Whitecaps FC 2 became the seventh MLS owned or operated team to enter the league. Vancouver hired Alan Koch as the team's firstever head coach on Jan. 30, 2015 before embarking on their inaugural season in the USL. WFC2 struggled in their first season, winning just eight of their 28 games on their way to posting a 8146 record (30 pts.) and finishing in 11th place in the Western Conference second to last. Whitecaps FC 2 missed out on a playoff berth by 12 points. The team has enjoyed a noticeable turnaround in their second season in 2016, leading the Western Conference for large streches in the early stages of the season, before finishing sixth in the West and advancing to the postseason for the first time with a 1299 record (45 pts.). Vancouver upset thirdseed Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Switchbacks Stadium in the USL Cup Playoffs Western Conference Quarterfinals before earning a lastgasp 32 victory over OKC Energy FC at home in the Semifinal stage. GAME NOTES CONFERENCE FINAL A spot in the USL Cup Final is on the line for the Swope Park Rangers on Saturday when the side takes on Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 in the Western Conference Final. The season has seen a remarkable turnaround after the side was sitting in 13th place at the halfway point of the season before surging into the postseason with eight wins in their last 12 games, including six in their last seven and four in a row to close out the regular season. Including Playoffs, the Rangers have now won six games in a row, and have gone 1241 at home, posting the most home wins in the USL. Only one expansion team has ever made it to the USL Cup Final when Sacramento Republic FC won USL Cup in 2014. AGAINST ALL ODDS The Swope Park Rangers advanced to the Western Conference Final in the most improbable of circumstances. In their Conference Semifinal against Orange County Blues FC on Sunday, SPR went ahead in the 20th minute through Mark Anthony Gonzalez before Ever Alvarado and Tommy Meyer were each sent off either side of a Max Rauhofer goal in the second half, leaving the two teams in a 11 deadlock heading into extra time, though Orange County had a twoman advantage. Despite their predicament, the Rangers prevailed thanks to Dane Kelly's individual effort in the 105th minute, as SPR became the first team in USL history to win a Playoff game while playing down two men. RANGERS HIT WITH SUSPENSIONS In Sunday's dramatic 21 victory over Orange County Blues FC, Swope Park Rangers defenders Ever Alvarado and Tommy Meyer were each shown straight red cards in the second half. On Monday, the USL handed down suspensions to each player. Alvarado will serve a mandatory one game suspension, while Meyer was issued a sixgame ban: three games for his offtheball incident with Akwafei Ajeakwa, and a further three games for making contact with an assistant referee. Prior to Sunday's game, the Rangers had received two red cards all season, shown to Oumar Ballo after he was shown two yellow cards against Saint Louis FC on May 7, and Ayrton who was sent off after a confrontation on the bench against Arizona United SC on July 9.
DEFENSIVE FRAILTIES NO MORE After starting their inaugural season with defensive struggles, the Swope Park Rangers have found a solid formula toward the end of the campaign. The Rangers did not post a shutout in their first 11 games until a 40 victory over Rio Grande Valley FC on June 8, and posted just four shutouts in their opening 26 games of the season. In their six games since, SPR has doubled their shutout total, posting four further clean sheets conceding two goals in that time, one coming from a penalty kick and the other coming when the side was a man down. The backline of goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas and defenders Tommy Meyer, Amer Didic, Oumar Ballo and Ever Alvarado have started all four of those shutouts as SPR outscored their opposition 162 in the last six games. ZENDEJAS STEADY IN GOAL After signing with the club on June 30, goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas had to wait almost two months to make his debut for the Swope Park Rangers. The 21yearold earned his first minutes in the 21 victory over LA Galaxy II on Aug. 27, and has since made six further starts winning every contest. The Chula Vista, Calif. native has made 18 saves across those seven games, leads the team with four shutouts and has posted a 0.41 goals against average the lowest in the USL among goalkeepers that have played a minimum of 300 minutes. Zendejas has sat out only two of the last nine games for the Rangers, with Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia starting in the 20 loss to RGV on Sept. 3 and Zac Lubin starting against his former employers in the 21 win over Tulsa on Sept. 21.
