Sporting KC Game Notes | June 28, 2017 at Houston Dynamo | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes HEADED TO HOUSTON IN U.S. OPEN CUP

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES HOW WE GOT HERE

Sporting Kansas City is heading to Texas for a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 tie with the Houston Dynamo this Wednesday at BBVA Compass Stadium with kickoff at 5:30 p.m. CT. Sporting KC are unbeaten in MLS regular-season play since opening their Open Cup campaign against Minnesota United FC on June 14, playing to a 0-0 road draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on June 17 before topping LA Galaxy at StubHub Center 2-1 on Saturday.

For the seventh straight season, Sporting Kansas City has advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, having last failed to do so in 2010 when the side suffered a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids in the Qualification stage. Since then, Sporting KC has won the U.S. Open Cup in 2012 and 2015, and has advanced at least to the Round of 16 every season. For the first time in five years, Sporting KC faced a fellow MLS foe in the Fourth Round this year, demolishing expansion side Minnesota United FC at Children’s Mercy Park on June 14. Sporting KC had played Minnesota twice in previous seasons in the Fourth Round but on each occasion, the Loons were members of the second-division North American Soccer League (NASL) when the sides met in 2014 and 2016. Within the last five years, Sporting KC also previously faced Orlando City SC in 2012 when that club was in the then third-division United Soccer League (USL) before taking on USL Premier Development League side Des Moines Menace in 2013 and USL team Saint Louis FC in 2015.

It’s the second straight season that Sporting KC will face Houston at BBVA Compass Stadium in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16, having fallen to a 3-1 defeat on June 29, 2016. Mauro Manotas and Alex gave the home side a 2-0 lead before Brad Davis pulled a goal back against his former club, but Manotas made sure of the Dynamo’s progression in the tournament by adding his second late in the game. This year’s Open Cup run also mirrors that of 2016 in that Sporting KC reached the Round of 16 by dispatching of Minnesota United FC in the Fourth Round. Should Sporting KC advance past the Houston Dynamo next Wednesday, Peter Vermes’ men would host the winner of the Colorado Rapids vs. FC Dallas showdown in the Quarterfinal stage to be held from July 11-12. Sporting KC has won the competition on three occasions: 2004, 2012 and most recently in 2015. Only the Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders FC have won the competition more often in the MLS era (1996-present) with four titles apiece while Sporting KC are the only MLS side to win the tournament every time the side has taken part in the final.

The last time Sporting KC took on a MLS side in their opening round of the tournament was in 2011, when Peter Vermes’ men faced Wednesday’s opposition, the Houston Dynamo, in the Qualification stage - where C.J. Sapong scored two minutes into extra time to guide Sporting KC to a 1-0 victory. The Dynamo arrived at the Round of 16 by dispatching NASL side North Carolina FC in an extra-time thriller on June 14 at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. After falling behind early, Houston fought back to take a 2-1 lead behind goals from Andrew Wenger and Dylan Remick before the second-division side responded with a 69th-minute equalizer to take the game to extra time. In the 109th minute, Memo Rodriguez struck from distance to seal progress for the Dynamo into the Round of 16 with a 3-2 victory.

Sporting KC is 25-15-6 all-time in the U.S. Open Cup, including a 8-8-4 record away from home and a 17-7-2 mark across various locations in the Kansas City area.

DOGGED DYNAMO

Sporting Kansas City has typically not enjoyed facing the Houston Dynamo throughout the club’s history, as the Texans are one of just five clubs that Sporting KC has a losing record against in the regular season. Sporting KC is 5-9-11 against the Dynamo all-time, and also has losing records against the Chicago Fire (14-26-11), D.C. United (20-21-13), the LA Galaxy (21-24-14) and Seattle Sounders FC (5-7-3).

ROGER OPENS HIS ACCOUNT

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza opened his account for the 2017 season on Saturday against the LA Galaxy with a well struck shot that snuck into the back of the net via the fists of Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop. The goal was Espinoza’s fifth in the regular-season for Sporting KC, while he’s also added 22 assists in his eight seasons with the club.

Included in that 5-9-11 record is an active six-game winless streak against the Dynamo in the regular season, with Sporting KC going 0-3-3 since their last victory over Houston - a 2-0 victory on June 6, 2014 at BBVA Compass Stadium. Last season, the two sides met twice in MLS play, with Houston claiming the first meeting 2-0 at home on May 7, 2016 before Sporting KC let a lead slip in stoppage time to draw 3-3 at Children’s Mercy Park on Sept. 9, 2016.

