CHICAGO FIRE vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY TOYOTA PARK, Bridgeview, Ill. 3 p.m. CT (TeleFutura; My50 Chi; KSMO)
March 26, 2011 (WEEK 2; MLS Game 15)
Off success to begin the season, the next stop for the Sporting Kansas City road show is Bridgeview and the Chicago Fire. Sporting kicked off their 10-game road trip to start the campaign with a 3-2 victory last weekend at Chivas USA. The Fire opened their season on the road as well, coming away from FC Dallas with a 1-1 draw. REFEREE: Jasen Anno. The Fire have won just one of the previous seven meetings between the clubs, over the past three seasons. But four of those encounters have been draws. The clubs will meet in the first game ever at Livestrong Sporting Park on June 9. Kansas City never defeated Chicago at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, with three draws and a loss in four all-time meetings. Coaches record: Carlos de los Cobos v SJ: P2 W0 L1 D1… Peter Vermes vs. CHI: P3 W1 L1 D1 CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire came away with a result in their first match of 2011, playing to a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas on Saturday evening at Pizza Hut Park. LAST MATCH The visitors took the lead after 17 minutes. A partially cleared freekick fell to Cory Gibbs, but his shot was parried by FCD goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. But Diego Cháves was there to sweep home the rebound. FC Dallas pulled even barely a minute later. Zach Loyd carved out some space on the left and put in a rolling cross that Milton Rodríguez skipped home with a nifty backheel flick. FCD finished the game a man down after center back Brek Shea was sent off after pulling down Fire striker Gaston Puerari when he looked to be clean through. Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos had six players making their Fire debuts in his starting XI. Jalil Anibaba made his professional debut in a rebuilt back three. CHICAGO FIRE (3-4-1-2): Sean Johnson - Jalil Anibaba, Josip Mikulic, Cory Gibbs - Bratislav Ristic (Patrick Nyarko 42), Logan Pause, Michael Videira (Baggio Husidic 62), Gonzalo Segares - Marco Pappa - Gaston Puerari, Diego Chaves (Orr Barouch 75). TEAM NEWS Fire boss de los Cobos started the season opener with a three-man back line, but it changed to a back four midway through the first half as Gonzalo Segares shifted to a left back position with Cory Gibbs partnering Josip Mikulic in central defense. "Sometimes you tie and don't feel very good [about the result], and sometimes you tie and feel like you win," Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos said. "At the end of the game, I am not very happy about the result, but I am happy about the effort of the players." De los Cobos indicated he could make a similar tactical shift for Sporting Kansas City.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
"I need think about what is better for us. Very similar to (how) Dallas played with Rodriguez on top, Avila to the side and Ferreira behind them. Bravo is more a foward who won't drop too much. Kamara is very fast. Sapong is a strong guy. But it's important that players know how to play two different ways. If we play with four we still need to play with order, that's the most important thing," said de los Cobos to Chicago Now. On the right side of the midfield, Bratislav Ristic started but came off before halftime in place of Patrick Nyarko. Nyarko battled ankle injuries in 2010 but still led the Fire with 10 assists. “I had an ankle problem early last season and played through it,’’ Nyarko said to the Sun-Times. “But it got worse at the end of last season. … I had bone spurs and a minor ligament tear. I can deal with it. It’s not 100 percent yet, but it’s getting close.’’ Fire midfielder Logan Pause will become the 61st player in MLS history to reach the 200-game mark in league play with his next appearance. His start in the 1-1 against Dallas was his 199th MLS game. "We were up a man for about 30 minutes, but we need to keep things in perspective,” Pause said. “Coming in here and getting a point is fantastic. It's the first game of the year, with a new group, and the guys showed a level of commitment that I am proud of. So I think we are on the right track." Diego Cháves scored in his Fire debut, partnered up top with fellow Uruguayan Gaston Puerari. “They’re young and more mobile,’’ Nyarko said to the Sun-Times. “Everyone’s been trying to learn each other’s movements. Pretty much half our team from last year is gone. We’ve got a new team that’s real young and hungry.” On Tuesday, the Fire acquired the rights to Colombian defender Yamith Cuesta in a trade with Chivas USA, in exchange for a 2012 supplemental draft selection. Then Thursday, the club announced the signing of New York-born striker Gabriel Ferrari, who was last with FC Wohlen in Switzerland.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY Sporting Kansas City kicked off a new chapter in the club’s history in style, recording a 3-2 victory against Chivas USA on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. LAST MATCH Rookie C.J. Sapong put Sporting into the lead after just two minutes, winning a cleared corner floated back into the box and pouncing on the loose ball. Omar Bravo then doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, coolly chipping a curling pass over goalkeeper Zach Thornton from the top of the box. Chivas USA pulled a goal back in the 55th minute when Jimmy Conrad potted from close range from a corner kick scramble. But Bravo hit for his second in the 74th minute, racing onto a return 1-2 header from Kei Kamara and coolly slotting home. Ben Zemanski finished the scoreline in the 84th minute when another corner was cleared and then played back into the goalmouth where the second-year midfielder turned it home. SKC boss Peter Vermes gave a start to veteran Julio Cesar in central defense, with Luke Sassano slotting in at right back. Rookie C.J. Sapong started up top, flanked by designated player Omar Bravo in his MLS debut. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (4-1-2-3): Jimmy Nielsen - Luke Sassano (Chance Myers 72), Julio Cesar, Matt Besler, Roger Espinoza - Craig Rocastle (Stephane Auvray 20) - Davy Arnaud, Milos Stojcev (Graham Zusi 89) - Kei Kamara, C.J. Sapong, Omar Bravo. TEAM NEWS Kansas City won to open the season for the 10th time, and the club’s 10-4-2 record to start the season is the best in Major League Soccer. K.C. has lost the season-opening game just once in the last 10 seasons. “It’s a great way to start the season,” said Sporting coach Peter Vermes to the Kansas City Star. “There’s a lot of real positives in the game itself, and there’s some things we can work on, but I feel comfortable with way we played.” SKC rookie C.J. Sapong scored in the second minute Saturday, the fastest goal ever scored by a rookie making the start in his MLS debut. Three other players scored two minutes into their rookie debuts (Leandre Griffit, Michael Kraus and Josh Wolff), but all did so as second-half substitutes. "The good thing is … our first round draft pick in C.J. – his debut, he scores and I think he had a monster game. He was dangerous, had the ball a lot, he was just very good for us,” said Vermes. Omar Bravo scored two goals in his MLS debut, one of 14 players to hit the net for multiple goals in their league debut (and one of three on First Kick). “I think the first 25 minutes he struggled… because he was so anxious, being the DP, playing against Chivas USA; I think there were so many things that he wanted to prove and then he calmed down and once he calmed down, that’s when he started playing his game,” Vermes said to the Kansas City Star. “And that’s why he’s here, because of the way he played." Vermes started Craig Rocastle in the holding midfield role, but made a change before the first quarter of the match was played, bringing on Stéphane Auvray. But Auvray will be on international duty for the Chicago match.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (0-0-1, 1 pts.) enter their 14th season of MLS play after posting a 9-12-9 record in 2010. Disappointed with missing out on the playoffs for jus the second time in club history, the Fire have made many changes to the roster for 2011, bringing in the likes of veteran U.S. defender Cory Gibbs, Croatians Josip Mikulic (defender) and Marko Maric (midfielder) as well as the Uruguayan strike tandem of Diego Chaves and Gaston Puerari. In all, the club is returning 14 players to the roster, meaning half the players opening the season are new to the club in 2011. 