SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY QWEST FIELD, Seattle, Wash. 7 p.m. PT (KONG; KSMO)

May 21, 2011 (WEEK 10; MLS Game 91)

Seattle Sounders FC remain home for a second consecutive weekend when they take on Sporting Kansas City on Saturday evening at Qwest Field. Sounders FC have played to back-to-back draws, last a 1-1 tie with the Portland Timbers in the opening match for the Cascadia Cup. Sporting have lost four games on the trot as their season-opening road trip continues. REFEREE: Geoff Gamble. Sounders FC have 14 points from 11 games on the season, sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH  Sounders FC took the lead in the 52nd minute. Roger Levesque lofted the ball forward to Fredy Montero, who outleaped two defenders to flick the ball on to Alvaro Fernández, who then had time to settle before lashing a left-footed shot inside Troy Perkins’ near post.  But Portland pulled level from yet another set piece. In an almost instant replay of the goal against Philadelphia a week earlier, Jack Jewsbury lofted a free kick toward Mamadou Danso in the heart of the area, and the Gambian center nodded it into the net.  Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made four changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Tyson Wahl came back into the back four for Jeff Parke and Leo Gonzalez, Brad Evans started in midfield for Erik Friberg, and Nate Jaqua came in up top for Roger Levesque.  SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-1-3-2): Kasey Keller - James Riley, Patrick Ianni, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Tyson Wahl - Servando Carrasco - Brad Evans (Roger Levesque 42), Osvaldo Alonso, Alvaro Fernandez - Fredy Montero, Nate Jaqua (Lamar Neagle 79). TEAM NEWS  Already missing attackers Steve Zakuani and O’Brian White, Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid was forced to make significant changes in his midfield. The first came before kickoff when Erik Friberg was injured the day before the game, then Brad Evans had to come off for an injury before halftime.

“Losing a player like Evans changes it and losing Friberg as we prepare for the game certainly changes things as well for us,” Schmid said Schmid said Friberg was close to being available for the Portland match and said there’s a chance he could be ready for the KC contest. It was the first game Friberg had missed this season (he did come on as a substitute once, April 22 vs. Colorado. “Friberg is actually making good progress with his ankle,” Schmid said. “It was almost touch and go if he could play (against Portland), but it was a situation we felt the risk at the end would be too great. While Schmid said Evans’ injury is a day-to-day situation, the midfielder said he hoped he would be out only a week to 10 days. “I don’t know why [it happened],” Evans said. “For some reason I made a cross. I don’t know if I caught it too much on my toe but I felt a twinge in my groin. I tried to come back on, but my body said no.” In addition, Schmid said: “(Mauro) Rosales, we’ll put through a week of training, so we’ll be able to determine that at the end of the week.” Rosales has played only 31 minutes over the last four matches with a hamstring injury. Since he was held out of the game vs, Chicago on April 9, Sounders FC designated player Alvaro Fernandez has scored three goals – his third coming against Portland. He has started the last four games in the Seattle midfield. For a second consecutive game, Schmid opted to pair Servando Carrasco and Osvaldo Alonso in central midfield. “For us, the big problem in the first half was having Carrasco and Alonso in midfield together. They both sat back too deep, so it was very tough for our forwards to have a connection for someone to play back to,” Schmid said. “… (O)ne of the two of them needed to push up more. That was something we talked about before the game, but in the heat of the game they forgot it.” The goal was the second this season conceded by Seattle from a set piece, the first coming on a direct free kick by Philadelphia’s Carlos Ruiz. “Their game is predicated around free kicks and set pieces. That's what their danger is. That's what they live for. The referee gave them quite a few. It seemed like our fouls happened for us on our (defensive) end of the field and theirs happened on their (offensive) end of the field,” Schmid said. “At the end of the day, we have to defend those things and we have to take care of that business.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City saw their losing skid reach four games, falling 4-1 to the LA Galaxy on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. Sporting have 4 points from 7 matches on the season, sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  Sporting KC took the lead courtesy of a gift, when Milos Stojcev swung a ball in from the right flank and Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez was able only to re-direct it into the corner of his own net.  The Galaxy hit for the equalizer before the end of the half. After David Beckham taken down inside the box, referee Baldomero Toledo immediately pointed to the spot, and Landon Donovan calmly buried the penalty kick.  LA broke the game open in the second half. First, Donovan and Chad Barrett combined on a give-and-go into the penalty area from where Donovan beat a helpless Eric Kronberg.  Then Juan Pablo Angel found the back of the net shortly after coming on as a substitute. Barrett sent Ángel through and he easily slotted home from inside the area.  Beckham then put an exclamation mark on the match when he buried a direct free kick from outside the left corner of the penalty area.  SKC boss Peter Vermes made three changes to the team that fell 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Eric Kronberg came in to don the gloves in place of Jimmy Nielsen, Roger Espinoza replaced Korede Aiyegbusi at fullback, and Milos Stojcev started for C.J. Sapong.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Eric Kronberg - Michael Harrington, Julio Cesar, Aurelien Collin, Roger Espinoza (Chance Myers 57) - Davy Arnaud, Stephane Auvray - Kei Kamara (C.J. Sapong 67), Milos Stojcev (Ryan Smith 65), Graham Zusi - Teal Bunbury TEAM NEWS  With three games remaining before they open the new Livestrong Sporting Park, Kansas City has lost four games in a row and is winless in the last six.  The last team with an extended road swing to start the season – the Chicago Fire in 2006, while Toyota Park was being finished – started with two wins and four draws in nine games. Sporting are the fourth club in MLS history to start the year with multiple games on the road while awaiting a new home: Columbus (1999), LA Galaxy (2003) and Chicago.

