SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs CHIVAS USA LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. 6:30 p.m. CT (Galavisión; KSMO) July 9, 2011 (WEEK 17; MLS Game 165) Sporting Kansas City look to remain undefeated at their new Livestrong Sporting Park home – and extend their league unbeaten run – when they play host to Chivas USA on Saturday evening. Sporting are undefeated in nine games in MLS play – and 11 in all competitions – after a 1-1 draw with Colorado at midweek. Chivas USA also played on Wednesday, defeating San Jose 2-0 at home to snap a four-game winless slide. REFEREE: Jasen Anno. Sapong adding another in a 3-2 Sporting win at The Home Depot Center on March 19. Chivas USA has come away with points from their last two trips to Kansas City, a 1-1 draw in 2009 and the 2-0 victory last season. Kansas City have won the last two meetings at The Home Depot Center. The road victories a year ago were the first ever in the history of the series. Coaches record: Robin Fraser v COL: P1 W0 L1 D0… Peter Vermes vs. CHV: P4 W2 L2 D0 LAST MEETING (MLS) CHV 2, KC 3 (Sapong 2; Bravo 45, 74 – Conrad 56; Zemanski 84) Rookie C.J. Sapong put Sporting into the lead after just two minutes, winning a cleared corner floated back into the box and pouncing on the loose ball. Omar Bravo then doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, coolly chipping a curling pass over goalkeeper Zach Thornton from the top of the box. Chivas USA pulled a goal back in the 55th minute when Jimmy Conrad potted from close range from a corner kick scramble. But Bravo hit for his second in the 74th minute, racing onto a return 1-2 header from Kei Kamara and coolly slotting home. Ben Zemanski finished the scoreline in the 84th minute when another corner was cleared and then played back into the goalmouth where the second-year midfielder turned it home. CHIVAS USA (4-1-4-1): Zach Thornton - Heath Pearce, Zarek Valentin, Jimmy Conrad, Ante Jazic (Victor Estupinan 86) - Ben Zemanski - Marcos Mondaini (Tristan Bowen 70) - Nick LaBrocca, Francisco Mendoza (Blair Gavin 62), Justin Braun - Alejandro Moreno. SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City extended their league undefeated streak to nine games, coming back for a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday evening at at Livestrong Sporting Park. Sporting have 21 points from 17 matches on the season, moving into fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
LAST MATCH Colorado took the lead in the 32nd minute. Tyrone Marshall’s long free kick from inside the Rapids’ half found Conor Casey outside the top of the penalty area. Casey took the ball down with his chest, let it bounce once and hit a shot on the half-volley past a diving Jimmy Nielsen. Sporting equalized just after the hour. A flowing move from their own end culminated in a low shot from C.J. Sapong that was saved by Rapids 'keeper Matt Pickens. But the rebound fell directly to Graham Zusi and he calmly slid the ball into the back of the net. SKC manager Peter Vermes made two changes to the team that defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 at JeldWen Field. Kei Kamara and Teal Bunbury came into the team in place of Milos Stojcev and C.J. Sapong. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers (Birahim Diop 90), Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Michael Harrington - Roger Espinoza, Julio Cesar - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Omar Bravo - Teal Bunbury (C.J. Sapong 61). TEAM NEWS Sporting’s nine-game unbeaten streak (4-0-5), dating back to May 28, is the second-longest in club history. The then-Wizards reeled off a 12-game streak in their MLS Cup season of 2000. “It would have been great to get the three points,” said defender Matt Besler. “I think we probably deserved it, but in the grand scheme of things we played well, we're still undefeated at home and we still have the unbeaten streak intact, so those are positives.” Sporting also has the second-longest undefeated streak in MLS this season, behind the LA Galaxy’s currently active streak of 12 games. SKC also still has yet to lose in their new Livestrong Sporting Park home, now with two wins and two draws in four starts. “I’m proud of the fact that we were able to get the goal,” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “We were around the two posts and the crossbar. We had a lot of great chances. … At the end of the day, when we are at home, we want to win.” After giving up multiple goals five times in the opening seven games of the season, SKC has not allowed more than a single goal in each of its last 10 contests, recording four shutouts. “That's the goal as a defender. We've done a good job of limiting the amount of chances, and anytime you can do that it's going to give you a good chance to win,” Besler said. Graham Zusi scored his third goal of the season. He has three goals and three assists in his last five appearances (since June12), his entire output thus far for the season. While he did not figure in the scoring, rookie C.J. Sapong nearly turned the match on its head. Returning to the substitutes’ bench after two straight starts, Sapong came on at the hour, and his run through the Rapids defense created the Sporting goal, while he later saw a shot pushed onto the crossbar. “Obviously, (Sapong) was fresh at that point, and they’re a little bit tired,” Vermes said. “I think also his movement (caused problems), and he his raw, physical ability to be able to turn guys. He plays excellent with his back to goal, and then he’s incredible in the air. Guys think they have him and next thing you know, he somehow slips away.” CHIVAS USA Chivas USA put paid to their four-game winless run, getting two second-half goals for a 2-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday evening at The Home Depot Center. Chivas USA have 21 points from 17 games on the season, in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH Chivas USA finally took the lead in the 64th minute, when Justin Braun played the ball forward to Ben Zemanski, who fired a bending strike from 30 yards that swerved out of San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch's reach. The hosts doubled their lead in the 84th minute. Second-half substitute midfielder Francisco Mendoza easily unlocked the Earthquakes defense with a through ball to a wide open Nick LaBrocca in the area, and the attack-minded midfielder coolly finished. Chivas USA head coach Robin Fraser made two changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire at The Home Depot Center. Blair Gavin came into the midfield for Paulo Nagamura, and Victor Estupinan started up top in place of Marcos Mondaini. CHIVAS USA (4-1-3-2): Dan Kennedy - Michael Lahoud, Michael Umana, Heath Pearce, Zarek Valentin Simon Elliott - Blair Gavin (Francisco Mendoza 74), Nick LaBrocca, Jorge Flores (Ben Zemanski 58) - Justin Braun, Victor Estupinan. TEAM NEWS Chivas USA won for the first time in more than a month, since a 1-0 home win against Portland on June 4. Chivas ended the season with seven wins a year ago.