HEAD COACH Nikola Popovic was named Swope Park Rangers head coach ahead of the 2017 season after serving as an assistant in the club’s inaugural campaign in 2016. Popovic arrived in Kansas City following a stint as an assistant coach with Benfica B in Portugal. A dual citizen of Portugal and Serbia who was born in Belgrade, Popovic began his coaching career in Portugal with CD Olivais e Moscavide in the Segunda Division, initially with an internship in the 2005-06 season where the side won the title and gained promotion to the Segunda Liga, before being hired as an assistant for the following season. After leaving CD Olivais e Moscavide at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season, Popovic headed to FC Vihren Sandanski in the Bulgarian A Football Group as an assistant but returned to Portugal later that same year with Segunda Liga side Varzim SC, where he won the Liga Intercalar. In 2010, the 43-year-old enjoyed a stint as an assistant coach with the Cape Verde National Team, before joining Spanish Segunda Division B side AD Ceuta. Popovic’s next stop was with Al Dahfra in the United Arab Emirates for the 2011-12 season, where he was an assistant to Baltemar Brito – Jose Mourinho’s former assistant coach – winning the Vice President Cup. Popovic earned his first head coaching job the following season, taking charge of Sertanense FC in the Portuguese Second Division. Popovic then joined Qatar’s Aspire Academy in 2014, before returning to Portugal and Benfica B in 2015.
ASSISTANT COACH Paulo Nagamura is entering his first season of coaching with the Swope Park Rangers, having announced his retirement from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2016 MLS season with Sporting Kansas City. Nagamura, 33, enjoyed a 12-year MLS career that saw him win two MLS Cup championships and three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles. He made 269 appearances in MLS, including 240 starts, recording 15 goals and 21 assists. In five seasons with Sporting Kansas City, Nagamura tallied seven goals and eight assists in 119 appearances across all competitions. He played a vital role in some of Sporting Kansas City’s biggest moments in club history, converting penalty kicks in shootouts of the 2012 and 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups as well as the 2013 MLS Cup. A native of Brazil, Nagamura began his youth career with hometown club Sao Paulo FC in 1994 before moving to Arsenal FC of the English Premier League in 2001. He signed for the LA Galaxy in 2005, where he won the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup in his first professional season at the senior level.
GOALKEEPER COACH Gavin McInerney is entering his first season with the Swope Park Rangers, having joined the club from fellow USL side the Rochester Rhinos ahead of the 2017 season. McInerney served as an assistant and goalkeeper coach for the Rhinos in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Last season, McInerney oversaw Rochester’s starting goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who posted the lowest goals against average in the league with 0.55 – earning him the USL Golden Glove award. The 32-year-old was a key member of the Rhinos’ coaching staff as the side claimed the USL Regular-Season Championship and the USL Cup in 2015, setting a league record by conceding just 15 goals in 28 regular-season games and only losing one game all season. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, McInerney moved to the U.S. to play college soccer at the University of Memphis in 2004 before returning to Ireland after the 2005 NCAA season to sign a professional contract with St. Patrick’s Athletic FC of the League of Ireland. A move to fellow top-flight side Bray Wanderers followed in 2008 before returning to the U.S. in 2009.

NEWS AND NOTES
THE REMATCH The stakes will be set high for this rematch as San Antonio FC is still undefeated, and has now recorded eight shutouts in eleven games this season. SAFC improves to 9-0-2 (29 points) atop the Western Conference and is still unbeaten at home. SPR has not beaten SAFC ever on the road, only playing to a 1-1 tie last season at Toytota Field. SAFC matched the USL’s single-season record with a fifth consecutive road victory courtesy of a 53rd-minute goal from 20-year-old Mark O’Ojong and Diego Restrepo’s league-leading fifth consecutive clean sheet. The Rangers controlled 77 percent of the possession, the most by a team in a USL match this season, however SPR saw the team’s nine-game home winning streak come to an end.
DIDIC SIGNED Sporting Kansas City has signed defender Amer Didic to an MLS contract for the 2017 season with options for 2018, 2019 and 2020, the club announced Wednesday. Per new MLS rules that modified international statuses of Canadian players prior to the 2017 season, Didic will occupy a domestic roster spot on Sporting Kansas City’s roster pending receipt of his P-1 Visa. The 22-year-old center back is the third player to sign an MLS contract from the Rangers, following defender Tyler Pasher and goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas who joined Sporting Kansas City in December. Didic made 32 appearances for the Rangers during his first professional season in 2016, receiving USL All-League First Team honors as a Defender of the Year finalist after appearing on USL’s Team of the Week a league-high six times. In addition to leading SPR to a Western Conference championship and an appearance in the USL Cup Final, the 6-foot-4 defender played all 90 minutes in three CONCACAF Champions League matches for Sporting Kansas City.
