SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs COLORADO RAPIDS LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. 7:30 p.m. CT (KSMO; Altitude) July 6, 2011 (WEEK 17; MLS Game 161) Sporting Kansas City put their long undefeated streak on the line when they play host to the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday evening at Livestrong Sporting Park. SKC are unbeaten in eight league games – and 10 in all competitions – after a 2-1 win at Portland last weekend. The Rapids have won just once in their last 10 league games after another home draw, this time a scoreless result with Houston on Sunday evening. REFEREE: Niko Bratsis. Colorado has not at Kansas City since 2002. In their 10 league games since, Kansas City has defeated the Rapids seven times (with three draws). However, the Rapids have eliminated Kansas City on their home ground twice in that stretch in the U.S. Open Cup, 2008 and 2010. Kansas City has not won at Colorado since 2004. The Rapids have won four of the seven meetings at home since, the teams playing to 1-1 draws two years in a row now. Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. COL: P4 W1 L0 D3 … Gary Smith v KC: P6 W2 L1 D3 LAST MEETING (MLS): 5/28: COL 1, KC 1 (Casey 13 – Smith 76) The Rapids took the lead in the 13th minute as Conor Casey latched onto a poor back pass from Sporting KC defender Aurelien Collin, rounded goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen and slid the ball toward goal. Sporting defender Matt Besler nearly cleared it off the line but only drove it into the net. But Sporting found the equalizer with a quarter-hour to play. Ryan Smith was freed on the left side of the Rapids penalty area by Teal Bunbury and finished well into the top right corner past goalkeeper Matt Pickens. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 54). SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City stretched their league unbeaten run to eight games, winning for a third consecutive match in a 2-1 win at the Portland Timbers on Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. Sporting have 20 points from 16 matches on the season, moving into a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH Sporting KC took the lead with two goals in a four-minute span. In the 15th minute, Omar Bravo found Sapong with a forward pass and Sapong rounded Mamadou Danso before firing a shot past Troy Perkins from the top of the box.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Then four minutes later, Matt Besler launched in a long throw-in that Sapong flicked on, finding Aurelien Collin near the top of the six-yard box. The big French center back guiding a glancing header just inside the right post for the 2-0 lead. The Timbers pulled a goal in stunning fashion just before halftime. Darlington Nagbe controlled a corner that had been punched out by Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, juggled it twice with his right foot and then sent a looping volley inside the left-hand post. SKC manager Peter Vermes made one change to the team that took a 2-1 victory against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Livestrong Sporting Park. Michael Harrington came in at left back for Seth Sinovic. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-3-2): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Michael Harrington - Julio Cesar - Milos Stojcev (Kei Kamara 72), Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza - C.J. Sapong (Teal Bunbury 93+), Omar Bravo (Birahim Diop 82). TEAM NEWS Just two weeks ago, Sporting Kansas City were at the foot of the Eastern Conference table. With a pair of victories in two home games against Western clubs this week, and the right combination of other results, they could be a point out of first by the end of Week 17. "It was mainly just getting that game in at home, finally getting a good win under our belts and reiterating to ourselves that we're capable of doing a lot of damage. We knew it at the beginning of the season but no one else did,” said rookie CJ Sapong. Sapong was involved in multiple goals for the first time in his career, with a goal and an assist. He has two goals and two assists in his past five games. “C.J. (Sapong) did a good job at turning it, one thing that's very good in his game as a young guy,” said Vermes. “As a forward he plays very well with his back to the goal and his turn was fantastic. He had a lot of composure to slip that ball into the back of the net." The 10-game trip to start the season ended with a pair of draws to lead into the opener of their new stadium; since opening Livestrong Sporting Park, Sporting have won two of their three road contests with a draw. “We’ve had some good results on the road this year,” Vermes said, “but I think this takes the cake so far. The crowd was amazing. It was a very difficult environment for us to play in.” The game against Colorado kicks off the payback for the 10-game road trip to start the season. Ten of Sporting next 11 league games are at Livestrong Sporting Park – the only road trip the July 16 visit to Houston. When they return, they will not face a road game again until Sept. 17. “During the 10-game stretch that we had on the road, we thought we were playing well but things just weren't going our way, so it's tough, when you don't get results, to keep your head up and to say, ‘Keep going, it's going to be OK.’ For some reason right now things are clicking and we're very confident," said Matt Besler. COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids remained winless at home since April, playing to a scoreless draw with the Houston Dynamo on Sunday evening at at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids have 23 points from 18 games, sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall was credited with seven saves on the night, many of the spectacular variety. Matt Pickens was not called upon to make a save. The closest either team came to scoring was in the 10th minute when Colorado's Jamie Smith headed against the post after an inch-perfect cross from Brian Mullan. Rapids head coach Gary Smith made three changes to the team that lost 4-1 to the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Marvell Wynne came into the back four for Scott Palguta, and Caleb Folan and Omar Cummings were an all-new strike pair in place of Conor Casey and Quincy Amarikwa. COLORADO RAPIDS (4-4-2): Matt Pickens - Kosuke Kimura, Marvell Wynne, Tyrone Marshall, Drew Moor Brian Mullan (Wells Thompson 78), Pablo Mastroeni, Jeff Larentowicz, Jamie Smith - Caleb Folan, Omar Cummings (Quincy Amarikwa 78 [sent off 93+]). TEAM NEWS The Colorado Rapids have not won at Dick’s Sporting Goods park since April 3, their home winless streak extended to six games in the scoreless draw. “For me it was probably the best home display that lacked a goal for a good, good period of time,” said Rapids head coach Gary Smith. “… In the main, I thought the display was pretty dominant. We controlled good periods, there was some nice pressure.” Omar Cummings made his first start since May 4 in the scoreless draw with Houston, but was without his usual running partner in Conor Casey, suspended for the game. Casey has scored in four of his last five appearances.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“Omar’s pace up front, I think against maybe more average center backs, would’ve caused even more problems,” said Gary Smith. “I thought [Jermaine] Taylor and [André] Hainault played very well, and Taylor made two or three probably game-saving challenges back there.” Casey and Cummings have still started only game together – the season-opening victory against Portland. “We have three or four guys capable of scoring 10 goals in a season, as proven in the past, and we have other guys that when there’s that struggle, can carry the load and put some balls in the net,” said defender Drew Moor. “It’s just about quality in the final third, and decisions, and just putting the responsibility on your shoulders every once in a while." Marvell Wynne also made his first start after missing four consecutive matches to a hamstring strain. “Omar and Marvell’s inclusion, you can see at either end of the field makes such a big difference. Marvell’s pace at the back completely demoralizes forwards to chase the ball down,” Gary Smith said.

WHEN LAST THEY MET... Sporting Kansas City tied the Colorado Rapids 1-1 on May 28th, 2011 at Dicks Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. Colorado striker Conor Casey, the Rapids leading goal scorer in 2011, opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Casey capitalized on an errant backpass to put the defending MLS Cup champions ahead 1-0 early. But Sporting Kansas City winger Ryan Smith earned KC a point with his first goal of the 2011 season in the 75th minute on an assist from Teal Bunbury. The draw snapped a five-game losing streak for Sporting Kansas City and started the club’s current unbeaten run in their last eight MLS matches.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY HEADLINES SKC ON STREAK | Sporting Kansas City are unbeaten in their past eight MLS matches (4-0-4), the second longest active streak in MLS. After three consecutive draws -- at Colorado and Toronto, then home to Chicago -- Sporting posted victories in four of their past five MLS matches, with a 4-1 win at FC Dallas, 1-0 triumph at home over San Jose, 2-1 comeback win over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and most recently, a 2-1 triumph at the Portland Timbers on Saturday. The eight-game unbeaten run is the third longest in team history, behind a 12-game streak during the club’s MLS Cup championship season in 2000 and a nine-match streak in 2004 when the team returned to the championship game. HOME SWEET HOME | Sporting Kansas City is unbeaten at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park with a 3-0-1 record in all competition since its opening on June 9th. Wednesay’s match against the Rapids marks the beginning of a stretch that sees Sporting Kansas City play 11 of its next 12 MLS matches at home, and 13 of 14 when including the July 12th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal and July 20th international friendly against Newcastle United FC. The homestretch comes after a record 10-game road trip to open the season, which amounted to the longest stretch of away games in MLS history, topping the Chicago Fire’s nine-game road trip to start the 2006 season. Kansas City is 62-126-55 (.368) all-time away from home, and has the most road wins among all Eastern Confence teams -- and tied for second-most in MLS -- with a 3-64 (0.385) record on the road in 2011. The Eastern Conference is 10-35-36 (.346) in away matches during the 2011 season, for an average of 0.81 points per game. ARNAUD OUT | Sporting Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud will
undergo sports hernia surgery on Wednesday in Los Angeles and is expected to miss up to six weeks while recovering. The veteran midfielder, 31, is in his 10th MLS season and is the longest tenured player on Sporting Kansas City’s roster. Sporting Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo also underwent sports hernia surgery earlier this season. DEFENSIVE DISPLAYS | After going the first nine games of the 2011 season without a shutout and giving up 17 goals in the first seven matches, Sporting Kansas City has four shutouts in their past seven games and have allowed only three goals over the stretch. Sporting Kansas City has not allowed an opponent to score multiple goals since May 14th. ZUSI SHINES | Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi was named MLS Player of the Month for June. Zusi tallied two goals and three game-winning assists last month, and added another assist in Sporting Kansas City’s 3-0 victory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round. Zusi’s three game-winning assist is secondmost in MLS this season.

phia).
Wednesday’s matchup will be the Rapids’ second of three games played in seven days. They played Houston on Sunday, July 3 and take on Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, July 9 at home.
Ivy League According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Andre Akpan (Harvard), Palguta (Cornell), and Jeff Larentowicz (Brown) were the first three teammates all from Ivy League colleges to start an MLS match together (5/4 vs. HOU). The three have combined for five goals in the 2011 season: Akpan (1), Palguta (1), and Larentowicz (3).
