SPORTING KC U.S. OPEN CUP HISTORY
Sporting Kansas City is set to take on FC Dallas in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals on Tuesday night at Children’s Mercy Park in a matchup between the last two champions of the century-old tournament. Sporting KC hoisted the trophy in 2015 before FC Dallas did the same in 2016. History favors Sporting KC both in the regular season and in the U.S. Open Cup, with the side holding a slender 23-22-12 lead in the all-time regular-season series between the two sides, and has also won the only two showdowns in the U.S. Open Cup in 2004 and 2015 - Sporting KC won the title in each of those years. Sporting KC holds a 17-8-7 mark against FC Dallas at home in all competitions: going 14-8-7 in the regular season, 1-0-0 in the MLS Cupl Playoffs and 2-0-0 in the U.S. Open Cup. Sporting KC first dispatched the then Dallas Burn by a 4-0 scoreline in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals on Aug. 4, 2004 before claiming another four-goal victory with a 6-2 win in the Round of 16 on July 1, 2015. #SKCvFCD: Recent Meetings (SKC leads 23-22-12 in regular season)

#SKCvFCD: PLAYER HISTORY Regular Season • Sporting KC midfielder Benny Feilhaber leads the team with four goal and six assists against FC Dallas. Feilhaber’s four goals and six assists are both his most against any MLS club. In all competitions, Feilhaber has four goals and seven assists in his last nine games against Dallas. • Defender Graham Zusi has three goals and five assists against Dallas, including a two-goal and one assist performance in a 4-1 road win on June 12, 2011. He also recorded assists on both goals as Sporting KC earned a 2-1 win at Children’s Mercy Park on March 25, 2012. Zusi had one goal and two assists in the 4-0 rout at home on May 29, 2015. • Forward Dom Dwyer has three goals in eight games against FC Dallas, with two coming in the 2016 season - both in a 2-2 draw at Toyota Stadium on Aug. 13, 2016. Dwyer has seven goals in his last seven games against Dallas in all competitions. • Defender Kevin Ellis has one goal and one assist against FC Dallas, both coming in the same game. He first tallied the game-winning assist on Krisztian Nemeth’s goal before adding a strike of his own as Sporting KC topped Dallas 4-0 on May 29, 2015. Ellis was one of just four defenders in 2015 to record a goal and an assist in one game. • Midfielder Roger Espinoza has scored one goal against FC Dallas, coming in a 3-1 defeat at Toyota Stadium on March 14, 2015. • Goalkeeper Tim Melia is 2-2-2 all-time against FC Dallas, posting a 0.83 goals against average and three shutouts. U.S. Open Cup • Forward Dom Dwyer has four goals against FC Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup, all coming in the 6-2 victory at Children’s Mercy Park on July 1, 2015. • Midfielder Benny Feilhaber has three assists against Dallas in the Open Cup, with all three coming in that same 6-2 home win on July 1, 2015. • Defender Saad Abdul-Salaam recorded an assist in that game on July 1, 2015.
#SKCvFCD: PLAYER/COACH CONNECTIONS • Midfielder Roger Espinoza was a teammate of FC Dallas’ Maynor Figueroa at Wigan Athletic during the latter’s loan spell in 2014, while the two have played together consistently for the Honduras National Team since 2009. • Defender Graham Zusi and FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz played together at the University of Maryland in 2005 and 2006. • Sporting KC Homegrown defender Erik Palmer-Brown and FC Dallas Homegrown midfielder Coy Craft were teammates during the U.S. Under-20 National Team’s recent run to CONCACAF U-20 Championship glory. • Defender Tyler Pasher was playing for the USL’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds in 2015 when FC Dallas Homegrown goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez went on loan for one game. • FC Dallas’ third round (59th overall) pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, Dakota Barnathan, signed with Sporting KC’s USL affiliate, the Swope Park Rangers, in February after spending preseason with Dallas. • Sporting KC goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty was an assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2014 to FC Dallas defender Aaron Guillen.

HOMESTAND TO CONCLUDE ON TUESDAY
PATH TO THE QUARTERFINAL
Sporting Kansas City’s club-record home unbeaten streak reached 19 last Thursday with a 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union. Sporting KC took the lead through Diego Rubio’s blistering finish in the 49th but were forced to settle for a point after Roland Alberg slotted home a penalty 20 minutes later. The Union largely relied on the heroics of goalkeeper John McCarthy to keep Sporting KC at bay, with the home side outpacing the visitors 19-8 in shots and 7-2 in shots on target.
