SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs CHICAGO FIRE LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. 9 p.m. CT (ESPN2/ESPN Deportes/ESPN3.com) June 9, 2011 (WEEK 13; MLS Game 119) The league’s newest soccer cathedral opens when Livestrong Sporting Park makes its bow, as Sporting Kansas City meet the Chicago Fire. Sporting finally play at home after a record 10-game road trip to start the campaign, coming off a scoreless draw at Toronto FC. The Fire are in the throes of a club-record 10-game winless run, also coming off a scoreless draw, at home with Seattle Sounders FC. REFEREE: Michael Kennedy. But four of those encounters have been draws.  After going the first 10 seasons with just one win in Chicago, Kansas City has won on two of their last four trips to face the Fire (2008 and 2010), with a draw in a third visit.  Kansas City never defeated Chicago at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, with three draws and a loss in four all-time meetings.  Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. CHI: P4 W1 L2 D1 … Frank Klopas v KC: first game LAST MEETING 3/26: CHI 3, KC 2 (Chaves 34; Puerari 40; Pappa 60 – Besler 51; Bunbury 72)  Chicago went up a goal and up a man in the 34th minute, when Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo was sent off after pulling down Gaston Puerari as he raced into the area on a solo run. Fire forward Diego Cháves promptly buried the resulting penalty kick.  The Fire doubled their advantage in the 40th. Chicago midfielder Mike Videira played Puerari into the left side of the box, and the Uruguayan forward took one touch towards the middle before curling a 15-yard shot past KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.  Kansas City defender Matt Besler put Sporting on the board just after the break. Fire 'keeper Sean Johnson fumbled a low cross from midfielder Davy Arnaud and Besler jumped on the ball at the back post, tapping in from a few yards out.  But Pappa restored the 2-goal margin with an absolutely fantastic goal in the 59th minute. The Guatemalan midfielder collected the ball in the middle of Kansas City’s half and improbably wove through four Sporting defenders before firing a low right-footed toe-poke inside the left post from the top of the box.  Kansas City pulled a goal back in the 72nd minute. Halftime substitute Teal Bunbury collected an errant pass from Fire left back Gonzalo Segares in the middle of Chicago’s half and coolly slotted a shot inside the left post.  CHICAGO FIRE (4-4-2): Sean Johnson - Jalil Anibaba, Josip Mikulic, Cory Gibbs, Gonzalo Segares - Patrick Nyarko (Dasan Robinson 89), Michael Videira, Logan Pause, Marco Pappa - Diego Chaves (Dominic Oduro 89), Gaston Puerari (Orr Barouch 74).  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Scott Lorenz (Birahim Diop 84), Matt Besler, Roger Espinoza, Chance Myers - Stephane Auvray (Graham Zusi 69) - Davy Arnaud, Craig Rocastle (Teal Bunbury 46)- Milos Stojcev, C.J. MLS GAME INFORMATION

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City put an end to their 10-game road swing to start the season, playing to a scoreless draw Saturday with Toronto FC at BMO Field. Sporting have 6 points from 10 matches on the season, sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  Eric Kronberg made three saves in goal for Sporting Kansas City, including a stop in added time on a header from late-game substitute Doneil Henry.  Stefan Frei made two saves in the TFC goal, his best a save on a Teal Bunbury shot from outside the area midway through the second half.  SKC boss Peter Vermes made two changes to the team that came back for a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Eric Kronberg deputized in goal for Jimmy Nielsen, and Ryan Smith came into the lineup for Seth Sinovic.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-1-3): Eric Kronberg - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Michael Harrington - Davy Arnaud, Craig Rocastle (Luke Sassano 60) - Graham Zusi (Birahim Diop 85) - Ryan Smith, Teal Bunbury (C.J. Sapong 88), Omar Bravo. TEAM NEWS  Sporting come into their home debut having put together back-to-back results for the first time this season, the draw in Toronto following a 1-1 tie in Colorado.  “We took a bit of a dip losing a couple games in a row,” goalkeeper Eric Kronberg said. “I think we're finally on our way out of the hole and heading in the right direction. I don't think we're too happy with it, but I think we're happy with where we are going.”  