HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.

ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is entering his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.

GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is entering his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

NEWS AND NOTES

POSESSION KINGS The Rangers continued to dominate possession on Sunday as they held 68 percent possession against Phoenix Rising FC. This marks the 10th time in 11 games where the Rangers have won the possession battle. The only exception occurred when Swope Park held possession for 49.9 percent of the match against Tulsa in a game where the Rangers won handily 3-1. The Rangers will look to continue this trend and control the pace of play this week against the Switchbacks.

ZENDEJAS- THE BRICK WALL In 10 starts, Rangers goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas had never given up multiple goals in a match for the Rangers. While this streak came to an end this past Sunday, Zendejas continued to impress with three saves on the day. Also to Zendejas’ credit, one of the goals came off of a controversial penalty kick and both came from former Chelsea star Didier Drogba. The young goalkeeper will try to get the Rangers back on track with their midweek match against Colorado Springs.

SWOPE PARK SCORING SPREE

DIDIC SIGNED

The Swope Park Rangers have scored 5 goals in the last 2 matches - putting 3 past the Tulsa Roughnecks two weeks ago and 2 past Phoenix Rising FC this past weekend. The Rangers will look to continue this trend of high scoring matches against a Switchbacks defense that has only given up one goal in their last 2 matches.

Sporting Kansas City has signed defender Amer Didic to an MLS contract for the 2017 season with options for 2018, 2019 and 2020, the club announced three weeks ago. Per new MLS rules that modified international statuses of Canadian players prior to the 2017 season, Didic will occupy a domestic roster spot on Sporting Kansas City’s roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa. The 22-year-old center back is the third player to sign an MLS contract from the Rangers, following defender Tyler Pasher and goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas who joined Sporting Kansas City in December. Didic made 32 appearances for the Rangers during his first professional season in 2016, receiving USL All-League First Team honors as a Defender of the Year finalist after appearing on USL’s Team of the Week a league-high six times. In addition to leading SPR to a Western Conference championship and an appearance in the USL Cup Final, the 6-foot-4 defender played all 90 minutes in three CONCACAF Champions League matches for Sporting Kansas City.

NEWS AND NOTES

PENALTY KICKS GALORE The ball ended up in the back of the net four times last Sunday against Phoenix Rising FC, three of those times coming off penalty kicks. In the 26th minute Lebo Moloto cut across the near post while racing towards a Tyler Pasher cross and was taken down by J.J. Greer. Referee Katja Koroleva awarded the penalty and Kevin Oliveira broke the deadlock to give the Rangers the lead.

WELCOME BACK KEVIN Kevin Oliveira came back from national team duty with Cape Verde last week to score against Phoenix Rising FC. Oliveira had missed the prior two matches due to being called up to the national team. Once back he immediately provided a scoring touch Rangers fans have come to expect from Oliveira. With his goal Sunday, Oliveira now has 3 goals on the season and 6 in his career in 20 appearances for the club. He will hope to add to his tally against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks this week.

CLIMBING THE STANDINGS The Rangers continue to climb in the western conference standings getting 4 points out of their last two matches. These results have pushed the Rangers into 6th place in the western conference with the second least matches played in the conference. This leaves the Rangers plenty of room to move up the rankings as the season continues.

After losing the lead early in the second half, the Rangers were awarded a second penalty kick in the 62nd minute when Christian Duke was taken down by A.J. Gray. This time Nansel Selbol stepped up to the spot- same result. Selbol buried the ball in the back of the net to once again give the Rangers the lead. The match looked like it was going to finish in the Rangers favor, until Eder Arreola lofted a ball in towards former Sporting Kansas City forward, Omar Bravo. While Bravo appeared to be a step offside on the play, he went down by contact from Amer Didic and Phoenix was awarded a late penalty in the 89th minute. Rangers goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas chose the right way, but Didier Drogba wasn’t to be stopped and equalized with what would be the final goal of the match.