Goal Scorers The Rapids’ 19 goals this season have been scored by nine different players; in 2010, nine different Rapids players contributed to the 44 total goals. Six Rapids players have scored their first goal of The Rapids have not beaten Kansas City in two years. The last time the season in their first start of the season: Jeff Larentowicz (3/19 they won was March 28, 2009 at home, a 2-1 victory. This is the vs. POR), Omar Cummings (3/19 vs. POR), Jamie Smith (3/19 vs. second and final meeting between the two teams this season. On POR), Quincy Amarikwa (3/26 at CHV), Andre Akpan (4/30 vs. May 28, the Rapids tied KC 1-1 at home. CHI), and Scott Palguta (4/4 at HOU).
Gary Smith’s first game as Rapids head coach was August 16, 2008 against the Kansas City Wizards. The Rapids won 2-1. Mullan’s Return In the 4-1 loss to Columbus on June 26, midfielder Brian Mullan returned from his 10-game suspension for his tackle on Seattle’s Steve Zakuani. He started and played 68 minutes. On July 3, he played his first home match since the suspension and played the first 78 minutes, adding some spark to the Rapids attack from right midfield.
Season Streaks Until the 4-1 loss to Columbus on June 26, Colorado were unbeaten against Eastern Conference teams in the 2011 season, going 20-6. The defeat also snapped a Rapids record of five straight without a loss, a 2-0-3 record.
The Rapids have not repeated the same starting lineup yet this season. Twenty different players have started at least one match this season; Only four players have appeared in all 16 matches (Moor, Larentowicz, Pickens, and Kimura). All four have started every match, and three have played the full 90 minutes in every match (Kimura played 77 minutes in the June 4 draw with Philadel-
Casey is Colorado’s all-time leading goal scorer (46 goals in 99 games played), and has scored at least two goals against 13 of the 17 MLS teams (he has never scored against D.C. or Portland, he has never played against Vancouver, and has now scored once against the Union).
The Rapids set a team record going unbeaten in nine games (2-07) from April 30 to June 11. The LA Galaxy snapped the streak with Ironman Moor a 3-1 victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on June 18. PreviousDefender Drew Moor has played the full 90 minutes in 59 consecu- ly, the longest unbeaten streak was eight matches from April 25 to tive regular season matches (including games played for FC Dallas June 24, 2009. in 2009), the longest current streak in MLS. The Rapids tied six consecutive matches from May 7 to June 4, According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Moor has the second longwhich is the longest streak in a single MLS season and matched est run ever recorded by an MLS non-goalkeeper. The record of the all-time MLS record (San Jose recorded six ties over the conconsecutive complete games for a field player is 67, by Peter Verclusion of the 2004 season and the start of 2005). mes when he played for Colorado and Kansas City from 19982000. Scoring Machine Conor Casey, who missed the July 3 game due to suspension, Moor scored the game winner in the 1-0 win at Portland on June has scored four goals in five games making him the team’s leading 11, his second goal of the season. He scored his first goal of the goal scorer with four, despite missing six games due to injury. season in the 1-1 draw with D.C. United on May 14. Casey scored a penalty kick goal in the 1-1 tie against Philadelphia Lineup Changes Union on June 4, making him the Rapids’ all-time leading goal In the past five matches, four different players have started at left scorer on penalty kicks with 10 (he was previously tied with John back (Moor, Wynne, Earls, and Palguta). Spencer at nine).
Gary’s Army Gary Smith’s first game as Rapids head coach was August 16, 2008 against Kansas City Wizards, which the Rapids won 2-1. He has an overall record of 32-27-29 and 20-7-17 at home. Under Smith’s leadership, the Rapids have never lost at home when scoring first (20-0-8). They have also never lost more than two home games in a season. Injury Update Marvell Wynne returned to action after a hamstring strain in the 0-0 draw with Houston on July 3. Omar Cummings started the match and played 78 minutes. 300 Club Pablo Mastroeni reached a milestone in his career by playing his 300th career match and his 200th Rapids game on June 18 against LA —only seven other players have played 300 MLS matches and at least 200 with one team.
Forward Woes The forward position has been the most hit by injuries and suspensions this season. No forward has appeared every game. Andre Akpan is the only forward to not miss a game due to injury. Before being injured on May 4, Omar Cummings had played in seven games (starting six) with four different partners up top. The Rapids have also not had all five eligible forwards (Macoumba Kandji excluded while he recovers from ACL surgery) for a single match due to either injury or suspension. Dangerous Duo In the June 18 match against the Galaxy, Omar Cummings assisted Conor Casey’s goal in the 3-1 home loss. It was the first time they had played together since the 2011 season opener versus Portland Timbers on March 19. In the 2010 season, Casey and Cummings scored 27 of the team’s 44 goals, and they both scored in the same game six times. They also had a combined 9 assists, six of which led to the other’s goal.
On May 7, Tyrone Marshall became the 13th player in MLS history to play in 300 regular season matches. Three Rapids players rank in the top four for most all-time games started by active MLS players: #1 Pablo Mastroeni (291), #3 Tyrone Marshall (272), and #4 Brian Mullan (239).