The Wizards concluded their 10-game road trip to start the season – the longest in MLS history – with one win and three draws. The last team to open with an extended road swing – the Chicago Fire in 2006 – started with two wins and four draws in nine games. They finished the season in third place in the Eastern Conference.  Sporting are the fourth club in MLS history to start the year with multiple games on the road while awaiting a new home: Columbus (1999; 5-2 in 7 games), LA Galaxy (2003; 0-4-4 in 8 games) and Chicago.  “We could be a lot better obviously, we could have won all 10 games that would be the best thing but that is unrealistic, especially in a league where we have teams that only have two or less wins right now on the road,” manager Peter Vermes said. “The only difference is that they have played a lot of games at home as well. For us right now with a chance to come back home is going to be a good step in the right direction.”  Kronberg made his second start of the season in goal (his third career appearance since being selected in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft) and backstopped the club’s first shutout of the year. Sporting were the last team in MLS this season to keep a clean sheet.  “The clean sheet for us is a good thing. I thought the guys were pretty organized and balanced throughout the entire 90 minutes,” Vermes said. “Other than the one chance at the end, the header where they pumped the ball into the box, other than that, there really wasn’t much play.”  Kronberg was deputizing for Jimmy Nielsen, who remained in Kansas City, hospitalized with an infection. Vermes said he expected the Danish veteran to be available for the home opener.  “We have a lot of confidence in Eric and he has really grown in the last year,” Vermes said. “We had no concerns with him going into the game … We’re very fortunate to have two top-level goalkeepers.”  In nine previous opening games in stadiums specifically built for soccer since the start of the league, the home team has won five, with three draws. The only road team to win? Kansas City, in the 2007 opening of Toronto’s BMO Field.  “We lacked that final pass or shot, but still created some opportunities,” Vermes said. “But it’s not for us to drive the game away from home. We did a good job keeping the game compact.” CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire saw their winless streak hit 10 games, despite playing for another draw in a goalless result with Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday at Toyota Park. The Fire have 10 points from 12 matches on the year, sitting in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  The goalkeepers, Sean Johnson for Chicago and Kasey Keller for Seattle, were the heroes on the night. Keller made five saves on the night, most in the opening 45 minutes, including a couple of long-range efforts by Daniel Paladini.  Johnson made three saves for the game, two coming in a quick sequence early on, denying Sounders FC striker Lamar Neagle on both occasions.  Fire interim head coach Frank Klopas made one change to the team that came back for a 2-2 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at Toyota Park. Corben Bone came into the midfield for Marco Pappa, away on Gold Cup duty.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Sean Johnson - Bratislav Ristic, Cory Gibbs, Yamith Cuesta, Gonzalo Segares Logan Pause, Daniel Paladini - Dominic Oduro, Diego Chaves (Patrick Nyarko 54), Corben Bone (Gaston Puerari 67) - Cristian Nazarit (Orr Barouch 78). TEAM NEWS  The game was the coaching debut for Frank Klopas, who assumed the responsibilities on an interim basis after Carlos de los Cobos was relieved of his duties, just a little more than a year after taking the reins.  "We pushed the game and had opportunities. … That’s been the story for us right now. We always create opportunities, but we’ve got to finish some of those," said Klopas. "On the other hand, some of the things we worked on (such as) giving opportunities for goals didn't happen tonight and that's a positive."  While the Fire have not won since the second week of the season, they had still taken points in six of their last seven games after the scoreless draw with Houston. The only loss since April 23 came to Philadelphia, a 2-1 defeat on May 21.  “We know it hasn’t been good enough,” Fire captain Logan Pause said. “We know we have a long way to go. We also know a couple wins and we’re right back in it. We were hoping (vs. Seattle) we’d get the first one and start to get the ball rolling, but I think it was a good start. ... It’s exciting with a young group; everyone’s energetic and optimistic and hopefully we’ll turn things around.”  