United saw their undefeated run come to an end after three games, falling 2-1 to the New England Revolution on Saturday evening at Gillette Stadium. United are in a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with 18 points from 12 games. LAST MATCH The Revolution took the lead in the 55th minute. Diego Fagundez created space, stepping into the box and parting the defense who were able to close in before he could get a shot on, but Mullins was right on the doorstep to punch home past United 'keeper Bill Hamid. United drew level in the 73rd minute when substitute Fabian Espindola buried a cross from Cristian Fernandez, the first goal scored against the Revolution at home in more than six hours. But the Revolution struck back just five minutes later when Teal Bunbury’s low cross through the box was pushed off the line by Hamid, but right to the foot of Fagundez, who fired into the back of the net from the left side of the area. United finished the game a man down when Eddie Johnson was sent off by referee Juan Guzman for a serious foul. United head coach Ben Olsen made three changes to the team that knocked off the Houston Dynamo 2-0 at RFK Stadium. Alex Caskey came into the midfield for Lewis Neal, and Eddie Johnson and Collin Martin started up top in place of Fabian Espindola and Chris Rolfe. D.C. TEAM NEWS
MLS GAME INFORMATION
United saw their three-game undefeated run come to an end, their second loss over the last 10 games after losing their opening two matches of the season. “We’re still making strides in the right direction. I don’t feel like we got played off the field,” defender Bobby Boswell said. “I felt like we kind of shot ourselves in the foot a little bit. Some things didn’t go our way, but it wasn’t like it was a bad performance by our team tonight. I think we take some positives away from that, learn from the mistakes, and the ultimate goal is to be better and learn from it.” Fabian Espíndola scored the United goal, and now has a goal or an assist in eight of his last 10 games, with six goals and five assists for the season. “(Espindola) can change games and he did that again and he found himself in the right spot,” said United head coach Ben Olsen. “Again, we fought back at 1-1 and we still had a chance for two down the stretch, but we were good tonight, and overall I’m really happy with the way we played.” Chris Rolfe saw his string of seven consecutive starts – a regular in the first XI since April 2 – come to an end when he was sidelined with a hamstring injury. “I think the coaches made some good changes, and those changes they worked out one way or the other, maybe gave Fabi (Fabian Espindola) some rest so he can go on and score the goal, get some new legs in there, some new life,” said Boswell. “I thought it was all right, the final score is what killed us. Giving up a goal after we scored one, that’ll pretty much hammer you anytime you play on the road.” Collin Martin made his first appearance for United this season, partnering Johnson in attack and playing 60 minutes, and Alex Caskey also made his first start of the season, playing 63 minutes in a wide midfield role after four substitute appearances. “I thought (Alex Caskey and Collin Martin) both did fine. I thought they both worked extremely hard. You can see that Alex has been around a little bit and shown that he was certainly capable of starting for us,” said Olsen. “Collin is really a talent that’s exciting to have. We believe in him and believe he’s going to play for this team in the starting 11 one day, so it was good to get him some minutes.” Eddie Johnson returned to the starting lineup after a one-match absence, and it appears he would be unavailable for the Sporting contest after he was sent off in the 82rd minute by referee Juan Guzman – but the Independent Review Panel rescinded the red card, meaning he is eligible for this weekend.