C.J. Sapong’s goal three minutes into stoppage time gave Sporting a 1-0 victory on March 10 at RFK Stadium, the season opener for both clubs.  D.C. United haven’t won in Kansas City since a 1-0 victory, July 4, 2007, a span of five visits.  Last year’s Sporting win at RFK Stadium was the first win by a road team in the series since United’s 2007 win at Arrowhead Stadium.  Coaches record: Ben Olsen vs. KC: P3 W0 L3 D0 … Peter Vermes vs. DC: P7 W4 L2 D1 2012 (MLS): 3/10: DC 0, KC 1 (Sapong 93+)  United ‘keeper Bill Hamid had been the story of the first 90 minutes, stopping Sporting at every turn. But in the third minute of stoppage time, second-half substitute C.J. Sapong lost his marker on a corner kick, found space and placed a clinical header inside the near post for the match-winner.  D.C. UNITED (4-4-2): Bill Hamid - Robbie Russell, Brandon McDonald, Dejan Jakovic, Daniel Woolard - Chris Pontius (Danny Cruz 74), Perry Kitchen, Branko Boskovic (Josh Wolff 66), Andy Najar - Dwayne De Rosario, Hamdi Salihi (Maicon Santos 80).  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Aurelien Collin, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Roger Espinoza, Julio Cesar - Kei Kamara, Graham Zusi, Bobby Convey (Peterson Joseph 85) - Teal Bunbury (C.J. Sporting have 40 points from 23 matches, now in a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  Sporting grasped the lead after 20 minutes. Revolution midfielder Clyde Simms trying to nod a bouncing ball back to a teammate, and Alex Bunbury nipped in ahead and streaked into the penalty area, before slotting home past New England goalkeeper Matt Reis.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Sporting head coach Peter Vermes made one change to the team that fell 2-1 to the Columbus Crew at Livestrong Sporting Park. Julio Cesar came into the team in place of Jacob Peterson.  SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Michael Harrington, Lawrence Olum, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic - Paulo Nagamura (Peterson Joseph 86), Julio Cesar (Michael Thomas 74) - Bobby Convey (Soony Saad 7), Graham Zusi, Kei Kamara - Teal Bunbury. TEAM NEWS  Sporting kept a clean sheet for the fourth time in the last six matches, but they’ve taken just eight points from those games (two wins, two draws).  “We’ve really figured out a way to play different areas on the field defensively and I think that part is good. And finally getting chances is a big thing for us,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “We’ve created a ton of chances this year, we maybe haven’t finished them all, but when you’re creating those chances your eventually going to score. At home maybe not as much, but on the road it’s a little bit different.”  The shutout was the 10th of the season for goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, keeping him in a tie for the league lead with Houston’s Tally Hall.  Sporting will now look to put together back-to-back wins, something they haven’t done since May 27-June 16, when they knocked off San Jose and Toronto.  “We’ve got a lot of games still ahead of us and it’s about us just trying to getting better as we go along. And right now, I think we’ve done a really good job of playing on the road, which I think will help come playoff time,” said Vermes. “And more importantly, we’ve got to get some guys back off injuries. That’s a big thing for us right now.  Bobby Convey was forced off after just seven minutes with a hamstring ailment, his third consecutive start after missing two months with a series of injuries.  “It’s not a pull," Vermes said. "It’s more of a tweak and a cramp, so hopefully he’s getting a little better. We’ll see.”  Teal Bunbury started his second consecutive match, his first time with back-to-back starts in more than a month, and scored his fourth goal of the season. “Teal did a great job – opportunistic. His second touch was awesome. The finish was – I always say it’s kind of his patent finish – he loves to go to the left and curl that ball back post,” Vermes said.  On Wednesday, Sporting won the U.S. Open Cup for the second time, defeating Seattle Sounders FC on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes.  A Kei Kamara penalty kick in the 84th minute for SKC was answered by a Zach Scott goal two minutes to level terms and sent the match into extra time. In the penalty shootout, Sporting converted three of their five attempts while Sounders FC missed on their final three, giving the home side the title and denying Seattle’s historic bid to win a fourth consecutive Open Cup championship.  Here’s the Sporting team: Jimmy Nielsen, Chance Myers, Lawrence Olum, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic (Michael Harrington 100), Paulo Nagamura, Graham Zusi, Julio Cesar, Roger Espinoza, Kei Kamara, Teal Bunbury (C.J. Sapong 88). D.C. UNITED D.C. United snapped their two-game losing streak, defeating the Columbus Crew 1-0 on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 36 points from 21 games. LAST MATCH  The game's lone goal came in the 49th minute, after stellar work from rookie Nick DeLeon. After dribbling into the corner, he cut back on Crew defender Josh Williams, spun away and sent a cross into the box. Long Tan backheeled the ball, and Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum batted it away. But the rebound bounced right to Chris Pontius, who deposited it into the goal.  United head coach Ben Olsen made four changes to the team that lost 1-0 to the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Bill Hamid returned between the posts for Joe Willis, Emiliano Dudar came into the back four for Dejan Jakovic, Branko Boskovic came into the midfield for Lewis Neal, and Long Tan came in up top for Hamdi Salihi.  D.C. UNITED (4-3-1-2): Bill Hamid - Chris Korb, Brandon McDonald, Emiliano Dudar, Daniel Woolard (Lewis Neal 63) - Nick DeLeon (Dejan Jakovic 79), Perry Kitchen, Chris Pontius - Branko Boskovic - Dwayne De Rosario, Long Tan (Maicon Santos 67). TEAM NEWS  United now have a seven-game winning streak at RFK Stadium, one game shy of the club record set March 21-May 23, 1998.  United lengthened their home unbeaten streak to eight games, having not lost at RFK Stadium since the opening game of the season (the first meeting with Sporting KC).  After coming off the substitutes’ bench for two consecutive matches, rookie Nick DeLeon made his second consecutive start.

