USL CUP PLAYOFFS

COMPETITION FORMAT The top eight teams from the Western Conference and Eastern Conference advance to the 2016 USL Cup Playoffs, with four weeks of postseason action set to crown the league’s next champion. The fixedseed format concludes with USL Cup, which is held at the venue of the conference champion with the best regular season record. The Conference Quarterfinals took place from Sept. 30Oct. 2, with Conference Semifinals played from Oct. 79. Conference Champions will be crowned from Oct. 1416 before USL Cup is played out to determine the 2016 USL Champion on Oct. 23 on ESPNU. WESTERN CONFERENCE EASTERN CONFERENCE 1. SPR are also among six MLSowned or operated USL teams to clinch a playoff berth, alongside RGVFC, LA Galaxy II, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, New York Red Bulls II and Orlando City B.

OPPOSITION HISTORY Orange County Blues FC are a charter member of the current United Soccer League format, joining the league along with 14 other clubs as the Los Angeles Blues. The Blues finished third in the National Division and advanced to the postseason in 2011, falling in the Divisional Semifinals to the Harrisburg City Islanders 32. The league switched to a singleconference format in 2012, with the Blues finishing eighth and missing out on a postseason berth. The side rebounded in 2013 with a sixthplace finish, clinching a spot in the playoffs but again falling at the first stage the Quarterfinals with a 21 defeat to the Charleston Battery. Ahead of the 2014 campaign, the Los Angeles Blues rebranded as Orange County Blues FC with the introduction of LA Galaxy II into the USL. The Blues finished second to last in 13th place and missed out on the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. Orange County enjoyed their best regular season in 2015, finishing atop the Western Conference standings with a 1495 (47 pts.) record and advancing to the postseason as the West's number one seed. However, after having a bye through the First Round of the playoffs, the Blues were upset 20 by fifthseeded LA Galaxy II in the Conference Semifinals. The Blues advanced to the USL Cup Playoffs in 2016 on the final day of the regular season, earning a 40 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC where the third goal was the tie breaker to finish eighth with a 12144 (40 pts.) record.

GAME NOTES CONFERENCE SEMIFINAL The Swope Park Rangers are preparing for a Western Conference Semifinal on Sunday afternoon, taking on Orange County Blues FC. The Rangers advanced to this stage by defeating LA Galaxy II 30 on Friday, while the Blues beat top seed Sacramento Republic FC on penalty kicks after a goalless draw at Bonney Field on Saturday. The Rangers are the only expansion team remaining in the USL Cup Playoffs after Rio Grande Valley FC, FC Cincinnati and Orlando City B all fell at the first hurdle last weekend. The Rangers have outscored their opposition 141 in their last five games.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC (#6), OKC Energy FC (#7) and Orange County Rangers have posted backtoback shutouts three times this season Blues FC (#8) still in contention for a spot in USL Cup. Ualefi is the only player to start all 31 games, with Duke starting 30, though the Overland Park, Kan. native leads the team in minutes with 2,630 with Ualefi at 2,601. GAME NOTES CONT. ROOKIE PRODUCTION In Amer Didic and Mark Anthony Gonzalez, the Swope Park Rangers has seen significant contribution from two firstyear players. Didic, 21, who is playing his first professional season after a fouryear college career at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., has played in 29 games for SPR this season, been named to the USL Team of the Week a leaguehigh six times and has played every minute in Sporting KC's three Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League games. Gonzalez, 22, joined the Rangers after four years at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind. and is currently the side's leading scorer with 11 goals including two off the bench in the Western Conference Quarterfinal victory over Galaxy II. He only trails Seattle Sounders FC forward Jordan Morris and New York Red Bulls II forward Brandon Allen in all three professional leagues in the U.S. for goals among rookies. RANGERS IN CCL ACTION WITH SPORTING KC Four members of the Swope Park Rangers have been called up by Sporting KC to represent the club in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. Rookie center back Amer Didic was the first to make his debut for the side and has played every minute in SKC's three CCL games. Midfielder Ualefi has made two appearances, including one start in the most recent game against Vancouver. Winger Tyler Pasher also started in the Vancouver matchup at Children's Mercy Park while forward Kris Tyrpak came off the bench at halftime of that contest. DOS SANTOS TO DEPART On Aug. 17, the Swope Park Rangers announced that the club has mutually agreed to part ways with head coach Marc Dos Santos at the conclusion of the 2016 USL season. Dos Santos, who became the Rangers' firstever head coach in late 2015, will join NASL expansion side the San Francisco Deltas once the SPR season is over. The 39 yearold Montreal native has guided the Rangers to a 14106 regular season record in their inaugural season, advancing to the postseason with a fourthplace finish in the West, while four of his signings Amer Didic, Tyler Pasher, Kris Tyrpak and Ualefi have all represented Sporting KC in the CONCACAF Champions League.

