WHEN LAST THEY MET...
WHAT’S AT STAKE ON WEDNESDAY
Sporting Kansas City and Orlando City SC met in the third round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with Sporting KC earning a 3-2 victory at Sporting Park. Paulo Nagamura opened the scoring in first half stoppage time before a dramatic final 45 minutes sent Sporting KC through to the fourth round. Orlando City’s Kevin Molino equalized in the 55th minute, setting the stage for two goals from Sporting KC striker Soony Saad in a four-minute span. Despite going down a man in the 70th minute with the ejection of Anthony Pulis, Orlando City cut the deficit in half through Dennis Chin’s goal in the 84th minute. Jon Kempin made six saves in his competitive debut for the first team to secure the win.
The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday, June 26 and will play at the winner between Chicago/Columbus. The Fire host the Crew on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. CT at Toyota Park. Orlando City has never reached the quarterfinal round since starting play in 2011, while Sporting KC has reached the quarterfinals in eight previous tournaments. Orlando City are one of two USL PRO teams remaining in the tournament, and are in contention for $15,000 in prize money awarded to the Division III team that advances the furthest. The other USL PRO team still alive, Charleston Battery, play at Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.
SPORTING KC - ORLANDO CITY AFFILIATION
FOUR SPORTING KC PLAYERS ON LOAN TO ORLANDO
In January, Sporting Kansas City and Orlando City entered into a two-year partnership with the Lions becoming the official USL PRO affiliate of Sporting KC. Sporting Kansas City began developing a strong relationship with Orlando City Soccer Club during the team’s 2012 pre-season trip to Orlando, and returned to the area during the 2013 pre-season for the Disney Pro Soccer Classic. In addition to providing loan opportunities for select Sporting Kansas City reserve players, the technical staffs from both teams will pursue several strategic initiatives such as joint coaching seminars, business endeavors, scouting mechanisms and access to facilities.
In mid-March, Sporting Kansas City agreed to loan four players to Orlando City SC. Goalkeeper Jon Kempin, defender Yann Songo’o, midfielder Christian Duke and forward Dom Dwyer joined the Lions and have helped the club to a 10-1-2 record atop the USL PRO standings at the half-way point of the season. Dwyer leads all players in USL PRO with 15 goals and 31 points, breaking the USL PRO goal scoring record previously held by Jhonny Arteaga with 13 goals for FC New York in 2011. Stats for each player are below from the USL PRO season...
GET TO KNOW: ORLANDO CITY SC Orlando City is led by Manager Adrian Heath, the USL PRO’s Coach of the Year each of the past two seasons, and were crowned USL PRO champions in 2011. Winners of the Commissioner’s Cup each of the last two years for the best regular season record, Orlando City SC is once again atop the 13-team USL PRO standings with a 10-1-2 record in 2013. Key contributors for the club include captain Miguel Gallardo in goal and forward Jamie Watson, whose 20 points (seven goals, six assists) are second most in USL PRO. The team features several international influences, including Trinidad & Tobago midfielder Kevin Molino along with former Sheffield Wednesday teammates Luke Boden and James O’Connor. Midfielder Anthony Pulis is the son of former EPL manager Tony Pulis, who will be in attendance at Sporting Park on Wednesday. Off the field, Orlando City SC is aggressively pursuing a new soccer-specific stadium and MLS expansion agreement to bring MLS to Central Florida by 2015. Last week, the club hired Brett Lashbrook, who spent the last seven years at MLS’ headquarters in New York City working closely alongside MLS Commissioner Don Garber and MLS President Mark Abbott.
INTERNATIONAL DUTY Sporting KC will be without six players on Wednesday due to international duty: - Matt Besler (U.S. Men’s National Team) - Mechack Jerome (Haiti Men’s National Team) - Peterson Joseph (Haiti Men’s National Team) - Kei Kamara (Sierra Leone Men’s National Team) - Mikey Lopez (U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team) - Graham Zusi (U.S. Men’s National Team) Orlando City SC will be missing Jean Alexandre, who is also with the Haiti Men’s National Team alongside Jerome and Joseph.

The four players on loan to Orlando City SC will not be made available to play in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round match-up, based on an agreement between the two clubs. Sporting KC, who acquired defenders Lawrence Olum and Mechack Jerome from Orlando City, have the option to recall any of the four players during the loan period.
ORLANDO CITY CONNECTIONS Orlando City SC signed Brian Fekete in March, two months after Sporting KC drafted the University of Tampa product in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft. He appeared in three pre-season matches for Sporting KC. Orlando City SC midfielder Adama Mbengue was on trial with Sporting KC during the 2013 pre-season, appearing in five matches for Sporting Kansas City and scoring in a 3-3 draw with Toronto FC.
#USOC100: 100TH EDITION OF U.S. OPEN CUP The 2013 U.S. Open Cup, the 100th edition of the domestic tournament, began on May 7 and features 68 teams, the largest field in the modern era. All U.S. based Division I, II and III teams participate in the tournament proper (16 from MLS, six from the NASL and 12 from USL PRO), along with 34 amateur teams. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in American sports and is named after Lamar Hunt, the original founder of Sporting KC. The single-elimination tournament continues through the final on Oct. 1 or 2 with the winner receiving $250,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League and their name on the Dewar Challenge Trophy.