“We have been talking about the same thing about playing on the road, we have known that,” said Davy Arnaud. “It is not easy but at the same time it is not so difficult that we should turn in a second half performance that we did tonight. It is just not obviously what we wanted and it is very disappointing.” The four goals allowed were a season-high for Sporting, who have allowed multiple goals in five of their seven games this season. They still have yet to register a shutout – the only team in MLS still without a clean sheet this season. “I thought in the first half we played really solid. Getting it to 1-0 was good unfortunately we made a critical mistake right before the half and gave a penalty kick but coming in 1-1 was good,” said Peter Vermes. “The second half is what put the dagger in us and that is the part that gets frustrating.” Vermes gave Eric Kronberg his first start of the season, and just the second of his MLS career. His only previous start came in the season finale last year, a 4-1 win against San Jose. “It was nothing against Jimmy (Nielsen) at all,” Vermes said of the decision to play his backup. “I think Jimmy has been playing well. It was time for us to give (Kronberg) a game.”

H o M e s tA n d C o n t I n u e s v e R s u s K A n s A s C I t y resuming a three-match home stand, seattle sounders FC faces a foe that brings out the most riveting performances of the rave Green. sporting kansas City comes to the Xbox pitch at Qwest Field on saturday night for a 7 p.m. pT first kick. konG 6/16 will air the game live. sounders FC (3-3-5, 14 points) can jump from fifth to second in the Mls western Conference with a victory. They have lost only once in the last nine but have not won in their last three matches. sporting kC (1-5-1, 4 points) has lost four in a row and rests at the bottom of the east. seattle is unbeaten in its last four at home and completes the home stand on May 25, hosting defending Mls western Conference champion FC Dallas at 7 p.m. pT. For kansas City, this will be the eighth of 10 consecutive road matches to start 2011. it moves into its new stadium, livestrong sporting park, on June 9. seattle visits on august 6. each time sounders FC and kC have hooked-up in the past has produced a memorable 1-goal decision. seattle leads the regular season series 3-1-0 and also owns a U.s. open Cup play-in win versus the club formerly known as the wizards. Twice the rave Green have clinched a playoff berth by winning in kansas City. at home there have been a pair of last-minute game-winning goals. and kC can claim to be the first side to ever defeat seattle, doing so in the emerald City on april 11, 2009. last week's Cascadia Cup opener against portland produced a spectacle in the stands, however sounders FC was forced to settle for second straight draw, 1-1, before the 37th consecutive sell-out. The injury-plagued rave Green has not won since a 3-0 rout of Toronto FC on april 30. sporting kansas City fell, 4-1, at los angeles last week and are now winless since opening the season on March 19 with a victory over Chivas Usa. Calling saturday's match on both konG and 97.3 kiro FM is the voice of sounders FC, arlo white. The game will also be carried by la Gran D 99.3 FM. Great teams never rely solely on talent and most championship sides are forced to overcome some sort of adversity. Certainly sounders FC is facing the latter in spades this spring. seattle has fought on despite losing several key attacking players to injuries, including two for extended periods. Goals have been harder to come by, but a stout defense and a competitive character of the squad is braving the hard times. sounders FC is two points ahead of last year's 11-match pace, when the record was 3-5-3, and they have scored four more goals (13) while allowing three fewer (11).

