SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs CHICAGO FIRE LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. June 29, 2012 (WEEK 17, MLS Game #148) 7 p.m. CT (NBC SN) Midwestern rivals Sporting Kansas City and the Chicago Fire meet for the second time this season when the clubs face off Friday at Livestrong Sporting Park in front of an NBC Sports Network audience. Sporting are back home after a twogame road swing that ended in a 4-0 loss at Philadelphia, though they advanced to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals at home at midweek. The Fire are coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season, going a man down and holding out for a 2-1 home win vs. Columbus last weekend. REFEREE: Baldomero Toledo. Kansas City hasn’t defeated Chicago at home since 2007. The teams have played to draws in four of their last five meetings in KC; the Fire took a 2-0 win there in 2009. Last year’s meeting, a scoreless draw, was the grand opening of Livestrong Sporting Park. Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. CHI: P6 W1 L3 D2 … Frank Klopas vs. KC: P2 W1 L0 D1 LAST MEETING (MLS) 5/12: CHI 2, KC 1 (Grazzini 61; Oduro 81 – Convey 31) Sporting KC opened the lead in the 31st minute when Roger Espinoza pulled back a rolling pass from the right corner and Bobby Convey lashed it home first-time from the heart of the penalty area. But it all went pear-shaped for the visitors over the final half-hour. First, just after the hour, defender Aurélien Collin took down Dominic Oduro in the penalty area, and Grazzini buried the ensuing penalty kick. A minute later, SKC went a man down after Roger Espinoza was sent off by referee Jose Carlos Rivero for an elbow to Grazzini’s face. Sporting were able to hold out until the 81st minute, when Patrick Nyarko picked Kei Kamara's pocket just outside the six-yard box on the end line. Nyarko sent the ball into the path of an onrushing Oduro, and he bundled the ball over the line from six yards out for the winner. CHICAGO FIRE (4-3-1-2): Sean Johnson - Jalil Anibaba, Arne Friedrich (Dan Gargan 29), Austin Berry, Gonzalo Segares - Logan Pause (Rafael Robayo 71), Pavel Pardo, Marco Pappa - Sebastian Grazzini (Federico Puppo 80) - Patrick Nyarko, Dominic Oduro. MLS GAME INFORMATION
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City saw their four-game unbeaten streak come to crashing halt, falling to a 4-0 defeat by Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at PPL Park. Sporting have 29 points from 13 matches, in third place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH Union took the lead with the first opening-minute goal in club history. Raymon Gaddis chased down a long ball and played the ball across the face of goal, where Lionard Pajoy managed to keep the ball in play. Jack McInerney latched onto the loose ball lashing a shot into the back of the net from close range. McInerney showed off his poaching ability again just before the end of the first. A Freddy Adu service in the 43rd minute took a deflection and found defender Carlos Valdés, whose attempt on net was stopped. McInerney, though, was there to gobble up the rebound. Union made the lead 3-0 with about 20 minutes to play. Substitute Antoine Hoppenot made a nifty cutback move in the box and was taken down by SKC defender Aurélien Collin, drawing a penalty kick, which converted by Pajoy. Then, in the 87th minute, Hoppenot grabbed a goal of his own when Michael Farfan sent him in alone on goal, giving the forward time and space to loft a shot over KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made five changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Seth Sinovic came in at left back for Michael Harrington; Julio Cesar and Graham Zusi started in midfield for Michael Thomas and Peterson Joseph, and Kei Kamara and C.J. Sapong started on the flanks for Soony Saad and Jacob Peterson. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Lawrence Olum, Aurelien Collin, Seth Sinovic - Julio Cesar (Michael Thomas 64), Roger Espinoza (Jacob Peterson 84) - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, C.J. Sapong (Soony Saad 74) - Teal Bunbury. TEAM NEWS It was the first loss for Sporting since May 12, four games in league play and six games in all competitions. “We weren’t good. We just weren’t good tonight,” said Sporting manager Peter. “We were sluggish. That was the biggest thing. We just weren’t ready for the game. That’s my fault, and I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.” It was also the first shutout for SKC since a 2-0 home defeat by Montréal on May 5, which the second of backto-back shutout defeats. The game was the second in a two-game road trip for Sporting that began at midweek with a 1-1 draw in Seattle, followed by a cross-country flight to face Philadelphia. “I’m sure it had something to do with it, but I don’t want it to be the excuse,” he said. “I’m sure it was the culmination of quite a lot of things: going from Kansas City to the Pacific Northwest and then flying again, changing temperature by like 35 degrees. It’s a big thing. But at the end, we just didn’t play well. They were first to the ball on many occasions, and they scored the goals.” The four goals allowed by Sporting were the most since a 4-1 defeat by the LA Galaxy last May 14 in Carson. The last time KC had been defeated by as many as four goals came Aug. 1, 2009 in a 6-0 loss at FC Dallas. “That early goal put us in a hole,” Vermes said. “The one right before halftime hurt us and put us in deeper. It was just a lot to dig out of. We didn’t play well. The other team played better, and they deserved the three points." After ringing in