there. I think we were very well organized and we did a good job, and worked hard for each other.” Bobby Convey scored his first goal since coming to Sporting in the offseason from the San Jose Earthquakes.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“I thought Bobby did a great job of coming in from left to right. It was a great service to the top on the box as opposed to inside where the goalkeeper or defense can get to it or where all the players are recovering to,” Vermes said. “He made the correct run, it was the right ball and I think it was a great finish, great timing. … It was a good action that we work on quite a bit.” Sporting will face at least one lineup decision with Roger Espinoza suspended for the Colorado match after his red card. Over the entirety of the season, Vermes has had to make just two changes in the first 10 games. “You could say Luke Sassano,” Vermes said. “You could say Paulo Nagamura. You could put Jacob Peterson in the middle. You could go completely different and play a little more defensive. There are a lot of ways to deal with it.” Michael Harrington returned to play left back for a second consecutive match, while Seth Sinovic – who started the first eight games of the season there – played in the reserve match Sunday in Chicago. “I think it was good for him, because it was a real game. He got to feel what it was like to get stuck in, go for headers and things like that. They didn’t really care that he had a cast on, because they’re not on his team. They don’t care if he gets hurt again,” said Vermes.

COLORADO RAPIDS vs. SPORTING KANSAS CITY The Colorado Rapids return home after three road matches to host Sporting Kansas City at 7:00 p.m. MT on Saturday, May 19. The Rapids are 5-6-0 (W-L-T) and in 5th place in the Western Conference, having lost their last match 2-0 to D.C. United on Wednesday, May 16. Colorado are 17-20-12 all-time against Kansas City, and are 14-4-7 against them at home. They have tied their last three regular season meetings since July 17, 2010, all by scores of 1-1. The Rapids will also have a shot at revenge against KC on Saturday, who eliminated Colorado from the playoffs in 2011. Sporting are 7-3-0 and started off the season strong with seven straight victories, but are now riding a three-game losing skid as they head to altitude and Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Edu makes MLS debut in D.C. Rapids forward Edu made his MLS debut against D.C. United on Wednesday night, coming on as a sub for forward Conor Casey in the 66th minute. Fellow newcomer Harrison Henao also made the trip, but did not enter the match and awaits his MLS debut, which could be made on Saturday. Henao, a Colombian midfielder signed on April 11, joined the Rapids after winning the 2010-11 Colombian Liga Postobon season with his former club Once Caldas. Edu brings to Colorado his experience in Spain’s La Liga with Celta de Vigo and Real Betis, where he scored a combined 69 goals in nine seasons, and also helped both clubs to their first UEFA Champions League appearances. For their full bios, visit www.ColoradoRapids.com. Conor Casey makes first start of 2012 Forward Conor Casey made his first start of the 2012 season against D.C. United on Wednesday night. He played 65 minutes and was a noticeable presence in the offensive third, getting several at goal. It was his first start since July 16, 2011 when he ruptured his achilles tendon at Seattle Sounders FC. Rapids come up short at D.C. United The Colorado Rapids dropped a 2-0 result to D.C. Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | May 19th, 2012 @ Colorado Rapids| www.SportingKC.com
When they last met... Sporting Kansas City last played the Colorado Rapids on November 2, 2011 in the second leg of a two-legged aggregate goal series during the MLS Cup playoffs. Kansas City won 2-0 on goals from Aurelien Collin and C.J. Sapong in that order. Both goals came as a result of a feed from Graham Zusi, who became the first player in club history to record a multi-assist game in postseason. The first goal was netted in the 28th minute when Collin beat Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens to the end of a Zusi free kick. The Frenchman’s header soared past Pickens to give Kansas City the 1-0 advantage. The second goal, also from a Zusi free kick, occurred in the 76th minute, but this time it was the head of Sapong who powerfully placed the ball past Pickens to give Sporting KC the assurance goal moving their lead to two.

Sapong’s goal would be the last of the match, giving Sporting Kansas City the 2-0 victory. The aggregate score of the two game series revealed a 4-0 triumph in favor of Sporting KC after starting the series with a 2-0 win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, where they will again face the Rapids this Saturday. Bunbury scored both goals in the first leg of the series at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Jacob Peterson began his Major League Soccer career playing for the Colorado Rapids in 2006. He spent four seasons in Colorado playing 92 games and scoring eight goals before being traded to Toronto FC prior to the 2010 season. Colorado Rapids defender Eddie Ababio made his first MLS appearance on November 2, 2011 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park as a substitute in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens was born in Washington, Missouri. Pickens attended Meramec Community College before transferring to Missouri State University to play college soccer from 2000 to 2003. Rapids defender Quincy Amarikwa started his MLS career playing for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2009 where he was teammates with Sporting Kansas City midfielder Bobby Convey for two seasons. Colorado midfielder Davy Armstrong was born in Aurora, Colorado while Rapids striker Conor Casey moved to Colorado at the age of five and considers Denver his hometown. Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza, originally born in Honduras, moved to the United States when he was 12. Like Casey, he also moved to Denver. Espinoza initially started high school at Denver South (the same high school Casey attended) before transferring to Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora. Espinoza will not be playing in Saturday’s match due to a red card received in last Saturday’s contest at Chicago. Colorado’s Omar Cummings and Sporting Kansas City’s Bobby Convey and Matt Besler were teammates together when they played Manchester United as members of the MLS All-Star team at Red Bull Arena. Colorado defender Hunter Freeman played for the Houston Dynamo in 2011. Freeman’s 100th MLS appearance was in a 1-1 draw against Kansas City at Robertson Stadium. Ironically, the last game Hunter Freeman appeared in for Houston was a 3-0 loss to Kansas City at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on September 10, 2011. Freeman was teammates with Sporting KC’s Luke Sassano in 2008 when they both played for the New York Red Bulls.
Colorado striker Kamani Hill played two years at UCLA, the same university that Sporting Kansas City defender Chance Myers attended. Hill was there for the 2004 and 2005 seasons while Myers played for the Bruins from 2006-2007. Rapids defender Jeff Larentowicz and Sporting KC’s Seth Sinovic both played for the New England Revolution prior to joining their current clubs. Their time spent with New England did not overlap. Colorado’s Tyrone Marshall and Sporting Kansas City’s Paulo Nagamura were teammates at the LA Galaxy from 2005-2006. Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni played collegiate soccer at NC State. Several years later, Kansas City defender Korede Aiyegbusi also competed for the Wolfpack. Rapids defender Drew Moor was teammates with Sporting Kansas City striker Jacob Peterson at Indiana where they led their team to the National Title in 2003 and 2004. Colorado’s Brian Mullan played college ball at the University of Creighton, the same school Sporting KC’s Seth Sinovic played collegiate soccer.

