#RSLvSKC: BY THE NUMBERS

Sporting Kansas City (5-11-5, 20 pts.) rounds out a three-game road swing this weekend when the team travels to take on Real Salt Lake (8-6-6, 30 pts.) at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah on Sunday night. Sporting is coming off a solid pair of road games - having beaten CF Montreal 2-1 in Canada last Saturday and earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Minnesota United on Wednesday. Following Sunday’s match, Sporting will host eight of their next 11 MLS matches at Children’s Mercy Park. RSL has enjoyed an impressive campaign and are still unbeaten at Rio Tinto Stadium (6-0-3), though the team is winless in their last four games (0-2-2). In the earlier fixture in 2022, Sporting earned a 1-0 victory over the Utes at Children’s Mercy Park on March 26, 2022 following Johnny Russell’s well-taken late winner. Sporting and Real Salt Lake met twice during the regular season in 2021, with Sporting dropping both matches. The first meeting took place on May 1, 2021 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Despite taking an early lead through Alan Pulido, Sporting fell to a 3-1 defeat after RSL equalized before halftime and scored a pair of goals in the second half. Sporting hosted RSL at Children’s Mercy Park on Decision Day on Nov. 7, 2021 and fell to a controversial 1-0 defeat. Just minutes after the refereeing crew missed a handball in the area by RSL’s Justen Glad, top goalscorer Damir Kreilach fired his side into the postseason with a game-winner in the 95th minute. To add salt to the wound, Real Salt Lake also eliminated Sporting from the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2021 in the Western Conference Semifinals. Meeting at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting took the lead through Johnny Russell’s first-half penalty kick but RSL rallied in the second half and equalized through Anderson Julio before Bobby Wood scored the winner in second-half stoppage time to send RSL through to the Western Conference Final. Sporting has won just four of their last 19 regular-season games against RSL and are 12-15-8 in the all-time regular-season series and 15-17-10 in all competitions.

Sporting KC Team Notes • Sporting are 2-1-1 in their last four regular season away matches after starting the year 0-6-2 on the road. • Sporting are 3-2-1 in their last six matches across all competitions. • Sporting have scored eight goals in their last six road matches after scoring just three in their first six away matches of 2022. • In a 1-1 draw at Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, Sporting started five Homegrown Players in an MLS match (John Pulskamp, Kayden Pierre, Felipe Hernandez, Cam Duke and Daniel Salloi) for the first time in club history. • Sporting rank third in MLS with 25.9 team presses per game. • After visiting Real Salt Lake on Sunday, Sporting will host eight of their next 11 MLS fixtures at Children’s Mercy Park between July 23 and Oct. 2. • Sporting are 1-9-1 when falling behind this season, with a win at Montreal on July 9 and a draw at Minnesota on July 13 in their last two matches. • Sporting are one of three clubs yet to score in the first 15 minutes of a regular season match this season (Colorado, Miami). • All five of Sporting’s regular season wins have come by a single goal.

Sporting KC Game Notes | July 17, 2022 at Real Salt Lake | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes ROAD SWING CONCLUDES IN SALT LAKE

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

RUSSELL SCORES VITAL EQUALIZER

Sporting Kansas City concludes their three-game road swing in MLS regular-season play this Sunday when the team travels West to take on Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Sporting are coming off a pair of solid results on the road, claiming a 2-1 victory in Montreal on Saturday and a 1-1 draw with Minnesota on Wednesday. Upon their return to Kansas City following Sunday’s match, Sporting will face off against high-flying LAFC at Children’s Mercy Park on July 23 before the team’s pivotal U.S. Open Cup Semifinal against Sacramento Republic FC at Heart Health Park on July 27.

In a rarity, Sporting Kansas City captain Johnny Russell did not start Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field. Instead, the talisman came off the bench in the 57th minute and had an instant impact, firing home the equalizing goal just six minutes later. Russell scored his sixth MLS goal of the season in the match and his eighth in all competitions - both of which leads the club - when he received a pass from 19-year-old Homegrown right back Kayden Pierre, juked beyond Bakaye Dibassy and slotted into the bottom corner to salvage a precious road point for Sporting KC.

While Sporting has lost three regular-season home games in succession for the first time since 2014, the team’s road form has actually improved after a 0-5-0 start across their first five road games. Since falling 3-1 to LAFC at Banc of California Stadium on April 17, Sporting has gone 2-2-3 in their six road games since - including their first away wins of the season against Nashville SC at GEODIS Park on June 19 and CF Montreal at Stade Saputo on July 9.

Russell, who now has three goals and eight assists in 11 regular season appearances against Minnesota, ranks third in club history with 46 regular season goals since arriving to Kansas City in 2018. Over the past five seasons, Russell’s 77 combined goals (46) and assists (31) in the regular season are third most in MLS behind Carlos Vela and Josef Martinez.

