SPORTING KANSAS CITY vs FC DALLAS LIVESTRONG SPORTING PARK, Kansas City, Kan. 7:30 p.m. CT (KSMO; FS-SW+) August 27, 2011 (WEEK 24; MLS Game 240) A meeting of two teams currently firmly in the playoff picture is ahead Saturday when FC Dallas travel to Livestrong Sporting Park to take on Sporting Kansas City. The hosts still have three games remaining on this long homestand, coming off a 1-0 victory against D.C. United last weekend that moved then to second in the Eastern Conference. FC Dallas are coming off a 1-0 home loss to Seattle that dropped them to third in the West, but defeated Toronto FC 1-0 at midweek in a second attempt at a CONCACAF Champions League match. It was Kansas City’s first win at Pizza Hut Park since 2007. FCD has won the last two home meetings by shutout, including a 6-0 victory in 2009. FC Dallas has come away with points on three of their last four trips to Kansas City, with two wins and a draw since 2007. Coaches record: Peter Vermes vs. DAL: P4 W2 L2 D0 … Schellas Hyndman vs. KC: P7 W3 L2 D2 LAST MEETING 6/12: DAL 1, KC 4 (Shea 32 – Zusi 28, 55; Collin 49; Sassano 78) Sporting took the lead after 28 minutes when Graham Zusi fired a low shot from just outside the left corner of the box that beat Kevin Hartman inside the far post. But Brek Shea pulled FCD level just four minutes later, setting off on a powerful dribbling run through four SKC defenders before slotting home from inside the area. Yet Sporting exploded after the break. A long corner from Zusi was volleyed back into the mixer by C.J. Sapong, and Aurelien Collin swooped in to turn it home in the 49th minute. Zusi then made it 3-1 on a remarkable free kick from just short of the center circle, which dipped and dove as it sailed over Hartman's head. SKC were reduced to 10 men when Milos Stojcev was shown a second yellow card, but it was the visitors who completed the scoring when Luke Sassano ran onto a high ball out of midfield and looped it over Hartman as he came rushing off his line. FC DALLAS (4-4-2): Kevin Hartman - Zach Loyd (Jackson Goncalves 46), George John, Ugo Ihemelu, Jair Benitez (Ruben Luna 74) - Eric Alexander (Milton Rodriguez 46), Andrew Jacobson, Daniel Hernandez, Brek Shea - Marvin Chavez, Fabian Castillo. MLS GAME INFORMATION
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City won for the second time in four days, defeating D.C. United 1-0 on Sunday evening at Livestrong Sporting Park. Sporting have 36 points from 25 matches on the season, moving into second place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH The game's lone goal came after 19 minutes. Omar Bravo’s cross was cleared out of the penalty area, but Kei Kamara tracked down the ball and unleashed an unstoppable blast on the half-volley from just outside the box that goalkeeper Joe Willis could only watch. Sporting manager Peter Vermes made one change to the team that rolled to a 3-1 victory against the Portland Timbers at Livestrong Sporting Park. Omar Bravo returned from suspension, in place of Milos Stojcev. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-2-3-1): Jimmy Nielsen - Chance Myers, Julio Cesar, Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic Graham Zusi, Roger Espinoza - Kei Kamara, Omar Bravo (Michael Harrington 89), C.J. Sapong - Teal Bunbury (Birahim Diop 73) TEAM NEWS Kei Kamara scored for the fourth time in the last six games as Sporting moved into second place in the Eastern Conference. “The most important thing today was the three points,” Omar Bravo said. “We got that. We climbed up the table. Hopefully, we can stay up there.” When Sporting KC began their extended home stretch, they were in a tie for seventh place in the East with 17 points, just three points ahead of last place overall. Since, they’ve gone 4-1-4 in nine games (eight at Livestrong Sporting Park), with three more games before they again play on the road. “With nine games left, (winning the Eastern Conference title) is absolutely something that we can shoot for, especially because six out of those nine are at home,” Graham Zusi said. “It’s not out of the question at all.” Sporting have scored 20 of their 36 goals this season in the first half, third-most in MLS, behind New York (22) and Colorado (21). But eight of their last 12 goals have come in the opening 45 minutes. “I think probably the last three or four games we’ve played here at home I think our start has been very, very good,” said SKC manager Peter Vermes. “[I’m] really pleased with the way we are putting teams under pressure offensively. We’re putting teams back on their heels a little bit.” After going seven games without a shutout, Sporting have now kept a clean sheet in two of their last four games. “At the end of the day the guys did a great job and got a clean sheet, and what I am happy about is that teams that win championships in this sport have to be able to get a clean sheet, you have to be able to win games 10,” said Vermes. “And