“It's tough. You go from having a three-month season to all of a sudden – with preseason – 10-plus months,” said Chris Pontius. “Consistency is the hardest thing as a rookie, but I think he's found his groove back. I just told him the thing that makes him successful is him going at guys, and you saw that tonight, putting defenders on their heels.” Daniel Woolard was forced off the field after 63 minutes with concussion-like symptoms, and seems likely to miss a start for the first time since the second game of the year. “Right now we’re in a holding pattern with him,” Olsen said. “[We need] to make sure we go through all the steps to ensure his safety. It’s not a perfect science with this stuff. We’ll evaluate Daniel symptomatically, as we do every guy with these head injuries. It’s a bad part of the game and it seems like it’s happening more and more.” Emiliano Dudar made his first start since April 28, playing the entire match in central defense. "He had some errant passing that didn't help us at times, but he also had some passing and calmness that really does help us,” said Olsen. “I thought overall he had a pretty good day." Striker Long Tan made his first start for United since he was acquired from Vancouver Whitecaps FC, after coming off the substitutes’ bench in the game in Columbus. “His work rate is unbelievable. We didn't find him as much as we needed to in behind. I have to look at the film, but I think he made some very good runs. If we find him, he can be very dangerous,” Olsen said. “I was hoping he could have got a goal. He did a great job on the goal to get a little flick on there. He put a good night in for sure.” Branko Boskovic returned to the starting lineup after missing the Columbus, playing the full 90 minutes for the first time since last Oct. 23. United will also have Andy Najar back after his successful sojourn to the London Olympic Games with Honduras. “I’ve been through that,” Olsen said. “Whether you do well or not, it’s intense being a part of the Olympics. Doing well, maybe even is more taxing. He didn’t play the last game and he didn’t have 90-minute games before that so, physically, he should be OK. We’ve just got to get him there mentally.”

Sporting Kansas City News, Notes and headlines RESULTS | Sporting Kansas City currently sits in first place of the Eastern Conference with a record of 12-7-4 (40 points). The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to begin the season. However, Kansas City experienced a slight decrease in their momentum losing three games in a row before earning a draw against Western Conference foe Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The momentum was back in Kansas City’s favor as the team won two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup games against Orlando City SC and Colorado Rapids and added two MLS victories against the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC. Sporting KC then went on the road and earned a tie at CenturyLink Field against Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders. Sporting KC experienced a second short slump in MLS play, suffering a 4-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park followed by a 1-0 loss to rival Chicago Fire at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. However, in between the two MLS matches, Sporting Kansas City hosted the Dayton Dutch Lions in Open Cup competition, in which they earned a 3-0 victory to send them to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semi-finals.