Peter Vermes trotted out a youthful lineup on Wednesday night, with the team’s average age of 25.1 making it the youngest starting XI since 2015 and the third youngest for an MLS match in club history. Five Homegrowns played from the start - another first in club history - as John Pulskamp, Kayden Pierre, Cam Duke, Felipe Hernandez and Daniel Salloi all helped the team claim a point on the road.

ISIMAT-MIRIN NAMED TO TEAM OF THE WEEK

Sporting Kansas City centerback Nicolas Isimat-Mirin was recognized for his excellent showing in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field with a spot on the MLS Team of the Week.

Sporting are hoping newly signed duo William Agada and Erik Thommy are available to play in the near future, as the two approach the conclusion of their immigration process. In addition, Sporting defender Kortne Ford was suspended for 10 MLS matches on Friday for violating the MLS Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) Policy. Ford tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. The 10-game suspension is effective as of July 13, 2022 and Ford will be eligible to return on Sept. 13 vs. DC.

Isimat-Mirin led all Sporting KC players on Wednesday with an MLS career-high 10 duels won to stifle a red hot Minnesota attack that had scored three goals in three straight games. The Frenchman became the first Western Conference player in more than a year to record three interceptions, five clearances and 10 duels won in a regular season road match. Often hampered by injury, Isimat-Mirin has made 33 appearances in all competitions for the club, tallying one goal and one assist, since joining from Besiktas in Turkey ahead of the 2021 campaign.

RSL RIVALRY RENEWED

Sporting Kansas City closes out a three-game road swing this weekend when the team heads to take on rivals Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah on Sunday night. Sporting has enjoyed a fiery rivalry with RSL over the last decade, with the two teams facing off in a number of high-stakes matches and many more heated battles.

FIVE HOMEGROWNS SHINE vs. MINNESOTA

For the first time in club history, Sporting Kansas City started with five Homegrown players in the lineup during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field. Goalkeeper John Pulskamp, defender Kayden Pierre, midfielders Cam Duke and Felipe Hernandez and forward Daniel Salloi all started and helped guide the team to a precious point on the road.

Sporting were eliminated from the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs by Salt Lake, falling 2-1 at Children’s Mercy Park in the Western Conference Semifinals. That match marked the third straight win for RSL over Sporting, having won home and away in the regular season - including a highly-controversial 1-0 victory on Decision Day at Children’s Mercy Park where PRO Referees issued an apology for denying Sporting a late penalty. Sporting exacted some revenge back on March 26, 2022, earning a tight 1-0 victory over Real Salt Lake. With the game seemingly headed for a scoreless draw, Johnny Russell popped up to stroke home a composed finish in the 81st minute to seal all three points.

Pulskamp and Pierre each stood out from the pack, as Pulskamp produced four excellent stops on the night - including one from point-blank range that would’ve otherwise resulted in an own goal. Pierre, 19, recorded his first MLS assist on Johnny Russell’s equalizer, picking out the Scotsman with a clever ball between a number of Loons defenders to become the second youngest player in club history to tally an assist.

The last time Sporting visited Rio Tinto Stadium was over a year ago on May 1, 2021. Sporting took the lead that day through Alan Pulido but an equalizer from Damir Kreilach and a brace from Rubio Rubin saw RSL run out 3-1 winners.

Wednesday also marked the first time in club history that Sporting started with a Homegrown player on each line of the field (goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward).

Sporting trails RSL in the all-time regular-season series 12-15-8, including a 4-10-3 mark on the road in Utah. In all competitions, Sporting has gone 15-17-10 in the series against Salt Lake.

#MINvSKC QUOTES

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes... Thoughts on the match: “A tremendous performance by the guys. I don’t know what else I could say, just a tremendous performance on both sides of the ball. We were very organized and excellent on the ball. We created probably four high-quality goal-scoring chances in the first half. We were very dynamic in the final third and I think that we were tactically very good. Defensively, we were excellent. The goal that we receive is a tough one to swallow because we were playing very well up until that point. But again, credit to the guys for not losing themselves. An excellent, excellent game for the guys & a great point for us.”

U.S. OPEN CUP SEMIS BECKON IN LATE JULY

As the month of July unfolds, Sporting Kansas City will have one eye on a highlyanticipated Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinal against Sacramento Republic FC at Heart Health Park on July 27. Sporting has three MLS games until that clash, and is currenlty in the midst of a three-game road swing at Montreal (July 9), Minnesota (July 13) and Real Salt Lake (July 17) before a home match against LAFC on July 23. Sporting has advanced to the Open Cup Semifinals after defeating MLS sides FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo FC in the Round of 32 and Round of 16, respectively, before cruising past USL League One side Union Omaha in the Quarterfinals.