Sporting Kansas City has advanced to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals with relative ease, despite facing two MLS opponents in the Round of 32 and Round of 16. Peter Vermes’ men kicked off their involvement in the tournament with a 4-0 hammering of Minnesota United FC at Children’s Mercy Park on June 14, with Ike Opara, Gerso, Dom Dwyer and Daniel Salloi all finding the back of the net in the rout. That victory set up a Round of 16 date with the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium on June 28. The Dynamo had knocked Sporting KC out of the competition at that exact stage and exact location in 2016, but this time it was Sporting KC that emerged victorious as second-half goals from Opara and Gerso saw the side head back to Kansas City with a 2-0 victory.
Sporting KC is unbeaten across 11 games in both MLS and Open Cup contests at Children’s Mercy Park in 2017, going 7-0-4. The side is 13-0-6 in MLS action since a 1-0 defeat to D.C. United on May 27, 2016. It’s the longest active home unbeaten streak in MLS as Sporting KC are one of just four remaining teams to boast an unbeaten home record in the 2017 regular season, alongside the Houston Dynamo, Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire.
FC Dallas has had a slightly kinder U.S. Open Cup schedule to handle, facing the USL’s Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the Round of 32 before taking on MLS side the Colorado Rapids in the Round of 16 - with both contests coming in the friendly confines of Toyota Stadium.
Despite nearing 20 games unbeaten at home in MLS play, Sporting KC has now dropped points in each of their last three MLS contests at Children’s Mercy Park. First, the side conceded late against the Montreal Impact on June 10 to tie 1-1 before coming back from a one-goal deficit against Portland on July 1. The frustration was compounded by only taking a point from a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia in a game that Peter Vermes’ men dominated on July 6.
Dallas scraped through their Open Cup opener with a 2-1 victory as Tulsa suffered heartbreak when Modou Jadama conceded an own goal in the 92nd minute to give Dallas a 2-1 victory after the two sides had traded goals from FCD’s Coy Craft and Tulsa’s Kosuke Kimura on June 14.
In between those three games was a U.S. Open Cup Fourth Round showdown with Minnesota United FC, which Sporting KC claimed 4-0 behind goals from Ike Opara, Gerso, Dom Dwyer and Daniel Salloi. Tuesday’s game will wrap up a three-game homestand for the club heading into the CONCACAF Gold Cup break, and will next be in action on July 22 against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.
Dallas was then drawn against the Rapids and battled to a 3-1 win on June 27. Mauro Diaz netted from the penalty spot just before halftime before Michael Azira equalized seconds after the break. FC Dallas re-took the lead through Ryan Hollingshead in the 57th minute before Javier Morales made sure of the victory in the 89th minute after Colorado’s Kortne Ford had been ejected moments earlier.
DOMINANT VS. DALLAS
TRIO REPRESENT U.S. NATIONAL TEAM
Sporting Kansas City has history on its side against FC Dallas, leading series against the Texas club in the regular season, the postseason and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Sporting KC has a slender 23-22-12 edge in the regular season, a 1-0-0 mark in the MLS Cup Playoffs and are 2-0-0 in the U.S. Open Cup.
Sporting Kansas City continues to be without the services of defenders Matt Besler and Graham Zusi along with forward Dom Dwyer after all three were called in to the U.S. Men’s National Team roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. Besler and Zusi have been staples of the U.S. National Team in recent years, while Dwyer received his first call-up after gaining his citizenship in March.
FC Dallas have narrowed the margin in the regular-season series over the last year, with Sporting KC going 1-2-2 over the last five matches, including a 0-1-1 mark in 2017 where the side labored to a point in a 0-0 draw at Children’s Mercy Park on March 11 before falling 1-0 to a late goal from Maynor Figueroa at Toyota Stadium on April 22.
The trio all started and played the full 90 minutes in the USMNT’s first matchup in the Gold Cup - a 1-1 draw against Panama on Saturday, July 8 - with Dwyer opening the scoring early in the second half with a clinical finish off Kelyn Rowe’s cross for his second goal in as many international appearances for the U.S.