BALLIN’ BELMAR New SPR forward Kharlton Belmar has recorded four goals so far this season. Belmar scored his first goal for the Rangers on his debut against OKC Energy FC, making his mark in the 42nd minute when he pulled the Rangers level at 1-1. In the second match of the season, Kharlton Belmar was once again on the scoresheet, this time striking the game-winner against his former side Portland Timbers 2. Coming into the third match of the season against Sac Republic in the 59th minute, he made an immediate impact as Gonzalez’s game winning goal came from Belmar’s hard shot that was saved and directed to Gonzalez’s head. Belmar made his way back on to the scoresheet yet again with a clinical finish in the second half of the 2-1 loss to Real Monarchs SLC. The goal put Belmar back into the team-lead for goals this season. The former USL Rookie of the Year capped off a 13-pass scoring sequence with his fourth goal in his fourth start of the season against Vancouver Whitecaps 2 on May 5th. The Rangers signed the 2015 USL Rookie of the Year in December after he spent the last two seasons in the USL with T2. Belmar was drafted 34th overall by the Portland Timbers in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft before signing with the club’s USL side ahead of their inaugural season.
OLIVEIRA GETS THE CALL-UP After spending the last nine months on the sidelines after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee on June 24, 2016, Kevin Oliveira is back and making his mark. Oliveira has been called in to the Cape Verde National Team for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda on June 10 at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde in Praia, Cape Verde. Oliveria has previously represented Cape Verde at the youth level and spent time in camp with the senior team in 2015. This inclusion marks the first time Oliveira has been called up for a competitive match. Oliveira has made six appearances, including four starts, recording two goals and one assist since being back this season. He returned to the field in the 1-0 victory over Sacramento Republic FC on April 15, 2017. On Oliveira’s just second game being back he was named to the USL Team of the Week for Week 5. Oliveira came off the bench in the Rangers’ 4-3 road defeat to Phoenix Rising FC, scoring two goals as SPR almost fought back from a four-goal deficit.

CAPTAIN AMERICA
Tyler Pasher made his first Sporting KC debut in MLS play in Vancouver two weeks ago on May 20th against the Whitecaps. Pasher played in one CCL game last year, also against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Pasher has made six appearances including six starts for the Swope Park Rangers thus far this season. The Canadian signed an MLS contract for Sporting KC in December 2016 after starring for the Swope Park Rangers last season.
Erik Palmer-Brown captained the United States U20 National Team to its first CONCACAF U20 Championship back in March. Now one of the veterans on the squad, EPB and the United States U20 National Team kicked off the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea against Ecuador playing to a thrilling 3-3 draw. Palmer-Brown captained the side and played 90 minutes in central defense as the U.S. twice came from behind, using 17-year-old Josh Sargent’s brace and a 94th-minute equalizer from Luca De La Torre to rescue a precious point in the Group F opener. EPB and the U20s then defeated Senegal 1-0 and played to a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia to win Group F. On Thursday they advanced to the quarterfinals after a Round of 16 victory against New Zealand. Six different players scored in the 6-0 thrashing of the Kiwis. EPB played the full 90 minutes as captain, anchoring a backline that held NZ without a single shot on target.
The 23-year-old joined the Rangers in March 2016 after a successful preseason spell and played a leading role throughout the season. He started 26 of 28 USL appearances with five goals and four assists (including playoffs), tallying three of his assists in the playoffs.
EPB, sometimes playing as a holding midfielder for the United States U-20 team, has appeared in five matches including five starts at center back for the Swope Park Rangers.
PASHER IN MLS
POSESSION MASTERS San Antonio defeated the Rangers 1-0 in Kansas City just 8 days prior to this second meeting. The Rangers controlled 77 percent of the possession , the the most by a team in the USL match this season, however SPR saw the team’s nine-game home winning streak come to an end. Prior to this, the last time the Rangers lost at home was on September 3rd of last year, falling 0-2 to Rio Grande Valley FC. The Rangers will look to snap San Antonio’s home streak, currently 4-0-2.
Palmer-Brown was the youngest Homegrown signing in Sporting Kansas City’s history, and made 10 appearances for the club during 2014-15 before being sent on loan to Portugal’s Porto B last year to add to his experience. All of that is coming to bear in his performances for the Rangers, where he has acted as a metronome, helping set the tempo at the back for the Rangers this season. Palmer-Brown’s efficiency was well marked in his performance in the Rangers’ 1-0 victory against Sacramento Republic FC on April 15. The 20-year-old made 96 passes for the game, completing at a rate of 92.6 percent. If that seems high, know that it’s pretty much the accuracy rate Palmer-Brown has been at all season. Palmer-Brown’s accuracy rate this season of 92.2 percent over 322 total passes, which is currently the best of any player competing professionally in North America.