2010 MLS All-Star selection and Goal of the Year winner midfielder th Marco Pappa returns for his 4 MLS season and looks to build upon his team leading seven goals in 2010. Joining Pappa in the midfielder are 2010 Fire MVP and newly named captain Logan Pause and last season’s assist leader Patrick Nyarko, while 2011 MLS Combine MVP Jalil Anibaba will patrol the backline with offseason acquisitions Gibbs and Mikulic. 2010 YEAR IN REVIEW The Fire ushered in a new era with the hiring of former El Salvador national team boss Carlos de los Cobos ahead of the 2010 campaign. The new manager brought in a new system to the club, while welcoming in Designated Players in Mexican striker Nery Castillo and Swedish winger Freddie Ljungberg. Despite the acquisitions, de los Cobos’ side came up just short of the 2010 MLS playoffs, missing the postseason for just the second time in club history. At season’s end, two legendary players announced their retirement, with the Fire bidding goodbye to U.S. giant Brian McBride and the last remaining “Fire Original”, defender C.J. Brown who spent all 13 seasons of his MLS career in the Windy City, appearing in 371 matches for the club across all competitions. FIRE OPEN SEASON WITH A VALUABLE POINT IN 2011 BRIMSTONE CUP FIRST LEG AT FC DALLAS The Chicago Fire (0-0-1, 1 pts.) return to TOYOTA PARK on Saturday to open their 14th season in Chicago following a 1-1 draw against 2010 MLS Cup th Finalist FC Dallas last Saturday. Newly acquired Uruguayan striker Diego Chaves put the visitors ahead 1-0 in the 17 minute before Colombian forward th pulled things level just a minute later. The Fire looked to have the advantage after Hoops center back Brek Shea was sent off in the 55 minute after pulling down Gaston Puerari. Despite being up a man for 35 minutes, the Fire couldn’t find the winner but took a valuable point at Pizza Hut Park to start the season. Though playing in a 3-5-2 formation throughout most of preseason, head coach Carlos de los Cobos put out a 3-4-3 in Dallas, utilizing Guatemalan international in a more central attacking role in tandem with Chaves and Puerari. Captain Logan Pause was joined by newcomer Michael Videira in the middle of the park while Gonzalo Segares shifted into a left wing role, with Bratislav Ristic serving as his counterpart on the right. De los Cobos stayed with the new-look defensive trio of Cory Gibbs, Josip Mikulic and Jalil Anibaba, who held the line well in front of second-year goalkeeper Sean Johnson. rd
Note: Diego Chaves’ goal was the first scored by a Fire player during his debut since Eric Wynalda’s 73 minute goal on May 5, 2001 in the club’s 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Mutiny at Soldier Field THREE NEW PLAYERS JOIN THE FIRE FOLLOWING SEASON OPENER Three young players officially joined the Fire Wednesday following last Saturday’s season opening draw at FC Dallas. Joining the club via trade Wednesday were striker Dominic Oduro and defender Yamith Cuesta. A product of Accra, Ghana, Oduro comes to the Fire from the Houston Dynamo in exchange for long-time Fire striker Calen Carr, who spent just over five seasons in the Windy City, appearing in 82 matches while tallying nine goals and three assists. Oduro appeared in 44 matches, tallying six goals and four assists from 2009-11 for Houston and has spent time with both FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls since entering the league in 2006. A product of Turbo, Colombia, Cuesta comes to the Fire from Chivas USA in exchange for a 2012 Supplemental Draft pick. The 6-3 defender has appeared in 15 matches for the goals, recording one assist from 2009-10. On trial through most of the club’s preseason preparation, former U.S. youth international striker Gabriel Ferrari put pen to paper Wednesday after playing most recently with FC Wohlen in the Swiss Challenge League. Ferrari was part of the U.S. side which ran to the quarterfinals of the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championships in Canada. LOGAN PAUSE ONE MATCH FROM 