GAME NOTES FAMILIAR FOES & FOND MEMORIES The Swope Park Rangers will face Portland Timbers 2 on Saturday night in the first meeting between the sides since the season opener on March 26. The Rangers claimed a 21 victory in that game behind goals from Kevin Oliveira and a late gamewinner from Daniel Salloi. SPR are 132 on the road this season, while T2 have a split 330 record at home. Saturday's game will see the Rangers play their 10th game of the season, with seven coming on the road, meaning SPR will have played half of their away games while only playing a third of the team's schedule. FIRST PRO GAME IN IDAHO Saturday's game with Portland Timbers 2 at Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho marks the firstever competitive professional soccer game to be held in the state. On July 18, 2015, La Liga's Athletic Bilbao squared off against Liga MX's Club Tijuana in a friendly game in Boise, Idaho, but the game between the Rangers and Timbers 2 will be the first competitive professional game to be held in the Gem State. A former NPSL team, the Idaho Wolves, existed for one year over a decade ago, losing all 15 of their games before folding in 2004. OLIVEIRA BACK ON THE SCORESHEET Kevin Oliveira scored the opening goal in the Swope Park Rangers' 11 draw with Sac Republic last weekend his first strike since the season opener against Portland Timbers 2. Oliveira is now tied for second on the team with two goals alongside Tyler Pasher, one behind Daniel Salloi. Oliveira is the only player on the squad to have registered at least one shot in each game this season, leading the team in shots (21) and tied for the teamlead in shots on goal (7). The 19yearold's strike against Sac Republic was his first from open play and was named one of the USL's goals of the week. GONZALEZ ASSISTS AGAIN Mark Anthony Gonzalez recorded his second assist of the season on Kevin Oliveira's goal against Sac Republic last weekend, which was also his first since claiming the gamewinning assist in the season opener against Portland Timbers 2 on March 26. Gonzalez had been nursing an injury for much of May before returning in the May 21 game against Rio Grande Valley FC and earned his second start of the season against Sac Republic. The 21yearold rookie is now second on the team in assists with two, one behind Daniel Salloi.
one of those sides. T2 have played to just one draw this season, coming in a 11 tie at Arizona United SC on April 30. SALLOI LEADS FROM THE FRONT Swope Park Rangers forward Daniel Salloi leads the team in goals (3) and assists (3), making him one of just 12 players in the USL to have contributed to six or more goals in 2016. The Hungarian is averaging a goal or assist every 66 minutes this season, which is the best average of all players in the USL that have contributed to six or more goals, with LA Galaxy II's Jack McBean (11G, 2A) the closest challenger with a goal or assist every 69 minutes. Salloi, 19, is also the youngest player, only teenager and only MLS Homegrown player to have contributed to six or more goals this season. ONE IRONMAN REMAINS Following last weekend's 11 draw with Sacramento Republic FC, Tommy Meyer is the only player on the Swope Park Rangers' roster that has played every minute in 2016. Heading into that game, Meyer and captain Christian Duke were the only players not to miss a minute of action for SPR, but Duke exited the game in the 81st minute while Meyer went the full 90. Meyer has played all 810 minutes for SPR, while Duke, Jimmy Mulligan, Kevin Oliveira and Ualefi have also started all nine games for the club. YOUNGSTERS ON THE SCORESHEET So far in the 2016 season, 21 players under the age of 20 have scored goals in the USL. Of those 21 players, three play for the Swope Park Rangers the highest number of teenage goalscorers out of all 29 teams in the league. Kevin Oliveira (19) scored the club's firstever goal, while Daniel Salloi (19) leads the team with three strikes and Nansel Selbol (19) has also found the net. LA Galaxy II, New York Red Bulls II, Bethlehem Steel FC, FC Montreal, Portland Timbers 2, Seattle Sounders FC 2 and Toronto FC II are tied for second in the league with two teenage goalscorers each. The youngest goalscorer this season is Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2's 15yearold winger Alphonso Davies .
YOUTHFUL SQUAD The average age of the Swope Park Rangers squad is 22.2, which is the sixth lowest in the 29team league. The roster includes seven teenagers in Jaylin Lindsey (16), Ezra Armstrong (17), Will Little (18), Steven Tekesky (18), Kevin Oliveira (19), Nansel Selbol (19) and Daniel SECOND DRAW FOR THE RANGERS Salloi (19), while the oldest players on the squad are Zac Lubin and Last Saturday's draw with Sac Republic was just the second time the Tommy Meyer, both 26. The leaguewide average age is 24.2, with FC Rangers have split the points this season after also playing to a 11 tie Montreal boasting the youngest team with a mean of 21.4 while the with San Antonio FC on April 9. The Rangers find themselves on the low Colorado Springs Switchbacks are the oldest with an average age of end in the USL in terms of total draws, with only five teams having drawn 26.7. Saturday's opponents Portland Timbers 2 are 10th youngest in the one game or less this season. In addition, 18 teams have drawn more league with an average age of 23.3. The youngest 12 teams are all games than SPR in 2016, though Saturday's opponents Timbers 2 are not either owned or operated by a MLS team.
