SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

FINDING SOLACE IN THE OPEN CUP

After five weeks of waiting, Sporting Kansas City is finally set to take on Sacramento Republic FC at Heart Health Park in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals this Wednesday night with a place in the Open Cup final on the line - with Orlando City SC and the New York Red Bulls battling it out on the other side of the bracket

Sporting Kansas City is preparing to take on USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC at Heart Health Park on Wednesday night with a spot in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final on the line. Should Orlando win the other Semifinal against the New York Red Bulls, the final will be held in Florida. Should Sporting and New York advance, the showpiece event will be hosted at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting is looking for a welcome distraction to the club’s league form, with the team going 1-4-1 over their last six MLS matches, while Saturday night’s loss to Los Angeles FC at Children’s Mercy Park was the team’s fourth consecutive home defeat - the first time in the club’s 27-year history that has happened.

Sporting have reached the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals for the sixth time in club history. In each of the last four instances, they went on to win the competition (2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017). With Wednesday’s match coming on the road, it’ll mark the first time since June 2016 - when SKC beat then-NASL club Minnesota United - that Sporting has traveled to take on a lower-division opponent.

Sporting enjoyed a boost during Saturday’s loss with the debuts of newly signed creative midfielder Erik Thommy and lively forward William Agada after the pair completed their immigration process midway through July. On the flipside, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia suffered a hamstring injury in the game and is listed as out for the Open Cup Semifinal in Sacramento.

While Sporting has come back from a goal down to win just once in 23 matches in the MLS regular season, the team has come back from a deficit twice already in the team’s three-match Open Cup run - coming back from 2-0 down to defeat Dallas 4-2 in the Round of 32 and coming back from 1-0 down to beat Houston 2-1 in the Round of 16.

Both Sporting and Sacramento have been dominant in their Open Cup matches to date, as Sporting has outscored their opponents 12-3 across their three matches, while Sacramento has outscored their opposition 14-2 in their five Open Cup showdowns in 2022.

Sporting holds a 15-5-3 record against lower-division opponents in the Open Cup throughout the club’s history, but Sacramento will be full of confidence having already knocked off MLS sides the San Jose Earthquakes and the LA Galaxy en-route to the semifinal stage.

Sporting is just two wins away from lifting their fifth U.S. Open Cup - tying Maccabee Los Angeles and Bethlhem Steel for the most titles in the historic tournament’s 107-year history.

AGADA & THOMMY DEBUT vs. LAFC

Sporting Kansas City saw newly acquired striker Willy Agada and midfielder Erik Thommy make their debuts for the club during Saturday night’s 2-0 loss to Los Angeles FC at Children’s Mercy Park.

FACING LOWER DIVISION DOE

Sporting Kansas City is set for the team’s biggest match of the season to date this Wednesday night when Peter Vermes’ side heads to central California to take on USL Championship outfit Sacramento Republic FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals at Heart Health Park.

German creator Thommy started in the midfield and produced a sparkling first impression as he lasted 61 minutes and led the team with three shots on goal, including one on target, and also led the team with eight total crosses. He also engaged in seven duels and won possession on three occasions, including once in the final third.

The match marks the second consecutive Open Cup clash with a lower-division opponent, as Sporting defeated USL League One side Union Omaha by a 6-0 scoreline in the Quarterfinals on June 22. Sacramento has rattled off five Open Cup wins to reach the Semifinals, including victories over MLS clubs San Jose Earthquakes on May 25 and the LA Galaxy on June 21.

Agada had to wait to make his debut, coming on in the 84th minute with Sporting down two goals. The lively attacker went right into the fray, glancing a neat header on-frame late on that was gathered by Maxime Crepeau in the LAFC goal. He also won his only duel of the match and suffered one foul during his short stint on the field.

Sacramento will provide a stern challenge for Sporting on Wednesday, as the 2014 USL Championship winners have won all three Open Cup home matches against MLS sides in the club’s history (W 4-1 vs. RSL in 2017, W 2-1 vs. Seattle in 2018, W 2-0 vs. San Jose in 2022). Sacramento’s only Open Cup home loss in club history came against Kitsap Pumas of the USL Premier Development League on June 1, 2016.

SPORTING DEALS WITH EXTREME HEAT IN LOSS TO LAFC

It was a sweltering night at Children’s Mercy Park this past Saturday as Sporting Kansas City fell to a 2-0 loss to Los Angeles FC. It marked the sixth Sporting match at Children’s Mercy Park on a day in which the high temperature at MCI Airport was 100 degrees or higher.

Sporting holds a commanding 15-5-3 record against lower-division opponents in the club’s Open Cup history, while Sacramento are 9-1-3 at home in all competitions this season. However, Sacramento are 0-2-2 in their last four USL Championship matches and have failed to score in three of four games during that stretch. A lower-division team has not defeated an MLS club in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals or finals since 1999 when the Rochester Rhinos defeated Columbus and Colorado in the semifinals and final, respectively, to win the tournament championship.

#SKCvLAFC QUOTES

As Sporting Kansas City prepares to face off against USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC at Heart Health Park in the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals on Wednesday night, here’s a look back at how Sporting advanced to the semifinal stage.