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“Win No. 5, in our opinion, has been a long time coming,” said Chivas head coach Robin Fraser. “We’ve played well enough to get results in the past, but this is part of our learning experience because it’s not good enough to play well. You have to play well and play effectively over 90 minutes, and I think that for us, it’s a good milestone, especially coming off the last few games where we’ve scored quite a few goals but have also given up quite a few as well.” That victory was also the last time Chivas USA had kept a clean sheet, allowing eight goals over their last four matches (three losses and a draw). “I think our defenders really answered the challenge and made great decisions tonight and as a result of it, we were able to prevent too many dangerous opportunities and we’re extremely excited about the shutout,” Fraser said. “ … The teams that play well are the ones that don’t get involved in shootouts. You need to be disciplined defensively and find good opportunities, so I feel that tonight was a good building block for us.” Victor Estupiñan was given his first start in league play since the second game of the season, March 26 vs. Colorado. Blair Gavin made his first start since the very same game, after suffering a hamstring injury. “Tonight was a great example of the strength of our team where we’re able to put players on and put players off and have no drop in play and have a play continue, and at times even get better,” Fraser said. “I’m extremely proud of the guys who came off the bench, as well as those who have not been necessarily in the starting group, they’re still highly competitive, work extremely hard, and I think that gives our team credit.” Nick LaBrocca scored his fifth goal of the season, his second in as many games. He has now equaled his career total in goals in 2011; in his first four MLS seasons (three with Colorado, one with Toronto FC), LaBrocca scored five goals. “The effort is on the team, there isn’t just one guy. I feel like our locker room is full of many leaders but collectively everyone steps up and takes part of a leadership role and I feel as if that’s going to carry us on through the season,” LaBrocca said. Francisco Mendoza was also able to return to the field, making his first appearance in five matches. “Due to some circumstances, I haven’t been able to be in the starting lineup like I’ve wanted to, but we have to be at the coach’s disposition and today, I was able to play 20 minutes, of which I think I did well,” Mendoza said. “… Personally, I felt satisfied with how I contributed with the assist.”

Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | July 9, 2011 vs Chivas USA | www.SportingKC.com
SPORTING KANSAS CITY HEADLINES SKC ON STREAK | Sporting KC is unbeaten in their past nine MLS matches (4-0-5), matching the second longest streak in MLS this season and the second longest streak in club history. After three consecutive draws -- at Colorado and Toronto, then home to Chicago -- Sporting has posted victories in four of their past six MLS matches, with a 4-1 win at FC Dallas, 1-0 triumph at home over San Jose, 2-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and most recently, a 2-1 triumph at the Portland Timbers on Saturday. When including Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition, Sporting Kansas City is unbeaten in their last 11 games overall. HOME SWEET HOME | Sporting Kansas City is unbeaten at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park with a 3-0-2 record in all competition since its opening on June 9th. Saturday’s match against Chivas USA is the second in a stretch that sees Sporting Kansas City play 11 of 12 MLS matches at home, and 13 of 14 when including the July 12th Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal and July 20th international friendly against Newcastle United FC. The homestretch comes after a record 10-game road trip to open the season, which amounted to the longest stretch of away games in MLS history, topping the Chicago Fire’s nine-game road trip to start the 2006 season. Kansas City is 62-126-55 (.368) all-time away from home, and has the most road wins among all Eastern Confence teams -- and tied for second-most in MLS -- with a 3-64 (0.385) record on the road in 2011. The Eastern Conference is 11-36-37 (.351) in away matches during the 2011 season, for an average of 0.83 points per game. ARNAUD OUT | Sporting Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud underwent sports hernia surgery on Wednesday in Los Angeles and is expected to miss up to six weeks while recovering. The veteran
midfielder, 31, is in his 10th MLS season and is the longest tenured player on Sporting Kansas City’s roster. Sporting Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo also underwent sports hernia surgery earlier this season. DEFENSIVE DISPLAYS | After going the first nine games of the 2011 season without a shutout and giving up 17 goals in the first seven matches, Sporting Kansas City has four shutouts in their past eight games and have allowed only four goals over the stretch. Sporting Kansas City has not allowed an opponent to score multiple goals since May 14th. ZUSI SHINES | Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi, named MLS Player of the Month for June, has three goals and three assists in his past five appearances, including the game-tying goal in Sporting Kansas City’s 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday. Zusi tallied two goals and three game-winning assists last month, and added another assist in Sporting Kansas City’s 3-0 victory in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup third round. Zusi’s three gamewinning assist is second-most in MLS this season.
