Sporting KC Game Notes | June 14, 2017 vs. Minnesota United FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes SO IT BEGINS

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES the U.S. National Team for World Cup Qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago on June 8 and Mexico on June 11. Neither Besler nor Zusi appeared in the U.S.’ 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on June 8 before Zusi earned his 48th cap by appearing off the bench late in the 1-1 draw with Mexico at Estadio Azteca on Sunday night.

Sporting Kansas City begins its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign on Wednesday with a clash against Midwestern rivals Minnesota United FC. Sporting KC are three-time champions of the 103-year-old tournament, having lifted the trophy in 2004, 2012 and most recently in 2015.

Besler and Zusi were both included in the USMNT’s provisional 40-man roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup this July, and they’re joined on that list by Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer, who could potentially earn his first full call-up to the National Team after the English-born striker became a U.S. citizen in March.

Sporting KC is 24-15-6 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup since first taking part in the tournament in 1996, including four penalty shootout victories in their six draws. Sporting KC claimed their two most recent U.S. Open Cup titles following penalty shootout victories: 3-2 over Seattle Sounders FC at Children’s Mercy Park on Aug. 8, 2012 and 7-6 over the Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium on Sept. 30, 2015.

Forward Soony Saad is currently with the Lebanon National Team for a 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Malaysia at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

That overall mark includes a 17-7-2 mark in games played in Kansas City, where Sporting KC advanced on penalties in qualifying against the Colorado Rapids at Shawnee Mission North High School in 2008 before winning the final against Seattle at Children’s Mercy Park in 2012.

Left back Tyler Pasher was included in Octavio Zambrano’s 27-man Canada National Team roster for a camp and friendly. Pasher scored in an intrasquad scrimmage on June 8 before Zambrano narrowed the roster down to 24 players - including Pasher - ahead of a friendly against Curacao at Stade Saputo in Montreal on June 13. Pasher was also named to Canada’s provisional 40-man squad for the Gold Cup.

Sporting KC hasn’t played an Open Cup fixture in Kansas City since the 2015 season, when Sporting KC hosted all four games en route to the victorious visit to Philadelphia in the final. The last Open Cup game played at Children’s Mercy Park was a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015 with Soni Mustivar, Benny Feilhaber and Krisztian Nemeth on the scoresheet.

RUBIO RETURNS TO 18 AFTER ACL INJURY

Sporting KC forward Diego Rubio returned to the gameday squad Saturday against the Montreal Impact for the first time since suffering torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee during training on Oct. 14, 2016. Rubio had last been included in the 18man squad when he appeared off the bench for the final eight minutes in a 3-1 defeat to the New England Revolution on Oct. 1, 2016. Rubio recorded three goals and one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions in 2016 after joining Sporting KC in March.

Last season’s campaign ended in disappointment as Sporting KC entered the tournament as holders of the title after their 2015 triumph, but were eliminated in the Fifth Round by the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on June 29, 2016. Brad Davis scored a consolation for a Sporting KC side that was overpowered by a brace from Mauro Manotas and a further goal by Alex.

Last September, the 23-year-old became the first player in club history to score in the MLS regular season, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League in the same year. He opened his 2016 scoring account in a 1-1 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 27, 2016 and notched the game-winner in extra time of a 2-1 U.S. Open Cup victory over Minnesota United FC on June 15, 2016. Rubio then tallied his first goal at Children’s Mercy Park in a 2-1 CCL defeat to Vancouver on Sept. 13, 2016.

FAVORABLE HISTORY AGAINST MINNESOTA

Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup encounter against Minnesota United FC is Sporting Kansas City’s third against the Minneapolis-based side in the space of four years in the knockout competition. Sporting KC hosted Minnesota at Children’s Mercy Park in 2014 before visiting Blaine, Minnesota to take on the side in 2016.

A native of Santiago, Chile, Rubio has netted 40 goals and added 16 assists since turning professional in 2011 at age 17. After rising from the youth ranks to the senior team at hometown club Colo-Colo, Rubio moved overseas to Sporting Clube de Portugal, where he scored 22 times for Sporting B from 2011-2015. The striker made 20 first-team appearances for Sporting while also going on loan to Romanian side Pandurii Targu Jiu in 2013 and Norwegian outfit Sandnes Ulf in 2014. Rubio earned three caps for the Chile Men’s National Team in 2011 at age 18 before playing eight matches at the U-20 level from 2012-2013.

Sporting KC won the first Open Cup meeting between the two sides comfortably at Children’s Mercy Park on June 18, 2014 as second-half goals from Alex Martinez and a long-distance strike from Soony Saad earned the home side a 2-0 victory as Sporting KC advanced to the Fifth Round where the club was eliminated by the Portland Timbers. Most recently, Sporting KC traveled to the National Sports Center Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota on June 15, 2016 and emerged victorious in a fiery affair. Sporting KC took the lead midway through the second half when Benny Feilhaber converted a penalty kick but the visitors were pegged back in the 81st minute when Christian Ramirez netted a spot kick of his own. Sporting KC found the winner in extra time when Diego Rubio struck his second goal for the club in the 109th minute. Referee Nima Saghafi showed 11 yellow cards in the contest, four to Sporting KC players and seven to Minnesota’s.