The majority of goals this season have come from the midfield. alvaro Fernandez scored his third of the season against portland and Brad evans tops the side with four markers. steve Zakuani had scored twice before sustaining a fractured leg at Colorado on april 22. already midfielders account for nine of the team's 13 goals. last season Zakuani produced 10 of the 15 goals by midfielders and in 2009 those positions scored 11 altogether.

once on the injury list himself, forward Fredy Montero has managed to contribute since returning to action with a cast on his fractured right wrist. Montero assisted on the goal by alvaro Fernandez against portland, and he has now factored in sounders FC scoring in each of the last six games, including goals at Colorado and Columbus and earning the penalty kick at D.C. United. Montero's three assists tie him with Mauro rosales for the team lead. He tied his own team record by firing seven shots against portland.

get WeLL (soon) it's difficult to complete a puzzle when the pieces are missing. no sooner does sigi schmid fit one segment together and another comes apart. For a spell of 93 minutes in mid-april, schmid could choose from his full compliment of key players. Then came the loss of winger steve Zakuani (leg fracture) and forward o'Brian white (blood clot), followed by midfielder Mauro rosales (hamstring) and, last week, erik Friberg (ankle) and Brad evans (adductor). The good news is that the latter three could be available for selection by the end of the home stand, if not this weekend. only midfielder osvaldo alonso and goalkeeper kasey keller have played each match and both have played every minute. nineteen different players have started at least once and 23 have seen action.

n At e ’ s K C M A s t e R p I e C e s nate Jaqua has returned from offseason hip surgery to reclaim his starting job up front with Fredy Montero, and if history is any indication this saturday could mark his return to the scoring column. Jaqua has totaled five goals and two assists in his last seven matches against kansas City. He assisted on both goals in seattle's 2-1 win last october. Jaqua's run of form against the then-wizards began in 2006 while he played for Chicago. He scored twice for the Fire that season, then added a brace in 2008 while playing for Houston, and a single goal for sounders FC in their initial win over kC in 2009.

soMe MeMoRAbLe MoMents each of the five past meetings with kansas City has etched at least one moment into the memories of sounders FC players, staff and supporters. Foremost is likely the last time the two sides met on the Xbox pitch at Qwest Field. in the second minute of stoppage time, Mike Fucito cracked the winner off a quickly taken Brad evans throw, setting off pandemonium throughout the stadium. seconds later, kasey keller saved the win by stopping Chance Myers. The rave Green's visits to Communityamerica Ballpark were among the best of times as they celebrated clinching playoff berths on both occasions. in 2009 it was a come-from-behind, 3-2 effort by goals from roger levesque and nate Jaqua in the final 21 minutes. They left it late in again last season; sanna nyassi and alvaro Fernandez scored in the final half-hour of a 2-1 win. The first encounter with kC actually brought the sounders FC to earth after the expansion team started with three shutout wins in a row. keller was red-carded in the 30th minute for a handball outside the box and the visitors prevailed, 1-nil. Three months later, in the quarterfinal round of the open Cup, seattle avenged that loss. sebastien le Toux struck a penalty kick in the 89th minute for a 1-0 triumph.

