PHILADELPHIA UNION vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY PPL PARK, Chester, Pa. 7:30 p.m. ET (TCN-Phi; KSMO)

June 22, 2011 (WEEK 15; MLS Game 139)

Philadelphia Union face a quick turnaround and cross-country trip when they return to PPL Park to take on Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday evening. Union saw their unbeaten streak come to an end at the weekend in a 1-0 loss at Vancouver. Sporting face a shorter trip to Philadelphia after coming off their first win ever at their new stadium, defeating the San Jose Earthquakes last Friday. REFEREE: Terry Vaughn. Union have 22 points from 14 matches on the year, now in second place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came when Davide Chiumiento dribbled through the Union defense, playing a give-andgo with Eric Hassli, then feeding an onrushing Rochat on the left. Rochat then unleashed a wicked curling strike from outside the box that Philadelphia 'keeper Faryd Mondragón had no chance of stopping.  Union manager Peter Nowak made three changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake at PPL Park. Stefani Miglioranzi, Justin Mapp and Veljko Paunovic came into the team for Michael Farfan, Keon Daniel and Danny Mwanga.  PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-4-1-1): Faryd Mondragon - Sheanon Williams, Carlos Valdes, Danny Califf, Jordan Harvey (Roger Torres 82) - Kyle Nakazawa, Stefani Miglioranzi (Danny Mwanga 46), Brian Carroll, Justin Mapp - Veljko Paunovic (Michael Farfan 59) - Sebastien Le Toux. TEAM NEWS  Union have continued their stout defensive play – with just a single goal allowed in each of the last three games – yet they’ve come away with just two of a possible nine points in that stretch.  "We’re like a charity right now, giving life and points to other teams," Union manager Peter Nowak said.  Veljko Paunovic was given his first start for Union, partnering Sebastien Le Toux from the start, then Danny Mwanga in the second half when he came on as a substitute and Le Toux moved back to the midfield.  "Maybe he was a little too far from Seba [Le Toux], but he did a good job to get the ball in good spots and spread it out," Nowak said. "I think that for the 60 minutes we prescribed for him in this game, he did pretty well."  Paunovic was deployed as an underneath striker in his first professional match since 2008.

"Is it behind the striker? Is it as a third striker? Or just as a pure striker?" Nowak said. "We've got to figure this out, and we've got the time right now - the games are coming fast, but during the week you always have some time to figure out the best combinations." Le Toux, who had three assists in the previous four games leading into the Vancouver match, still has yet to open his goalscoring account in 2011. He led Union with 14 goals last season. “Everybody is trying to help and stay positive,” Nowak said of Le Toux. “It’s very easy to drop your hat down and say, ‘You’re not scoring goals and we have to make a change.’ At some point we have to consider that, but as I said, we always try to stay positive and make sure that the players we’ve got have a fair shot at the positions they play. But the chances he had, especially at that point in the game, he had to finish.” Stefani Miglioranzi returned to the starting lineup, his first start since April 9 and his first appearance since coming on as a late substitute on June 4. He and Brian Carroll filled a deep-lying central axis in midfield. Philadelphia is one of five teams in MLS that has not lost back-to-back games this season, along with LA, New York, Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC. “I think everyone worked hard and put a lot of effort into the game and it’s unfortunate to come out of here with nothing,” Carroll said. “We’ve got to turn around quickly and get ready for the next game.”

SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City won for the first time in their new home and for a second game on the trot, a 1-0 win Friday against the San Jose Earthquakes at Livestrong Sporting Park. Sporting have 13 points from 13 matches on the season, sitting in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  The game-winning goal and first goal in KC's new home came in the 31st minute following a foul on Davy Arnaud on the right flank. Graham Zusi curled in the service to the front post, where C.J. Sapong fought off a challenge and managed to extend his left foot to apply the finish past San Jose ‘keeper Jon Busch.  SKC manager Peter Vermes made two changes to the team that rolled to a 4-1 victory over FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park. Jimmy Nielsen came in for Eric Kronberg in goal, and Omar Bravo replaced the suspended Milos Stojcev.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-4-1-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Graham Zusi (Kei Kamara 63), Davy Arnaud, Omar Bravo (Teal Bunbury 86), Birahim Diop - Luke Sassano (Julio Cesar 61) - C.J. Sapong. TEAM NEWS  Sporting have now won back-to-back games for the first time this season, and are unbeaten in six games in all competitions.  “What I would say to you is that this group has never lost the belief that they could play. They know they're a good team and now it is about grinding out results,” KC manager Peter Vermes said. “In this league, it is never easy. Anybody can beat anybody.”  C.J. Sapong will have the honor of scoring the first goal in Livestrong Sporting Park history, after 120 minutes of play in the new stadium. For Sapong, it was his first goal since scoring in his professional debut on First Kick, the 3-2 win at Chivas USA to start the season March 19.  “The confidence has always been there. We’ve always known, this is just reassurance. It’s different when you have fans calling your name, and when you know you can put results on the board, it makes everything so much easier,” said Sapong.  Sporting also kept a clean sheet for the third time in four games, and have allowed just three goals in the last six after conceding 17 in the first six.  “Five minutes into the game, I looked over my shoulder and (Aurelien Collin) and Steven Lenhart were fighting each other,” said defender Matt Besler. “It looked like a wrestling match. I knew, once I saw that, that he was maybe in his head a little bit.”  Graham Zusi continued his rich vein of form, following up his hat trick and assist performance in the win vs. FC Dallas with the assist on the game’s only goal against San Jose.  “Zusi has stepped up his game. It wasn't that he didn't have it in him, but I think he is now starting to feel his form. He has qualities, I've said this all along, on both sides of the ball. … He's dangerous. I think teams are now starting to see what we've seen all along. We've just been looking for it on a consistent basis and now we're starting to see that,” Vermes said.  Zusi has started the last five games in a row, and seven of the last eight, after not featuring in the first XI in the opening five games of the season.  “I’ve kind of found myself in a role where I’m getting some more starts. That always builds some confidence as it is,” Zusi said. “Every game we seem to be getting better and I think the whole team is playing with more confidence now. We need to continue that and we’ll get the results.”

Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting Kansas City – Wednesday, June 22, 2011 – 7:30 p.m. ET MINI HOMESTAND

LAST MATCH vs. KANSAS CITY

Philadelphia Union, having played four of six on the road, return home for two matches before another three match road-swing in July. The Union face Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday and Chivas USA on Saturday. Forced to play their first 11 matches on the road due to the construction of their new home Livestrong Park, Kansas City struggled out of the gate going 2-6-1 through their first nine. Kansas City collected points in five straight going 2-0-3 over that span. They are 2-6-3 on the road this year. Philadelphia are coming off a frustrating 1-0 loss at Vancouver on Saturday, June 18. After surrendering an early goal on a scorching blast from Vancouver’s Alain Rochat, Philadelphia was unable to find an equalizer as the Whitecaps defense held strong. Philadelphia have points in four of five and are undefeated at home this year, posting a record of 4-0-3.

The last time Philadelphia played Kansas City, the teams played to a 1-1 draw on September 4, 2010. Sebastien Le Toux and Davy Arnaud provided the goals in the match.

LAST MLS MATCH Philadelphia Union dropped one point behind the New York Red Bulls atop the Eastern Conference after dropping a 1-0 decision at the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. Entering the contest on a 14-match winless streak, Vancouver struck just 12 minutes in when Alain Rochat drove a blast from beyond the left corner of the box to the left of a diving Faryd Mondragón. The goal came just minutes after Philadelphia nearly opened the scoring after Veljko Paunovic, in his first game for the Union, sent Justin Mapp down the left wing. But Mapp’s cross to an open Sebastien Le Toux was cut out by defender Jay DeMerit. The Union had a pair of opportunities to equalize late in the second half. In the 78th, Brain Carroll took a pass from Le Toux and hit a low hard shot just wide of the near post. Three minutes later, it was Le Toux poking a deflected host just wide of goal. Scoring Summary: VAN – Alain Rochat 2 (Davide Chiumiento 6) 12 Misconduct Summary: VAN – Terry Dunfield (caution; Handball) 22 PHI – Carlos Valdes (caution; Reckless Tackle) 36 PHI – Brian Carroll (caution; Reckless Foul) 51