On the play of John Pulskamp: “He was tremendous the whole game. There was one with kind of a little combination play on the top of our box and the player got in on a breakaway on him. They called it back, but he made the save before they even called him offside. He comes out in a great way. He played really well tonight. In the second half, he was a monster. He never lost himself emotionally in the game, which was tremendous. And I don’t mean because of the goal that occurred. There was nothing he could do about that. I’m not talking about that one. I’m talking about emotionally in the game, because now they’re coming at us a little bit there at the end with the corner kick and everything else. He maintained his focus and made great saves. He was very good. It’s exactly what you’re hoping from your goalkeeper, right? If you’re 0-0 and he makes that one save to keep you in the game and then you score, unbelievable. If you’re up 2-1 and he holds the team off. But in this situation, it was late in the game 1-1 and he was pulling saves out of everywhere. He was just really good. He was also great with the ball at his feet today. His decision making was really, really good.”

Sporting are looking to advance to their fifth U.S. Open Cup Final, having won all four of their previous trips to the championship game - lifting the trophy in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017. Should Sporting claim the 2022 crown, it would put the club into a tie for the most Open Cup titles with five, alongside Maccabee Los Angeles (titles in 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1981) and Bethlehem Steel (titles in 1915, 1916, 1918, 1919 and 1926). The Open Cup has been a welcome distraction for a Sporting side labouring in MLS regular-season play - currently holding up the bottom of the Western Conference with a 4-11-4 record and just 16 goals scored in 19 games. In the Open Cup, Sporting has won three straight and scored 12 goals along the way, including six in the Quarterfinal victory over Omaha - with the 6-0 result matching the club’s largest margin of victory across all competitions in team history.

Sporting KC Game Notes | July 17, 2022 at Real Salt Lake | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 216 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 177 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 502 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the sixth longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

Sporting Kansas City signed center back Andreu Fontas, a 10-year professional with more than 200 appearances in his native Spain, on Aug. 8, 2018. Fontas underwent Achilles surgery in late 2019, keeping him out for the majority of the 2020 season before making his return with three starts late in the campaign. Fontas spent five seasons from 2013-2018 with Celta Vigo in Spain’s top-flight La Liga, where he started 100 of 105 league appearances and helped the club to the semifinals of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The defender developed in FC Barcelona’s famed La

Masia youth academy alongside current Sporting KC midfielder Uri Rosell, playing nearly 100 matches combined for FC Barcelona B and FC Barcelona from 2008-2012. Fontas advanced through from the B team to the first team in 2009 and played in 16 games for the Spanish giants, including a sub appearance in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup Final that Barca won 4-0 over Santos. Fontas spent the 2012-13 season on loan at Mallorca before signing with Celta Vigo in June 2013, where he made 139 appearances over five years. Internationally, Fontas has represented Spain at the Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels and has also played for the Catalonia National Team.

He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts.

Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.

Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.

Sporting Kansas City announced in January 2020 that the club had acquired central midfielder Gadi Kinda on a one-year loan from Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. Sporting made the loan move permanent ahead of the 2021 season. He developed as a youth in his hometown club’s academy prior to landing an top-flight debut in September 2011 as a 17-year-old.

Ashdod spent the 2015-16 season in Israel’s second division, but a strong bounce-back culminated with a Liga Leumit title as Kinda earned 27 appearances and helped his team finish atop the standings. Ashdod’s promotion saw Kinda tally seven goals and seven assists over the next two and a half seasons before his transfer to Beitar Jerusalem. Kinda has five caps for the senior Israeli National Team, making his debut on June 5, 2021 when he scored the final goal in a 3-1 friendly win over Montenegro. Central midfielder Remi Walter signed with Sporting KC in December 2020, having amassed nearly 200 professional appearances since 2012, spanning seven full seasons in his native France and one season in Turkey. He boasts experience in several prestigious European competitions, including the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Champions League qualifying, French Ligue 1 and the Turkish Super Lig. A native of Essey-les-Nancy, Walter developed in Nancy’s youth academy before joining the first team as an 18-year-old in 2013. He became a regular starter in the early stages of the 2013-14 season and spent the next two and a half years as an integral midfield contributor for the side before being transferred to French title contender Nice in early

2016. Walter helped the club to a fourth-place finish as well as qualification to the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The following season, he made 26 appearances as Nice took another step forward by placing third in Ligue 1 and booking a spot in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League. Walter split the 2017-18 campaign between Nice and Troyes on loan, before returning to Nice in the summer of 2018. Walter transferred to Turkish first division outfit Yeni Malatyaspor in January of 2020 before departing later that summer. On the international stage, Walter was a French youth international who participated in a number of high-profile tournaments, namely the 2012 UEFA U-17 Championship in Slovenia and qualifying for the 2017 UEFA U-21 Championship in Poland.