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes... On the two goals conceded: “On the first goal, they had a free kick in their half. Ball gets played to (Jesus) Murillo. We should have went and pressured him right away. We didn’t and gave him too much time. He plays it to the next guy who gets it. It’s too much time. We should have stepped there as well. We don’t. They play between the lines. We don’t cut out that pass. The guy turns, plays the first ball through. And then defensively, we don’t get to the guy and he hits a cracker just like they hit their second goal against us at their place the last time where the guy hit the full volley goal. On the second goal, a terrible loss of possession on our part. How we lose the ball, I don’t know. In those moments, too many guys were on the field that played young tonight. And I think that’s the difference in the game. We actually played really well for so many parts of the game and so much of the game. But at the end, when you are naive and you give away the second goal the way we do, which is absolutely ridiculous, you should be embarrassed of that. I am and I am the coach. I’m not even on the field. It’s just a bad way when you’re trying to get back into the game. It’s 1-0. You’re right on the edge and you give up that goal. It’s a backbreaker. But I go back to the first goal as well - just very poor in the way that we respond and react as soon as that free kick is taken. Our transition in that situation was terrible and our organization and our intent and our ability to recognize it. I say this all the time, and I don’t use it lightly, when I talk about every roll of the ball, I mean every roll of the ball. You have to be locked in. The second you’re not, the other team capitalizes. And they did. The second one we gifted wrapped it for them.”

May 10, 2022 - Round of 32 - Sporting KC 4-2 FC Dallas (AET) Sporting KC opened the 2022 tournament with a home match against MLS side FC Dallas at Children’s Mercy Park. Sporting fell into a 2-0 hole after goals from Franco Jara and Eddie Munjoma but roared back in the second half, pulling a goal back through Nikola Vujnovic before Marinos Tzionis headed home a 98th-minute equalizer to send the game to extra time. From there, Khiry Shelton forced an own goal before adding one of his own to seal the win. May 25, 2022 - Round of 16 - Sporting KC 2-1 Houston Dynamo FC Once again, Sporting KC fell behind in their Round of 16 clash with Houston at Children’s Mercy Park as Corey Baird fired the visitors in front late in the first half. Johnny Russell equalized shortly after halftime with a brilliant run and strike before converting the game-winner from the penalty spot after Daniel Salloi had been fouled. June 22, 2022 - Quarterfinal - Sporting KC 6-0 Union Omaha Having beaten two MLS teams earlier in the tournement, USL League One side Union Omaha arrived at Children’s Mercy Park full of confidence. However, Sporting’s quality shone through on the night as the team took a 2-0 lead into halftime after goals from Daniel Salloi and Kortne Ford, before Salloi added a third shortly after the break. Khiry Shelton fired home a fourth before Felipe Hernandez bagged a brace on a special night.

Sporting KC Game Notes | July 23, 2022 vs. Los Angeles FC | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 216 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 177 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 504 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the sixth longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

Sporting Kansas City signed center back Andreu Fontas, a 10-year professional with more than 200 appearances in his native Spain, on Aug. 8, 2018. Fontas underwent Achilles surgery in late 2019, keeping him out for the majority of the 2020 season before making his return with three starts late in the campaign. Fontas spent five seasons from 2013-2018 with Celta Vigo in Spain’s top-flight La Liga, where he started 100 of 105 league appearances and helped the club to the semifinals of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The defender developed in FC Barcelona’s famed La

Masia youth academy alongside current Sporting KC midfielder Uri Rosell, playing nearly 100 matches combined for FC Barcelona B and FC Barcelona from 2008-2012. Fontas advanced through from the B team to the first team in 2009 and played in 16 games for the Spanish giants, including a sub appearance in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup Final that Barca won 4-0 over Santos. Fontas spent the 2012-13 season on loan at Mallorca before signing with Celta Vigo in June 2013, where he made 139 appearances over five years. Internationally, Fontas has represented Spain at the Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels and has also played for the Catalonia National Team.

Sporting Kansas City signed French center back Nicolas Isimat-Mirin ahead of the 2021 MLS season. Isimat has played over 250 professional matches since 2010, featuring in the top divisions of France, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has logged 93 appearances each in France’s Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won three league titles as an integral member of PSV Eindhoven.

In 2014, Isimat was loaned from Monaco to PSV Eindhoven. In his first Eredivisie season, he helped PSV win the league title by a 17-point margin, leading to PSV acquiring the defender on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts.

Born in the Paris suburb of Meudon, Isimat competed in the famous Clairefontaine youth academy from 2004-2007 before continuing his development at Rennes and Valenciennes. He began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 and spent the next three seasons as a regular starter for Valenciennes. Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.

Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.

Sporting Kansas City announced in January 2020 that the club had acquired central midfielder Gadi Kinda on a one-year loan from Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. Sporting made the loan move permanent ahead of the 2021 season. He is set to miss the entire 2022 season after undergoing knee surgery.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Israel, Kinda joined Beitar Jerusalem in February 2019 and started 30 of 31 appearances in all competitions. Ashdod spent the 2015-16 season in Israel’s second division, but a strong bounce-back culminated with a Liga Leumit title as Kinda earned 27 appearances and helped his team finish atop the standings. Ashdod’s promotion saw Kinda tally seven goals and seven assists over the next two and a half seasons before his transfer to Beitar Jerusalem. Kinda has five caps for the senior Israeli National Team, making his debut on June 5, 2021 when he scored the final goal in a 3-1 friendly win over Montenegro.
