#SKCvNY: BY THE NUMBERS

Sporting Kansas City (4-10-4, 16 pts.) returns home this weekend to take on the New York Red Bulls (8-5-5, 29 pts.) at Children’s Mercy Park with the team looking to return to winning ways following last Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field. Sporting last faced off against the Red Bulls during the team’s 2021 season opener, earning an impressive 2-1 victory at Red Bull Arena on April 17, 2021. Caden Clark gave the hosts the lead with a brilliant volley early in the second half before Gadi Kinda equalized for Sporting from the penalty spot. Two minutes later, Khiry Shelton’s cross reached Daniel Salloi at the far post who converted his first goal since late in the 2019 campaign and set him on his way to a MVP-finalist campaign as Sporting earned all three points. Sporting last hosted the Red Bulls at Children’s Mercy Park on April 14, 2019 in the early days of a disappointing season for Sporting KC which saw the team miss the playoffs for the first time since 2010. The game began well for Sporting with Johnny Russell slotting home the opener, however the Red Bulls fought back after the break and took the lead with goals from Daniel Royer and Brian White. Youngster Gianluca Busio rescued a point for SKC late in the game with his third goal in as many games. That clash was puncuated with a more sinister moment, as Red Bulls midfielder Kaku was shown a straight red card for kicking a dead ball into the Children’s Mercy Park crowd, injuring a fan. Sporting KC is unbeaten in their last four home matches against the Red Bulls in all competitions, going 1-0-2 in league play and also topping New York by a 2-1 scoreline in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final at Children’s Mercy Park.

Sporting KC Team Notes • Sporting have won two of their last three matches in all competitions, scoring eight goals during that stretch. • Sporting rank last in MLS in goal differential (-16) and second-to-last in goals per match (0.89). • Sporting’s eight home goals are the second fewest in MLS, ahead of Chicago’s seven. • Sporting rank last in MLS with 0.09 expected goals per shot attempt. Their opponents average 0.13 expected goals per shot attempt. • Sporting are 0-3-2 against the East this season. Their last win over an Eastern Conference side came against Chicago Fire FC on Sept. 11, 2021. • With a 4-10-4 record, Sporting are one of two teams with double-digit losses this season (Charlotte FC) and have already matched their loss total from 2021. • Sporting have lost two straight regular season home matches and are looking to avoid their first three-game home losing streak in MLS play since Sept. 2014. • Nine of Sporting’s next 15 MLS matches are at home, including eight home matches in an 11-game stretch from July 23 to Oct. 2.

Date

Sporting KC Player Notes • Forward Daniel Salloi struck twice in SKC’s 6-0 win over Omaha on June 22, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Open Cup with seven goals. • Forward Daniel Salloi is second on the team with six goals in all competitions, one behind captain Johnny Russell’s seven. • Since the start of 2019, Johnny Russell’s five direct free kick goals are the second most in MLS regular season play behind Lucas Zelarayan (seven). • Forward Johnny Russell ranks fourth in MLS in touches inside the opponent’s box (83) as well as ninth in duels won (112). His 76 combined goals (45) and assists (31) in the regular season are third most in MLS since the start of 2018. • Midfielder Felipe Hernandez, who has three goals and one assist in his last three appearances including Open Cup, leads Sporting with four assists in all competitions. • Midfielder Remi Walter leads MLS in distance covered (121.3 miles) and ranks third among field players in recoveries (146). SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES

SPORTING ADDS WILLIAM AGADA & ERIK THOMMY

Sporting Kansas City is back in action this weekend when the team returns home to host the New York Red Bulls at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday night. Following last weekend’s 3-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC, Sporting now finds themselves seven points out of the seventh and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, and just one point clear of the San Jose Earthquakes in the basement.

On June 23, Sporting Kansas City announced a pair of signings as forward William Agada and midfielder Erik Thommy were each added to the roster. Both players will be cleared to play for Sporting upon the receipt of their P1 Visas and once Major League Soccer’s Secondary Transfer Window opens on July 7. Sporting acquired 22-year-old striker William Agada in a transfer from Israeli side Hapoel Jerusalem. The striker has scored 37 goals across four seasons in Israel, three with Hapoel Jerusalem and one on loan at Hapoel Haifa in 2020-2021.