the guys locked the game up really well. The team has done a really good job of learning from their mistakes and they closed the game out really well.” FC DALLAS FC Dallas saw their winless skid reach three games, falling to a 1-0 defeat by Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday evening at Pizza Hut Park. FCD has 43 points from 25 games on the season, now in third place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH Sounders FC gained the lead after just 16 minutes. A ball from Lamar Neagle from the left was deflected into the path of Fredy Montero by an FCD defender, and he led a streaking Mauro Rosales down the right flank, who in turn fired a low shot from 18 yards out to beat goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. FC Dallas then went down a man in the 56th minute when Daniel Cruz saw his second yellow card of the game after referee David Gantar whistled him for diving outside the Seattle penalty area. FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made two changes to the team that came away with a 2-2 tie with Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. Jackson came into the back line for the suspended George John, and Daniel Cruz started in place of Bruno Guarda. FC DALLAS (4-2-3-1): Kevin Hartman - Jackson (Fabian Castillo 73), Ugo Ihemelu, Zach Loyd (Jeremy Hall 24), Jair Benitez - Daniel Hernandez (Bruno Guarda 81), Daniel Cruz (sent off 56) - Marvin Chavez, Ricardo Villar, Brek Shea - Maicon Santos TEAM NEWS The three-game winless streak is the longest of the season for FC Dallas. They were shut out for the first time since July 16. “Our players showed a lot of character to continue to play, continue to go forward and continue to put Seattle and Kasey Keller under pressure. The thing you always have to be concerned about is character and attitude,” said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. “Tonight we put everything we had on the line and came up a little bit short." After coming off the substitutes’ bench for his first two MLS appearances, Daniel Cruz made his first start for FC Dallas. But it lasted just 56 minutes after seeing two yellow cards.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
"I feel very bad because it was the first time I played here for our supporters. We lost the game and it was a decisive moment in the game when I went out, when I got the red card,” Cruz said. “To see how FC Dallas pushed Seattle with only 10 men was nice to see." Hyndman had already been forced into one change early, when Zach Loyd suffered a hamstring injury, hitting a back line already affected by the loss of George John to suspension. “When Zach went out it was really hard to find someone to go into center back,” Hyndman said. “There’s a lot of things that have been talked about George John and a whole bunch of stuff that is going on, but I think you saw our team missing him.” Jeremy Hall, acquired just the day before from Portland, made his FCD debut, coming in at right back as Jackson moved into central defense. “Kind of quick turnaround for me,” said Hall. “I got in here last night and wasn’t really expecting to play, but I got called in, so I had to go in there and do the best I could. … [Hyndman] told me to go play. He’s seen me play before – that’s why they brought me in. They know what I can do, so no excuses.” FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman became the all-time appearance leader in MLS history in the loss to Seattle, playing in his 379th regular season game and surpassing the total of current Houston Dynamo assistant coach Steve Ralston. WHEN LAST THEY MET... Sporting Kansas City were 4-1 winners in the previous meeting this season on June 12, 2011 at Pizza Hut Park. Sporting midfielder Graham Zusi, named MLS Player of the Week on Monday, led the way with two goals and an assist for the road result. Zusi opened the scoring in the 28th minute on an assist from captain Davy Arnaud. FC Dallas responded with a goal from Brek Shea, the club’s leading scorer this season, four minutes later. But Sporting Kansas City grabbed the lead for good on Aurelien Collin’s minutes into the second half. KC then pulled away on a stunning free kick from Zusi that he sailed over FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman’s head from 45+ yards out. Despite the dismissal of Milos Stojcev for a second caution in the 56th minute, Sporting’s Luke Sassano struck again in the 78th. Sassano and Collin each scored their first career MLS goals, while Zusi recorded his first career multi-goal game. Sporting KC goalkeeper Eric Kronberg earned the victory in net, filling in for Jimmy Nielsen, who served a mandatory one-game suspension for a red card received against the Chicago Fire in the team’s previous match. The victory gave Sporting KC the advantage in the all-time series, which now stands at 19-8-8 since both teams first met in the inaugural Major League Soccer season in 1996.