Sporting Kansas City suffered their third loss of the 2012 season on May 12th against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. The loss marked the 202nd loss in club history bringing Kansas City’s all-time record below .500 at 201-202100. Sporting KC striker Kei Kamara ranks first in the League for shots on goal with 20 and second in the League for shots with 46, behind Fredy Montero. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning assist will move him into a tie for 10th place on the club’s all-time chart, joining Mark Chung, Matt McKeon, and Sasha Victorine. Kei Kamara’s next game-winning goal will move him into a tie with Digital Takawira for fourth on the club’s all-time chart. Sporting Kansas City’s next successful penalty kick will be the 50th in club history. The club has converted 73% of penalties taken. Jimmy Nielsen is third in the League for lowest goals against average this season with 0.70 behind Michael Gspurning and Bill Hamid. Nielsen is tied for second among MLS goalkeepers for most wins with 7 behind Nick Rimando’s 8. Nielsen is tied with Joe Cannon for most shutouts (5) of any MLS goalkeeper. Jimmy Nielsen’s next shutout will move him into sole possession of second place on Sporting Kansas City’s all-time goalkeeping chart for clean sheets. Nielsen’s next win will tie Kevin Hartman for fourth most by a KC goalkeeper. Sporting Kansas City leads the League with 71 corner kicks in 2012. Sporting Kansas City has no wins in May in the last three seasons (last May win dates back to May 16, 2009 in a 2-0 win at RSL — a span of 12 straight May matches without a win). Graham Zusi’s next game-winning assist will move him into sole possession of fifth place on Sporting Kansas City’s alltime chart. 2012 Major Events at Livestrong sporting park

Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | May 19th, 2012 @ Colorado Rapids| www.SportingKC.com
Sporting Kansas City News, Notes and headlines Results | Sporting Kansas City falls out of the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-3-0 (21 points) for the first time this season. The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to start the season. However, Kansas City lost the last three matches marking the first time KC has lost three matches in a row since 2011 on April 30th versus the New York Red Bulls, May 14th to the LA Galaxy and May 21st against the Seattle Sounders. Kansas City looks to get a result in this weekend’s road match against the Colorado Rapids after tying both matches against the Rapids during the 2011 regular season. Seth Sinovic | Seth Sinovic missed his second match since earning a spot in the starting XI on May 28, 2011. Sinovic broke his wrist against the Portland Timbers on April 21st. The Creighton product underwent surgery on April 24th and appears to be working his way back into the mix. Sinovic has practiced for two weeks now, and even played in a Reserve League match last weekend in which Kansas City earned a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Fire. Veteran Michael Harrington started for Kansas City against Montreal and Chicago and provides an experienced replacement for Sinovic having been in MLS since 2007. Roger Espinoza | Sporting Kansas City’s Roger Espinoza was shown a red card in the 61st minute of last weekend’s loss against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. Vermes will have to make an adjustment to his three-man midfield for the second time this season. The red card marks the third straight game Kansas City has seen an ejection against the Fire. In the MLS Reserve League match the following day, Chicago and Sporting KC each earned an additional red card. Sporting KC won the Reserve League match-up 3-1 at the Fire’s practice field. Rapids | The Rapids played a midweek match on Wednesday against D.C. United at RFK Stadium. The outcome was a 2-0 loss for Colorado off goals from D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario and Hamdi Salihi. Sporting Kansas City also played D.C. on the road this season in their first match of 2012 but came home from RFK Stadium with a 1-0 victory from a Sapong header in the 93+ minute. Executive of the Year | Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman was named 2012 Executive of the Year by TheStadiumBusiness Awards. The award ceremony was held in Turin, Italy last Tuesday. The club’s state-of-the-art facility, opened to rave reviews in June 2011, has already hosted the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams, along with the English Premier League’s Newcastle United FC and Mexico’s Club Deportivo Guadalajara. The stadium was selected to host the group stage of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup and served as the site for the semifinals and championship matches of the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in April of 2012. The stadium is set to host Stoke City FC of the Barclay’s Premier League in August. LIVESTRONG Sporting Park also won the Community Award for a stadium, arena and major sports complex that has found new ways to support, enhance and improve its local community.