Sporting has enjoyed a solid record at Children’s Mercy Park in 2022, going 6-3-2 in all competitions but just 3-3-2 in MLS play - including losses in their last two home MLS matches against the Vancouver Whitecaps and New England Revolution.

Agada spent the 2021-22 season with Hapoel Jerusalem, which had gained promotion to the Premier League after posting a second-place finish in the Liga Leumit the previous year. He led the team with eight goals, including five since the start of 2022.

Peter Vermes’ side enjoyed a solid week despite the loss to Seattle, having snapped a 10-game road winless streak with a huge 2-1 victory in Nashville on Sunday, June 19 before comfortably dispatching USL League One team Union Omaha by a 6-0 scoreline in the midweek U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal bout.

Thommy joins Sporting as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with German Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart. Thommy has recorded 42 goals and 33 assists across nine seasons in his native Germany - including nine goals, 14 assists and 96 appearances in the Bundesliga, one of the top leagues in the world.

The match against Seattle at Lumen Field was the team’s third game in six days and proved one hurdle too far, as Will Bruin, Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan each scored to give the Sounders all three points during a Saturday noon local kickoff.

Capable of playing in an advanced midfield role or on the wing, Thommy launched his professional career with FC Augsburg in 2014 before going on loan to FC Kaiserslautern (2014-2016) and Jahn Regensburg (2016-2017). The right-footed player joined VfB Stuttgart in 2017, starred for Fortuna Dusseldorf during a successful loan spell in 20192020, and ended his time at Stuttgart this spring by appearing in each of the club’s last six matches of the 2021-2022 campaign.

Sporting will now host the Red Bulls who are the best road team in MLS with a 5-3-1 record, taking 16 of their 26 points away from home. New York began the season with a stunning 5-0-0 run but have cooled off since, going 0-3-1 in their last three road games including last Sunday’s 2-0 loss to LAFC at Banc of California Stadium. Sporting were without 2022 center back revelation Kortne Ford during the trip to Seattle as he suffered a head injury in the victory over Omaha, while forward Nikola Vujnovic remains out with a calf injury. They join season-along Designated Player absentees Gadi Kinda and Alan Pulido on the club’s Player Availability Report heading into Sunday.

KANSAS CITY NAMED FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 HOST CITY

Kansas City was officially named a FIFA World Cup 2026 host city on June 16 as FIFA, the sport’s global governing body, announced the 16 bids selected across the United States, Mexico and Canada to host matches for the largest event in World Cup history.

MATCHING THE HIGH-ENERGY RED BULLS

Sporting Kansas City returns to Children’s Mercy Park this weekend to take on a high-octane New York Red Bulls side this Sunday night, looking to rebound from last weekend’s 3-0 road defeat to Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field.

HOST CITIES (16): Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Guadalajara, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Miami, Monterrey, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver

Sporting last faced the Red Bulls during the last season’s opener, with Peter Vermes’ side earning an impressive 2-1 comeback victory at Red Bull Arena. Caden Clark volleyed home a spectacular opener for New York early in the second half but Gadi Kinda equalized from the penalty spot before Daniel Salloi tucked home Khiry Shelton’s cross two minutes later to seal an excellent three points.

FIFA World Cup 2026 matches will be held at Arrowhead Stadium at the Truman Sports Complex in Jackson County, Missouri. Home to the two-time Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium has hosted the last four AFC Championships and holds the distinction as the loudest stadium in the world. Held every four years, the FIFA World Cup is the most prestigious and most widely viewed single sporting event. In 2018, a combined 3.572 billion viewers watched the World Cup and an estimated 6.8 million tourists visited host cities. The FIFA World Cup 2026, which will feature a record 80 matches, will be the first hosted by three countries and the first with 48 participating nations. Host cities can expect up to $620 million in incremental economic activity as a result of World Cup matches according to a study.