the changes in Seattle, Vermes returned mainly to his first-choice lineup in Philadelphia. Kei Kamara made his first start since May 27, out of the first team for two games because of international duty. “We have a lot of depth on this team and we are good enough to play whether it is a week apart or three days apart. We just got a little bit unlucky tonight and they came out (the Union) and took care of their chances,” said Michael Thomas. “We just need to move on and get a couple results as quick as we can.” On Tuesday, Sporting advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup with a 3-0 win against the USL PRO Dayton Dutch Lions in a quarterfinal at Livestrong Sporting Park. C.J. Sapong scored in the fifth and 59th minutes, while Graham Zusi netted in the 56th, sending Sporting on their way to a date with Philadelphia Union. Here’s the Sporting team: Jimmy Nielsen; Seth Sinovic, Lawrence Olum, Matt Besler (Konrad Warzycha 68), Michael Harrington; Michael Thomas, Peterson Joseph, Graham Zusi (Roger Espinoza 59); C.J. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 74), Soony Saad, Jacob Peterson CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire won for a second consecutive match, surviving playing a man down for an hour for a 2-1 win against the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Toyota Park. The Fire are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 24 points from 15 games. LAST MATCH The Fire took the lead in just the second minute when Marco Pappa’s right-footed blast from 25 yards was too hot for Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and flew into the back of the net.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
The home side then doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Sebastian Grazzini sprung Dominic Oduro with a through ball, and Oduro lashed it past Gruenebaum from inside the area. The match turned in the 29th minute when Gonzalo Segares’ studs-up challenge caught Crew midfielder Kevan George on the inside of the knee, and he was shown red by referee Armando Villarreal. Six minutes later, Tony Tchani put the Crew on the board, beating Sean Johnson with a low shot after receiving a pass from Chris Birchall and blowing by two Fire defenders. But the 10-man Fire held out the rest of the way. Fire head coach Frank Klopas made no changes to the team that posted a 3-1 win against the New York Red Bulls at Toyota Park. CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Sean Johnson - Dan Gargan, Austin Berry, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares (sent off 29) - Logan Pause, Pavel Pardo - Patrick Nyarko (Arne Friedrich 72), Sebastian Grazzini (Chris Rolfe 59), Marco Pappa - Dominic Oduro (Rafael Robayo 80). TEAM NEWS The win in Columbus marked the first time this season the Fire have won back-to-back games, and the winning streak comes after their first back-to-back losses of 2012. “We started off well, then things turned for the worse. It’s never easy playing shorthanded, and obviously, we gave up that goal. We wanted to go in at halftime with a clean sheet,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “I thought our will not to give up and pull away a win was fantastic. I’m proud of the guys. For me, that’s the difference - successful teams have the will to win games.” Marco Pappa’s fourth goal of the season was a stunning blast from all of 25 yards – and came with his right foot, not his preferred side. Of Pappa’s 24 career goals in Major League Soccer, 10 have come from outside the penalty area. “Scoring a goal with my right foot was unbelievable,” Pappa said. “It definitely surprised me, but this is soccer.” When Segares was sent off after 29 minutes, it meant an opportunity for Arne Friedrich to make his first appearance since May 12, missing five games with a hamstring injury. “I told Frank if he needed me for 20 or 30 minutes, I’d be there, but for a longer time, I’m pretty tired and still need some training sessions,” Friedrich said. “The muscle is good, which is the most important thing to me.” Said Klopas: “He told me if there was an opportunity to get him in, to get him in. His experience obviously paid off in the end. Coming into the game today, he told me he felt great. Plus, his ability in the air helped because the changes they made showed that they would be playing direct at that point. Our ability to compete in the air is not one of our strengths with the size of our team.” After Friedrich’s injury, the same back four had started all six games, conceding nine goals in that time and not keeping a clean sheet. With Segares suspended, Jalil Anibaba is likely to move to right back with Friedrich and Austin Berry partnering in the middle. “It’s all starting to come together now,” Berry said. “[The break] gave us some time for me and Jalil to kind of work on the cohesiveness in the back. … It’s taken some time, but I think we’re really moving well and jelling right now.” Added Anibaba: “We’ve been working really hard together to keep things tight in the back. I think we complement each other well. I think it’s a good option for our coaching staff. It’s a good opportunity for us to push the envelope.” Dominic Oduro regained the team lead with his fifth goal, his first since May 12. Sebastian Grazzini set it up with his second assist in as many games, his first helpers since May 4. “We’re staying concentrated during games,” forward Patrick Nyarko said. “We could have easily held our heads down, especially going down a man and giving up a goal right after. We could have given up. … I think, now, guys understand that you can’t do it individually, you have to do it as a team.”