BALLO AND DIDIC A FORMIDABLE DUO Over the past four months, Swope Park Rangers center backs Oumar Ballo and Amer Didic have formed a standout partnership at the heart of the club's defense. Since the two first started together on June 26 a 2 0 win over Seattle Sounders FC 2 SPR has gone 1202 when they start together at the back. In that time, Ballo has earned USL Team of the Week honors twice, while Didic has been recognized six times more than any other player in the league in 2016. Across those 14 games, the Rangers have conceded just seven goals and have posted KELLY AND GONZALEZ SPLIT SCORING BURDEN seven of the club's eight shutouts this season including four shutouts For much of the 2016 USL season, Swope Park Rangers forwards Mark in the last six games. SPR's goals against average when Ballo and Anthony Gonzalez and Dane Kelly have shared the center forward role. In Didic play together is 0.49, compared to 1.67 when they don't. The Sunday's Western Conference Semifinal victory, Gonzalez started and put Rangers have posted backtoback shutouts three times this season his side ahead before being replaced by Kelly, who in turn scored the (June 26July 2, Sept. 1018, Sept. 2430) with Ballo and Didic starting gamewinner in extra time. Sunday's game marked the fourth time all six games. Gonzalez and Kelly have scored in the same game, with the Rangers winning all four games by a combined score of 102. HOME FORM The Swope Park Rangers' home form in 2016 places the side among HIGHEST REMAINING SEED the leading pack in the USL. The Rangers have gone 1241, picking up At number four, the Swope Park Rangers are the highest remainining 31 points from their 15 home contests in the regular season before also seed in the Western Conference, and have been so since the start of the earning wins in the Western Conference Quarterfinals and Semifinals. Semifinal stage. Sacramento Republic FC (#1), Rio Grande Valley FC (#2) Those 31 points place SPR in second in the Western Conference in and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (#3) were all eliminated in the most points posted at home, trailing Colorado Springs by two. In Quarterfinals, while LA Galaxy (#5), OKC Energy FC (#7) and Orange addition, the Rangers have put up 31 goals in Kansas City meaning the County Blues FC (#8) have also all been eliminated. That leaves just the side only trails New York Red Bulls II in goals at home (34). ACADEMY TIES On March 10, the Swope Park Rangers announced the signings of Ezra Armstrong, Will Little and Steven Tekesky to Academy contracts ahead of the 2016 USL season. All three players joined the Rangers directly from the Sporting KC Academy after spending a large portion of preseason with the team. Armstrong and Little both relocated to Kansas City within the last few years from Tennessee to join the Sporting KC Academy, while Tekesky is from Raymore, Mo. Armstrong comes from a family with pedigree, with his father, Desmond Armstrong, a National Hall of Famer. GAME NOTES CONT. CAPTAIN DUKE On Wednesday, March 23, the Swope Park Rangers' firstever signing Christian Duke was named captain of the club ahead of the season opener. Duke is an Overland Park, Kan. native that came through Sporting KC's Academy before enjoying a fouryear college career at the University of San Diego. He was selected by Sporting KC in the 2013 Supplemental Draft but did not make an appearance, instead spending time on loan at OKC Energy FC before joining the club permanently in 2015. So far this season, Duke has played in all 32 games for SPR, leads the team in minutes (2,750) and scored his first goal in over three years against LA Galaxy II on Aug. 27 before adding his second of the season with the gamewinner against Tulsa on Sept. 10. He also has one assist against OKC on Sept. 18. LOCAL PRESENCE IN THE SQUAD While there are three players on the Swope Park Rangers roster who are directly from the Kansas City area, seven more have connections to the city. Christian Duke (Overland Park, Kan.), Steven Tekesky
(Raymore, Mo.) and Patrick Wilkinson (Overland Park, Kan.) were all raised in the region, while Christian Albelo, Ezra Armstrong, Felipe Hernandez, Jaylin Lindsey, Will Little, Nansel Selbol and Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal all entered the club through the Sporting KC Academy, despite not being natives of the area. In addition, center back Tommy Meyer is from St. Louis, Mo. and returns to his home state after spending eight years away. CONNECTED TO SWOPE PARK The team name, "Swope Park Rangers", is a moniker that stems from the days of the old MLS Reserve League. Sporting Kansas City's reserve side would play games at Swope Soccer Village at Swope Park and fans who followed the side coined the name Swope Park Rangers in reference to the team. The name was never used through official club channels until October 22, 2015, when Sporting Club introduced the Swope Park Rangers as the organization's new USL side. The club will play the majority of its home games at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village.