Between the national anthem and kickoff last week against portland, sounders FC supporters demonstrated to the worldwide television audience that their passion runs deep, far and wide. First came the unfurling of a giant tifo in the City end by the north end Faithful, stating "we are Faithful; we are sounders." at the same time a mosaic of nine huge tifos was beginning to cover virtually the entire Brougham end. The emerald City supporters' display included portraits of past sounders greats Jimmy Gabriel, Marcus Hahnemann and preston Burpo, plus current icons roger levesque, Fredy Montero and assistant coach Brian schmetzer. Flowing down from the stadium's upper deck was a message ("Decades of Dominance" and a massive fist shown crumpling the Timbers' crest) directed toward portland's followers. altogether, the eCs spectacle measured over 23,000 square feet (more than a half-acre). it featured 2 miles of sewing, and approximately 3,200 man-hours to complete. it was four months in the making with shifts averaging 40 people working on the tifos at a time. eighty people were needed to execute the unveiling on match day.

Fernandez's goal came in the 52nd minute when roger levesque sent a ball into the box where Fredy Montero was able to win a header and flick it through to an unmarked Fernandez on the left side. Fernandez took a touch off of his chest and pounded a left-footed shot for 12 yards past portland goalkeeper Troy perkins, giving seattle the 1-0 lead. The Timbers' equalizer came in the 65th minute off a set piece when midfielder Jack Jewsbury sent a free kick into the box that found the head of a leaping Mamadou Danso who put the ball past kasey keller for his second goal in as many games. Montero launched seven shots, including a free kick late in the first half that bounced just wide of the near post. in the 56th minute, he blasted a right-footed shot from the top of the box that hit perkins square in the hands. in the 18th minute, portland's kenny Cooper sailed a leftfooted shot from distance, but a leaping keller made the save. sounders FC held a slight advantage in total shots, 11-9, and corner kicks (7-2) but portland held the advantage in shots on goal (5-2).keller recorded four saves. The victory swept the season series for Seattle, who have won each of the last three matches against Kansas City (four when including Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup) and both all-time matches in KC.

SINOVIC SIGNED | Sporting Kansas City announced the signing of defender Seth Sinovic last week. The 24-year-old entered Major League Soccer in 2010 as a second-round MLS SuperDraft selection. He appeared in 20 regular season matches, making 18 starts, for the New England Revolution as a rookie, and also earned four appearances in the 2010 SuperLiga.

The Sounders struck twice in the second half after a scoreless first 45 minutes. Sanna Nyassi opened the scoring in the 66th minute and Alvaro Fernandez doubled the visitors advantage 12 minutes later. Striker Teal Bunbury earned a penalty kick for Kansas City in the 84th minute, which captain Davy Arnaud converted to give his club a chance late, but striker Kei Kamara’s shot hit the post in stoppage time and Seattle held on for the away victory.

Sinovic, a Leawood, Kansas native and graduate of Rockhurst High School, attended Creighton University from 2006-2009 before being drafted by the Revolution with the 25th overall pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft.

KANSAS CITY CONNECTIONS • Sounders defender Taylor Graham began his career in KC, drafted in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by Kansas City. He played in 21 games over two seasons. • Seattle Sounders defender Tyson Wahl was also drafted by KC in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. He played 34 games for KC in three seasons before the Sounders took him in the 2008 Expansion Draft. • Seattle Sounders Manager Sigi Schmid coached Sporting KC striker Kei Kamara at Columbus during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. • Schmid replaced Sporting KC assistant coach Octavio Zambrano as manager of the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1999. • Sounders Head Fitness Coach David Tenney was formerly with Kansas City as a fitness and goalkeeper coach from 2007 to 2008. • Seattle Technical Director Chris Henderson played in Kansas City from 1999-2000 (68 appearances, 10 goals and nine assists in ‘00 MLS Cup season) and was an assistant coach in KC in 2007. • Sporting KC playmaker Ryan Smith and Sounders striker Steve Zakuani were both members of the Arsenal youth academy, and grew up in the same London neighborhood. • Sounders Director of Youth Development Darren Sawatzky played for the Kansas City Comets in 2001. • Seattle will make the return visit in the season series on Saturday, August 6th. It comes amidst a stretch of nine straight home games for Sporting Kansas City, after the June 9th opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