200 Newly named captain Logan Pause did what was needed last week to setup a great moment for Saturday’s Opening Day match vs. Sporting KC. The nine-year Fire veteran went 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Dallas, putting him at 199 regular season appearances for the club. If the Hillsborough, NC product takes the field on Saturday, he will become the fifth Fire player to hit the 200 plateau and at age 29, also the youngest. Pause will best the club’s th all-time appearance leader C.J. Brown in that category, with the veteran of 296 regular season matches playing his 200 on June 3, 2006 at the age of 30, 353 days. FIRE PRESEASON NOTES In preparation for the 2011 MLS season, the Chicago Fire broke up the club’s preseason into three phases, the initial of which saw the side spend two weeks at the Bridgeview Soccer & Sports Dome – the first instance in 14 seasons the club has spent an extended amount of time training in Chicagoland. The team then spent 12 days in Ave Maria, FL, training and paying a visit to the club’s Juniors organization based in Naples while fitting in three friendlies. After a brief return to Chicago, the team set off for Phase 3 of preseason, making the club’s debut appearance in the Carolina Challenge CHICAGO FIRE SOCCER CLUB – www.Chicago-Fire.com – 7000 S. When last they met... Kansas City went unbeaten versus Chicago in ‘10, including a 2-0 road win on October 12th at Toyota Park. Both teams entered the Tuesday night match separated by a single point, but it was KC who kept their playoff hopes alive with the win courtesy of goals from captain Davy Arnaud and then-rookie striker Teal Bunbury. Arnaud opened the scoring late in the first half on an assist from Bunbury to give him six goals on the season, and strikes in backto-back matches. Bunbury added the insurance goal in the 80th minute, while goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen posted his tenth shutout of the season with two saves in the match.
Kansas City Connections • Kansas City and Chicago faced off in the 2000 MLS Cup at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. on October 15, 2000. Kansas City earned the club’s only MLS Cup championship with a 1-0 victory over the Fire on a goal in the 11th minute from striker Miklos Molnar. Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes and assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin both played in the match for KC. • Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury played for the Chicago Fire Premier (USL Super-20 League) in 2009. • Fire technical director Frank Klopas played in KC in 1996 and 1997 as an original member of the club. He appeared in 54 games, making 41 starts, and recorded seven goals and 11 assists. • Sporting Kansas City midfielder Milos Stojcev and Chicago Fire midfielder Bratislav Ristic are both Serbia natives. • Sporting Kansas City defender Scott Lorenz grew up in Barrington, Illinois, approximately an hour north of Chicago.
sporting kansas city headlines BRAVO, BRAVO! | Sporting KC striker Omar Bravo was named MLS Player of the Week after scoring two goals, including the game-winner, in his debut against Chivas USA on Saturday. Facing the sister club of his former team, Chivas Guadalajara, Bravo scored in 1st half stoppage time with a chip over goalkeeper Zach Thornton and then netted the team’s third goal in the 74th minute with a first-time. slotted shot on a give-and-go with Kei Kamara. Bravo joined KC as one of the most decorated players in Chivas Guadalajara history as the club’s second all-time leading scorer and is a well-known member of the Mexico National Team. Bravo has scored 16 goals for Mexico in 65 appearances, including two goals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. CAPTAIN ARNAUD | Sporting KC midfielder Davy Arnaud returns as captain in 2011, after appearing in 27 matches last season and tallying six goals and three assists. Arnaud, in his 10th MLS season after attending Division II West Texas A&M, is the longest tenured Sporting Kansas City player, and has 43 goals and 33 assists in his career over 219 appearances. See the milestones section on the next page for more on his prolific career for the club.