Coming into the match, Philadelphia were riding consecutive victories over New England and Chivas de Guadalajara (exhibition). Following some early pressure by Kansas City, the Union took control of the middle portion of the first half, creating numerous scoring opportunities. This offensive pressure was rewarded in the 33rd minute when Le Toux connected first-time on a pass from Danny Mwanga, beating goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen to put the Union up 1-0. The goal was the Frenchman’s 10th of the season, making him the first league player in 2010 to achieve double-digit goals and assists. Kansas City nearly equalized just a few moments later, but a goal-saving tackle by Michael Orozco Fiscal prevented a Ryan Smith goal. Nielsen played a very solid match for visiting Kansas City, making three crucial saves in the early stages of the second half to prevent the one-goal deficit from getting any larger. Kansas City were able to find the equalizer in the 71st minute of the match off the foot of Davy Arnaud. Exquisitely placed off a 30-yard free kick to the far post, Arnaud’s shot was just out of goalkeeper Chris Seitz’s reach. This proved to be the final goal of the match, as the two sides played out the remaining 19 minutes without breaking the deadlock. Scoring Summary: PHI – Sebastien Le Toux 10 (Danny Mwanga 4, Justin Mapp 3) 33’ KC – Davy Arnaud 4 (Unassisted) Misconduct Summary: KC – Roger Espinoza (caution; Reckless Foul) 64’ PHI – Michael Orozco Fiscal (caution; Reckless Foul) 71’ Kansas City Wizards – Jimmy Nielsen, Michael Harrington, Jimmy Conrad, Shavar Thoms (Jonathan Leathers 65), Roger Espinoza, Davy Arnaud, Craig Rocastle, Teal Bunbury, Stephane Auvray (Josh Wolff 61), Ryan Smith, Birahim Diop (Jack Jewsbury 74). REAL MADRID – UNION TICKETS NOW ON SALE Spanish soccer powerhouse Real Madrid FC will visit Philadelphia on Saturday, July 23 to take on the Philadelphia Union at Lincoln Financial Field as part of the 2011 Herbalife World Football Challenge. The Herbalife World Football Challenge features 10 matches across the United States and Canada during July and August. Real Madrid will also play two matches on the west coast, against the Los Angeles Galaxy and CD Guadalajara. Tickets are now available to the general public by visiting philadelphiaunion.com, philadelphiaeagles.com, or ticketmaster.com.

SCORE FIRST Philadelphia Union are yet to be undefeated when scoring first in the 2011 season. The Union have opened the scoreboard in eight occasions, earning six victories and two draws. ACURACY IS KEY Carlos Ruiz ranks 14th all-time in total shots on goal, having fired 240 as of June 20. Of his 451 career shots, 53 percent have been on target. The forward is only 21 SOG behind the 10th spot held by Edson Buddle.

PAUNOVIC DEBUTS IN MLS Recently signed striker Veljko Paunovic made his MLS debut as a starter against Vancouver last Saturday. The Serbian forward played for a total of 60 minutes, before being replaced by Michael Farfan.

GOLDEN RUIZ Union forward Carlos Ruiz played well for Guatemala in his nation’s four matches of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, going the full 360 minutes and picking up two goals, his 43rd and 44th in a Guatemala uniform. The 44 goals represent the most in Guatemala’s history. In the CONCACAF quarterfinal vs. Mexico from the New Meadowlands Stadium, Ruiz put his side ahead in just the fourth minute. But Mexico responded in the second half, finding the equalizer and winner to eliminate Guatemala. With their appearance in the quarterfinals, Guatemala, which failed to advance to the 2009 Gold Cup, matched its 2007 performance.

FAMILIAR FACE Kansas City defender Shavar Thomas appeared in one match for the Philadelphia Union last season. Thomas returns to Kansas City after captaining Jamaica to a spot in the Quarterfinals of the 2011 Gold Cup. Jamaica dropped a 2-0 decision to the United States on Sunday. Thomas was selected ninth overall by Philadelphia in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft from Chivas USA. On June 30, 2010, he was traded to his former club, Kansas City, in exchange for two MLS SuperDraft picks and allocation money. Thomas has appeared in 19 matches for Kansas City since the June 30 trade.