after his preformance against Brazil when he exited the field after a soft red in second half stoppage time. Espinoza scored a goal in the 3-2 loss, becoming one of four MLS players at the Olympics and one of two MLS players to score a goal, along with Bengtson. LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP CHAMPIONS | Sporting Kansas City was crowned the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Champions for the first time since 2004 after beating the Seattle Sounders FC at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park 3-2 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in regulation. Sporting KC took the lead on a Kei Kamara penalty kick in the 84th minute after a hand ball by Zach Scott. The goal marked Kamara’s second goal in U.S. Open Cup competition since joining Kansas City. Just two minutes later, Seattle’s Scott got a bit of redemption when he notched the equalizer of a free kick from Rosales. After two overtime periods the match was still tied and headed to a best-of-five shootout. Sporting KC, shooting first, began with Kamara’s second successful attempt of the night. The Sounders would match it with a make of their own through Brad Evans’ shot to his left.

Sporting Kansas City got back on track in MLS competition in July when they beat Montreal 3-1 at Saputo Stadium followed by 0-0 home draw with the Houston Dynamo. Sporting KC then went on the road earning a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew moving them back up the standings and into sole possession of first place among Eastern Conference rivals before dropping a 2-1 decision against Houston in their first ever match at BBVA Compass Stadium. Sporting Kansas City returned back to LSP to face the New England Revolution in the first of four consecutive home matches in all-competition. The match resulted in a scoreless draw. Sporting KC then fell to Montpellier Herault SC 3-0 in their first of two international friendlies before losing to Eastern Conference foe Columbus 2-1 despite outshooting the Crew 25-12. Sporting Kansas City then went on to draw 1-1 with EPL side Stoke City FC with a late equalizer in second half stoppage time. OLYMPIC DREAM | Roger Espinoza and the Honduras Olympic Team gave tremendous hope to Honduran soccer fans with their performance at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Honduras first tied Morocco 2-2 on July 26 in the Group D opener. Espinoza started and played the full 90 minutes in the first Olympic appearance of his career. Three days later, Honduras upset a Spain side featuring three players from the team that recently won Euro 2012 to increase their chances of securing a spot in the knockout phase. Espinoza earned the game-winning assist to lift Honduras to the 1-0 victory. Fellow Major League Soccer professional Jerry Bengtson, from the New England Revolution, scored all three goals for Honduras in the first two games of the tournament tournament. His game-winner against Spain was scored on Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea following a wellstruck cross from Espinoza. Espinoza missed the group stage finale due to caution accumulation after acquiring a yellow card in each of the team’s first two games. Despite Espinoza’s absence, Honduras managed to earn a draw which was enough to qualify Honduras for the quarterfinals against Brazil. Espinoza earned a standing ovation

Gspurning gave his team the advantage with a stop on Espinoza and Seattle momentarily led following Marc Burch’s blast down the middle. Besler pulled Sporting KC back level with a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net. Alonso and Zusi both sent their shots over the crossbar in back-to-back attempts, and Nielsen made a superb save to his left to deny Christian Tiffert to send it to the fifth and final penalty kick with it all to be decided. Nagamura’s initial attempt was saved by Gspurning, but he was ruled to have come off his line early and the Brazilian calmly converted the ensuing second chance to his left to put Sporting KC ahead in dramatic fashion. Johnson walked to the spot with LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in a frenzy, needing to score to keep Seattle alive. Back in Kansas City for the first time since he played with the then-Wizards in 2007, Johnson’s shot sailed over the crossbar and brought an end to the shootout with Seattle’s third straight miss from the mark.

Prior to the shootout loss, the Sounders have won an unprecedented three straight U.S. Open Cups, and had not lost in the competition since August 12, 2008, when they were still a United Soccer League franchise. Sporting’s journey to the 2012 final began on May 29 with a 3-2 home victory over USL Pro Division side Orlando City in the Round of 32. A week later, Sporting defeated fellow MLS club Colorado Rapids, 2-0, to advance to the cup quarterfinals for the second straight season. A comprehensive 3-0 win over USL Pro’s Dayton Dutch Lions on June 26 booked Sporting’s spot in the semifinals at Philadelphia. Sporting then earned the 2-0 victory on the road at the Philadelphia Union on July 11.

GAME NOTES 2 Games in hand

Hamid stepping up

After a light month of July, the three teams ahead D.C. United in the standings (New York, Houston, and Sporting KC) have played two more games. Despite the unbalanced schedule in the East, United is still within two points of the New York Red Bulls, and within four points of both Sporting KC and the Houston Dynamo.