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City had their winless run extended to four matches with a second consecutive draw, reaching a 1-1 result with the New York Red Bulls on Tuesday evening at Sporting Park. Sporting sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with 19 points from 13 games. LAST MATCH After Sporting saw a couple of shots cleared off the line in the early exchanges, they took the lead after just nine minutes. Antonio Dovale took Benny Feilhaber's through ball in traffic, worked his way to a spot just outside the top of the restraining arc and unleashed a left-footed shot that curled into the lower left corner of Luis Robles' goal. The Red Bulls pulled even five minutes after the break. Bradley Wright-Phillips made a run to take Thierry Henry's through ball, drove on goal and placed his shot from right on the edge of the box just under SKC 'keeper Eric Kronberg. Sporting manager Peter Vermes made two changes to the team that reached a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC at Sporting Park. Aurelien Collin came into central defense for the injured Chance Myers, and Sal Zizzo started on a flank in place of Jacob Peterson. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Eric Kronberg - Igor Juliao, Kevin Ellis, Aurelien Collin, Seth Sinovic Benny Feilhaber - Paulo Nagamura, Alex Martinez (Jimmy Medranda 75) - Antonio Dovale, Dom Dwyer, Sal Zizzo (Soony Saad 72). TEAM NEWS Sporting have now four games without a win with the draw, their longest since going four games without a win early last season. “That last game, we should have taken three points,” midfielder Paulo Nagamura said. “I think this game was more even. We dominated the first half, and in the second half they created some chances and scored a goal. After that, it was just two teams with heavy legs trying to create something and not being successful. Definitely, it's frustrating because we were playing at home and we should go for the three points every time. But at the end of the day we got a point and that's going to count at the end of the year.” Antonio Dovale started his third consecutive match and his fourth since coming to MLS and Sporting, scoring his first goal. “He's very good with the ball. It's not easy to get the ball off him. He can give a final pass and as you saw he can score. He almost scored a second one in the second half,” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “He's just got a very high aptitude for the game, and I think it's because he's smarter than most of the players he's playing against.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Igor Juliao started his fourth consecutive game, playing right back, a position he could be ready to inherit following the season-ending injury to Chance Myers. “He's a good addition to the team and he's going to grow from game to game. Each time he goes out there he plays better and better and his confidence is increasing,” Vermes said. “The other thing I would say about him is that he's adapted and adjusted to our team very quickly, especially with the way that they play where he's from at Fluminense. He's adapted and adjusted very well.” Continuing in a deeper lying role in the Sporting midfield, Benny Feilhaber recorded his third assist of the season, his second in the last two games. Sal Zizzo returned to the starting lineup for the first time since May 14, playing 72 minutes as a winger. “We are getting the most out of what we can right now. And with the different people we have in the game and trying to deal with a lot of injuries in regards to the middle of the park, it's never easy,” Vermes said. Aurelien Collin returned to the starting lineup after missing the last two matches with a hamstring strain, partnering Kevin Ellis in central defense. “We've got to be a tougher team to play against going forward. We have to impose our style and get points from those games. We have two tough opponents coming up. Like I said, we're dropping too many points right now and we've got to be better than what we have been the last few games,” said defender Seth Sinovic. “It's been a collective concentration (struggle). We always talk about being prepared when we lose the ball, and we keep making mistakes and we're getting punished for them. That's what good teams will do against you, and that's happened for the last few games now.”