Chicago Fire earned the 2-1 victory in the last meeting between the two sides. Sporting Kansas City got on the board first with a goal from Bobby Convey in the 31st minute. The goal marked his first since joining Sporting KC in the off-season. Roger Espinoza and Kei Kamara each picked up an assist on the play.
• • •
In the 61st minute Sporting KC’s Aurelien Collin committed a foul in the penalty box which resulted in a penalty kick for Chicago. Sebastian Grazzini converted the PK to even the score. Just moments later, Roger Espinoza picked up a straight red card after colliding with Grazzini near the center circle. After the ejection Sporting Kansas City conceeded their second goal of the match in the 81st minute when Patrick Nyarko won the ball off Kei Kamara and played a simple pass to Dominic Oduro for the easy finish. Despite the 500+ Sporting Kansas City fans that traveled to Toyota Park to support the team, the ten man Kansas City side couldn’t get the late equalizer and the score remained 2-1 at the final whistle.

While with the Revolution, Seth Sinovic was teammates with Chicago Fire defender Cory Gibbs and midfielder Michael Videira. Gibbs was born in Plantation, Florida, just three hours south of Orlando, FL, the birth place of Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi. Chicago Fire starting goalkeeper Sean Johnson played in the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifiers with Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury at the end of March in Nashville, TN. Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jay Nolly played collegiate soccer at Indiana University with Sporting Kansas City forward Jacob Peterson. The two led the Hoosiers to back-to-back National Championships in 2003 and 2004. Sporting Kansas City midfielder Paulo Nagamura and Chicago Fire midfielder Daniel Paladini were teammates in 2006 at the LA Galaxy and again in 2008 with Chivas USA. Fire midfielder Victor Pineda and Sporting KC goalkeeper Jon Kempin are both the first home grown players for their respective clubs. Kempin is the youngest player on the Sporting Kansas City roster while Pineda is second youngest on Chicago after Fire recently added Kellen Gulley to their list of home grown players. Chicago Fire defender Dan Gargen and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Bobby Convey are two of the more veteran players set to play on Friday, both having played for multiple teams in MLS before ending up with their current clubs. Both Gargen and Convey were born in Philadelphia, PA. Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes and Chicago Fire head coach Frank Klopas were roommates when they played for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Frank Klopas played for Kansas City from 1996-1997. Klopas scored seven goals and tallied 11 assists during his two seasons with Kansas City. Sporting Kansas City defender Michael Harrington and Chicago Fire midfielder Corben Bone were both members of the Region III ODP team in 2003. Both boys went on to play in the ACC at the universities of North Carolina and Wake Forest respectively. Fire striker Jalil Anibaba transferred to the University of North Carolina for his senior season (2010), however, Anibaba and Harrington’s (20032006) time in school did not overlap.
Bobby Convey scored his first goal since joining Kansas City in the last match-up against Chicago Fire on May 12, 2011. Roger Espinoza earned his first assist in 2012 in the last meeting with Chicago Fire on May 12, 2011. Espinoza received a red card against Chicago Fire the last time the two teams played. Collin committed a wreckless tackle in the penalty box resulting in a penalty kick for Chicago which was converted by Sebastian Grazzini in the two teams last meeting.

Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | June 29th, 2012 vs Chicago Fire | www.SportingKC.com
Sporting Kansas City News, Notes and headlines Results | Sporting Kansas City currently sit in third place of the Eastern Conference with a record of 9-4-2 (29 points) one point behind D.C. United and New York Red Bulls. The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to begin the season. However, Kansas City experienced a slight decrease in their momentum losing three games in a row before earning a draw against Western Conference foe Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The momentum was back in Kansas City’s favor as the team won two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup games against Orlando City SC and Colorado Rapids and added two MLS victories against the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC. Sporting KC then went on the road and earned a tie at CenturyLink Field against Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders. The club has nine wins this season after just 15 matches. It took them 25 games in 2011 until they got their ninth win on August 21, 2011. However, in their most recent MLS match Sporting Kansas City weren’t so fortunate, suffering a 4-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. The club recovered quickly when they returned to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park to face the Dayton Dutch Lions in Open Cup competition, earning a 3-0 victory on Tuesday. Physical Play | Sporting Kansas City has received a red card in the last three consecutive matches against Chicago Fire, which brings the club’s total to 10 in the series, most of any MLS opponent. In addition to the red card received by Roger Espinoza in the two teams last meeting, six yellow cards were distributed in the match. The following day in Reserve League action, two soft red cards were issued and an additional seven yellow cards. 22 Days | Sporting Kansas City is in the midst of a seven-game stretch in just 22 days. The club plays six MLS games in the span and one Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarter final. In this stretch Sporting Kansas City’s depth has been tested significantly especially in their 1-1 draw at CenturyLink Field against Seattle Sounders FC when Vermes started a line-up comprised of many new faces in efforts to rest some bodies. Six for All-Star | Sporting KC has six players up for the AT&T MLS All-Star Game of 2012. Nominated players are goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, defender Aurelien Collin, midfielders Roger Espinoza and
Graham Zusi, and forwards Kei Kamara and C.J. Sapong. Fan voting continues until Monday, July 2nd online at www.MLSsoccer.com and also by texting the player’s last name to 22442. Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup | Sporting Kansas City advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup after garnering victories against Orlando City SC and the Colorado Rapids in the third and fourth rounds respectively. Sporting KC hosted Orlando City SC at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on May 29th earning the 3-2 victory on a goal from Paulo Nagamura followed by two more from Michigan native Soony Saad. A week later Kansas City was home again in the fortress that is LIVESTRONG Sporting Park as they defeated a familiar MLS foe, the Colorado Rapids 2-0. Sporting KC defender Aurelien Collin was able to get on the end of a Graham Zusi free kick. Collin’s header was initially blocked by Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens, but his slight touch only guided the ball into the post before bouncing off the back of his head and into the back of the net to give Sporting KC the 1-0 lead. Teal Bunbury added an insurance goal in the 79th minute to boost Sporting KC’s lead to two, where it would stand at the final whistle. The quarterfinals were held on June 26th against the Dayton Dutch Lions at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Sporting Kansas City earned the early lead when C.J. Sapong was able to redirect a shot by Seth Sinovic. The scoring continued early in the second half when Graham Zusi hammered a shot from 20 yards out to beat Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams. It was Sapong again on the third tally as he headed home a Soony Saad corner kick. With the win, Sporting Kansas City advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals and will face the Philadelphia Union on July 11th at PPL Park.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (7-5-3, 24 pts.) enter their 15th season of MLS play after rebounding midseason to post a 9-9-16 record, which left the side three points outside of the playoffs in 2011. Locking up the likes of Pavel Pardo and Logan Pause this past offseason, the team returns the entirety of its starting eleven to Toyota Park in 2012, while adding Uruguayan striker Federico Puppo, Brazilian midfielder Alex and Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo to support the Ghanaian tandem of Dominic Oduro and Patrick Nyarko. The team also reinforced their defensive corps in the offseason by adding German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich as well as two young defenders via the MLS SuperDraft in center back Austin Berry and left back Hunter Jumper who will be expected to provide cover for the likes of Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares and Dan Gargan in 2012.
CHICAGO FIRE – SPORTING KANSAS CITY SERIES The Chicago Fire and Sporting Kansas City meet for the second of three games during the 2012 MLS regular season Friday evening at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The Fire were victorious in the first meeting between the two squads 2-1 on Saturday, May 12.

QUICK KICKS vs. Sporting Kansas City (9-4-2, 29 pts) • The Fire hold a 22-10-9 all-time MLS Regular Season record against Sporting Kansas City, including a 7-7-7 record in matches played away from home. • In the first matchup between the two squads this season, the Fire downed a 10-man Sporting Kansas City 2-1 at Toyota Park May 12. Sporting KC drew first blood in the 31st minute when Bobby Convey’s strike found the back of the net. The Men in Red would fight back in the second half when Sebastian Grazzini converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute. One minute later Sporting KC would lose a man as Roger Espinoza was shown a straight red card following a hard challenge on Grazzini at midfield and Dominic Oduro found the eventual game-winner in the 81st minute to give the Fire the 2-1 victory. • The Fire will face Sporting Kansas City three times in the MLS Regular Season. After hosting Sporting KC in May, the Men in Red will travel to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park twice on Friday, June 29 and again on Friday, September 28.