For the third time (versus Columbus) in his last four complete MLS games, United’s 21-year-old goalkeeper held his opponent scoreless. The shutout against Columbus on 8/4 marked his 5th shutout of the season and lowered his GAA average to an impressive 0.79 (good enough for 2nd in the League for those with over 500 minutes of action).

Pontius ups his goal total

Eleven multi-goal games

United midfielder-forward Chris Pontius scored again on Saturday against the Columbus Crew to bring his goal total to 10 in 18 games played. Pontius has six game-wining goals on the year and is just four goals away from breaking the all-time game-winning goal record, set by Carlos Ruiz in 2002.

Through 21 games this season, D.C. United has 11 multi-goal games. The Black-and-Red has netted four goals twice (against FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls); three goals five different times (against the Houston Dynamo, San Jose Earthquakes, Toronto FC, New England Revolution, and Montreal Impact); and two goals four different times (against the New England Revolution, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls and Colorado Rapids).

Can’t get it done at home Tonight’s matchup will be nearly two months since Sporting has won a League matchup at home. Kansas City hasn’t been able to pull together a League win at home since 6/16. Sporting has dropped contests to Chicago and Columbus, and tied Houston and New England at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

Teammates a week ago Just a short week ago, Andy Najar and Roger Espinoza were Honduran teammates competing in the 2012 Olympic quarterfinals against Brazil. Tonight, they are foes as D.C. United tries to overtake the Red Bulls in the table. The two put on a strong showing in London, as the Hondurans went 1-0-2 in group play before being eliminated by Brazil.

De Rosario leading MLS in assists Dwayne De Rosario is enjoying his role as playmaker and it shows on the stat sheets. With assists against Dallas (2) on 3/30, New England (1) on 4/14, New York (1) on 4/22, Houston (1) on 4/23, San Jose (2) on 5/2, New England (1) on 5/26, and Montreal Impact (1) on 6/3, De Rosario is tied for a League leading 10 assists.

De Rosario two goals away from 100th MLS tally De Rosario scored his 97th and 98th career goals against Toronto FC on May 19th and is now two tallies away from his 100th MLS goal. The Black-and-Red midfielder/forward already has a League-high ten assists on the season and is slowly creeping up the scoring charts now with 5 goals.

DeRo as maestro Dating back to May 2005, over a span of 41 games with 5 different MLS clubs, Dwayne De Rosario’s side has only lost 3 games in which the 2011 MLS MVP recorded an assist. DeRo, who currently leading the League with 10 assists, has led his team’s to a 27-3-11 record when tallying an assist.

Points coming from all over the field D.C. United is leading the MLS with 18 players to record a goal, assist, or both. As a testament to the team’s depth and well roundedness, only one field-player that has stepped on the field this year has yet to tally a point – Emiliano Dudar.

Historically: D.C. United v Kansas City D.C. United has the upper hand historically, edging KC with a record of 18-17-9 over the teams’ 17-year history playing against each other. The two have only met once during the playoffs, where United bested the Wizards 3-2 in the 2004 MLS Cup Finals

Wolff a KC legend Josh Wolff, now a D.C. United player/coach, spent 7 years with the Kansas City Wizards (2003-2010). During that time span, he scored an impressive 43 goals and had 26 assists. Wolff played in 144 games and logged over 11,000 minutes for the team. In 2004, Wolff and the Wizards reached the MLS Cup Final, but ended up losing 3-2 to D.C. United at the Home Depot Center in LA. Wolff scored one of the two KC goals for the team.

D.C. debuts v Kansas City In 2010, two of D.C. United’s academy products and local standouts made their debuts against Kansas City. On 3/27/10, midfielder Andy Najar started for United in a 4-0-road loss to KC. On 5/5/10, goalkeeper Bill Hamid made his debut and secured a 2-1 win at home. Last game v Kansas City On opening night for both teams, the two played a scoreless 90 minutes. Kansas City’s C.J. Sapong broke the deadlock by heading home the game-winner in the 93rd minute off a corner kick.

Impressive history

Turning the page

D.C. United is the most successful professional soccer team in United States history. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998.

Following a fourth straight season without making the postseason, Head Coach Ben Olsen and the technical staff made the difficult decision to part ways with several club veterans. Santino Quaranta (10 seasons in DC), Clyde Simms (7 seasons), Devon McTavish (6 seasons), and Marc Burch (5 seasons) are no longer with the team, which makes Chris Pontius (drafted in 2009) as the longest-tenured player on the team.