GAME NOTES DCU’s Distinct Accomplishment D.C. United is the only MLS team to feature four active players who have accomplished the 50 career goal feat -- veteran’s Fabian Espindola, Davy Arnaud, Chris Rolfe and Eddie Johnson. Together, that attacking line has scored 215 MLS career goals. D.C. United has four players in the top eleven on the all-time active players MLS scoring list, while no other team has more than one. Record-Setting Streak Since 2010, only two players have scored six or more goals each season, forwards Fabian Espindola and Alvaro Saborio. Between them, Espindola is the only player to reach the milestone with more than one team, having done so with Real Salt Lake and the New York Red Bulls. Espindola Joins 50-goal Club With his sixth goal of the season against the New England Revolution on May 24, forward Fabian Espindola became the 39th player in MLS history to reach the 50 goal plateau. Espindola is the fourth player on United’s current roster to hit 50 career goals, along with midfielders Davy Arnaud (50) and Chris Rolfe (51), and forward Eddie Johnson (65). Espindola Helping Out With six goals to go along with five assists, D.C. United forward Fabian Espindola has contributed to 65 percent of the team’s total goals scored this season (17). Sporting Kansas City forward Dom Dwyer, who’s tied for the lead in MLS scoring (10), has contributed to 55 percent of his team’s scoring. New-Look United After shutting out the Houston Dynamo 2-0 on May 17, D.C. United has managed to eclipse last season’s point total in less than a third of the games. Additionally, the team has already notched 17 goals this season, after scoring just 22 in 2013. Game-Winning Mentality D.C. United ranks third all-time in game-winning goals scored against Sporting Kansas City (219), behind only the Los Angeles Galaxy (257) and Columbus Crew (224). Fabulous Fabi After notching his fifth assist of the season in D.C. United’s 2-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on May 21, forward Fabian Espindola is now two assists shy of his career high (7) just 12 games into the season. Espindola notched seven assists in 30 games in his final season with Real Salt Lake in 2012. Last Meeting at RFK D.C. United earned its only point in three meetings against Sporting Kansas City last season in the two clubs’ 1–1 draw at RFK Stadium on May 19. After conceding an own goal to Sporting in the beginning of the second half, the Black-and-Red equalized with midfielder Kyle Porter, who scored his first career MLS goal. For United, it was its first points earned in over two months and the team was able to snap a seven game losing streak.
Veteran Experience in Defense D.C. United defenders Bobby Boswell and Jeff Parke both rank in the top five for games started as a cornerback since 2005, with 266 and 219 games, respectively. Combined, they have played the most games of any cornerback duo in the league in the past five seasons. Missing in Action Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler and midfielder Graham Zusi were named to the United States Men’s National Team’s roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Kansas City veterans have been with the national team since the start of preliminary camp at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Ca. In the national team’s 2–0 win over Azerbaijan on May 27, Zusi and Besler both started the game. Besler has made 14 career appearances for the United States, while Zusi has had 20 call ups. All-Time Record against Kansas City D.C. United’s all-time record is 18-20-10 against Sporting Kansas City. Since its first meeting with Sporting in 1996, United has gone 12-6-5 at home and 6-14-5 on the road. Constant Corners In 48 career meetings with Sporting Kansas City, D.C. United has attempted 246 corner kicks, putting the Black-and-Red at fourth all-time against the Wiz, behind only the Los Angeles Galaxy (317), Colorado Rapids (283) and San Jose Earthquakes (257). Penalty Production In 48 games played against Sporting Kansas City, D.C. United has scored from a penalty eight times. Only the Colorado Rapids have scored more goals off penalties against Sporting (11). All-Time Goal Scoring D.C. United ranks sixth all-time in goals scored (62) against Sporting Kansas City. Seaton Scores Lone Goal for Jamaica Men’s National Team D.C. United homegrown forward Michael Seaton has been selected to the Jamaica Men’s National Team roster for four friendly matches. Seaton scored the team’s lone goal in a 2-1 defeat against Serbia at Red Bull Arena on May 26, netting a well-directed header into the left side of the net for his second international goal in five appearances. The 18year-old will now travel across the Atlantic Ocean for three games: versus Switzerland in Lucerne on May 30, Egypt in London on June 4 and France in Lille on June 8. This spring, Seaton has scored three goals in four matches on loan to the Richmond Kickers. Collin Martin Debuts D.C. United midfielder Collin Martin made his 2014 MLS debut in the Black-and-Red’s game against the New England Revolution on May 24. Martin, who has spent the majority of the season on loan to the Richmond Kickers, started the game before being subbed off in the 60th minute for forward Fabian Espindola. Last season, Martin featured in seven games (four starts), recording an assist. Iron Man D.C. United midfielder Perry Kitchen is the only player on the 31-man roster who has played every minute for the club thus far (1,080). In his inaugural MLS season with United, 2011, the Kitchen became the only rookie in United’s 16-year history to lead the team in minutes played. (2,726). Four years later, Kitchen has registered 9,383 minutes with the first team, the most by any player on the current roster.