Sporting KC has won the only two matches in the U.S. Open Cup, first taking a 4-0 victory at the Quarterfinal stage at Blue Valley District Activity Center on Aug. 4, 2004 behind goals from Chris Klein, Davy Arnaud, Justin Detter and Alex Zotinca on their way to lifting the trophy that season.
Dwyer marked his international debut with a goal just 19 minutes into a friendly against Ghana on July 1, as he volleyed home an emphatic finish to give the U.S. the lead after great play from Jorge Villafana. Dwyer became the 48th U.S. player to score on his debut and the first to score in the first 20 minutes of his international career since Eddie Robinson in 2008.
The two sides met again in Sporting KC’s successful run to the U.S. Open Cup title in 2015 - this time in the Round of 16 - with Dom Dwyer bagging four goals to go along with a pair of strikes from Krisztian Nemeth on their way to a resounding 6-2 victory on July 1, 2015. Both seasons that Sporting KC has faced Dallas in the U.S. Open Cup, the club has gone on to win the trophy.
Besler, Zusi and Dwyer will now focus on claiming top spot in Group B, with a match on Wednesday, July 12 against Martinique before finishing up group play against Nicaragua on Saturday, July 15. The trio are joined on the roster by FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges and midfielder Kellyn Acosta, while Dallas are also without Maynor Figueroa who is with the Honduras National Team.
RUBIO NETS ON RETURN TO THE LINEUP
Chilean striker Diego Rubio made a successful return to the Sporting KC Starting XI by netting his first goal of the season in the 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union on Thursday, July 6. In the 49th minute, Rubio received a pass from Daniel Salloi, cut inside of his man before rifling a thunderous effort into the top corner to give his side the lead on the night.
VERMES VERBATIM
Thoughts on the 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union… “We should have had three tonight. This is a game where we should’ve had three points. We were the better team. Whatever statistics say, it doesn’t really matter. You can just watch the game and know that. We had a five-minute lapse in the second half where after we scored, we kind of took our foot off the gas. I can’t tell you if it was because of the penalty or not, I couldn’t really even see it, there were too many people in front of us. I’ll see it later. Regardless of that, we did not step it up in that moment when we needed to. There’s minutes after you score when you have to be on top of everything -- your concentration has to be very high in that moment. And it wasn’t. And we let them back in the game. A lot of times, the chances aren’t very good. We had three or four really good chances, and they have got to be goals. We could’ve scored three goals easily tonight. And we should’ve. Whether it’s young guys out there or not - to me it doesn’t matter tonight we should have got three points. It’s not a night that we should have gotten one. And I’m disappointed in that regard.”
Rubio now has two goals in just four starts for Sporting KC in the regular season, tacking on Thursday’s strike to his first goal for the club in a 1-1 road draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on April 27, 2016. Rubio’s goal against the Union was his first since returning from a torn ACL that kept him out for the first half of the season. He sustained the injury in training in October 2016, and made his return to the field in the 0-0 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on June 17 at Avaya Stadium. Rubio became the 11th Sporting KC player to score a goal in MLS play in 2017, meaning the club is now tied for second in the league in the amount of different goalscorers - only Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s 12 different goalscorers top Sporting KC. With Salloi’s assist, Sporting KC has 16 players with at least a goal or an assist to their name this year, which is also tied for second in MLS behind Toronto FC’s 18.
On the depth of his roster… “Depth is one thing, but when those guys (Rubio, Blessing and Salloi) put in performances like that, they make a serious claim to be starters. And that’s what you want on your team. They played very well. I’ll say it again, the movement they had off the ball was excellent. It caused a lot of problems for Philly. The only thing that was lacking was some finishing opportunities. We put some of those goals away, the game is totally different.”
Rubio has scored at every level of the organization, netting two goals in MLS play, once in the U.S. Open Cup and once in the CONCACAF Champions League. He has also scored twice for the side’s USL affiliate - the Swope Park Rangers - including the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Tulsa Roughnecks FC just 10 days prior to scoring for Sporting KC on June 27.

Sporting KC Game Notes | July 11, 2017 vs. FC Dallas | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager | Peter Vermes
Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.
Peter Vermes is in his ninth season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2017. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 138 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won three major trophies – the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regular-season standings in 2011 and 2012. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to six straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 111 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank eighth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions. He has coached 316 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.
He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, the Swope Park Rangers (USL) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored a sensational goal against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueras of the Spanish Second Division.
Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.
After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.
Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful seasons of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year
In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