STAR-STUDDED UNION Six players on the Philadelphia Union have been added to the 2011 MLS All-Star ballot: Sebastien Le Toux, Danny Mwanga, Carlos Ruiz, Faryd Mondragón, Danny Califf and Justin Mapp. Fans can vote by going to PhiladelphiaUnion.com or the League’s main website, MLSSoccer.com. Regardless of method chosen, the tweet must contain @MLS AND #MLSAllStar. Limit one vote per tweet.

Philadelphia Union vs. Sporting Kansas City – Wednesday, June 22, 2011 – 7:30 p.m. ET FEW AND FAR BETWEEN

ADIDAS PREDATOR KICK-OFF EVENT As part of the nationwide introduction of the newest Adidas Predator soccer cleats, a quarter of Philadelphia Union players will sign autographs at Angelo’s Soccer Corner on Thursday, June 23. Amobi Okugo, Zac MacMath, Danny Mwanga, and Zach Pfeffer will sign at Angelo’s on 2074 Country Line Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Philadelphia have done a very solid job of keeping the opposition from scoring in 2011, conceding only 12 goals through 14 matches. This ranks second in the League, only behind Real Salt Lake’s eight goals allowed. Even more impressive is the fact that the Union have only given up four goals in seven matches at PPL Park this season.

IN-FORM FICTURE

UNION TO HOST ANDREW HICKS FOUNDATION Members of the Andrew Hicks Foundation will be attending Wednesday’s match against Sporting Kansas City. Created to honor the memory of late West Chester resident Andrew Hicks, the foundation aims to identify opportunities, organize volunteers and provide leadership to make a difference in the lives of youth in the City of Chester and the students at Henderson High School. At 5:30 pm, the foundation will be sponsoring a pep rally before the game with local families and children from Chester. Near game time, the group will march to the stadium together and enjoy the match against Sporting KC.

YOUNG SCORING REVOLUTION The Union continue to prove the importance of raising young talents, as five of their youngsters have scored their first professional goal this season. Keon Daniel, Michael Farfan, Gabriel Farfan, Roger Torres and Kyle Nakazawa have found the end of the net this year, while Danny Mwanga leads the Union scoring table with four tallies.

With Sporting Kansas City’s five-match unbeaten streak and Philadelphia only having lost once in their last five matches, the clubs have combined to pick up points in nine of their last ten matches. During this stretch, the two clubs combined for 16 goals scored and only eight goals conceded.

40-YEAR OLD GOALIE Goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon will be 40 years old when he steps on the field on Wednesday night, as the Union Captain celebrates his birthday on June 21st. The goalie has made a revolution in the Union’s defense after his arrival, as the 2010 expansion team finished last season with an 8-15-7 record and 49 goals against. The Union are 6-4-4 this year and have received 14 goals against so far. Mondragon began his professional career in the box with Deportivo of the Colombian First Division in 1990. He played for several other Colombian clubs before moving to Atletico Independiente of the Argentinean First Division in 1995. Mondragon then moved on to Spain to play for Real zaragoza FC of La Liga in 1999, FC Metz of France’s Ligue 1 from 2000-’01, Galatasaray S.K. of the Turkish First Divison from 2001-’07 (won titles in ‘02 and ‘06), and most recently FC Cologne of the Bundesliga from 2007-’10. Additionally, the veteran goalkeeper has been capped 50 times for the Colombian National Team since his 1993 debut. Mondragon competed with the Colombian National Team in the 1992 Summer Olympics and the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Mondragon was last in net for the national squad when Colombia met the U.S. Men’s National Team at PPL Park on October 12, 2010.

WHEN LAST THEY MET... September 4th 2010: Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud scored in the 69th minute to earn a 1-1 draw at PPL Park, following Sebastien Le Toux’s opening strike in the 33rd minute for Philadelphia. With the draw, Kansas City -- playing their first ever match at PPL Park -- won the season series against the expansion Union, taking four out of the six possible points after a 2-0 win at CommunityAmerica Ballpark earlier in the season. Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen made five saves in the draw, while his counterpart Chris Seitz recorded four stops.