New York Red Bulls II advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals and Seattle Sounders FC 2 were eliminated in the Western Conference First Round in 2015. FC Montreal, Portland Timbers 2, Real Monarchs, Toronto FC II and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 did not qualify for the USL Playoffs in their inaugural season in 2015. SPR, Rio Grande Valley FC and Orlando City B all qualified for the postseason in their first attempt this season, while Bethlehem Steel FC failed to do so. ACADEMY TIES On March 10, the Swope Park Rangers announced the signings of Ezra Armstrong, Will Little and Steven Tekesky to Academy contracts ahead of the 2016 USL season. All three players joined the Rangers directly from the Sporting KC Academy after spending a large portion of preseason with the team. Armstrong and Little both relocated to Kansas City within the last few years from Tennessee to join the Sporting KC Academy, while Tekesky is from Raymore, Mo. Armstrong comes from a family with pedigree, with his father, Desmond Armstrong, a National Hall of Famer. Jaylin Lindsey signed an Academy contract on May 6, making his debut the following day against Saint Louis FC, becoming the first American born in the 2000s to make his professional debut. On Aug. 18, the Rangers added four further Academy players to the roster in Christian Albelo, Felipe Hernandez, Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal and Patrick Wilkinson. GAME NOTES CONT. CAPTAIN DUKE On Wednesday, March 23, the Swope Park Rangers' firstever signing Christian Duke was named captain of the club ahead of the season opener. Duke is an Overland Park, Kan. native that came through Sporting KC's Academy before enjoying a fouryear college career at the University of San Diego. He was selected by Sporting KC in the 2013 Supplemental Draft but did not make an appearance, instead spending time on loan at OKC Energy FC before joining the club permanently in 2015. So far this season, Duke has played in all 31 games for SPR, leads the team in minutes (2,630) and scored his first goal in over three years against LA Galaxy II on Aug. 27 before adding his second of the season with the gamewinner against Tulsa on Sept. 10. He also has one assist against OKC on Sept. 18. LOCAL PRESENCE IN THE SQUAD While there are three players on the Swope Park Rangers roster who are directly from the Kansas City area, seven more have connections to the city. Christian Duke (Overland Park, Kan.), Steven Tekesky

(Raymore, Mo.) and Patrick Wilkinson (Overland Park, Kan.) were all raised in the region, while Christian Albelo, Ezra Armstrong, Felipe Hernandez, Jaylin Lindsey, Will Little, Nansel Selbol and Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal all entered the club through the Sporting KC Academy, despite not being natives of the area. In addition, center back Tommy Meyer is from St. Louis, Mo. and returns to his home state after spending eight years away. CONNECTED TO SWOPE PARK The team name, "Swope Park Rangers", is a moniker that stems from the days of the old MLS Reserve League. Sporting Kansas City's reserve side would play games at Swope Soccer Village at Swope Park and fans who followed the side coined the name Swope Park Rangers in reference to the team. The name was never used through official club channels until October 22, 2015, when Sporting Club introduced the Swope Park Rangers as the organization's new USL side. The club will play the majority of its home games at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village.
