Sporting Kansas City Game Notes | July 24, 2012 vs Montpellier | www.SportingKC.com

Sporting Kansas City News, Notes and headlines RESULTS | Sporting Kansas City currently sit in second place of the Eastern Conference with a record of 11-6-4 (37 points). The team had a historic start to 2012, garnering seven straight wins to begin the season. However, Kansas City experienced a slight decrease in their momentum losing three games in a row before earning a draw against Western Conference foe Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The momentum was back in Kansas City’s favor as the team won two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup games against Orlando City SC and Colorado Rapids and added two MLS victories against the San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC. Sporting KC then went on the road and earned a tie at CenturyLink Field against Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders. Sporting KC experienced a second short slump in MLS play, suffering a 4-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park followed by a 1-0 loss to rival Chicago Fire at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. However, in between the two MLS matches, Sporting Kansas City hosted the Dayton Dutch Lions in Open Cup competition, in which they earned a 3-0 victory to send them to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semi-finals. Sporting Kansas City got back on track in MLS competition in July when they beat Montreal 3-1 at Saputo Stadium followed by 0-0 home draw with the Houston Dynamo. Sporting KC then went on the road earning a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew moving them back up the standings and into sole possession of first place among Eastern Conference rivals before dropping a 2-1 decision against Houston in their first ever match at BBVA Compass Stadium. Sporting Kansas City returned back to LSP last Saturday to face the New England Revolution in the first of four consecutive home matches in allcompetition. The match resulted in a scoreless draw. THREE NAMED TO MLS ALL-STAR FIRST XI | Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, defender Aurelien Collin and midfielder Graham Zusi were announced as members of the 2012 MLS All-Star First XI on July 8. The First XI are the 11 MLS players who received the most votes from fans at their positions from the 2012 MLS All-Star ballot. All three individuals were also selected for the 18-man gameday roster which was announced by MLS All-Star and D.C. United coach Ben Olsen on Sunday, July 15. The club’s three representatives, tied for most of any MLS team, willbe available for selection to play against UEFA Champions League winners, Chelsea FC on July 25 at PPL Park. The three representatives will be unavailable for tonight’s friendly.

Olympic Dream | Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza is currently at the Olympic Games in London. One of only four MLS players at the Olympics this summer, Espinoza and his Honduras teammates are competing in Group D along with Morocco, Spain and Japan in the 16-team tournament. LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP |Sporting Kansas City advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Final for the first time since 2004 with a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Union in the semifinal round. Jacob Peterson’s header off a set piece broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, and Graham Zusi’s 60-yard volley into an empty net sealed the victory in stoppage time. Sporting Kansas City will host Seattle Sounders FC in the final on August 8 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The Sounders have won an unprecedented three straight U.S. Open Cups, and have not lost in the competition since August 12, 2008, when they were still a United Soccer League franchise. Sporting’s journey to the 2012 final began on May 29 with a 3-2 home victory over USL Pro Division side Orlando City in the Round of 32. A week later, Sporting defeated fellow MLS club Colorado Rapids, 2-0, to advance to the cup quarterfinals for the second straight season. A comprehensive 3-0 win over USL Pro’s Dayton Dutch Lions on June 26 booked Sporting’s spot in the semifinals at Philadelphia on Wednesday. Seattle reached its fourth consecutive U.S. Open Cup Final with wins over the Atlanta Silverbacks (5-1), Cal FC (5-0), San Jose Earthquakes (1-0) and Chivas USA (4-1). They have now gone 18 matches unbeaten in U.S. Open Cup play. Bienvenue: Montpellier Herault SC | The reigning French Ligue 1 champions, MHSC are led by captain and French national team player Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. The team’s first-place finish – three points ahead of Paris Saint-Germain -- qualifies Montpellier Hérault SC for the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League and the Trophée Des Champions, which will be played on Saturday in New York against Coupe de France winners Lyon. International Attention on LSP | Tonight’s friendly is the latest in a growing list of international events at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park since its opening one year ago. After hosting Newcastle United and CD Guadalajara last season, Sporting KC hosts MHSC and Stoke City FC (August 1) in 2012. Additionally, CONCACAF chose LSP for the 2011 Gold Cup and 2012 Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The U.S. Women’s National Team played here in September, and the U.S. Men will make their second trip to LSP on October 16th for a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