TEN MAN CHICAGO FIRE EARN HARD-FOUGHT 2-1 VICTORY OVER COLUMBUS CREW The Chicago Fire received first half strikes from Marco Pappa and Dominic Oduro before a red card ejection to Gonzalo Segares forced the team to battle out a gutsy 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew (5-5-4; 19pts.) Saturday night at Toyota Park. For the second match in a row the Fire tallied inside the first five minutes when Marco Pappa intercepted an errant pass from Crew midfielder Tony Tchani near the center circle. The Guatemalan international went unchallenged through midfield before unleashing a rocketing 30-yard blast past Andy Gruenebaum and into the top right corner to give the Fire a 1-0 lead in the 2nd minute. Things settled down with both sides playing a lot of possession before the Fire came close in the 20th minute. A series of headers from Patrick Nyarko and Dominic Oduro saw the ball fall for Sebastian Grazzini. The Argentine collected the ball before slotting Oduro through behind the backline and in alone on Grunebaum, but the Crew ‘keeper did well to cut the angle and force Oduro’s effort wide left of goal. The Ghanaian attacker came close two minutes later when a long throw-in from Dan Gargan bounced towards the back post. Dominic Oduro nodded a looping header across goal and off the opposite post before the ball was eventually cleared by Crew defender Josh Williams. Oduro would finally breakthrough in the 26th minute as Crew defender Sebastian Miranda headed a ball into the path of Grazzini. The Argentine playmaker strolled towards goal before slotting Oduro through and this time he made no mistake, sliding his effort under Gruenebaum to take the score to 2-0. Just when it looked like the Fire had put a dominant mark on the match, defender Gonzalo Segares intercepted a pass from Meram out of midfield and followed the ball before making a late tackle on Tchani. Without hesitation, referee Armando Villareal went to his back pocket to show the Fire left back a straight red card, taking the Fire down to 10 men in the 29th minute. The Crew found new life with the man advantage almost immediately. Meram collected a pass out of midfield and took the space in front of him before firing a hard, bouncing effort that Johnson did well to hang onto in the 33rd minute. The visitors would pull one back as Eddie Gaven played a quick pass to Chris Birchall on the right. The Trinidad & Tobago international played the bal square to Tchani into the box where he slid his effort under Johnson in the 36th minute. Despite the disadvantage the Fire nearly restored the two-goal lead in the 41st minute when a whipping corner from Grazzini picked out a charging Jalil Anibaba at the near post but the second year defender nodded his effort inches wide. Tchani came close to a first half brace just before the break. Winning a 50/50 challenge with Pavel Pardo, the Crew midfielder drove towards goal and unleashed a rocket that Johnson tipped just over the bar to take the Fire into the half with a 2-1 lead. Just like he ended the first half, Tchani almost equalized to start the second. Nemanja Vukovic’s swung-in corner kick found the head of Julius James but was blocked by Pardo. After the ball bounced around the box, the Cameroonian midfielder pounced but fired his blast over goal in the 48th minute. The best chance of the half came in the 57th minute when a Vukovic free kick from 30 yards away was flicked by Williams to the back post but Johnson again denied the Crew with a diving reaction stop to his right. Playing compact, the Fire didn’t cause much danger in the second half but did threaten in the 61st minute. Vukovic misplayed a ball in the back that Oduro ran onto, cut past James into the box before the Crew defender tackled him in the penalty area but Villareal signaled for play to continue. The home side did well to kill the game through the waning moments with the last chance for the Crew coming in the 85th minute. Second half substitute Ethan Finlay sent in a quick cross which found Tchani but the midfielder could only get a slight touch to the ball which looped straight to Johnson to give the Fire a hard-fought 2-1 victory. FRIEDRICH RETURNS The Fire’s German defender Arne Friedrich made his return to the pitch on Saturday when he entered the match in the 72nd minute for Patrick Nyarko. This was Friedrich’s first appearance for the Men in Red since suffering a hamstring injury in the first half of the Fire’s May 12 match against Sporting Kansas City. The two-time World Cup veteran missed five games while injured. KLOPAS’ KANSAS CITY TIES In his four years in MLS, Fire head coach Frank Klopas represented both Chicago and Kansas City for two seasons apiece. Klopas tallied seven goals and 11 assists in 49 appearances with the Kansas City Wizards in 1996 and 1997. In the following two years, Klopas contributed six goals and five assists in 40 appearances with the Fire. Klopas and Peter Vermes, Sporting KC’s head coach, represented the United States National Team eight times together from 1998 and 1994. Team USA went 3-3-2 in those matches, with Klopas netting three goals, including a brace in a 5-1 CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying win over Jamaica August 13, 1988 in Fenton, Mo.