Espinoza has never scored more than once in a season, having tallied single goals in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016. Prior to Saturday, Espinoza’s last goal came in a wild 3-3 draw with Wednesday’s opponents, the Houston Dynamo, as he found the top corner with a thunderous strike to give his side a 2-0 lead on Sept. 9, 2016.

Sporting KC also has a losing record against the Dynamo in all competitions - going 9-13-12 which includes a 2-1-0 mark in the U.S. Open Cup. Sporting KC emerged victorios in the 2011 tournament, securing a 1-0 road victory at Aggie Soccer Stadium on April 6, 2011 in the Qualification stage of the tournament. Former Sporting KC forwards Teal Bunbury and C.J. Sapong combined for the latter to convert the only goal of the game in the second minute of extra time. Sporting KC next faced Houston on their way to raising the trophy in 2015, earning a 3-1 victory at Children’s Mercy Park behind goals from Benny Feilhaber, Dom Dwyer and Krisztian Nemeth.

Effervescent winger Gerso recorded his first regular-season assist of the year on the goal, having recently recorded his first assist in all competitions by setting up Dom Dwyer’s goal in the 4-0 rout of Minnesota United FC in the U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round. Gerso now has seven goals and two assists at the midway point of the season, having played primarily on the right wing. While Dwyer has been the side’s top goalscorer each of the last three seasons, Gerso currently holds that mantle with a one-goal lead both in the regular-season and in all competitions.

In the most recent Open Cup meeting between the two teams, it was Houston’s turn to exact some revenge as a brace from Mauro Manotas either side of an Alex header was enough to overcome Brad Davis’ tap-in against his former side as Houston eliminated Sporting KC from last season’s competition with a 3-1 victory in the Round of 16 at BBVA Compass Stadium.

VERMES VERBATIM

On the team’s road win against the LA Galaxy: “Well, look. It’s always good to get three points wherever you are. Home or away. I thought we’ve had a couple of games at home where we gave up a few points to where we should’ve gotten three, not one. Getting this game on the road makes up for a little bit of that. I thought we played very well in the game. I thought the fact that we scored early, they had a game-plan, they were sitting back and countering us, and the fact that we scored early, it made them rethink about what they wanted to do. We got the second one, and I knew at the second-half that they were going to come out and put everything on us, and they were going to step up high. It kind of changed for them, and I thought we handled it well, and at the end we were able to hang on and get the three.”

I WANT TO RIDE MY IKECYCLE

During Saturday’s 2-1 road win over the LA Galaxy, Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara scored a contender for goal of the season with a stunning bicycle kick that beat Clement Diop in the Galaxy goal to make the score 2-0 in favor of Sporting KC with halftime approaching. David Romney pulled a goal back for the hosts in the second half, leaving Opara’s glorious goal as the game-winner. The goal was set up by fellow center back Matt Besler, meaning that Besler has set up each of Opara’s two goals in the regular-season in 2017 - adding on to Opara’s gamewinner against Minnesota United FC on June 3. In fact, Besler has assisted on three of Opara’s last four regular-season strikes, with his long throw also finding the forehead of Opara in a 1-0 road win over New York City FC on March 28, 2015.

On the LA Galaxy’s strategy to defend instead of attack on a home game: “It has happened to us now a couple of times. As of late, for some reason, teams are kind of sitting back on us. But I thought again, we were really prepared. For we thought that was going to happen. So, the good thing is, the guys were prepared and I thought they handled it well. They managed the game throughout. And then, knowing that the second half we were going to have to change, because now they were going to step up and really put a lot of numbers forward, again, I thought we managed that too well.”

Opara is now tied for the team-lead alongside leading scorer Gerso for game-winning goals with two, while Besler tallied his second game-winning assist on the goal meaning he is also now tied for the team-lead with Roger Espinoza. The assist was Besler’s third of the season, having also helped set up Latif Blessing’s opener against Orlando City SC in the 2-2 draw at Orlando City Stadium on May 13, meaning the club captain is tied for the team-lead in assists - matching the total of three set by Benny Feilhaber and Graham Zusi. Opara is now tied for second for goals among defenders in MLS, only trailing Toronto FC left back Justin Morrow’s three.

On Ike Opara’s goal: “Ike’s a really athletic guy. The fact that he was able to pull that off doesn’t surprise me, but it was a very heads up play, because there were a lot of things that he could have thought about. He didn’t know if the keeper was coming, or where he was, all those things. But, just a really heads up and athletic play by him.” 3

Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his ninth season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2017. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 137 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won three major trophies – the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regular-season standings in 2011 and 2012. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to six straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 111 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank eighth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions. He has coached 313 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, the Swope Park Rangers (USL) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.

Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