GAME NOTES CONT. USL EXPANSION SEASON The 2016 campaign is the Swope Park Rangers' USL expansion season. For the eight MLSowned USL teams that entered the league prior to the Rangers, only three qualified for the postseason in their initial campaign. LA Galaxy II made it to the semifinals in 2014 while New York Red Bulls II advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals and Seattle Sounders FC 2 were eliminated in the Western Conference First Round in 2015. FC Montreal, Portland Timbers 2, Real Monarchs, Toronto FC II and Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 did not qualify for the USL Playoffs in their inaugural season in 2015. USL EXPERIENCE Of the 24 players on the Swope Park Rangers' current roster, nine have previously played in the USL. Most notably, Dane Kelly is the USL's all time leading scorer with 43 goals since joining the league in 2011. Christian Duke spent the last two seasons with OKC Energy FC, helping the side to a playoff berth in 2015 with the aid of Jacob VanCompernolle. Tommy Meyer was minutes from claiming the 2015 USL Championship as his LA Galaxy II side fell to the Rochester Rhinos in extra time. Kris Tyrpak spent the 2015 season with the Austin Aztex, scoring nine goals for his hometown club. Jon Kempin (Orlando City SC, OKC Energy FC) spent time on loan at Sporting KC's former affiliates. Johnny Grant (FC Montreal), Zac Lubin (Tulsa Roughnecks FC) and Tyler Pasher (Pittsburgh Riverhounds) also have USL experience. STRAIGHT OUTTA MLS While there is a significant amount of USL knowhow in the squad, two players also boast MLS experience Tommy Meyer and Kris Tyrpak. Meyer was drafted in the first round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the LA Galaxy and went on to make 57 appearances in all competitions for the club, winning MLS Cup in 2012 and 2014. Tyrpak was drafted by Chivas USA in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, tallying one goal against the Colorado Rapids and one assist against FC Dallas before the club folded at the end of that season. Two further players were also signed by MLS teams but did not make an appearance: Oumar Ballo was drafted by the Houston Dynamo in 2015 and Christian Duke spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons with Sporting KC. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR There are nine members of the Swope Park Rangers that were born outside of the U.S. and Canada. Ayrton (Brazil), Oumar Ballo (Mali), Amer Didic (Bosnia & Herzegovina), Tomas Granitto (El Salvador), Dane Kelly (Jamaica), Kevin Oliveira (Cape Verde), Daniel Salloi (Hungary), Nansel Selbol (Nigeria) and Ualefi (Brazil) were all born outside of North America. Each USL team is permitted seven Foreign Players on their roster, and the Rangers occupy six with Oumar Ballo, Amer Didic and Tomas Granitto qualifying as domestic players.
POTENT STRIKEFORCE On Dec. 16, 2015 the Swope Park Rangers announced the signings of Dane Kelly and Kris Tyrpak, who combined for 20 goals in the USL regular season in 2015. Kelly is the USL's alltime leading scorer with 43 goals, 42 with the Charelston Battery, while Kris Tyrpak has scored goals in MLS, NASL, USL and USL PDL. In all competitions last season, Kelly (12) and Tyrpak (11) had 23 goals between them, while they have one goal each so far in 2016. This season, Portland Timbers 2 are led by Neco Brett with three strikes. ACADEMY TIES On March 10, the Swope Park Rangers announced the signings of Ezra Armstrong, Will Little and Steven Tekesky to Academy contracts ahead of the 2016 USL season. All three players joined the Rangers directly from the Sporting KC Academy after spending a large portion of preseason with the team. Armstrong and Little both relocated to Kansas City within the last few years from Tennessee to join the Sporting KC Academy, while Tekesky is from Raymore, Mo. Armstrong comes from a family with pedigree, with his father, Desmond Armstrong, a National Hall of Famer. Most recently, Jaylin Lindsey was signed to an academy contract on May 6, making his debut the following day against Saint Louis FC, becoming the first American born in the 2000s to make his professional debut. FIRST TEAM HELP In late March, the Swope Park Rangers announced that the club had added Sporting Kansas City's Jon Kempin, Jimmy Medranda and Daniel Salloi on loan. All three players contributed immediately in the season opener against Timbers 2, with Kempin and Medranda starting, while Salloi appeared off the bench to notch the gamewinning goal late in the contest. Medranda was recalled to Sporting KC on March 31 and remains with the team, while Jordi Quintilla was loaned to the Rangers ahead of their game against Whitecaps FC 2 on April 27, playing 89 minutes in that matchup before being recalled by Sporting KC a month later. CAPTAIN DUKE On Wednesday, March 23, the Swope Park Rangers' firstever signing Christian Duke was named captain of the club ahead of the season opener. Duke is an Overland Park, Kan. native that came through Sporting KC's Academy before enjoying a fouryear college career at the University of San Diego. He was selected by Sporting KC in the 2013 Supplemental Draft but did not make an appearance, instead spending time on loan at OKC Energy FC before joining the club permanently in 2015. So far this season, Duke has started all nine games for SPR.
GAME NOTES CONT. LOCAL PRESENCE IN THE SQUAD While there are three players on the Swope Park Rangers roster who are directly from the Kansas City area, six more have connections to the city. Christian Duke (Overland Park, Kan.), Jon Kempin (Leawood, Kan.) and Steven Tekesky (Raymore, Mo.) were all raised in the region, while Ezra Armstrong, Jaylin Lindsey, Will Little, Daniel Salloi and Nansel Selbol all entered the club through the Sporting KC Academy, despite not being natives of the area. In addition, center back Tommy Meyer is from St. Louis, Mo. and returns to his home state after spending eight years away.
CONNECTED TO SWOPE PARK The team name, "Swope Park Rangers", is a moniker that stems from the days of the old MLS Reserve League. Sporting Kansas City's reserve side would play games at Swope Soccer Village at Swope Park and fans who followed the side coined the name Swope Park Rangers in reference to the team. The name was never used through official club channels until October 22, 2015, when Sporting Club introduced the Swope Park Rangers as the organization's new USL side. The club will play the majority of its home games at Children's Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village.
