HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.
ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is in his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.
GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is in his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

NEWS AND NOTES
Doyle’s Day Liam Doyle made his 6th appearance and 6th start for the Rangers against the Colorado Switchbacks. Doyle has become a player Rangers fans can look to for strong defensive performances week in and week out. However, Doyle managed to affect the match in a new way on Wednesday. Doyle tallied his first goal of the season on an immaculate header this past week. Doyle will look to continue his run of excellent defense in Tulsa as well as maybe find the back of the net again.
Second Half Success The Rangers have made it a habit of finding goals in the second half, which continued once again this Wednesday, with both of the Rangers’ goals coming after the halftime whistle. This follows the game last Sunday against Phoenix Rising FC where the Rangers walked into the locker room at half time with no goals scored. They eventually would scoretwo goals in the second half.
Lucky Number Four The Swope Park Rangers played their 2nd game in 4 days this past week. In these 2 matches the Rangers scored 4 goals, which led to a total of 4 points earned. These 4 points were good enough to push the Rangers into 4th place in the Western Conference. Whether this is just a string of coincidences is unknown, but the lucky number 4 seemed to be resonating for the Rangers this past week.
The Comeback Kids The Swope Park Rangers won their game against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks last Wednesday. The Rangers found themselves down 1-0 after a superb run by Kevaughn Frater that left three Swope Park Rangers defenders in his wake, eventually leading to an Eddy Prugh tap in. The Rangers found their equalizer in the 67th minute, after excellent work from Diego Rubio to earn a corner. Kevin Oliveira curled in a wonderful cross which found the head of Liam Doyle. The defender made no mistake crushing his header past the Switchbacks keeper. The night was looking as if it might end with both teams sharing the points, until Oliveira once again lofted in a dangerous cross. With this cross, an acrobatic shot was attempted by Kharlton Belmar, which in result fell right into the path of the Rangers’ captain, Christian Duke. Duke made no mistake with this golden opportunity smashing it into the back of the net. This would be the last goal of the night leading the Rangers to a well-earned 3 points.

NEWS AND NOTES
In-Form Oliveira Kevin Oliveira has been on fire since his return from national team duty with Cape Verde. He scored one goal against Phoenix Rising FC. He got the assist on Liam Doyle’s header which he crushed into the back of the net, as well as lofting the ball into Kharlton Belmar who’s blocked shot eventually led to Duke’s winner. Oliveira will hope to keep this run of fire going against the Tulsa Roughnecks, a team he missed playing against when the teams first met due to international duty.
The Rematch Earlier this month the Rangers and Roughnecks battled out a close game at Swope Soccer Village. With the match looking as if it would end in a draw, Mark Anthony Gonzalez put in two extremely late goals in the 91st and 93rd minute, giving the Rangers the win and three points. The Roughnecks will be looking for revenge against the Rangers in ONEOK field this week.
Captain’s Display Christian Duke has become a pillar of the Swope Park Rangers team. From being the team’s first signing, to its first captain, Duke has always been a major part of the Rangers. The captain stepped up once again against the Switchbacks. After an excellent display of running the midfield leading to the Rangers controlling 73% of the possession, the captain found himself in the perfect spot to score the winner. Duke went down briefly after scoring the winner but immediately came back on, showing his grit as well as leadership. It was the Overland Park, KS Native’s second Goal on the year. with the first coming against Phoenix Rising FC in an early season match up in the desert.