DEPTH TESTED | Sporting Kansas City will be without several starters again on Saturday for their match-up with FC Dallas. Captain Davy Arnaud is in the late stages of recovering from sports hernia surgery, while midfielders Craig Rocastle and Luke Sassano are also both sidelined with knee injuries. Additionally, defender Daneil Cyrus and rookie Konrad Warzycha are both expected to miss the remainder of the 2011 season. SAAD SHINES ON DEBUT | Sporting Kansas City striker Soony Saad made his MLS debut on August 17th, entering in the 63rd minute and scoring nine minutes later for his first professional goal. The memorable first match came on his 19th birthday, making him the youngest player to score in Sporting Kansas City history and the third youngest player to appear in a MLS match for the club, behind Nino da Silva and Yura Movsisyan.
HOME, SWEET HOME | Sporting Kansas City is in the midst of nine straight MLS matches at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, tied for the longest homestand in MLS history. Sporting Kansas City will not play another away game until September 17th, a span of 63 days from their last road match. The homestretch comes after a record 10-game road trip to open the season, which amounted to the longest stretch of away games in MLS history, topping the Fire’s nine-game road trip in 2006. KC is 128-71-41 (.619) all-time at home, and has lost only once at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park since it’s opening on June 9th.
ZUSI’S BREAKOUT YEAR | Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi continued his career-year by being named MLS Player of the Week on Monday, as voted on by the North American Soccer Reporters. Zusi scored twice in the club’s 3-1 win over the Portland Timbers for his second multi-goal game of the season. He now has five goals and four assists in 2011, personal career highs after recording one goal and one assist in his previous two pro seasons.
NOTEWORTHY MILESTONES -- Sporting Kansas City defender Shavar Thomas is 29 minutes shy of surpassing 7,500 regular season minutes played in his Sporting KC career, third most among all current Sporting KC players. -- Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara, who scored the gamewinning goal in the club’s 1-0 win over D.C. United on Sunday, could make the 100th start of his MLS career, including postseason, on Saturday. He will become the fourth current Sporting Kansas City player to surpass the milestone.

FC DALLAS CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP STAGE SCHEDULE FC Dallas 1, Pumas 0 – 8/17/11 FC Dallas 1, Toronto FC 0 – 8/25/11 FC Dallas @ Tauro – 9/14/11 FC Dallas vs. Pumas – 9/21/11 FC Dallas vs. Tauro – 9/28/11 FC Dallas vs. Toronto – 10/18/11 THE LEGEND – KEVIN HARTMAN Storied MLS goalkeeper Kevin Hartman has surpassed two all‐time MLS records in the month of August. Already the owner of MLS’ all‐time minutes played record (33,840), El Gato took over the all‐ time games started record on Aug. 13 when he surpassed Steve Ralston’s record of 372 against Philadelphia. Hartman broke Ralston’s (378) record for games played against Seattle on Aug. 20. Hartman has 17 shutouts for FC Dallas in all competitions this season (31 games).