NOTEWORTHY MILESTONES -- Sporting Kansas City defender Roger Espinoza made the 75th appearance, including postseason, of his KC and MLS career in the team’s 1-1 draw on Wednesday, fourth most among all current Sporting KC players. -- Espinoza is 59 minutes shy of surpassing 5,000 minutes played, including postseason, in his KC and MLS career. Three current KC players have played more than 5,000 minutes for the club. -- Sporting Kansas City defender Shavar Thomas is 29 minutes shy of surpassing 7,500 regular season minutes played in his Sporting KC career, third most among all current Sporting KC players. -- Sporting KC striker Kei Kamara’s next appearance will be his 50th game played for KC.

CHIVAS USA’S BUSY WEEK CONCLUDES WITH MATCH ON THE ROAD VS. SPORTING KC After a resounding 2-0 home win against the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday, Chivas USA leave the comforts of The Home Depot Center and return to the road. The Red-and-White travel to Kansas City to take on Sporting Kansas City in their new stadium, Livestrong Sporting Park. The match, the second of the week for the Goats, kicks off at 4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, and will be broadcast on Galavision and W Radio 690 AM. For more information on the game, please visit cdchivasusa.com or call 1-877-CHIVAS-1. Fans can track the game on cdchivasusa.com or on the team’s Twitter feed, @cdchivasusa. GOATS TAKE ALL THREE POINTS IN LONG AWAITED WIN AGAINST EARTHQUAKES: Substitute Ben Zemanski opened the scoring with his second career goal on Wednesday night, a rocket from 30 yards, in the 64th minute. Nick LaBrocca added his team-leading fifth goal in the 84th minute to seal the victory for the Red-and-White against the San Jose Earthquakes. The match ended at 2-0 in front of 9,425 at The Home Depot Center. With the result, Chivas USA’s record moves to 5-7-6 (21 pts) and the team moves up to sixth place in the Western Conference. For more information on the game, including highlights and reactions, please visit cdchivasusa.com. MORENO ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY WITH VENEZUELA, HELPS IN DRAW AGAINST BRAZIL: Forward Alejandro Moreno is with the Venezuela National Team and will likely be away on international duty for several weeks. The veteran played a key role in Venezuela’s 0-0 draw with Brazil last Sunday, taking part in the final 25 minutes of the CONMEBOL Copa América opening game. Moreno has featured several times for his national team this year, and has 31 career caps for Venezuela. CHIVAS USA HOST NEW YORK RED BULLS ON SATURDAY JULY 16th: The next home game for Red-and-White is Saturday July 16th against the Eastern Conference leading New York Red Bulls. The match against Thierry Henry, Rafael Márquez, Juan Agudelo and the rest of the New York Red Bulls kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. The match will be broadcast on Prime Ticket and Galavision and through W Radio 690 AM. For tickets and more information on the game, please visit cdchivasusa.com or call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 CHIVAS USA HOSTS “HEART SOCCER CAMP” IN SUPPORT OF DONATE LIFE CALIFORNIA: The camps are a new and unique outreach initiative that will connect the game of soccer to children and youth with special needs. The first event was in collaboration with the non-profit organization World Access for the Blind and hosted a group of fifty visually impaired children, youth and their families. This Saturday, July 9th, Chivas USA will kick off the second of its HEART Soccer Camp series. This weekend’s clinic will be in collaboration with Donate Life California, whose mission is to inspire Californians to save lives by registering to be organ donors. More than fifty children and teens whose parents either had a second chance to live after receiving a transplant or saved lives by becoming organ donors will take part in the day’s event. Camps take place at the Home Depot Center and feature appearances by the ChivaFighter, ChivaGirls, as well as special activities and prizes for both children and families. CHIVAS USA ANNOUNCES UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH PADRES CONTRA EL CANCER: Chivas USA announced last month an in-depth partnership with PADRES Contra El Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latino families with children who suffer from cancer and blood disorders. The mission-driven relationship will support PADRES and include fundraising and awareness campaigns that will engage Chivas USA team members, the team’s own non-profit Fundacion Chivas de Corazon USA, as well as link elements from Chivas USA’s sister-team Club Deportivo Chivas de Guadalajara. Jimmy Conrad and Mariano Trujillo got things started by visiting a group of children