Goalkeeper Sean Johnson recorded his first shutout of the season in his second consecutive start after returning to the Fire lineup. Johnson had started the first four games of the season for Chicago before giving way to Jon Conway.  "I think our focus was on the defensive end to get a shutout," Johnson said. "The guys were committed early on. It's important – when the other team has chances – to communicate and to shut that down, make sure everybody's on the same page."  After the bright start in the first half, the Fire let their foot off the gas a bit after the break, despite the addition of three attacking options off the bench. The Fire had scored five goals over their previous three games.  "I thought we set the tone and we created the better chances than they did," said midfielder Patrick Nyarko, a second-half substitute. "We gave up nothing in the back. Everyone was scrambling. Everyone was covering for each other. I personally think it was our best game this season."  Even after the coaching change, Klopas made very few alterations to the lineup, the only change enforced with Marco Pappa away with the Guatemala national team in advance of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.  For a second consecutive match, Pause was in the lineup (after missing four starts), teaming with Paladini in a dual deep-lying midfield axis.  “Danny had a very good game,” Klopas said. “He has the ability out of the back not only to attack from behind, but also make those diagonal balls.” Said Paladini: “It’s basically [Logan Pause’s] job and mine to stop their offensive threats, and when we can to get into the attacking third. Tonight I found myself in some good spots and I took my chances.”

WHEN LAST THEY MET... Sporting KC suffered their first loss of the season at the Chicago Fire on March 26th. Playing short-handed following the ejection of Designated Player Omar Bravo in the 30th minute, Sporting scored twice in the second half but fell 3-2 at Toyota Park. Fire forward Diego Chaves opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 34th minute, before Gaston Puerari doubled Chicago’s advantage with his only goal of the 2011 season six minutes later. Sporting KC defender Matt Besler cut the advantage in half with his first career goal in the 51st minute, but Fire midfielder Marco Pappa notched the eventual game-winner in the 59th. Sporting striker Teal Bunbury, returning from a dislocated elbow suffered during the pre-season, scored the game’s final goal in the 72nd minute as KC lost in Chicago for the first time since 2007.

KANSAS CITY CONNECTIONS - Chicago Fire interim head coach Frank Klopas played in Kansas City in 1996 and 1997 as an original member of the club. He appeared in 54 games, making 41 starts, and recorded seven goals and 11 assists. - Sporting Kansas City defender Scott Lorenz grew up in Barrington, Illinois, approximately an hour north of Chicago. - Sporting Kansas City midfielder Milos Stojcev and Chicago Fire midfielder Bratislav Ristic are both Serbia natives. - Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury played for the Chicago Fire Premier (USL Super-20 League) in 2009. - Kansas City and Chicago faced off in the 2000 MLS Cup at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on October 15, 2000. Kansas City earned the club’s only MLS Cup championship with a 1-0 victory over the Fire on a goal by Miklos Molnar in the 11th minute. Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes and assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin both played in the match. - The Cup clash is at the root of the rivalry between the two clubs, which is also aided by the teams’ geographic proximity. Chicago is Sporting Kansas City’s closest Major League Soccer opponent at approximately 500 miles and more than 300 Sporting Kansas City supporters traveled to Toyota Park for the previous meeting in March. - Sporting Kansas City partnered with local Firehouse Subs restaurants for a yearlong promotion to Put Out the Fire. Customers receive a free medium sub sandwich with the purchase of chips and a drink on the day after any Chicago Fire loss this season. - Sporting Kansas City is also donating $500 to LIVESTRONG for every goal scored against the Chicago Fire during the 2011 MLS season. Entering Thursday’s match, the Fire have allowed 19 goals, amounting to $9,500.