THE FIRST IN MLS HISTORY FC Dallas’ 1‐0 win over Pumas UNAM on Aug. 17 made MLS history. Dallas is the first MLS side to win a competitive game on Mexican soil. Thanks to an outstanding night by Kevin Hartman, th one goal was all FCD needed. In the 66 minute, their pressure on the Pumas defense paid off with Marvin Chavez netting the game winner. Jair Benitez began the sequence with a low, hard strike that hammered the post and caromed straight to the foot of Chavez. The Honduran National had no trouble sending the ball home for the game’s only score. JULY/AUGUST FC Dallas averaged a game every 3.8 days during the blistering‐hot month of July. Despite the obstacles, injuries, heat and lack of practice – FC Dallas compiled a 5‐1‐2 record in all competitions during the month of July. Through Aug. 25, FCD has played a game every four days. The team is 3‐2‐1 in all competitions in August. CONSISTENT DEFENSE FC Dallas finished the 2010 season with a club record 19 goals allowed in 30 regular season matches – a goals against average (GAA) of 0.93. Through its first 25 matches this season, FC Dallas has a 1.03 GAA. SHOTS FC Dallas leads MLS in shots on goal (362). FCD (260) ranks second, only to Real Salt Lake (234) in fewest shots allowed. The defending Western Conference Champions also rank first in shot differential this season. FC Dallas has taken 102 more shots than it has allowed. RSL ranks second in that category at plus‐86. IF PLAYOFFS STARTED TODAY… FC Dallas would draw Seattle Sounders FC in a home‐and‐away, aggregate goal series. A victory in that series would land FC Dallas in its second Western Conference Final in as many years. WINS With eight games remaining in the 2011 regular season, FC Dallas has already achieved its win total (12) from 2010. U.S. NATIONAL TEAM CALL‐UPS FC Dallas had two players called into U.S. National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad for upcoming matches against Costa Rica (Sept. 2) and Belgium (Sept. 6). Defender Zach Loyd and midfielder Brek Shea have both been named to the squad for all three games since Klinsmann was named head coach of the U.S. National Team. FC Dallas and Red Bull New York are the only two MLS sides to have two players invited into this camp.
STREAKING, DALLAS STLYE FC Dallas fell 4‐1 to Sporting Kansas City on June 12 to end a nine‐ game unbeaten streak. Dallas also holds the record for the longest single‐season unbeaten streak in MLS history (19 games: 05/27/10 ‐ 10/09/2010). Kevin Hartman and the FC Dallas defense currently have the longest shutout streak of the season (531 minutes). BREK SHEA IN RACE FOR BUDWEISER GOLDEN BOOT Brek Shea (10) is tied with Eric Hassli for third in the race for the Budweiser Golden Boot. New York’s Thierry Henry (12) leads the MLS. Shea also leads MLS with five game‐winning goals. Despite playing more games than Donovan (18GP) and Henry (20) – Shea (25GP) spent the first five games of this season, and a sixth match on May 7, at center back. Donovan (4), Hassli (3) and De Rosario (3) have also supplemented their goal totals by scoring goals via penalty kicks. Shea leads the MLS in most goals scored from outside the area, with four. Along with FC Dallas defender Zach Loyd, Shea was called to join the U.S. Men’s National Team for its Aug. 10 friendly against Mexico. Shea tallied the U.S.’ only assist in a 1‐1 draw. PRIDE OF VERDIGRIS, OKLAHOMA FCD defender Zach Loyd earned his first career assist against the Chicago Fire on March 19. Loyd picked up his second assist of the season on Brek Shea’s game‐winning goal against L.A. on May 1. Loyd scored a game‐winner of his own, netting the first goal of his MLS career in a 4‐0 victory over Portland on June 25. He picked up his fourth assist of the year on Aug. 5, a day after being named to the U.S. National Team roster for an Aug. 10 friendly vs. Mexico. KEEPING TOP TALENT – UGO IHEMELU Continuing the team’s trend of resigning key players, FC Dallas signed center back Ugo Ihemelu to a contract extension through 2015, the team announced on June 30. Ihemelu commands an FC Dallas backline that has 12 shutouts on the year, tops in MLS. THE SON OF THE WIND Nicknamed "El hijo del viento" (the son of the wind), FC Dallas forward/midfielder Marvin Chavez (47) has suffered nine fewer fouls than league‐leader Gershon Koffie (56) of the Whitecaps.