undergoing cancer treatment at Children’s Hostpital of Los Angeles. The players also taped public service announcements aimed at creating awareness about the need for more individuals to join the national bone marrow registry list. Over the course of this summer, Chivas USA will designate part of the proceeds from the ticket sales from a number of home matches to benefit PADRES, all of which will culminate with a unique night scheduled for September. To learn more about this partnership, visit: www.cdchivasusa.com/community/padres. PEARCE PLAYS EVERY MINUTE: Defender Heath Pearce has played every minute so far this season, his first with Chivas USA. He has now started all eighteen games for the Red-and-White, playing a total of 1,620 minutes. Nick LaBrocca is the only other players to have started all eighteen games, but he has been substituted, leaving the 26-year old Pearce as the only Goat to play every possible minute thus far. ‘CHIVAS AT THE PARK’ CONTINUES SATURDAY JULY 9th IN TORRANCE: Chivas USA’s popular ‘Chivas at the Park’ program will continue with a session on Saturday, July 9 at Torrance’s Normandale Recreation Center, 22400 S. Halldale, Torrance 90501. The clinics offer participating boys and girls ages 5-15 the opportunity to learn soccer techniques and practice drills that highlight teamwork in an environment that promotes the importance of fitness for the entire family. For only $5 each participant receives 90 minutes of soccer instruction, a Chivas at the Park t-shirt, and a certificate of completion. For more information, please visit the http://www.cdchivasusa.com/community/youthsoccer, or contact Nadia Gonzalez at ngonzalez@cdchivasusa.com. CHIVAS USA’S POPULAR COACHING SEMINAR COMING UP IN JULY: Join Chivas USA for a two day coaching seminar and receive insight on Chivas USA’s complete development system, from the youth system through the first team! Seminar topics will include principals of play and player development, and an on-field session will work on technical training. Registration is just $125 per coach, and includes a ticket to Chivas USA’s match against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m.. The two-day event will feature on-field instruction, presentations from Head Coach Robin Fraser, Assistant Coach Greg Vanney, strength and conditioning coach Jim Liston as well as U-18 Head Coach Sacha van der Most. For more information and to sign up, visit: http://www.cdchivasusa.com/youthsoccer/coachingseminar YOUTH TEAM TRYOUTS COMING UP IN SIMI VALLEY: Chivas USA will be holding ‘Sangre Nueva’ Youth Team tryouts coming up this summer in Simi Valley on July 23. Chivas USA coaching staff members will be in attendance at the event to assess and evaluate the entire player pool with the goal of finding players for the Chivas USA Youth Teams. For more information, please visit cdchivasusa.com/youthsoccer/tryouts or call Chivas USA at 310-630-4550. UNION ULTRAS, LEGIÓN 1908, AND BLACK ARMY PROVIDES SUPPORT FROM THE STANDS: Chivas USA is cheered on by three supporter groups in The Home Depot Center for Red-and-White home games. The Union Ultras, founded in 2007 as a Chivas USA-specific supporters group, sit behind the South goal in the stadium (right-hand side from the Press Box) for every home match that the Red-and-White play. On the opposite end (left-hand side from the Press Box) is the Legión 1908, which was founded in 2001 as the Los Angeles chapter of the worldwide Chivas de Guadalajara supporters’ organization. The Los Angeles chapter is the third biggest Legión 1908 group, trailing only Mexico City and Guadalajara in size. Chivas USA’s newest supporter’s group, Black Army 1850, stands in section 138 (far right-hand corner from press box) and started during the 2010 season. CHIVAS USA PLAYERS GIVE FANS ‘THE JERSEYS OFF OUR BACKS’ IN 2011: Starting on Opening Day at The Home Depot Center and continuing all season, Chivas USA players are giving eleven lucky soccer fans the ‘Jerseys Off Our Backs’. Continuing a program that has been a fan-favorite since starting in 2008, after the final whistle of each of Chivas USA’s 18 MLS home games at The Home Depot Center, all players on the field – win, lose or draw – will present Chivas USA fans with their game-worn jerseys, as a special souvenir of appreciation.