New York last visited Children’s Mercy Park on April 14, 2019, playing out a 2-2 draw. Johnny Russell gave Sporting the lead in the first half before goals from Daniel Royer and Brian White flipped the game on its head in the second half. A 16-year-old Gianluca Busio scored his third goal in as many games to salvage a point for Sporting before Red Bulls midfielder Kaku was shown a red card for a shocking display of petulance, kicking a dead ball into the crowd and injuring a fan.

Manager & Sporting Director Peter Vermes...

While Sporting has enjoyed a solid home record for much of a challenging 2022, the team has lost their last two home MLS matches to Vancouver and New England. New York began the season with a stunning 5-0-0 record on the road but is winless in their last four, going 0-3-1.

On the difference between the first and second halves: “We were in the game. We were actually playing pretty well. They did a really good job against our two wingers. They focused on those two guys and tried to shut them down in the first half. In the second half, we tried to do something different, which started off really well. Cam Duke has somewhat of a breakaway going, which could have changed things a little bit when he got in alone. The two header goals, they’re very good from those little deep-lying areas and getting guys into the box and playing balls in behind you. Both goals were headers that we should have had better positioning. On the other goal, it was more of the fact we were pushing at that point to get back into the game and that goal was a little different. It’s the two in the air that I was more concerned with, but the other one is just a function of us stepping up.”

SPORTING THRASH OMAHA TO MOVE INTO OPEN CUP SEMIS Sporting Kansas City are moving onto the club’s sixth Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals - of which they’ve gone on to win their last four on the way to winning the tournament in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017 - following the team’s decisive 6-0 victory over Union Omaha in the Quarterfinals last Wednesday.

Having already knocked off a pair of MLS opponents in the Chicago Fire and Minnesota United FC earlier in the competition, USL League One side Omaha posed a tricky challenge for Sporting KC, especially with a raucous traveling contingent of approximately 1,000 fans.

On the team having played three matches in six days: “I would say that it was very hot on the field today, very hot. I think it would have been different if we didn’t have a midweek game. But the fact that we had a midweek game, the guys who played in the midweek game that weren’t in today would have had the same problem. It was trying to manage people. Legs wise, it was a little difficult. It wasn’t an easy match from a heat perspective. The turf keeps it all in. The fact that we played to your point, three games in six days no doubt had a cumulative effect from a work ethic. But the guys tried. It’s not like they didn’t try. So, I have no issues there.”

However, that section of the stadium was quickly silenced as Sporting produced a dominant performance to advance to the next round. Daniel Salloi scored the opener within the opening 10 minutes before Kortne Ford headed home his first goal for the club before halftime. After the interval, Salloi added his second before Khiry Shelton made it four. Felipe Hernandez got in on the action and bagged a pair of goals to close out the second half and send Sporting into the semifinals on the back of a 6-0 victory. The scoreline matched Sporting’s largest-ever margin of victory in all competitions, and improved Sporting’s home record in the Open Cup to 24-7-3, while the team is now 15-5-3 against non-MLS teams as the club prepares to take on USL Championship side Sacramento Republic FC at Heart Health Park on July 27.

Sporting KC Game Notes | July 3, 2022 vs. New York Red Bulls | SportingKC.com/Game-Notes Manager & Sporting Director | Peter Vermes

Assistant Coach | Kerry Zavagnin Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions, among others.

Peter Vermes is in his 14th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2022 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 215 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 176 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank fifth most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.

He started his professional career with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to Kansas City in 2000. He played 237 games (228 starts) and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before both were overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in Kansas City blue. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001.

On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 499 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.

On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the United States Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured. He married his wife Mirriam prior to the 2009 season, when he became an assistant coach at the club.

With over 14 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all 18 leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure at Sporting KC ranks as the sixth longest active run.

Assistant Coach | Zoran Savic Assistant Coach Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984.

Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.

After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005.

Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.

In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.

Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.

Goalkeeper Coach | Alec Dufty Goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty is in his sixth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with Sporting KC’s goalkeepers, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a record-breaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final. Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Year

A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL season.