With a second win of the season on the line for both clubs, Thursday’s primetime ESPN2 duel has a bit of added flavor due to Sporting Kansas City’s season-long smear campaign against the Men in Red. Prior to the Fire’s 3-2 victory on Opening Day at TOYOTA PARK March 26, Sporting Kansas City owner Robb Heineman issued a decree that for every goal scored against the Fire in 2011 the Kansas City club would donate $500 to LIVESTRONG. In addition, Sporting Kansas City partnered with Firehouse Subs to give away a free sandwich every time the Fire were defeated. QUICK KICKS vs. Sporting Kansas City (21-10-8, 77 GF, 49 GA)  FIRE vs. Sporting KC 14-3-2 (41 GF, 18 GA)  FIRE @ Sporting KC 7-7-6 (36 GF, 31 GA)  The Fire are 7-7-6 all-time at Kansas City, with the team previously playing at Arrowhead Stadium (1996-2007) and Community America Ball Park (2008-10).  Sporting is the MLS side the Fire have their highest all-time winning percentage against at .538.  The Fire are 2-2-2 all-time when taking part in a stadium’s first MLS game.

The Fire downed Sporting KC 3-2 on Opening Day 2011 at TOYOTA PARK, behind goals from Diego Chaves, Gaston Puerari and Marco Pappa.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (1-4-7, 10 pts.) enter their 14th season of MLS play after posting a 9-12-9 record in 2010. Disappointed with missing out on the playoffs for just the second time in club history, the Fire have made many changes to the roster for 2011, bringing in the likes of veteran U.S. defender Cory Gibbs, Croatians Josip Mikulic (defender) and Marko Maric (midfielder) as well as the Uruguayan strike tandem of Diego Chaves and Gaston Puerari. In all, the club is returning 13 players to the roster, meaning half the players opening the season are new to the club in 2011. 2010 MLS All-Star selection and Goal of the Year winner midfielder th Marco Pappa returns for his 4 MLS season and looks to build upon his team leading seven goals in 2010. Joining Pappa in the midfielder are 2010 Fire MVP and newly named captain Logan Pause and last season’s assist leader Patrick Nyarko, while 2011 MLS Combine MVP Jalil Anibaba will patrol the backline with offseason acquisitions Gibbs and Mikulic. TODAY’S TELECAST Today’s game is being broadcast nationally on ESPN2/ESPN Deportes with Adrian Healy and John Harkes calling the action from the booth. FIRE EARN 0-0 DRAW IN KLOPAS’ DEBUT AS INTERIM HEAD COACH Chances galore were had in Saturday night’s clash between the Chicago Fire (1-4-7, 10 points) and Seattle Sounders FC (5-4-6, 21 points) but it was goalkeepers Sean Johnson and Kasey Keller who stole the show in the 0-0 draw at Toyota Park. Starting his second match since earning the top job back, Fire second-year goalkeeper Johnson was called upon early when Sounders midfielder Mauro Rosales broke into the Fire penalty area off a throw-in. The Argentine cut the ball back at the end line before crossing for Lamar Neagle whose closerange snap header forced Johnson in a diving save to his right before the ball was cleared out of danger in the sixth minute. Johnson was called into service again just minutes later when Neagle broke into the box up the left and fired a belting rocket which the young U.S. international deflected out for a corner kick in the eighth minute. th

The Fire slowly took over control of the match and began to test veteran keeper Kasey Keller. In the 16 minute, a pinging ball in the Sounders box fell to central midfielder Daniel Paladini who fired a low drive from 25 yards out that Keller collected easily. th

Paladini tested Keller again in the 27 minute, this time off a corner kick that was partially cleared away to Corben Bone in the corner. The second-year midfielder collected the ball before passing back to an open Paladini who rocketed a long effort that forced Keller to make a diving save at his back post to keep the match level. Minutes later the two Fire midfielders connected again up the left as Bone put a ball through the legs of Sounders defender James Riley. Paladini ran th onto the ball and into the box before firing his drive just wide of the near post in the 29 minute Tied for the team lead in goals, Fire striker Diego Chaves got in on the action when right winger Dominic Oduro broke up his flank and squared a st centering pass. The Uruguayan striker hit a one-time effort which Keller was again equal to in the 31 minute, taking the teams into the