Sporting KC news & Notes
The U.S. began preparation for the World Cup on May 14 with a 30-player training camp at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad was cut to 23 players on May 22 and won their first pre-World Cup friendly 2-0 vs. Azerbaijan on Tuesday. The U.S. will face Turkey (June 1) and Nigeria (June 7) before arriving in Brazil on June 9 ahead of the 32-team tournament, to be held from June 12 - July 13. Besler, 27, has made 15 appearances for the U.S. since debuting in January 2013, including six FIFA World Cup qualifiers and all three knockout round games en route to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship. He most recently started alongside Zusi in the Americans’ 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan on Tuesday, and the U.S. is 10-1-3 with Besler in the starting lineup. He has appeared in 145 MLS matches (including postseason) in his career, earning MLS Best XI (2012, 2013), MLS All-Star (2011, 2013) and MLS Defender of the Year (2012) honors. Zusi has earned 21 appearances for the U.S. with three goals and four assists in his international career. He scored in the final two FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, highlighted by the game-winning goal against Jamaica at Sporting Park, to secure a first place finish in the Hexagonal for the U.S. He has played in 142 MLS matches (including postseason) with 18 goals and 40 assists. He was an MLS MVP finalist in 2012 and nominee for Best MLS Player at the 2013 ESPYS to go along with MLS All-Star (2012, 2013) and MLS Best XI (2012, 2013) recognition.

Sporting KC news & Notes (cont.) Chance Myers undergoes season-ending surgery
U.S. Open Cup opponent determined
Sporting KC defender Chance Myers successfully underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left ankle and will miss the remainder of the 2014 season. Myers suffered the seasonending injury in the 36th minute of Sporting KC’s 2-2 draw vs. Toronto FC on May 23.
Sporting KC will host Minnesota United FC (NASL) in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round on June 18, 7:30 p.m. at Sporting Park. Minnesota United defeated the Des Moines Menace (USASA) 1-0 in Wednesday’s third round matchup and currently sits atop the NASL (Division II) standings with a 5-1-1 record.
Sporting KC drafted Myers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. Over the past seven seasons, Myers has appeared in 123 regular season games and has started more than 100 games in all competitions. He re-signed with the club prior to the 2014 season after tallying two goals and three assists during Sporting KC’s MLS Cup championship campaign. The UCLA product has represented the United States at the U-18 and U-20 levels and trained with the USMNT during the 2014 January camp.
The U.S. Open Cup, recognized as U.S. Soccer’s national championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional teams affiliated with U.S. soccer. The oldest annual team tournament in American sports history has its origins in 1914 and is named after Sporting KC’s original founder Lamar Hunt. Sporting KC are two-time champions in the competition, winning the title in 2004 and 2012.
Dwyer on fire
CONCACAF conducted the offical draw for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League in Miami Wednesday night, placing Sporting KC in Group 2 alongside Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica) and Real Esteli FC (Nicaragua).
Dom Dwyer scored for the fourth straight MLS match in Sporting KC’s 2-2 draw vs. Toronto FC on May 23. In doing so, the English forward became the third player in Sporting KC history to score in four consecutive regular season appearances alongside Preki in 1996 and Eddie Johnson in 2007. Dwyer is second in the MLS Golden Boot race with 10 goals, and he has scored nine of Sporting KC’s last 13 goals in League play. He became the second fastest player in club history to reach 10 goals in a season, requiring just a dozen games to do so. Current D.C. United forward Eddie Johnson reached double-digit goals in just 10 matches for Kansas City in 2007.
Injuries and international duty test Sporting KC’s depth Through 13 games in the 2014 MLS regular season, Sporting KC has featured 13 different starting lineups. Peter Vermes’ personnel selection has been complicated by several factors throughout the year. In March, the club had to balance multiple competitions during the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. More recently, schedule congestion has come to the forefront with seven MLS games in May. To complicate matters, Chance Myers and Ike Opara have suffered season-ending injuries; Matt Besler, Graham Zusi and Lawrence Olum have seen extended international action; and Erik Palmer-Brown, Oriol Rosell and Aurelien Collin have served one-game suspensions, with the latter two also picking up minor injuries.