KAMARA CALLED TO SIERRA LEONE | Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara will miss Saturday’s match in Chicago while participating with the Sierra Leone National Team for an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger on Sunday, March 27th. Kamara has six career appearances for Sierra Leone. Kamara is coming off a career year, scoring a team-high 10 goals and six assists. Both marks are personal career-highs for Kamara, now entering his sixth year in MLS. He currently leads MLS in assists with tallies on both of Omar Bravo’s goals against Chivas USA last weekend, including the game-winning assist in the 3-2 victory. THOMAS CAPTAINS JAMAICA | Sporting Kansas City veteran defender Shavar Thomas will also miss Saturday’s match at Chicago while he captains the Jamaica National Team for two upcoming friendlies on Friday, March 25th against Venezuela and two days later versus El Salvador. Thomas, in his ninth MLS season, has made more than 30 appearances for Jamaica, ranked No. 48 in the latest FIFA rankings. Thomas was on the bench, but did not play in Sporting Kansas City’s 3-2 victory at Chivas USA last Saturday. BUNBURY’S RETURN? | Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury did not play in the club’s season-opening victory over Chivas USA on Saturday due to a dislocated elbow suffered in a pre-season scrimmage against Houston, but Bunbury was not listed on Tuesday’s injury report. The fourth overall draft pick in the 2010 SuperDraft out of Akron, Bunbury enjoyed a standout rookie season with five goals and two assists in 26 appearances. He also became the youngest player in Kansas City history to record an assist at 20 years, 77 days in Kansas City’s 2-1 loss at D.C. United on May 5. His five goals last season were the most by a KC rookie since Scott Sealy scored nine times in 2005. During the offseason, Bunbury made his international debut for the U.S. Men’s National Team in a friendly against South Africa in November and scored in his second appearance on a penalty kick against Chile at The Home Depot Center in January. SAPONG STEALS SHOW | Sporting Kansas City striker C.J. Sapong scored in the second minute of his first ever professional match on Saturday, powering a shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton just 1 minute, 45 seconds into the season opener. It goes into the MLS record books as the fastest goal ever scored by a rookie who started in their debut, besting the mark set by teammate Michael Harrington who scored in the third minute of his debut in 2007. Sapong was selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft out of James Madison University and played the full 90 minutes last Saturday, attempting four shots.

STOJCEV SIGNING | Sporting Kansas City’s most recent addition is Serbian midfielder Milos Stojcev. The 24-year-old’s signing was announced last week prior to his MLS debut, playing 89 minutes as an attacking midfielder alongside captain Davy Arnaud in Sporting KC’s 3-2 victory over Chivas USA. Stojcev was a product of the Red Star Belgrade youth academy and has played in the Serbia SuperLiga since debuting at age 19 in 2006. He has appeared in the UEFA Cup, including an appearance against Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam while with his previous club, FK Borac Cacak. CESAR AT CENTERBACK | Sporting Kansas City signed former Real Madrid and A.C. Milan central defender Julio Cesar late in the 2011 pre-season. The 32-year-old boasts an impressive resume, that includes tenures at top teams across the world after being signed by Real Valladolid in Spain at age 17. He was then picked up by Real Madrid in 1999 and helped the club advance to the UEFA Champions League final. Cesar went on to feature for A.C. Milan, Real Sociedad, Benfica, Austria Wien, Bolton Wanderers, Tigres UANL, Olympiacos, FC Dinamo Bucuresti, Gaziantepspor and most recently, Maritimo Funchal. ROOKIE CLASS | In addition to Sapong, two other 2011 draft picks are on Sporting Kansas City’s current roster. Defender Konrad Warzycha, the son of Columbus Crew coach Robert Warzycha, was taken in the third round of the SuperDraft and defender Mike Jones was picked up in the Supplemental Draft out of Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. Two other young MLS newcomers were signed in the offseason, as Sporting Kansas City signed defender Kevin Ellis as their second Home Grown Player out of the Sporting KC Juniors academy and also signed defender Scott Lorenz, who spent his first professional season playing with the NSC Minnesota Stars of USSF D2 in 2010.
ROAD TRIP | Sporting Kansas City will open the season with ten straight regular season away matches while the final touches are put on LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, the team’s new state-of-theart, $200 million venue. It is believed to be the longest stretch of away games in MLS history. Kansas City is 60-120-51 all-time away from home, and went 4-8-3 on the road in 2010. More than 300 Sporting Kansas City fans are expected to be in attendance at Toyota Park on Saturday to support Sporting KC. The club’s members took advantage of the team’s new membership program which provided 300 complimentary tickets for fans to travel to the Chicago match.