Sporting Kansas City signed center back Andreu Fontas, a 10-year professional with more than 200 appearances in his native Spain, on Aug. 8, 2018. Fontas underwent Achilles surgery in late 2019, keeping him out for the majority of the 2020 season before making his return with three starts late in the campaign. Fontas spent five seasons from 2013-2018 with Celta Vigo in Spain’s top-flight La Liga, where he started 100 of 105 league appearances and helped the club to the semifinals of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The defender developed in FC Barcelona’s famed La

Masia youth academy alongside current Sporting KC midfielder Uri Rosell, playing nearly 100 matches combined for FC Barcelona B and FC Barcelona from 2008-2012. Fontas advanced through from the B team to the first team in 2009 and played in 16 games for the Spanish giants, including a sub appearance in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup Final that Barca won 4-0 over Santos. Fontas spent the 2012-13 season on loan at Mallorca before signing with Celta Vigo in June 2013, where he made 139 appearances over five years. Internationally, Fontas has represented Spain at the Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels and has also played for the Catalonia National Team.

Isimat has played over 250 professional matches since 2010, featuring in the top divisions of France, the Netherlands and Turkey. He has logged 93 appearances each in France’s Ligue 1 and the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won three league titles as an integral member of PSV Eindhoven.

In 2014, Isimat was loaned from Monaco to PSV Eindhoven. In his first Eredivisie season, he helped PSV win the league title by a 17-point margin, leading to PSV acquiring the defender on a permanent transfer ahead of the 2015-16 campaign. He appeared in 26 matches as PSV captured another Eredivisie title. Isimat and PSV won their third title in four years in 2017-2018. In early 2019, Isimat joined Besiktas in Turkey, starting 14 matches during the latter half of the season. For the 2019-20 campaign, the defender was loaned back to Ligue 1 for a stint with Toulouse, making 16 starts.

Born in the Paris suburb of Meudon, Isimat competed in the famous Clairefontaine youth academy from 2004-2007 before continuing his development at Rennes and Valenciennes. He began his professional career as an 18-year-old in 2010 and spent the next three seasons as a regular starter for Valenciennes. Isimat-Mirin landed a transfer to French title contender Monaco, where he played 11 matches for the club in all competitions during the 2013-14 season.

Isimat represented France as a U-20 and U-21 youth international and notably featured during 2013 UEFA European U-21 Championship qualifying. He struck a center back partnership alongside future World Cup winner Raphael Varane as France finished atop their qualifying group.

Sporting Kansas City announced in January 2020 that the club had acquired central midfielder Gadi Kinda on a one-year loan from Israeli Premier League side Beitar Jerusalem. Ashdod spent the 2015-16 season in Israel’s second division, but a strong bounce-back culminated with a Liga Leumit title as Kinda earned 27 appearances and helped his team finish atop the standings. Ashdod’s promotion saw Kinda tally seven goals and seven assists over the next two and a half seasons before his transfer to Beitar Jerusalem. Kinda has five caps for the senior Israeli National Team, making his debut on June 5, 2021 when he scored the final goal in a 3-1 friendly win over Montenegro. Central midfielder Remi Walter signed with Sporting KC in December 2020, having amassed nearly 200 professional appearances since 2012, spanning seven full seasons in his native France and one season in Turkey. He boasts experience in several prestigious European competitions, including the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Champions League qualifying, French Ligue 1 and the Turkish Super Lig. A native of Essey-les-Nancy, Walter developed in Nancy’s youth academy before joining the first team as an 18-year-old in 2013. He became a regular starter in the early stages of the 2013-14 season and spent the next two and a half years as an integral midfield contributor for the side before being transferred to French title contender Nice in early

2016. Walter helped the club to a fourth-place finish as well as qualification to the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The following season, he made 26 appearances as Nice took another step forward by placing third in Ligue 1 and booking a spot in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League. Walter split the 2017-18 campaign between Nice and Troyes on loan, before returning to Nice in the summer of 2018. Walter transferred to Turkish first division outfit Yeni Malatyaspor in January of 2020 before departing later that summer. On the international stage, Walter was a French youth international who participated in a number of high-profile tournaments, namely the 2012 UEFA U-17 Championship in Slovenia and qualifying for the 2017 UEFA U-21 Championship in Poland.