CONCACAF Champions League opponents determined
Deportivo Sapirssa has won three CONCACAF Champions Cup titles (1993, 1995 and 2005) and features five players on Costa Rica’s roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Earlier this month, Saprissa won their 30th league title in the Torneo de Verano final to become the most successful club in the history of the Costa Rican Primera Division. Real Esteli, the defending Clausura and Apertura champions in their domestic league, are the only Nicaraguan side to have participated in the competition and have qualified every year since the 2008-09 edition. Real Esteli will meet Sporting KC in the group stage for a second straight year after going 0-3-1 during the 2013-14 tournament.
Busy month of May concludes Sporting KC’s trip to D.C. United marks their seventh and final MLS match in the month of May. Peter Vermes’ men play no more than five League matches in every other month of the 2014 season. The busy stretch extends into June as the MLS Cup champions visit rivals Houston Dynamo on June 6 for a rematch of the 2013 Eastern Conference Championship. Sporting KC then has a three-week MLS break, during which the 2014 FIFA World Cup takes center stage.
Sporting Park sellout streak
As a result, 24 different players have started an MLS match for the club this season, most of all 19 teams. Sporting KC’s defense has been stretched most of all, with eight different players featuring in the centerback position during the 2014 campaign.
Sporting Park has sold out 44 straight MLS matches, including four playoff games. The last time Sporting KC didn’t play in front of a sellout crowd was March 25, 2012. In those 44 matches, Sporting KC is 24-9-11, has recorded 15 shutouts, and has outscored their opponents 57-34.
Kronberg excelling between the posts
Paying the penalty
In his first season as Sporting KC’s starting goalkeeper, Eric Kronberg is tied for the MLS lead with a 1.00 goals against average and five shutouts among goalkeepers with more than three matches played. He has allowed 13 goals in 2014, five of which have come from the penalty spot. His five victories are tied for third most wins in the League.
Sporting KC has conceded five penalty kicks through 13 matches this season, already fifth-most most for a single season in franchise history. The team conceded seven penalties in 1998 and 2007 and six penalties in 2000 and 2006.
First half lockdown Sporting KC has yet to concede a goal from the run of play in the first half during 2014, marking 17 consecutive matches during the MLS regular season that Sporting KC has not given up a such a goal in the first half dating back to 2013. The team allowed two first-half goals in their 2-1 loss at Chicago on May 18, but both were penalty kicks from Mike Magee.
Late-game goals hurting Sporting KC In three of Sporting KC’s four regular season losses, the opponent has scored the game winner in the 81st minute or later. Seattle grabbed a 94th-minute goal in the season opener on March 8, Teal Bunbury struck a 92nd-minute winner on April 26 to knock off his former club, and Cristian Maidana scored in the 81st minute to give Philadelphia a 2-1 road win on May 14. Sporting KC also conceded stoppage time equalizers to FC Dallas on March 15 and Toronto FC on May 23. Peter Vermes’ men have dropped seven points in the final 10 minutes of action plus stoppage time in 2014.

Sporting KC news & Notes (cont.) MLS All-Star fan voting kicks off
Makeshift centerback Ellis recalled from OKC Energy FC
MLS released the fan ballot on Wednesday for the 2014 AT&T MLS AllStar Game. The ballot features eight players from each of the 19 clubs as voted on by media. Sporting KC’s eight nominees eligible for selection are goalkeeper Erik Kronberg, defenders Matt Besler, Aurelien Collin and Seth Sinovic, midfielders Benny Feilhaber, Oriol Rosell and Graham Zusi, and forward Dom Dwyer. Fan voting on MLSsoccer.com lasts through July 11.