LOANEES PRODUCE FOR SPR

A pair of Sporting KC loanees appeared in the Swope Park Rangers’ 3-1 victory over Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Swope Soccer Village on Sunday, June 11. Goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas earned his fifth start of the 2017 USL campaign and posted his fourth win of the season. Zendejas made six saves on the day and only saw a shutout escape his grasp due to a 75th-minute own goal from center back Oumar Ballo.

Sporting KC has faced one previous iteration of a Minnesota team in the U.S. Open Cup on two occasions, falling to a 3-1 defeat against the Minnesota Thunder in the Quarterfinals of the 2005 Open Cup with Ryan Pore scoring the only goal of the game for the then Wizards. In 2009, Sporting KC emerged victorious on penalties after a 3-3 draw against the Thunder in the Fifth Round with Michael Kraus, Abe Thompson and Rauwshan McKenzie on the scoresheet.

Forward Cameron Iwasa, also on loan from Sporting KC, entered the game at the start of the second half in place of Swedish midfielder Robert Mirosavic. Iwasa wasted no time to make his mark on the game, firing a phenomenal strike into the top corner from 25 yards to give his side the lead in the 56th minute. It was Iwasa’s first goal for the Rangers while he awaits his debut with Sporting KC. The goal was nominated for USL Goal of the Week and is up against English Premier League legends Didier Drogba and Joe Cole.

MELIA SETS SEASON-HIGH IN SAVES

In Saturday’s 1-1 draw with the Montreal Impact, goalkeeper Tim Melia set a new season-high in saves with six. Prior to Saturday’s clash, Melia had posted five saves on four occasions in 2017 - at D.C. United (March 4), at FC Dallas (April 22), vs. Seattle Sounders FC (May 17) and at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (May 20). Despite conceding late in the draw with Montreal, Sporting KC still leads MLS with just 11 goals conceded in 16 games.

VERMES VERBATIM

On the frustrations of the game against Montreal… “The goal we gave up. It’s unfortunate, it’s something we obviously didn’t want to do, but that wasn’t a goal that they made by any means, that was a goal that we gave up on our part. They don’t deserve the points. They just don’t. They don’t deserve the point, that’s the frustration. We played more than well enough to win, and giving up the two points that way is hard to swallow.”

Melia’s career-high for saves in a game is seven, having produced that feat twice in the span of six weeks in the 2015 season. First his seven saves saw him shutout the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Sept. 9, 2015 before adding another sevensave performance as Sporting KC fell 1-0 to San Jose at Avaya Stadium on Oct. 16, 2015.

On mentality after giving up equalizer to Matteo Mancosu in the 82nd minute… “The most important play in this game is always the next one, so for me to look back, it’s wasted energy on my part. Last time I remember something like that happening was in 2010 when Colin played a ball back in Colorado against Colorado. It’s a shame, I know he didn’t mean to do it, we’ll just move on from there. It’s just a mistake. It happens. That’s not something that any player wants to do. It’s just an unfortunate situation.”

Tim Melia has started every game in goal for Sporting KC this season and leads the league in both shutouts (8) and goals against average (0.69). His 0.69 goals against average sees him lead all goalkeepers in Sporting KC and MLS history in that category for a single-season at this time. He’s lowered his all-time goals against average to 1.17 this year, placing him seventh in the league all-time. Former Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen leads the league’s all-time standings with 0.99.

On upcoming game against Minnesota United FC in the U.S. Open Cup… “When you’re at this level and you understand how you play, which again, we played more than well enough to win and come away with three points, and a mistake like that happens, there’s not that much really to bounce back from. We’ll just move on. You just get on with the next game and guys will be fine. Guys will be ready for the next game.”

TWO RETURN, TWO REMAIN

A pair of Sporting Kansas City defenders return to the club after spending the last fortnight with the U.S. Men’s National Team, while another two Sporting KC players remain with their national sides. Matt Besler and Graham Zusi were each called up to 3

Sporting KC Game Notes | June 14, 2017 vs. Minnesota United FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his ninth season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2017. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 135 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won three major trophies – the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regular-season standings in 2011 and 2012. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to six straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 110 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank eighth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions. He has coached 310 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, the Swope Park Rangers (USL) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.

Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Espinoza was an MLS All-Star in 2012 and helped lead the club to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title that season. He has made 199 appearances for the club in all

competitions, tallying four goals and 24 assists over seven seasons. In two years at Wigan Athletic, he logged 57 appearances, including eight in the UEFA Europa League, and started in the club’s 2013 FA Cup Final victory over Manchester City. Espinoza has earned 51 caps for the Honduras Men’s National Team since debuting in 2009. He has competed in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2012 Summer Olympics.