KANSAS CITY CONNECTIONS - Defender Shavar Thomas was acquired by Kansas City from Philadelphia on June 30, 2010. Philadelphia selected the veteran center back in an Expansion Draft held on November 25, 2009 and he made one appearance for the Union before being traded to Kansas City, where he had previously played from 2004-2006. Thomas has appeared in 19 games since his return. - Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes will be returning to where his soccer career began on Wednesday. Vermes played high school soccer in Delran, New Jersey, approximately 15 miles from Philadelphia. After playing professionally in Hungary, Holland and Spain, Vermes was drafted by the New York/New Jersey MetroStars in the inaugural draft of Major League Soccer in 1996. - Philadelphia Union head of scouting and player development Diego Gutierrez began his MLS career in Kansas City from 19961997, before returning for a second stint from 2002-2005. Gutierrez, a Blue Springs High School and Rockhurst University alum, made 134 appearances including postseason, recording four goals and 13 assists. - Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi scored his first professional goal against the Philadelphia Union on June 10, 2010. Zusi has recorded two goals and two assists in Sporting Kansas City’s last two matches. - Philadelphia Union midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi scored his first professional goal against Kansas City on June 20, 2007 while playing for the Columbus Crew. - Philadelphia Union defender Danny Califf scored his first career postseason goal against Kansas City on October 3, 2000 in the first overtime of a 2-1 win for the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY HEADLINES SKC ON STREAK | Sporting Kansas City are unbeaten in their past five MLS matches (2-0-3). After three consecutive draws -at Colorado and Toronto, then home to Chicago -- Sporting have back-to-back victories, winning 4-1 at FC Dallas and most recently with a 1-0 victory over San Jose on Friday at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Kansas City has allowed just two goals in their past five games. BACK ON THE ROAD | After opening LIVESTRONG Sporting Park with a scoreless draw against the Chicago Fire and a 1-0 victory over San Jose on Friday, Sporting Kansas City returns to the road for their 12th of 17 road games in Major League Soccer this season. The team’s 10-game trip to open the season was the longest stretch of away games in MLS history, topping the Chicago Fire’s nine-game road trip to start the 2006 season. Kansas City is 61126-54 (.365) all-time away from home, and is 2-6-3 (0.318) on the road in 2011. The Eastern Conference is 9-31-29 (.341) in away matches during the 2011 season, for an average of 0.81 points per game. KEY ABSENCES | Sporting KC will again be short-handed for Friday’s match. While Stephane Auvray (Guadelouope) and Shavar Thomas (Jamaica) return from the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, defender Roger Espinoza and Honduras will face Mexico on Wednesay at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas in the semifinals. Additionally, midfielder Craig Rocastle is expected to miss six to eight weeks after suffering a right knee sprain while with Grenada in the 2011 Gold Cup. Manager Peter Vermes will also be without central defender Aurelien Collin, who will serve a mandatory one-game suspension after receiving his fifth caution of the season on Friday in the club’s 1-0 victory over San Jose.

DEFENSIVE DISPLAYS | After going the first nine games of the 2011 season without a shutout and giving up 17 goals in the first seven matches, Sporting Kansas City has three shutouts in their past five games. Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen recorded his first shutout of the 2011 season on Friday in a 1-0 home win over San Jose. ZUSI SHINES | Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi has two goals and two game-winning assists in the team’s last two matches. Zusi was the star in Kansas City’s 4-1 win at FC Dallas, scoring a brace -- his first career multi-goal game -- including a free kick from 45-yards out. On Friday, Zusi provided the free kick for C.J. Sapong’s game-winning goal in the 31st minute of the 1-0 win.

NOTEWORTHY MILESTONES - Sporting Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud is tied with Josh Wolff for 2nd on the team’s all-time goal scoring list with 43 career strikes and 4th on the team’s all-time game-winning goals chart with 10. His next game-winner will match Wolff for 3rd all-time. - Arnaud has played 18,973 regular season minutes in his KC and MLS career, and is 27 minutes from surpassing the 19,000 minutes played mark. Only two players -- current assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin and defender Nick Garcia -- have played more than 19,000 minutes in a KC uniform. - Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen is tied with Garth Lagerway for 5th on the club’s all-time goalkeeper wins chart with 12. - Sporting Kansas City have recorded 698 assists in 16 seasons of action, two shy of the 700-assist mark. Sporting Kansas City will become the 8th of Major League Soccer’s 10 original clubs to break the barrier: New York Red Bulls (704), Colorado Rapids (706), San Jose Earthquakes (715), Columbus Crew (751), FC Dallas (772), LA Galaxy (791) and D.C. United (811).