half knotted at 00. Offensive subs were aplenty in the second half as Fire head coach Frank Klopas, in his first game as interim manager, and Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid both looked for the odd goal to earn three points. The best chance of the half came in stoppage time as one of the Fire’s attacking substitutes Gaston Puerari broke down the right, swinging in a bullet which just missed the head of a diving Dominic Oduro at the back post before referee Terry Vaughn blew the whistle for full time. MORE STADIUM OPENINGS For the third time in 13 months, the Chicago Fire finds itself as the visiting side in an MLS Stadium Opening when Sporting KC opens LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS Thursday night. The Fire previously helped open New York’s Red Bull Arena (March 26, 2010) and Portland’s JELDWEN Field (April 9, 2011) losing 4-2. The Fire are 2-2-2 all-time when playing the first MLS match in a stadium. See the results below: Date Opponent Result Stadium _______ 3/21/98 @ Miami 2-0 W Lockhart Stadium 4/4/98 vs. Tampa Bay 2-0 W Soldier Field 4/27/02 vs. New England 2-2 D Cardinal Stadium 6/11/06 vs. New England 3-3 D Toyota Park 3/27/10 @ New York 0-1 L Red Bull Arena 4/14/11 @ Portland 2-4 L JELD-WEN Field No Rest for the Weary… No matter the result on Thursday, Frank Klopas’ side won’t have any time to rest as the team will immediately travel to Ohio to renew a real rivalry with the Columbus Crew on Sunday. The short turn-around is never a welcome one by players, but historically at least, the Fire have done quite well when having to play the Crew on only three days rest, going 7-3-1 across all-competitions. Pappa reported to national team camp following the Fire’s May 28 match against the San Jose Earthquakes at TOYOTA PARK. The talented winger, who has tallied four goals during the 2011 MLS campaign, will likely miss at least three Fire matches while on national team duty with Los Champines. LOGAN PAUSE CHASING FIRE HISTORY th Nine-year Chicago Fire veteran Logan Pause tied Jesse Marsch for fourth on the club’s all-time regular season appearance list with his 200 match coming on March 26 vs. Sporting KC. The Fire captain then took sole possession of the fourth spot with his appearance in the club’s 2-1 loss to Seattle on April 9. Having averaged a minimum of 21 matches in each of his nine years with the club, if Pause’s form holds true for this season, he will move into second all-time in Fire regular season appearances. Next up in the captain’s sites is the player he modeled himself after, Chris Armas, who appeared in 214 regular season matches for the club from 1998-07. Below see the “Big Five” when it comes to Fire MLS and All Competitions appearances, along with their yearly averages of games played. **2011 not factored into average 2010 YEAR IN REVIEW The Fire ushered in a new era with the hiring of former El Salvador national team boss Carlos de los Cobos ahead of the 2010 campaign. The new manager brought in a new system to the club, while welcoming in Designated Players in Mexican striker Nery Castillo and Swedish winger Freddie Ljungberg. Despite the acquisitions, de los Cobos’ side came up just short of the 2010 MLS playoffs, missing the postseason for just the second time in club history. At season’s end, two legendary players announced their retirement, with the Fire bidding goodbye to U.S. giant Brian McBride and the last remaining “Fire Original”, defender C.J. Brown who spent all 13 seasons of his MLS career in the Windy City, appearing in 371 matches for the club across all competitions. FIRE PRESEASON NOTES In preparation for the 2011 MLS season, the Chicago Fire broke up the club’s preseason into three phases, the initial of which saw the side spend two weeks at the Bridgeview Soccer & Sports Dome – the first instance in 14 seasons the club has spent an extended amount of time training in Chicagoland. The team then spent 12 days in Ave Maria, FL, training and paying a visit to the club’s Juniors organization based in Naples while fitting in three friendlies. After a brief return to Chicago, the team set off for Phase 3 of preseason, making the club’s debut appearance in the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, SC. The Fire joined fellow MLS sides DC United and Toronto FC as well as tournament hosts, USL-Pro’s Charleston Battery in the four-team round robin tournament.