BRAVO’S RETURN? | Sporting Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo was listed as “probable” on Tuesday’s official Injury Report and could see his first action on Saturday since undergoing surgery for a sports hernia injury last month. Bravo has missed Sporting Kansas City’s last five MLS matches after being named MLS Player of the Week for scoring two goals in his MLS debut against Chivas USA in Sporting Kansas City’s season-opening 3-2 victory. Bravo joined KC as one of the most decorated players in Chivas Guadalajara history as the club’s second all-time leading scorer and is a well-known member of the Mexico National Team. Bravo has scored 16 goals for Mexico in 65 appearances, including two goals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. BUNBURY BUZZ | After scoring as a second-half substitute against Chicago in his return from a dislocated elbow suffered during the pre-season, Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury scored twice in his first start of the 2011 season in KC’s 3-3 draw at Vancouver. Making his first appearance in Canada since committing to the U.S. Men’s National Team, the Ontario-native recorded the first multi-goal game of his professional career. Bunbury also provided the game-winning assist in overtime of Sporting KC’s 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo earlier this month in the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifier and drew a penalty kick in the team’s 3-2 loss at New England. The fourth overall draft pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft out of Akron, Bunbury enjoyed a standout rookie season with five goals and two assists in 26 appearances. His five goals last season were the most by a KC rookie since Scott Sealy scored nine times in 2005.

During the offseason, Bunbury made his international debut for the U.S. Men’s National Team in a friendly against South Africa in November and scored in his second appearance on a penalty kick against Chile at The Home Depot Center in January. KAMARA KEY | Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara has also started the 2011 with his name often on the scoresheet. After recording two assists in the club’s season-opening 3-2 victory at Chivas USA, Kamara missed the team’s second match while with the Sierra Leone National Team for an African Cup of Nations qualifier but picked up right where he left off with his first goal of the 2011 season at Vancouver and a two-goal performance at New England on April 23rd, giving him the club’s last three goals scored until Omar Gonzalez’s own goal last week. Kamara is coming off a career year, scoring a team-high 10 goals and six assists, and has already accumulated eight points in six matches this season. Both marks from last season were personal career-highs for Kamara, now in his sixth year in MLS. Kamara has seven appearances for Sierra Leone. COLLIN AND CESAR AT CENTERBACK | Two of Sporting Kansas City’s new additions, French defender Aurelien Collin and Brazilian defender Julio Cesar, paired in central defense for the second straight week last Saturday. Collin, 25, joins Kansas City after previously playing for Vitoría Futebol Clube in Liga ZON Sagres, the Portuguese top flight. Cesar, 32, has spent time at Real Valladolid, Real Madrid, A.C. Milan, Real Sociedad, Benfica, Austria Wien, Bolton Wanderers, Tigres UANL, Olympiacos, FC Dinamo Bucuresti, Gaziantepspor and Maritimo Funchal.

ROAD TRIP | Sporting Kansas City continues its road trip to start the 2011 season on Saturday with the eighth of 10 consecutive away matches while the final touches are put on LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, the team’s new state-of-the-art, $200 million venue. KC held their first walkthrough at the stadium on Wednesday. The brand new stadium will open June 9th when Sporting KC hosts the Chicago Fire at 9:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2. LIVESTRONG Sporting Park will then host a 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup doubleheader on June 14th, featuring Canada vs. Panama, followed by the U.S. Men’s National Team vs. Guadeloupe. It is the longest stretch of away games in MLS history, topping the Chicago Fire’s nine-game road trip to start the 2006 season prior to opening Toyota Park. Kansas City is 60-125-52 all-time away from home, and went 4-8-3 on the road in 2010.

UPCOMING MILESTONES Sporting Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud is currently tied with Josh Wolff for 2nd on the team’s all-time goal scoring list with 43 career strikes...Arnaud is also fourth on the team’s all-time gamewinning goals chart with ten over his nine MLS seasons. His next game-winner will match Wolff for third all-time...Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen begins the 2011 season tied with Mike Ammann for fourth most shutouts in team history with 10...Nielsen is also sixth on the club’s all-time goalkeeper wins chart with 11 victories, one shy of Garth Lagerwey for 5th...Defender Shavar Thomas has played 7,471 regular season minutes in his Kansas City career and is 29 minutes shy of the 7,500 minute mark...