Homegrown right back Kevin Ellis rejoined Sporting KC May 16 after four weeks on loan with USL Pro affiliate OKC Energy FC. He has played in every game since his return, including two starts at the centerback position. The Kansas City, Mo. native started three of Sporting KC’s first four MLS matches in 2014 and scored his first goal for the club in the first leg of the 2014 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals vs. eventual champion Cruz Azul. He joined OKC Energy FC on loan April 21.
19-year-old Juliao impresses in first four starts Sporting KC defender Igor Juliao started his first game for the club in May 14’s 2-1 home loss to Philadelphia. He became the third youngest player in club history to start a league match (now fourth youngest after Erik Palmer-Brown’s debut on Sunday) and the youngest player in team history to go the full 90 minutes in a regular season contest.
Vermes’ men set records in 3-0 defeat of Montreal
The 19-year-old Brazilian wasted no time garnering League honors, as he was named to Sports Illustrated’s Week 11 MLS Best XI for two active displays on the backline (May 14, May 18). On loan from Fluminense FC through the end of 2014, Juliao has earned four consecutive starts in defense.
Sporting KC recorded a record-setting 3-0 win over the Montreal Impact on May 10. The MLS Cup champions attempted 803 passes and completed 739, both League records since the statistic was first tracked by Opta in 2011, for a 92 percent passing accuracy percentage. Midfielder Oriol Rosell led all players with 160 successful passes out of the 166 he attempted, setting single-game records by an MLS player since 2011. Sporting KC also had 78.18 percent possession, the highest percentage in an MLS match since 2011. Among midfielders with at least 100 completed passes in 2014, Rosell’s 87.05 completion percentage in the opponent’s half ranks second in the League behind Juninho (87.57).
17-year-old Palmer-Brown makes his debut
Miscellaneous stats
Sporting KC homegrown defender Erik Palmer-Brown earned his MLS debut and first start for the club in a 2-1 loss to Chicago on May 18. He became the youngest player in MLS history to start a regular season match as a defender. Palmer-Brown received a red card in the 64th minute after picking up his second caution of the match.

•
Sporting KC leads MLS in total passes (6,119), successful passes (5,053) and possession percentage (59.87%).

Sporting KC is in a four-way tie for most MLS cleansheets alongside Colorado Rapids, Real Salt Lake and Houston Dynamo.
•

Lopez, Duke and Kempin on loan Sporting KC has partnered with USL PRO clubs Orlando City SC and OKC Energy FC for the 2014 season. As part of the agreement, Sporting KC will loan players to the clubs to play games and gain experience throughout the year. Generation adidas member Mikey Lopez is with Orlando City SC, while OKC Energy FC features goalkeeper John Kempin and midfielder Christian Duke. Former Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen is the head coach of the expansion OKC Energy FC. Both affiliates were in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Third Round action Wednesday night. Orlando City beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) 4-1 and will travel to Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids in the fourth round on June 17. Midfielder Mikey Lopez has yet to feature for Orlando City in U.S. Open Cup play, meaning he can still participate in the competition with Sporting KC should he be recalled to his parent club. OKC Energy FC was less fortunate in the third round, as hosts Arizona United SC (USL Pro) triumphed 2-1 in extra time. Midfielder Christian Duke played all 120 minutes of the match and is therefore ineligible to participate for Sporting KC in the U.S. Open Cup this season. Goalkeeper Jon Kempin did not feature for Nielsen’s squad in the tournament and remains eligible to feature for his hometown club. Lopez has made eight league appearances and logged 149 minutes of action for unbeaten Orlando City SC, who currently sit atop the USL Pro standings (8-0-3, 27 points). Lopez registered his first assist with Orlando City in a 3-1 win over the Charlotte Eagles on May 21. At OKC Energy FC, Kempin has made seven starts with 22 saves and Duke has contributed one assist in seven USL Pro appearances (473 minutes).
